The finite element software was used to simulate the hot rolling finishing process, and the distribution of force, heat and velocity in the deformation zone was analyzed.Based on the high temperature friction and wear tester, the friction process of high speed steel(HSS)roll and strip during hot rolling was simulated. The results show that the process can be divided into three stages based on the observed changes in the friction coefficient throughout the rolling process. In the initial state, owing to the instability of the rolling process, the friction coefficient rapidly attains its maximum value within a brief interval and subsequently declines rapidly.Subsequently, the friction coefficient undergoes a gradual increase due to the formation of finer oxide layer particles during the growth period.Ultimately, the friction coefficient will be maintained at a stable value between 0.34 and 0.37.At this time, the HSS roll matrix mainly contains MC,M_(2)C and M_(6)C carbides.Additionally, the surface oxide layer particles become larger and more densely distributed, which can inhibit the wear of HSS rolls to a certain extent. 展开更多

The influence of rare earth metals and heat treatment on the microstructure and performance of M42 steel has been investigated by means of an optical microscope OM scanning electron microscope SEM energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS transmission electron microscope TEM electron back-scatter diffraction EBSD and X-ray diffraction XRD . The results show that M2 C is the prevailing type of eutectic carbides in M42 steel. After modification with rare earth metals M2 C eutectic carbides change from the ordered lamellar structure into a circular structure.Despite different morphologies the two carbides present the same characteristics of microstructure and growth orientation.Compared with lamellar carbides M2 C carbides with the circular structure are much easier to decompose and spheroidize after heating which remarkably refines the carbide dimensions. The refined carbides improve the supersaturation of alloying elements in martensite and increase the hardness of M42 steel by 1.5 HRC. 展开更多

The morphology, microstructure and decomposition behavior of M2C carbides in high speed steels with different chemical compositions have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the morphology and substructure of M2C carbides are very sensitive to chemical compositions of high speed steels.M2C carbides present the plate-like shape in tungsten-molybdenum steel and present the polycrystal orientation in the eutectic cell.In contrast, they show the fibrous shape in molybdenum-base steel and exhibit the monocrystal orientation.Plate-like and fibrous M2C carbides are both metastable and decompose into M6 C together with MC at high temperatures.MC nucleates inside the plate-like M2C while it is formed at the fibrous M2C/matrix interface during the decomposition process.Such differences are expected to arise from different compositions of plate-like and fibrous M2C carbides. 展开更多

The evolution of euteelie carbide in as CaSl M2 high speed steeL was invesligated with hot compression test and metallographic examination. Initial rodlike or irregular eutectic carbides were broken into smaller particles during hot deformation by thermomechanical disintegration, while diffusion controlled phase transformation was not remarkable. Combining with numerical simulation, the relationship between breakdown ratio of carbide network and deformation parameters was obtained. Strain was the most important driving force to shatter euteclic carbides and disperse products. Furthermore, critical strain values were obtained, beyond which carbide network disappeared, and fractured carbides kept a stable profile and they were deformed with matrix coordinately. A higher temperature or lower strain rate resulted in a lower crilical strain. 展开更多

The effect of rare earths on the morphology and microstructure of eutectic carbides in M2 high speed steel was studied. The results showed that rare earths promoted the forrmation of fishbone-like M6C eutectic carbides, compared to plate-like M2C carbides in ingots without modification. The formation of M6C was expected to be caused by rare earth inclusions which acted effectively as the substratc for nucleation of M6C carbides during solidification. M2C and M6C eutectic carbides exhibited different stability during heating. M2C eutectic carbides were much less stable than M6C carbides, and decomposed at high temperatures, favoring the spheroidization and refmement of carbides inhigh speed steels. 展开更多

The effects of RE and Ti microalloying during electroslag remelting(ESR)process on the microsegregation and morphology of eutectic M2C carbides in M2 high speed steel were investigated. The results show that the addition of 0.2 wt%RE can alleviate the segregation of C,W,Mo,V and Cr,while the morphology of eutectic M2C carbides hardly changes. The microalloying with the addition of 0.5 wt%Ti has the lowest degree of microsegregation due to the improvement of primary dendrites by the effective heterogeneous nucleating agent of(Ti,V)(C,N)particles. The addition of Ti makes the mo rphology of M2C carbides change from rod-like or maze-like shape into a coarse feathery shape, exhibiting anisotropic facet growth characteristics. For the microalloying of 0.2 wt%RE and 0.5 wt%Ti,the segregation of the main metal alloying elements is slightly more severe than that of the addition of only RE or Ti.Under the combined action of RE and Ti,the feathery eutectic M2C becomes thinner and shorter and tends to be isolated or distributed in a discontinuous network. 展开更多

