Background: The sustainability of animal production system depends mostly on feed management. Therefore, the combination of local leguminous forage as source of protein and ginger as phytobiotics can be one of the safe ways to attain this goal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ginger meal associated with ration containing local protein sources Desmodium intortum and/or Stylosanthes guianensis on growth performance in rabbits. Method: A total of 64 young rabbits (32 males and 32 females) with an average weight of 1000 ± 200 g were used. There were randomly assigned to 8 experimental diets in a complete randomized designed with 8 rabbits per treatment and each rabbit serving as an experimental unit. From the control diet R0 (basal diet without legumes and phytobiotic) and 7 other diets (treatment): R1(basal diet without legumes + 1% ginger powder), R2 (basal diet + 20% S. guianensis + 1% ginger meal), R3 (basal diet + 20% D. intortum + 1% ginger powder), R4 (basal diet + 20% D. intortum + 0% ginger powder), R5 (basal diet + 20% S. guianensis + 0% ginger powder), R6 (basal diet + 10% D. intortum + 10% S. guianensis + 0% ginger powder) R7 (basal diet + 10% D. intortum + 10% S. guianensis + 1% ginger powder). Feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, carcass yield and average daily consumption were evaluated using standard procedures. Results: Feed intake and feed conversion ratio of animals fed R0 and R7 rations were significantly improved. Animals fed R1 ration had a significantly lower mean value for feed conversion ratio (1.83 g) and feed intake (1.67 g) respectively. Live weight (2432.54 g), total weight gain (1644.90 g), average daily feed intake (109.06 g) and dressed weight (1404.25 g) were significantly higher for rabbits fed R1 ration. Relative weights of organs of animals fed R4 ration were significantly higher. Conclusion: Feeding rabbits with R1 diet significantly improved growth performance. 展开更多

Microbial resistance in livestock has become a subject of great concern of public and scientific interest. This study was designed to assess the effects of methenamine feeding regime on growth performances of broilers chickens. For this purpose, 120 chicks of Cobb 500 strain, including 60 males and 60 females of 21 days old with an average weight of 639<span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">g and 584</span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">g respectively were used. They were randomly distributed in 60 experimental units of 2 chicks of same sex per cage until 49 days. Methenamine was incorporated in feed (TA), acidified (TEa) and non acidified (TE) water and compared to an antibiotic medicated diet as positive control (T0+) and a ration without any supplement as negative control (T0). The main results showed that, regardless of the feeding regime, methenamine significantly (p <</span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">0.05) increased feed inteake, body weight, weight gain and decreased (p <</span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:;" "=""><span style="font-family:Verdana;">0.05) feed conversion ratio. Methenamine whatever the feeding regime induced a significant increase in lactic acid bacteria counts compared to coliforms and coccidies counts. </span><i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Salmonella </span></i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">were absent throughout the trial period. Regardless of sex and feeding regime, hematological parameters were not significantly affected, with the exception of white blood cell and platelet concentration that decreased significantly (p <</span></span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">0.05) in male broilers. Serum content in ASAT (Aspartate-transferase), ALAT (Alanine-transferase), creatinine, urea and LDL-</span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">cholesterol decreased significantly (p <</span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span><span style="font-family:Verdana;">0.05), while HDL-cholesterol increased. Histology of organs was not affected. Feeding methenamine to broiler chickens through drinking water can be used as an alternative to antibiotic to improve growth performances.</span> 展开更多

