Pythagorean-hodograph(PH) curves offer computational advantages in Computer Aided Geometric Design, Computer Aided Design, Computer Graphics, Computer Numerical Control machining and similar applications. In this paper, three methods are utilized to construct the identifications of planar regular sextic PH curves. The first exhibits purely the control polygon legs' constraints in the complex form. Such reconstruction of a PH sextic can be elaborated by C1 Hermite data and another one condition. The second uses polar representation in two cases. One of them can produce a family of convex sextic PH curves related with a quintic PH curve, and the other one may naturally degenerate a sextic PH curve to a quintic PH curve. In the third identification, we use some odd PH curves to construct a family of sextic PH curves with convexity-preserving property. 展开更多

Realistic flows have a stream surface, namely, a two-dimensional manifold, on which the velocity vector of the flow lies on its tangent space. By introducing a stream function and a potential function, we establish the hodo- graph method for potential flows on a surface using the tensor analysis. For the derived hodograph equation, we obtain a characteristic equation and its characteristic roots, from which we can classify the type of the second-order hodograph equation. Based on the results, we discuss the construction of spiral PH quartic curves between two given points and formulate the transition curve of a G2 contact between two circles with one circle inside another circle. In particular, we deduce an attainable range of the distance between the centers of the two circles and summarize the algorithm for implementation. Compared with the construction of a PH quintic curve, the complexity of the solution of the equation for obtaining the transition curves is reduced. 展开更多

Hodographs of the Gravitational Two-Body System and Discrepancies between Newtonian Laws of Equivalent Kepler Orbits and General Relativity

We show first that an orbit, which is naturally characterized by its eccentricity and semi-latus rectum, can equally be characterized by other sets of parameters, and proceed to determine mass-independent characterizations. The latter is employed to obtain the laws of equivalent orbits, which by definition have the same eccentricity and orbit’s parameter [1]. These laws relate the values of the same physical observables on two equivalent orbits to the corresponding total mass;they include the laws of velocity, angular velocity, radial velocity, areal velocity, acceleration, period, energy and angular momentum. Regardless of the share of the two bodies of a fixed total mass, the same relative orbit occurs for the same initial conditions. Moreover, the same orbit can be traced by different total masses but with different relative velocities. The concept of a gravitational field generated by a set of masses is shown to be meaningful only when the center of mass is not changed by the test mass. The associated concept of the “nothing”, which is an infinitesimal mass that allows for the property just mentioned to be fulfilled, is introduced and its orbits are determined. The perturbation of the nothing orbits due to its replacement by a finite mass is determined. It is proved that such a replacement can have a qualitative effect resulting in a “phase transition” of an orbit from unbound to bound, and that the nothing’s circular orbits cannot be occupied by any material body. The Galileo law of free fall, on which the equivalence principle hinges and which is exact only for “nothing-like” falling objects, is revised to determine the duration of free fall of a body of an arbitrary mass. The wholeness of Newton’s laws and the associated concept of force as an interaction are highlighted, and some contradictions between the Newtonian laws of equivalent Kepler’s orbits and the general relativistic predictions are discussed. It is demonstrated that Newton’s law of gravitation is not an approximation of Einstein field Equations even in the case of a static weak field. However, both theories have a common limit corresponding to the case in which the alien concept of a field can be incorporated in the Newtonian theory. We also show that the relative velocity’s hodograph [2-4], the alternative Laplace-Runge-Lenz (LRL) vector derived by Hamilton [4-6], as well as an infinite set of LRL vectors, result all from one vector. The hodograph is a proper circular arc for hyperbolic motion, a circle less a point for parabolic motion, and a full circle for bound motion. 展开更多

Global Optimization Method to Comprise Rotation-Minimizing Euler-Rodrigues Frames of Pythagorean-Hodograph Curve

The rotation-minimizing frame is the main research object for a spatial curve. Although the mathematical description is not complicated, it is not easy to directly make an exact minimizing-rotation frame for the Euler-Rodrigues frame. The condition for the non-normalized Euler-Rodrigues frame of the Pythagorean-Hodograph curve to become the rotation-minimizing frame is given in this article, which is an ordinary differential equation with rational form, the analytical solution that does not always exist. To avoid calculating the solution of ordinary differential equations, a global optimization algorithm for the conditions is proposed, that has a weight function in the objective function. The quintic Pythagorean-Hodograph curve is analyzed concretely with the method, and its objective function and constraint conditions of optimization are clarified. The example is analyzed by using this method with different weight functions and contrasting that approach with its exact value. 展开更多

In this paper a new phase space of hodograph method is adopted to investigate and better understand the two-dimensional angular momentum reversal(H-reversal) trajectories for high performance solar sails within a fixed cone angle.As the hodograph method and the H-reversal trajectory are not very common,both of them are briefly introduced.The relationship between them are constructed and addressed with a sample trajectory.How the phase space varies according to the sail quality and the fixed sail cone angle is also studied.Through variation of the phase space,the minimum sail lightness number can be obtained by solving a set of algebraic equations instead of a parameter optimization problem.For a given sail lightness number,there are three types of the two-dimensional possible heliocentric motion,including the spiral inward trajectories towards the Sun,the H-reversal trajectories and the directly outward escape trajectories.The boundaries that separate these different groups are easily determined by using the phase space.Finally,the method and procedures to achieve the feasible region of the H-reversal trajectory with required perihelion distance are presented in detail. 展开更多