The effect of rare earth(RE) on continuous heating transformation of a high speed steel for rolls was investigated by using differ-ential scanning calorimetry(DSC) with combination of microstructure analysis.Determination of the Ac1 and Ac3,the starting temperature of carbide dissolution and melting upon heating, the enthalpy change for the α→γ transformation and overall carbide dissolution were also es-tablished.It was found that RE could reduce the volume fraction of large eutectic carbides and the chrysanthemum-like eutectic colonies but could not change the phase composition.RE made a little change to Ac1,but the variation in Ac3 and enthalpy for the α→γ followed an in-creasing pattern as the RE addition increased. The start temperatures of carbides dissolution increased with increase of RE addition, which may be associated with the influences of RE on the morphology of carbides, but the overall enthalpy change of carbides dissolution decreases as the RE addition increased. Moreover, the start temperature of melting also increased with increasing RE addition. 展开更多

The influence of Ce on the solidification microstructures of M2 high speed steel was studied. The results show that Ce has the effect of alleviating the segregation of alloying elements such as W and Mo in high speed steel. With the addition of Ce, the amount of eutectic carbides is decreased and the flakes of the carbides are refined. Ce mainly segregates onto the interface between the eutectic carbide and austenite, and a Dart of Ce enters M2C carbide. Ce can also enhance the breaking and spheroidizing of the network eutectic carbides during high temperature heat treatment. 展开更多

Laser rapid heating was used for thermal fatigue experiments. Thermal cracks and microstructure were observed using metalloscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that thermal cracks initiated from the interface between the matrix and eutectic carbides (including M6C and M7C3 type carbides),and propagated along the interface between the two phases. MC type carbides enriched with vanadium could prevent the propagation of thermal cracks. The presence of rare earth elements decreased the quantity of big eutectic carbides, and proportionally increased spherical and rod-shaped MC type carbide content. HSS0 (0.00% RE) had approximately three times the thermal cracking density of HSS3 (0.12 wt.% RE). Rare earth elements were shown to significantly improve the microstructure and thermal cracking resistance of HSS rolls. 展开更多

The present work investigated the solidification microstructure of AISI M2 high speed steel manufactured by different casting technologies, namely iron mould casting and continuous casting. The results revealed that the as-cast structure of the steel was composed of the iron matrix and the M2C eutectic carbide networks, which were greatly refined in the ingot made by continuous casting process, compared with that by the iron mould casting process. M2C eutectic carbides presented variation in their morphologies and growth characteristics in the ingots by both casting methods. In the ingot by iron mould casting, they have a plate-like morphology and grow anisotropically. However, in the ingot made by continuous casting, the carbides evolved into the fiber-like shape that exhibited little characteristics of anisotropic growth. It was noticed that the fiber-like M2C was much easier to decompose and spheroidize after heated, as a result, the carbides refined remarkably, compared with the case of plate-like carbides in the iron mould casting ingot. 展开更多

The microscopic structure change rule in high speed steel (HSS) after an additional cryogenic treatment was studied in this paper. Highly dispersed nano-carbide (η-Fe2 C) separated from tempering martensite was found distributed on twin planes of marten-site and dislocation places. Retained austenite was found sheared into martensite and nano-carbide separated at the same time. In addition, the tempering martensite was fine-grained. The stated changes of HSS evidently improve the lifespan of HSS cutter and fully show the advantages of nano-structure. The cryogenic treatment of HSS also improves the roughness of HSS cutter (decrease Ra number by about 50%) and greatly increases the wear resistance of HSS cutter. Further experiments on the wear characteristic of HSS cutter supported the findings mentioned above. The stated HSS treatment technology would implement nano-structure of traditional tool steel through phase change. It could be a new method to improve the performance of HSS cutter. 展开更多