Background Exogenous xylanase can increase utilization of fiber and energy when included in diets for pigs, and xylo-oligosaccharides(XOS)may improve growth performance of pigs by modulating intestinal fermentation. However,it is unclear if a stimbiotic(i.e.,a combination of xylanase and XOS)has superior effects compared with a xylanase alone, and there is a lack of data demonstrating if xylanase fed to lactating sows influences growth performance of weanling pigs. Therefore, two hypotheses were tested:1)xylanase and stimbiotic improve growth performance, apparent total tract digestibility(ATTD)of gross energy(GE)and total dietary fiber(TDF),digestible energy(DE),and intestinal health of weanling pigs and 2)offspring of sows fed xylanase in lactation have greater growth performance after weaning than offspring of sows fed no xylanase during lactation. Methods One hundred and twenty pigs were weaned from sows fed a diet without xylanase, and 120 pigs were weaned from sows fed a lactation diet containing 16,000 beechwood xylanase units per kg(initial weight:5.81±0.50 kg).Pigs were allotted to a 2×3 factorial with two sow groups(lactation diet without or with xylanase)and three dietary treatments(i.e.,control,control plus xylanase,or control plus stimbiotic). Results There were no interactions between sow treatment and post-weaning pig treatment, and sow treatment did not impact post-weaning growth or ATTD of GE and TDF in weaned pigs. From d 15 to 28 post-weaning,the ADG,G:F,ATTD of GE and TDF,and concentration of DE were greater(P<0.05)for pigs fed the diet with stimbiotic than if fed the xylanase diet or the control diet, and pigs fed the xylanase diet had greater(P<0.05)ADG,G:F,ATTD of GE and TDF,and concentration of DE than pigs fed the control diet. From d 29 to 42 post-weaning,pigs fed the diets with xylanase or stimbiotic had greater(P<0.05)ADG,ATTD of GE and TDF,and DE than pigs fed the control diet. Conclusions Pigs fed xylanase or stimbiotic had greater ATTD of GE and TDF,greater DE,and greater overall ADG,G:F,and final body weight on d 42 post-weaning than pigs fed the control diet, but feeding sows xylanase in lactation did not influence post-weaning growth performance. 展开更多

This study was conducted at Fafan Research Center, Golajo research site to evaluate the effect of Moringa stenopetala and pigeon pea leaf supplementation on growth performance of short-eared Somali goat breed. A total of fifteen yearling indigenous short-eared Somali goat breeds with an initial weight of 15.2 ± 0.30 kg were assigned to three treatment groups using completely randomized design. Pigeon pea (Pp) and Moringa stenopetala (MS) feeds were formulated using 0%, 5%, and 10% inclusion levels of MSLM and PPLM as experimental diets, respectively. The feed of the experiment was prepared in two levels (2 kg of Moringa stenopetala and 2 kg of pigeon pea) and was supplemented to experimental animals in treatments one and two, respectively. The average e initial body weight of selected male goats was 18.82 ± 0.37, 18.8 ± 0.37 and 17.8 ± 0.37 kg under treatment groups T1, T2 and control respectively. Data was analyzed using general linear model (GLM) procedure of SAS computer package Version 9.0 (SAS, 2002). The final weights gain (FWG) of goats on T1 and T2 of experimental group was significantly (P 0.05) the final weight gain of goat supplemented on Moringa stenopetala (T1) and pigeon pea levels (T2). The mean average weight gains (AWG) obtained from the supplemented group in this study were 7.50 ± 0.37 and 7.82 ± 0.37 kg for T1 and T2, whereas mean weight gains for un-supplemented goats were found to be 6.26 ± 0.37 kg. Feeding of dried Moringa stenopetala and pigeon pea leaves mixture improved body weights and average daily body weight gain without affecting feed intake and overall health of Somali goat breed. As Moringa stenopetala and pigeon pea leaves are rich nitrogen/protein source, they can be used effectively as substitute for conventional concentrate in the diet of growing goats at small holder farmer’s level where they can be grown in abundance. Therefore, for higher quality of forage and higher total DM yield for animal feeding, moringa should be harvested at wider harvesting intervals of at least 6th- to 8th-week intervals. Similarly, for pigeon peas, 4- to 6-week harvesting interval can result in optimum forage as well as feed quality and resulted in better growth performances for Somali short-eared goat breeds. 展开更多

