A series of Ni based catalysts with different supports and basic additives were prepared by sequential impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, H2-TPR and CO2-TPD techniques. It was found that the introduction of basic additives enhanced the basicities of catalyats and promoted the dispersities of Ni particles by strong interaction between Ni2+ and basic additives. Among the Ni based catalysts, 10%Ni/10%La203/ZrO2 showed the superior performance in sorbitol hydrogenolysis. The synergistic effect of Ni and La203 was proven to play an essential role in selective synthesis of EG and 1,2-PG. In the optimal reaction condition, the catalyst presented 100% sorbitol conversion and over 48% glycols (EG and 1,2-PG) yield. The kinetics study of polyols (sorbitol, xylitol and glycerol) hydrogenolysis showed that polyols with more hydroxyl number have higher activity and products distribution was final results of kinetic balance, which could give us some inspiration abeut how to change the products selectivity. 展开更多

The Soave-Redlich-Kwong (SRK-EOS) and Peng-Robinson (PR-EOS) equations of state are used often to describe the behavior of pure substances and mixtures despite difficulties in handling substances, like water, with high polarity and hydrogen bonding. They were employed in studying the binary vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) of methane + methanol, monoethylene glycol (MEG), and triethylene glycol (TEG). These liquids are used to inhibit the formation of gas hydrates. The investigation focused on the conditions at which methane-water clathrates can form 283.89?K to 323.56?K and 5.01?MPa to 18.48?MPa. The pressure of methane in methanol is overestimated by a factor of two by either the SRK-EOS or the PR-EOS. In the methane + MEG system, the predicted pressures for both equations of state are generally less than experimental pressure except for the highest concentration of methane in MEG calculated by the SRK-EOS. In the methane + TEG system, the predictions of both models are close and trend similarly. Because of the comparative lack of extensive experimental methane + TEG data, the similarity of the methane + TEG computed results can be used as a basis for further study of this system experimentally. 展开更多

Poly ethylene glycols (PEG-200, 400, 600, 4000 and 6000) supported reactions were conducted with certain α, β-unsaturated acids in presence of metal nitrates under solvent free (solid state) and mineral acid free conditions. The reactants were ground in a mortar with a pestle for about 30 minutes. The aromatic acids underwent nitro decarboxylation and afforded β-nitro styrene derivatives in very good yield while α, β-unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids gave corresponding nitro derivatives. Addition of PEG accelerated rate of the reaction enormously. Reaction times substantially decreased from several hours to few minutes followed by highly significant increase in the product yield. Among the several PEGs PEG-300 has been found to be much more effective than other PEGs. 展开更多

Liver ischemia-reperfusion injury(IRI) is an inherent feature of liver surgery and liver transplantation in which damage to a hypoxic organ(ischemia) is exacerbated following the return of oxygen delivery(reperfusion)... Liver ischemia-reperfusion injury(IRI) is an inherent feature of liver surgery and liver transplantation in which damage to a hypoxic organ(ischemia) is exacerbated following the return of oxygen delivery(reperfusion). IRI is a major cause of primary nonfunction after transplantation and may lead to graft rejection, regardless of immunological considerations. The immediate response involves the disruption of cellular mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and the accumulation of metabolic intermediates during the ischemic period, and oxidative stress during blood flow restoration. Moreover, a complex cascade of inflammatory mediators is generated during reperfusion, contributing to the extension of the damage and finally to organ failure. A variety of pharmacological interventions(antioxidants, anticytokines, etc.) have been proposed to alleviate graft injury but their usefulness is limited by the local and specific action of the drugs and by their potential undesirable toxic effects. Polyethylene glycols(PEGs), which are non-toxic water-soluble compounds approved by the FDA, have been widely used as a vehicle or a base in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and also as adjuvants for ameliorating drug pharmacokinetics. Some PEGs are also currently used as additives in organ preservation solutions prior to transplantation in order to limit the damage associated with cold ischemia reperfusion. More recently, the administration of PEGs of different molecular weights by intravenous injection has emerged as a new therapeutic tool to protect liver grafts from IRI. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge concerning the use of PEGs as a useful target for limiting liver IRI. 展开更多

Electrical and electronic devices face significant challenges in heatmanagement due to their compact size and high heat flux,which negatively impact performance and reliability.Conventional coolingmethods,such as forced air cooling,often struggle to transfer heat efficiently.In contrast,thermoelectric coolers(TECs)provide an innovative active cooling solution to meet growing thermal management demands.In this research,a refrigerant based on mono ethylene glycol and distilled water was used instead of using gases,in addition to using thermoelectric cooling units instead of using a compressor in traditional refrigeration systems.This study evaluates the performance of a Peltierbased thermalmanagement systemby analyzing the effects of using two,three,and four Peltiermodules on cooling rates,power consumption,temperature reduction,and system efficiency.Experimental results indicate that increasing the number of Peltier modules significantly enhances cooling performance.The four-module system achieved an optimal balance between cooling speed and energy efficiency,reducing the temperature of a liquidmixture(30% mono ethylene glycol+70% distilled water plus laser dyes)to 8℃ in just 17 min.It demonstrated a cooling rate of 0.794℃/min and a high coefficient of performance(COP)of 1.2 while consuming less energy than the two-and three-module systems.Furthermore,the study revealed that increasing the number of modules led to faster air cooling and improved temperature reduction.These findings highlight the importance of selecting the optimal number of Peltier modules to enhance efficiency and cooling speed whileminimizing energy consumption.This makes TEC technology a sustainable and effective solution for applications requiring rapid and reliable thermal management. 展开更多

