Analysis of Risk Factors for Highway Construction Projects in Egypt

The main aim of this... Egypt construction projects are associated with different levels of risks. The lack of familiarity of project management standards is one of the common risks in the construction industry in Egypt. The main aim of this paper is to identify the most significant risk factors affecting highway construction project in Egypt to decrease the likelihood and impact of those risks. The research method starts with extensive literature review to provide a prime risk factors list which was also augmented to expertise to reach final risk factor list which contains all risks that may be faced during highway construction. Subsequently, a set of 12 risk groups consisting of 73 risks was selected and a questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the likelihood and consequences of the identified risks. Later, a software application was developed using MATLAB to facilitate risk evaluation of highways projects. Results indicated that the risk factors arise from owner side is one of the most common risk factors in the construction industry in Egypt as the owner in the majority of construction project in Egypt is the governmental sector, however, the overall project risk of highway construction projects in Egypt is considered as at a medium level. 展开更多

Assessing the Impact of the Lead/Lag Times on the Project Duration Estimates in Highway Construction

The literature mentions multiple factors that can affect the accuracy of estimating the project duration in highway construction,such as weather,location,and soil conditions.However,there are other factors that have not been explored,yet they can have significant impact on the accuracy of the project time estimate.Recently,TxDOT raised a concern regarding the importance of the proper estimating of the lead/lag times in project schedules.These lead/lag times are often determined based on the engineer’s experience.However,inaccurate estimates of the lead/lag time can result in unrealistic project durations.In order to investigate this claim,the study utilizes four time sensitivity measures(TSM),namely the Criticality Index(CI),Significance Index(SI),Cruciality Index(CRI),and the Schedule Sensitivity Index(SSI)to statistically analyze and draw conclusions regarding the impact of the lead/lag time estimates on the total duration in highway projects.An Excel-based scheduling software was developed with Monte Carlo simulation capabilities to calculate these TSM.The results from this paper show that the variability of some lead/lag times can significantly impact the accuracy of the estimated total project duration.It was concluded that the current practices used for estimating the lead/lag times are insufficient.As such,it is recommended to utilize more robust methods,such as the time sensitivity measures,to accurately estimate the lead/lad times in the projects scheduled. 展开更多

Before the supervision unit supervises the project, it is necessary to establish a sound supervision system and comprehensively carry out the construction site management, so as to avoid construction conflicts. With the continuous progress and development of the society, the highway tunnel project in our country has developed rapidly. Looking back on history, the construction of modern highway tunnels appeared as early as 1927 in the Netherlands guilder tunnel at the bottom of the Hudson River in the United States, with a peak hourly traffic volume of 2,000 vehicles. With the gradual improvement of many tunnel construction technologies, multi-function highway tunnels have been built one after another in various countries. By the end of 2000, there were over 400 ultra-long highway tunnels, which greatly improved the transportation efficiency and played an important role in the efficient use of underground space and the protection of the ecological environment. Therefore, it is very important to actively summarize the experience of highway tunnel construction at home and abroad, analyze the problems of modern highway tunnel construction and explore the development direction of modern highway tunnel. Based on the above, this paper will focus on the application of landslide treatment technology in highway tunnel construction, with a view to promoting the healthy development of Chinas highway industry. 展开更多