Background The present experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of commercially processed former foodstuffs(cFF)as dietary substitutes of corn, soybean meal and soybean oil on the growth performance, apparent total tract digestibil-ity(ATTD),hematobiochemical profiles, and liver gene abundance in broiler chickens. Two hundred one-day-old male ROSS-308 chicks were assigned to 4 dietary groups(5 replicates of ten birds per replicate)according to their average body weight(BW,38.0±0.11 g).All groups received a two-phase feeding program:starter,d 1–12 and grower,d 12–33.The control group(cFF0)was fed a standard commercial feed based on corn, soybean meal and soybean oil.The other three groups received diets in which the feed based on corn, soybean meal, and soybean oil was partially replaced with cFF at a substitution level of 6.25%(cFF6.25),12.5%(cFF12.5)or 25%(cFF25)for the following 33 d.Results The growth performance data showed no differences in BW or average daily gain among groups, although the average daily feed intake decreased during the grower period(12–33 d)and over entire experimental period(1–33 d)in a linear manner as the cFF inclusion level rose(P=0.026),positively affecting the gain to feed ratio(P=0.001).The ATTD of dry matter of the cFF-fed groups were greater with respect to control group and increased throughout the experimental period, whereas the ATTD of ether extract linearly decreased with increasing levels of cFF-fed groups compared with control group and throughout the experimental period(P<0.05).Additionally,a lin-ear increase in the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio, serum cholesterol, triglycerides and alanine-aminotransferase were observed with increasing dietary levels of cFF(P<0.05);however,no differences were observed in lipoprotein lipase or sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor gene abundance. Conclusions The results of this experiment demonstrate that it is possible to incorporate cFF into nutritionally balanced diets for broiler chickens, even up to 25%substitution levels, for up to 33 d without adversely impacting the overall growth performance of male broiler chickens raised under commercial conditions.Further studies are essential to validate the hematological trait findings. 展开更多

Background The protein sources in pig diets strongly rely on soybean meal, but its production has been associated with soil degradation, deforestation and loss of biodiversity.Microalga Spirulina can be a potentially more sustainable alternative to soybean meal, but comprehensive information about its use in growing pigs is still lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of partial to full replacement of dietary soybean meal with Spirulina on the growth and carcass traits of growing pigs and on the chemical and physical attributes of the meat. Methods Eighty-eight pigs, gilts and barrows mixed together, with initial body weight of 52.4±4.2 kg,were allotted into 4 isoenergetic, isoproteic, and isoaminoacidic dietary treatments, which included a conventional control diet based on cereals and soybean meal and one of 3 diets formulated by replacing nearly 33%,66%or 100%soybean with Spirulina. Each treatment had 2 pens(11 pigs/pen),which were equipped with electronic feeders that were able to record individual feed intake. After 138 d on feed,at 174.9±6.4 kg body weight, the pigs were slaughtered, and the carcass traits and meat quality parameters from loin samples were assessed. Results The palatability of feeds was not depressed in pigs fed Spirulina, even when the soybean was completely replaced by the microalga. The incorporation of Spirulina in the diets in place of soybean did not impair the growth rate or feed efficiency, irrespective of the extent of replacement. The carcass traits and yield of commercial cuts were comparable for all Spirulina-included compared with those of the soybean-based groups, and the same was found for the chemical and physical attributes of loin meat. Conclusion The results obtained at the herd and slaughter levels revealed that the replacement of soybean meal with Spirulina did not negatively affect the growth or carcass traits of growing pigs or the main attributes of meat. Therefore, this study provides, for the first time, insights into the technical possibility of switching growing pig feeding systems toward more environmentally sustainable diets by including a microalga originating from landless feed production systems, which does not result in soil degradation or loss of biodiversity. 展开更多

