This paper analyzes the humorous effects generated through the non-observance of Grice’s Cooperative Principle(CP)in the Chinese crosstalk Learning Manchu.Focusing on violations of the Quantity,Quality,Relation, and Manner maxims,it examines how deliberate pragmatic deviations create comedy. The study also incorporates the unique crosstalk mechanism of“Baofu”(packaging and delivering jokes)and emphasizes the essential role of audience cooperation in humor reception. It argues that humor in crosstalk arises not only from performers’non-cooperation but also from active audience engagement within a shared cultural context. 展开更多

This paper probes into the dialogues in If You Are the One based on the theoretical framework of Grice's Cooperative Principle, with a view to discovering humorous effects and conversational implicature in a certain context. Through the analysis of representative dialogues which obey and violate the maxims respectively, this paper concludes that speakers, by appropriately violating the maxims and unconsciously observing the maxims of the CP, manage to achieve humorous effects and conversational implicature. Meanwhile, this paper aims to help people express themselves appropriately to avoid pragmatic failures and achieve the goal of communication. 展开更多

Mammography is widely performed as a standardized procedure for breast cancer screening;however, women often feel some degree of pain during this procedure. Currently, there are limited options available for alleviating pain related to mammography. A non-medicinal approach to the alleviation of pain involves the effects of laughter on physical and psychological wellbeing. We therefore examined the possibility that humorous stimuli would alleviate the physical burden on women undergoing mammography. We assessed 29 women, 15 women received only conventional mammography (neutral group), while 14 women (humor group) watched a funny video during the same examination. The intensity of pain experienced during mammography was assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) and the VAS results showed a statistically significant difference (P = 0.007) between the two groups, with the humor group experiencing less pain. In an additional experiment, 14 women in the humor group also underwent conventional mammography without exposure to the funny video and pain was assessed by VAS. We found that the pain experienced during conventional mammography without the funny video was significantly greater than the pain experienced during the same mammography but with the funny video (P = 0.047). These findings suggested the possibility of alleviating pain during mammography by humorous stimuli. 展开更多

This paper takes an integrative approach to the communication and comprehension of humor from the perspectives of the humorist’s manipulation and the recipient’s vigilance informed by relevance theory. It is proposed that,in order to communicate humor, the humorist manipulates the recipient’s expectation of relevance in the setup and in the punchline in two different but related ways:misleading and guiding. It is also proposed that,in order to comprehend and appreciate humor, the recipient exercises vigilance against his/her own shallow processing in the setup and exercises vigilance for special cognitive effects in the punchline. On this approach, humorous communication and comprehension is viewed as an interaction between manipulation and epistemic vigilance.Strategies of manipulation and vigilance are described, and some essential issues arising from the relevance-theoretic approach to humor are reconsidered with some implications drawn. This paper contributes to enhancing the explanatory power of relevance theory for the communication and comprehension of humor. 展开更多

It is also a kind of language art that can be created by various reasons. This essay will analyze humor from a knowledge of pragmatics—cooperative principle (CP) and show how the humorous effect achieved ascribed to the breaking the four maxims of the cooperative principle. It also provides a lot of examples to show how to achieve humorous effect by applying Grice’s cooperative principle. The creation of humor and violation of CP have close relationship. Violating CP in the surface may create humor. A better understanding about humor will be achieved under an analysis of CP. As a linguistic phenomenon, humor has its own charm. It’s good medicine, that can improve interpersonal relationships and make others feel comfortable. 展开更多

Recently, there has been an unprecedented high cost of living, widespread frustration, and discontent among Nigerians who attribute their experiences to the high-handed leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu(PBAT),popularly calledÈmi lókàn.To mitigate the arduous experiences and emotional stress caused by PBAT’s impromptu stringent policies and self-imposed exchange rate brouhaha, individuals seek out social media platforms with user-generated humorous memes(HMs).This study, cast in the interpersonal theory of multimodality, multimodality, and uses and gratification theory, investigates how HMs are deployed as resources to evaluate themes that project indices of economic downturn in Nigeria. The data for the study comprises eighteen(18)purposively selected online memes analyzed by deploying theoretical concepts that are symbolic, interactional, analytic, reactional, etc.,to interpret the memes both in isolation and as ensembles.Eleven thematic classes of memes that project and accentuate current harsh economic realities were categorized. The study posits that memes evoke distinct reactions, which positively signal intersubjective engagements on the economic downturn, and do not only serve for humor but also to mitigate shared experiences, propagate public aware-ness,castigate and satirize government’s ineptitude, help users to make important lifestyle changes, and find moments of levity in adversity. 展开更多

This study is the first to investigate how a local government’s humorously framed response strategy on social media to a low-severity crisis influences people ’s trust in the local government and their crisis-related behavioral intentions, specific ally when considering the government’s responsibility for the crisis.Based on the situational crisis communication theory,we examined the mediating role of experienced positive or negative affect on people’ s responses to a local government’s crisis communication strategy.Further,we exploratorily examined the predictive power and moderating role of demographics, sense of humor, disposition to trust, and the respective crisis scenarios.A total of517 people participated in an online experiment in which they were confronted with three randomly presented fictive crisis scenarios where the local government’s crisis responsibility(high versus low) and the framing of their crisis response strategy(in form of humorous versus rational Twitter posts) were systematically varied between subjects.First, the results mostly corroborate earlier findings about the degree of crisis responsibility(that is,when a government’s crisis responsibility is high, people have less trust and behavioral intentions) and about the mediating role of experienced affect.Second,we found that humorously framed strategies negatively influence trust and positive affect(but not behavioral intentions). In contrast to earlier findings, the crisis responsibility × framing interaction was not significant.Altogether, the results advise against using humor in crisis communications on social media, even in lowseverity crisis.Exploratory analyses indicate that further investigations should focus on specific crisis characteristics and potential moderators. 展开更多