High speed steel (HSS) rolls can replace traditional rolls such as alloyed cast iron rolls and powder metallurgical (PM) hard alloy rolls. The main reasons for the replacement are that the wear resistance of low-cost alloyed cast iron rolls is poor and the cost of high-quality PM hard alloy rolls is very high. By means of centrifugal casting, HSS rolls having excellent wear resistance have been manufactured. The hardness of the HSS roll is 6.5~67 HRC, the range of variation is smaller than 2 HRC and its impact toughness is 15 J/cm^2. The wear rate of HSS rolls used in the pre-finishing stands of high-speed hot wire-rod rolling mill reaches 2.5×10^(-4)mm per ton steel. Furthermore, the manufacturing cost of HSS rolls is significantly lower than that of PM hard alloy rolls; it is only 30 percent of that of PM hard alloy rolls. 展开更多

The influence of rare earths(RE) on solidification behavior of a high speed steel for roll was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) in combination of microstructure analysis. It was found that the sequence of solidification was L→γ,L→γ+MC,L→γ+M2C,L→γ+M6C,respectively.The start temperature and the latent heat liberated by unit mass of L→γ and L→γ+MC increased with increase of RE addition, indicating that RE could trigger the crystallization of the primary γ and the MC carbide more effectively. The promoting effect of RE on the heterogeneous nucleation was believed to be an important cause of this effect.Grain refinement, discontinuous network of eutectic carbides and disperse and finer MC were observed in the samples with RE addition, moreover,RES could act as the heterogeneous nucleus of the MC.RE addition was favorable for stable M6C at the expense of the metastable M2C. 展开更多

As compared with the as-cast HSS, the spray-formed HSS have fine grain and segregation free microstructures. Carbides distribute uniformly. The morphology and types of the carbides in spray-formed HSS are different from those in as-cast HSS. The effect of ferrovanadium inoculation on the microstructure and properties of high speed steel (HSS) used for rolls was studied. The results showed that the as-cast eutectic carbide network tends to be broken after ferrovanadium inoculation, and the carbides are changed to rod-like or nodular shape. After heat treatment, the carbides in the inoculated HSS are spheroidized and distributed more uniformly in the matrix. The impact toughness of high speed steel with ferrovanadium inoculation is obviously improved. The action mechanism of ferrovanadium inoculation on the microstructure of the alloy is also discussed. 展开更多

High speed steel has been widely used in various fields due to their excellent red hardness and good wear resistance. However, the influence of mischmetal (Ce-La) on the as-cast microstructures and mechanical properties of high speed steel has rarely been reported. Thus, the microstructure and mechanical properties of M2 high speed steel with addition of mischmetal (Ce-La) were investigated. The morphology and distribution of the eutectic carbides of the steel were observed by using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the impact toughness and bending strength were tested. The results show that adding mischmetal has an obvious effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of M2 high speed steel. The coarse eutectic structure is refined, the weak connection of the carbide networks is broken and the flake carbides become short and fine. More networks of eutectic carbides dissolve into the matrix. When a suitable adding content of mischmetal is selected, for example, 0.3 mass%, the impact strength and bending strength can increase by 27% and 10.76% compared with that without misehmetal, respectively. 展开更多

The critical points and time-temperature-transformation(TTT)curves of the isothermal transformation diagrams for a high-speed steel casting on a horizontal centrifugal casting machine had been determined experimentally in the study. The effects of quenching temperature on the microstructures and properties of centrifugal casting high speed steel(HSS)roll has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), light optical microscopy(LOM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)as well as using tensile, impact, and hardness tests. The results show that the HSS roll has excellent hardenability and its matrix structure can be transformed into the martensite after being quenched in the sodium silicate solution. The retained austenite in the quenching structure increases and the hardness decreases when the quenching temperature exceeds 1,040℃.The tensile strength and impact toughness of HSS roll increase once the quenching temperature is raised from 980℃to 1,040℃. The steel was quenched at 1150℃ and tempered at 520℃. The phase structures of the steel were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the hardness of specimens was measured. The volume fraction of carbides was counted by Image-Pro Plus software. The typical microstructures were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Stable and meta-stable carbides were deduced by removing the existing phases one by one in the Fe-C equilibrium calculation. It is found that the precipitated carbides are bulk-like MC, long stripe-like M2C, fishbone-like M6C, and daisy-like M7C3 during the tempering process. The stable carbides are MC and M6C, but the meta-stable ones are M2C, M7C3, and M3C. 展开更多