[Objective]The paper was to investigate the effects of substituting corn pellets with potato residue on the growth performance, rumen fermentation indicators and economic benefits of Xinjiang Brown cattle.[Method]A total of 80 Xinjiang Brown cattle, each 22 months old and with a similar body weight of(250±15)kg,were randomly assigned to four groups, with 20 cattle in each group, utilizing a single-factor experimental design. The total mixed diets for the experimental groups Ⅰ,Ⅱ,and Ⅲ were formulated by substituting corn pellets with 2.00%,4.00%,and 6.00%potato residue, respectively, while the diet in the control group was not substituted with potato residue. The duration of the test was 100 d,which comprised a pre-test period of 10 d and a formal test period of 90 d.During the test period, the average dry matter intake, average daily weight gain and feed-gain ratio were assessed at 30-day intervals, and body size indicators were measured on days 0 and 90.Rumen fluid samples were collected from the oral cavity on days 0,30,60,and 90 to assess rumen fermentation parameters.Additionally, jugular blood samples were obtained during the fasting period, and serum was separated for the analysis of total protein mass concentration, urea nitrogen, and glucose concentration.Furthermore, the economic benefits accrued during the test period were calculated.[Result]The dry matter intake in experimental group Ⅰ was significantly higher than that in the control group from days 31 to 60(P<0.05).In contrast, the differences in dry matter intake between experimental groups Ⅱ and Ⅲ and the control group were not statistically significant(P>0.05).From days 61 to 90,the dry matter intake in experimental group Ⅰ remained significantly higher than that in the other groups(P<0.05).Throughout the entire experimental period, the average daily weight gain observed in experimental group Ⅰ was significantly greater than that recorded in the other groups(P<0.05).Additionally,the total weight gain over the entire period was significantly higher than that of experimental group Ⅱ(P<0.05)and markedly higher than that of both the control group and experimental group Ⅲ(P<0.01).The feed-gain ratio in experimental group Ⅰ was significantly lower than that in experimental group Ⅱ(P<0.05).There were no statisticaly significant differences observed in body height, slope length, thoracic circumference, abdominal circumference, rumen pH,acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, valeric acid, total volatile fatty acids, and ammoniacal nitrogen mass concentration among the groups(P>0.05).On the 90th day of the experiment, the serum urea nitrogen concentration in beef cattle from experimental groups Ⅰ and Ⅱ was significantly lower than that in the control group and experimental group Ⅲ(P<0.05).Additionally,the profit margins in experimental groups Ⅰ,Ⅱ,and Ⅲ were higher than those in the control group, and the profit margin in experimental group Ⅰ was the highest.[Conclusion]The substitution of corn pellets with potato residue has the potential to enhance the average daily weight gain and total weight gain throughout the entire period in beef cattle, while simultaneously reducing the feed-gain ratio. However, this substitution does not appear to have a significant impact on body size indicators, rumen fermentation parameters,or the concentrations of serum total protein and glucose in beef cattle.Furthermore, this approach may yield improved breeding profitability, with a recommended substitution ratio of 2.00%based on the conditions of this experiment. 展开更多

Background Pigs fed diets with different ingredients but identical nutritional levels show significant differences in growth performance, indicating that growth may also be influenced by the synchronicity of dietary carbon and nitrogen supply. Therefore, this study aimed to determine glucose release kinetics of various feed ingredients,to investigate a glucose release pattern that is conducive to synchronized carbon–nitrogen supply, and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms by which this synchronization optimizes growth of pigs. Results We analyzed the glucose release kinetics of 23 feed ingredients in vitro and found that their glucose release rates and amounts varied greatly.Based on this,a nitrogen-free diet and 5 purified diets, which represented the observed variations in glucose release rates and quantities among feed ingredients, were designed for 18 ileal-cannulated pigs. The results demonstrated that slower glucose release pattern could disrupt the synchrony of dietary carbon and nitrogen supply, reducing the growth of pigs and increasing nitrogen losses.Specifically, the diet with slower and moderate amounts of glucose release showed a relatively slower release of amino acids.Pigs fed this diet had the lower amino acid digestibility and the enrichment of harmful bacteria, such as Streptococcus,in the terminal ileum.Conversely, the diets with slower and lower glucose release exhibited a relatively rapid release of amino acids but also resulted in poor growth. They increased glucogenic amino acid digestibility and potentially enriched bacteria involved in nitrogen cycling and carbon metabolism.Notably, only the diet with rapid glucose release achieved synchronized and rapid release of nutrients.Pigs fed this diet exhibited higher amino acid digestibility, decreased harmful bacteria enrichment, improved nutrient utilization, and enhanced short-term growth performance. Conclusions Our research analyzed significant differences in glucose release kinetics among swine feed ingredients and revealed that slow glucose release disrupted dietary carbon–nitrogen supply synchrony, shifting amino acid utilization and enriching pathogens, negatively impacting growth and nutrient utilization.Consequently, choosing feed ingredients releasing glucose at a rapid rate to balance dietary carbon and nitrogen supply helps promote pig growth, and ensures efficient feed utilization. 展开更多

