Objectives:This study aimed to evaluate the measurement properties and methodological quality of instruments developed to evaluate the quality of online health information. Methods:In this study,a systematic search was conducted across a range of databases, including the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang,China Science and Technology Journal(VIP),SinoMed,PubMed,Web of Science,CINAHL,Embase, the Cochrane Library,PsycINFO,and Scopus. The search period spanned from the inception of the databases to October 2023.Two researchers independently conducted the literature screening and data extraction. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Consensus-based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments(COSMIN)Risk of Bias checklist. The measurement properties were evaluated using the coSMIN criteria. The modified Grading,Recommendations,Assessment,Development, and Evaluation(GRADE)system was used to determine the quality grade. Results:A total of 18 studies were included, and the measurement properties of 17 scales were assessed.Fifteen scales had content validity, three had structural validity, six had internal consistency, two had test-retest reliability, nine had interater reliability, one had measurement error, six instruments had criterion validity, and three scales had hypotheses testing for construct validity;however, the evaluation of their methodological quality and measurement properties revealed deficiencies.Of these 17 scales,15 were assigned a Level B recommendation, and two received a Level C recommendation. Conclusions:The Health Information Website Evaluation Tool(HIWET)can be temporarily used to evaluate the quality of health information on websites. The Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool(PEMAT)can temporarily assess the quality of video-based health information. However, the effectiveness of both tools needs to be further verified. 展开更多

Purpose: Disseminating medical and health information is a mission of a public medical library. This paper describes a practice of a medical library in providing online access to health information for the general public.Design/methodology/approach: A four-step workflow is developed to integrate and disseminate heterogeneous health information from medical associations. First, a raw data repository is developed to manage the original submissions from information providers.Second, each document in the raw data repository is represented in a standardized XML schema. Third, the medical terms are identified and manually annotated, enriching the semantics of health information. Lastly, all the semantically enriched XML documents are converted to HTMLs for online dissemination.Findings: A health information website, CHealth, was developed for Chinese speakers. It provides free online access for all without any login or IP constrains. CHealth is available at www.chealth.org.cn.Research limitations: The current workflow is time-consuming and labor-intensive due to the lack of information submission/exchange standard and commonly agreed-on consumer health terminology in Chinese.Originality/value: In this work, the target audience of the medical library has been extended from traditional academic/professional to the general public. Methodologies in library sciences have been combined with those in consumer health informatics in CHealth development. 展开更多

Purpose: Given the ubiquitous presence of the internet in our lives, many individuals turn to the web for medical information. A challenge here is that many laypersons(as "consumers") do not use professional terms found in the medical nomenclature when describing their conditions and searching the internet. The Consumer Health Vocabulary(CHV) ontology, initially developed in 2007, aimed to bridge this gap, although updates have been limited over the last decade. The purpose of this research is to implement a means of automatically creating a hierarchical consumer health vocabulary. This overall purpose is improving consumers' ability to search for medical conditions and symptoms with an enhanced CHV and improving the search capabilities of our searching and indexing tool HIVE(Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering).Design/methodology/approach: The research design uses ontological fusion, an approach for automatically extracting and integrating the Medical Subject Headings(Me SH) ontology into CHV, and further convert CHV from a flat mapping to a hierarchical ontology. The additional relationships and parent terms from Me SH allow us to uncover relationships between existing terms in the CHV ontology as well. The research design also included improving the search capabilities of HIVE identifying alternate relationships and consolidating them to a single entry.Findings: The key findings are an improved CHV with a hierarchical structure that enables consumers to search through the ontology and uncover more relationships.Research limitations: There are some cases where the improved search results in HIVE return terms that are related but not completely synonymous. We present an example and discuss the implications of this result. Practical implications: This research makes available an updated and richer CHV ontology using the HIVE tool. Consumers may use this tool to search consumer terminology for medical conditions and symptoms. The HIVE tool will return results about the medical term linked with the consumer term as well as the hierarchy of other medical terms connected to the term.Originality/value: This is a first attempt in over a decade to improve and enhance the CHV ontology with current terminology and the first research effort to convert CHV's original flat ontology structure to a hierarchical structure. This research also enhances the HIVE infrastructure and provides consumers with a simple, efficient mechanism for searching the CHV ontology and providing meaningful data to consumers. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Swedish version of The Krantz Health Opinion Survey (KHOS). A convenience sample of 79 persons (47 men and 32 women) was recruited from The Heart and Lung Patients’ National Association at ten local meeting places in different areas in Sweden. The questionnaire was examined for face and content validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The findings showed that the Swedish version of KHOS is acceptable in terms of face and content validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability over time among 79 individuals >65 years of age and with a cardiac disease. In conclusion, wider evaluations of the psychometric use of KHOS for other populations and settings are recommended. 展开更多

This shift is driven by the new information technology and a ‘social revolution’. Easy access to health information, thanks largely to the Internet, and active health consumer organizations have provided consumers with enabling independent health information. Individual consumers are also more willing to enter into a dialogue, participate and influence decisions concerning their own care. At the same time the consumer role becomes more diverse. Populations in many countries today are culturally, socially, and demographically diverse. Understanding consumer diversity is one of the greatest challenges facing health care providers. There is a risk that the quality of health care provided to consumers can vary depending on the skills of the professionals to tune into the values and preferences of the individual consumer. Health care providers need to listen to and incorporate consumers’ experiences into their health service offerings in new and creative ways. They need to engage in a dialogue with various consumer groups using multiple channels. There is a need for a new business logic, which would structurally help the providers, on an individual basis to deal with more sophisticated health care consumers. This is a review paper and provides a framework and a set of strategies for dealing with health consumer diversity. We draw on three interrelated theories – open systems theory, service management research and the concept of consumer segmentation to understand health care consumers’ attitudes and behaviour, and their expectations. 展开更多