One of the main obstacles to the development of aquaculture in Senegal is the availability of fry and juveniles in sufficient quantities. The objective of our study is to evaluate the effects of treatment with the hormone 17 alpha methyl testosterone (17-&-MT) and different doses of Nauclea latifolia root powder on the masculinization rates of tilapia Oreochromis niloticus larvae in Senegal. A total of 450 larvae of Oreochromis niloticus, with an average size of 0.012 g, were placed in 15 aquariums, each containing 30 individuals and fed one of the 5 diets in triplicate. These individuals were fed either a diet containing a plant extract at a dose of 180 mg (T180), 200 mg (T200) and 250 mg (T250) per kg of food, or a diet containing 60 mg/kg of the hormone 17-&-MT (TMT), or a diet without either the plant extract or the hormone (T0). Individuals were fed for 30 days with the treatment diets, and then with the industrial feed for the rest of the experiment. At the end of the study, the results of the masculinization rate were: 80.49%, 73.13%, 69.23%, 66.67% and 45.95% for T250;T200, TMT, T180 and T0 respectively. In summary, we can say that the 250 mg/kg dose provides better masculinization, followed by 200mg/kg and then 17 α MT. For the plant, the increase in the percentage of males is dose-dependent. These results also translate into better growth of individuals in this order. However, the relatively lower survival rates observed in batches treated with Nauclea latifolia extract indicate that these treatments could have a deleterious effect on the survival of Oreochromis niloticus larvae. These results suggest the use of N. latifolia extract at a dose of 250 mg/kg feed for better production of male O. niloticus larvae without compromising their growth. 展开更多

The aim of this study was to investigate the biochemical, physiological and morphological responses of sugarcane to iso- osmotic salt and water-deficit stress. Disease-free sugarcane plantlets derived from meristem cuttings were photo- autotrophically grown in MS media and subsequently exposed to -0.23 (control), -0.67 or -1.20 MPa iso-osmotic NaCl (salt stress) or mannitol (water-deficit stress). Chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), total carotenoids (Cx+c), maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), photon yield of PSII (ΦPSII), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) in the stressed plantlets were significantly reduced when compared to those of plantlets of the control group (without mannitol or NaCl), leading to net-photosynthetic rate (Pn) and growth reduction with positive correlation. In addition, physiological changes and growth parameters of plantlets in the salt stress conditions were more sharply reduced than those in waterdeficit stress conditions. On the other hand, the proline content and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) in the leaves of stressed plantlets increased significantly, especially in response to iso-osmotic salt stress. The chlorophyll pigments in iso-osmotic stressed leaves were significantly degraded (r^2 = 0.93), related to low water oxidation (r^2 = 0.87), low net- photosynthetic rate (r^2 = 0.81), and growth reduction (r^2 = 0.97). The multivariate biochemical, physiological and growth parameters in the present study should be further used to develop salt, or drought, tolerance indices in sugarcane breeding programs. 展开更多

[Objective] The paper was to study the effects on growth performance and feed digestibility of Hainan black pigs by adding lysine in low prntein diet. [Method] A tntal of 36 Hainan black pigs with the body weight of (46.34±3.06) kg were randomly divided into three groups: con- trol group (protein level 15%, lysine level 0.83%), experimental grnup 1 (protein level 13%, 0.83%), and experimental group II (protein level 13%, lysine level 1.03), each group had three replicates of four pigs. The trial lasted 35 d. [Result] The growth performance of Hainan black pig in grnup II had no significan! difference with that in contrail group (P〉0.05). The apparent digestibility of chide protein and phosphorus of Hainan black pigs in Group II increased significantly (P〈0.05), which were increased by 10.08% and 11.85% respectively compared to the control group; the apparent digestibility of calcium was increased, but the difference was not signifieant (P〉0.05). [Conclusion] It will not reduce the growth performance of Hainan blaek pig when the protein level of diet is reduced by 2% and Ihe lysine level is increased to 1.03%. It is recommended that the diet can be used in the production of llainan black pig. 展开更多

[Objective] This study aimed to evaluate growth performance of hybrid progenies of 10 grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) populations from different ge- ographical origins (Foshan population, Zhaoqing population, Jingzhou population 1, Jingzhou population 2, Jingzhou population 3, Ezhou population, Yiyang population, Changsha population 1, Changsha population 2 and Jiangsu population). [Method] Fifteen hybrid combinations were established with these ten grass carp populations and cultured in the same pond. The body mass of hybrid progenies was measured at the age of 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 18 months, respectively. Using body mass at the age of 4 months as a concomitant variable, the growth performance of proge- nies from different hybrid combinations was analyzed by covariance analysis. [Re- suit] The average body mass of hybrid progenies of Jingzhou population 2 c2 x Foshan population $ reached the maximum (1 892.90 g) at the age of 18 months, which was 3.51%-32.36% higher than that of other hybrid progenies. Multiple com- parison analysis showed that average body mass of hybrid progenies of Jingzhou population 2 2 x Foshan population ♂ and Jingzhou population 1 ♀× Foshan population ♂ was significantly higher than that of other hybrid progenies (P〈0.05). [Conclusion] In the production process, Jingzhou population 2 ♀ × Foshan popula- tion 5 and Jingzhou population 1 ♀×Foshan population ♂ can be used to pro- duce high-quality fries, thereby greatly improving economic benefits. This study laid the foundation for establishment of rapid-growing grass carp core populations. 展开更多

Both quantitatively and qualitatively, underfeeding materialized by underconsumption of meat remains one of the things most felt in Africa. To make up for this deficit, emphasis is placed on the production of short-cycle animals such as poultry, rabbits and pork. Among these animals, pig plays a very important socio-economic role in the life of local populations. Its meat is required in various ceremonies such as the dowry and funerals. For this purpose, twenty four males cross piglets with Large White × Landrace × Duroc × Pietrain phenotypic traits, aged between 58 and 62 days and having an average weight of 9.978 ± 1.11 kg were used to evaluate the influence of graded levels of bovine rumen content on the growth performances of grower finisher pigs. The piglets were submitted to 4 treatments, housed in pairs and fed ad libitum with a diet containing 0, 5%, 10% and 20% bovine rumen content. The trial which lasted for 18 weeks was carried out at the Teaching and Research Farm of the University of Dschang. The results showed that drying process destroyed most microbes found in the rumen content. These results also showed that the incorporation of bovine rumen content in diets had no significant (p > 0.05) effect on feed conversion ratio efficiency. However, feed intake, body weight and body weight gain were significantly higher in pigs fed with a diet (R5) containing 5% of bovine rumen content. Feed cost per kg of live body weight was significantly (p 20 diet compared to the animals receiving the control diet which was lower than that of the other two diets (R0) and (R5) but comparable with animals fed diet R10. The analysis of the carcass showed that increasing incorporation level of bovine rumen content in the diet reduces abdominal fat and back fat thickness. For offal, the lowest weight was recorded in animals fed the control diet (R0) and the highest weight with animals fed a diet containing 5% bovine rumen content. Carcass length of animals fed the control diet (R0) was significantly greater compared with the carcass of animals fed diet R10 and comparable to that of the other two treatments. The pH of the pork was comparable (p > 0.05) in all the treatments. In conclusion, a diet containing 5% bovine rumen content induced the best growth performances compared to all the other groups, while diet R20 produced lean pork with the higher production cost. 展开更多

Background: Colibacillosis caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coil (E. coil} results in economic losses in the poultry industry. Antibiotics are usually used to control colibacillosis, however, E. coli has varying degrees of resistance to different antibiotics. Therefore the use of probiotics is becoming accepted as an alternative to antibiotics. In this study, we evaluated the effects of Clostfidium butyricum (C. butyficum) on growth performance, immune response, intestinal barrier function, and digestive enzyme activity in broiler chickens challenged with Eschefichia coli (E. coil) K88. Methods: The chickens were randomly divided into four treatment groups for 28 days. Negative control treatment (NC) consisted of birds fed a basal diet without E. coil K88 challenge and positive control treatment (PC) consisted of birds fed a basal diet and challenged with E. coil K88. C. buO/ricum probiotic treatment (CB) consisted of birds fed a diet containing 2 x 107 cfu C. buO/ricum/kg of diet and challenged with E. coil K88. Colistin sulfate antibiotic treatment (CS) consisted of birds fed a diet containing 20 mg colistin sulfate/kg of diet and challenged with E. coil K88. Results: The body weight (BW) and average day gain (ADG) in the broilers of CB group were higher (P 〈 0.05) than the broilers in the PC group overall except the ADG in the 14-21 d post-challenge. The birds in CB treatment had higher (P 〈 0.05) concentration of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) at 3 and 7 d post-challenge, and higher (P 〈 0.05) concentration of interleukin-4 (IL-4) at 14 d post-challenge than those in the PC treatment group. The concentration of serum endotoxin in CB birds was lower (P 〈 0.05) at 21 d post-challenge, and the concentrations of serum diamine oxidase in CB birds were lower (P 〈 0.05) at 14 and 21 d post-challenge than in PC birds. Birds in CB treatment group had higher (P 〈 0.05) jejunum villi height than those in PC, NC, or CS treatment at 7, 14, and 21 d post-challenge. In comparison to PC birds, the CB birds had lower (P 〈 0.05) jejunum crypt depth during the whole experiment. The birds in CB or CS treatment group had higher (P 〈 0.05) activities of amylase and protease at 3, 7, and 14 d post-challenge, and higher (P 〈 0.05) activity of lipase at 3, 7 d post-challenge than PC birds. 展开更多

Background: Weanling pigs, with immature immune system and physiological function, usually experience postweaning diarrhea. This study determined the effects of dietary Clostridium butyricum supplementation on growth performance, diarrhea, and immunity of weaned pigs challenged with lipopolysaccharide(LPS).Methods: In Experiment(Exp.) 1,144 weaned piglets were weaned at 21 d and randomly assigned to six groups, with six replicates per group and four pigs per replicate, receiving a control diet(CON) or diet supplemented with antibiotics(AB) or C. butyricum(CB)(0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%, or 0.8%), respectively. All diets in Exp. 1 were a highly digestible basal diet, with 3,000 mg/kg zinc oxide supplied in the first 2 wk only. In Exp. 2, 180 piglets were weaned at 21 d and randomly assigned to five groups, with six replicates per group and six pigs per replicate, receiving CON, AB, or CB(0.2%, 0.4%, or 0.6%) diets. The digestibility of diets was lower than those in Exp. 1, and did not include zinc oxide. At 36 d of Exp. 2, 12 piglets were selected from each of the CON and 0.4% CB groups, six piglets were intraperitoneally injected with LPS(50 μg/kg body weight) and the other six piglets with normal saline;animals were killed at 4 h after injection to collect blood, intestine, and digesta samples for biochemical analysis. Results: In Exp. 1, CB and AB diets had no effect on growth performance of piglets. In Exp. 2, 0.4% CB decreased feed-gain ratio(P < 0.1), diarrhea score(P < 0.05), and increased duodenal, jejunal, and ileal villus height and jejunal villus height/crypt depth(P < 0.05). The 0.4% CB decreased the plasma tumor necrosis factor(TNF) α(P < 0.05) but increased ileal mucosa IL-10 and TLR2 mRNA expression(P < 0.05). Furthermore, 0.4% CB altered the microbial profile, with Bacillus and Ruminococcaceae UGG-003 at genus level and Lactobacillus casei and Parasutterella secunda at species level were higher than CON in colonic content(P < 0.05).Conclusions: Dietary C. butyricum supplementation had positive effects on growth of weaned piglets with less digestible diets. There was a tendency to reduce the feed-gain ratio, which could reduce feed costs in pig production. Moreover, C. butyricum decreased post-weaning diarrhea by improving the intestinal morphology, intestinal microflora profile, and immune function. 展开更多