The reduction of frictional power losses in power transmitting gears takes a crucial role in the design of energy-and resource-efficient drivetrains.Water-containing lubricants like glycerol and polyalkylene glycols have shown great potential in achieving friction within the superlubricity regime with coefficients of friction lower than 0.01 under elastohydrodynamic lubrication.Additionally,a bio-based production of the base stocks can lead to the development of green lubricants.However,one challenge associated with the application of water-containing lubricants to gearboxes is the evaporation of water and its impact on the lubricant properties.In this study,the influence of water evaporation on elastohydrodynamic friction and film thickness was investigated for three water-containing polyalkylene glycols.Two nominal water contents of 20 wt%and 40 wt%and two viscosities were considered.The results show that the friction increases continuously with higher evaporated water content,while the overall friction level remains low in nearly water-free states.A similar trend is observed for film thickness,where the strong increase in viscosity results in a notable increase in film thickness.Nevertheless,the sensitivity of friction and film thickness to water evaporation is low for small amounts of evaporated water.This allows generous thresholds for permissible variations in water content. 展开更多

The bowel preparation is a crucial step to achieve an optimal quality in colonoscopy.The major clinical impact of an adequate colonic cleansing is to allow a more detailed and thorough inspection reducing the rates of missing lesions during the procedure and consequently reducing the incidence of interval colorectal carcinomas.Currently there are different colonoscopic preparation schemes,being the polyethylene glycol(PEG)based regimen one of the most used and recommended by the main international clinical guidelines.Nevertheless,PEG preparation requires the ingestion of considerably large volumes to achieve an optimal colonic cleansing,leading to poor tolerability in may patients,particularly in an elderly population.Other aspects that make accessibility to most colonoscopy preparation regimens difficult is their high cost and low availability.New options of colonoscopic preparation schemes based on oral lactulose are emerging with promising results,showing excellent efficacy-safety profiles and high tolerability indexes.Lactulose regimens present other benefits such as low cost and wide availability.The aim of this review is to analyze the scientific evidence to date and the current status of colonoscopy bowel preparation utilizing lactulose-based regimens,in order to consolidate this agent as a feasible“new player”in the field of colonoscopic preparation. 展开更多

Developing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process for the production of valuable chemicals from abundant herbal biomass receives great attentions in recent years.Herein,taking advantage of the“lignin first”strategy,corn straw is converted to valuable chemicals including lignin monomers,furfural and 5-methoxymethylfurfural via a two steps process.The key of this research lies in the development of a green and low-cost catalytic process utilizing magnetic Raney Ni catalyst and high boiling point ethylene glycol.The utilization of neat ethylene glycol as the sole slovent under atmospheric conditions obviates the need for additional additives,thereby facilitating the entire process to be conducted in glass flasks and rendering it highly convenient for scaling up.In the initial step,depolymerization of corn straw lignin resulted in a monomer yield of 18.1 wt%.Subsequently,in a dimethyl carbonate system,the carbohydrate component underwent complete conversion in a one-pot process,yielding furfural and 5-methoxymethylfurfural as the primary products with an impressive yield of 47.7%. 展开更多

Peripheral nerve injuries result in the rapid degeneration of distal nerve segments and immediate loss of motor and sensory functions;behavioral recovery is typically poor.We used a plasmalemmal fusogen,polyethylene glycol(PEG),to immediately fuse closely apposed open ends of severed proximal and distal axons in rat sciatic nerves.We have previously reported that sciatic nerve axons repaired by PEG-fusion do not undergo Wallerian degeneration,and PEG-fused animals exhibit rapid(within 2–6 weeks)and extensive locomotor recovery.Furthermore,our previous report showed that PEG-fusion of severed sciatic motor axons was non-specific,i.e.,spinal motoneurons in PEG-fused animals were found to project to appropriate as well as inappropriate target muscles.In this study,we examined the consequences of PEG-fusion for sensory axons of the sciatic nerve.Young adult male and female rats(Sprague–Dawley)received either a unilateral single cut or ablation injury to the sciatic nerve and subsequent repair with or without(Negative Control)the application of PEG.Compound action potentials recorded immediately after PEG-fusion repair confirmed conduction across the injury site.The success of PEG-fusion was confirmed through Sciatic Functional Index testing with PEG-fused animals showing improvement in locomotor function beginning at 35 days postoperatively.At 2–42 days postoperatively,we anterogradely labeled sensory afferents from the dorsal aspect of the hindpaw following bilateral intradermal injection of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase.PEG-fusion repair reestablished axonal continuity.Compared to unoperated animals,labeled sensory afferents ipsilateral to the injury in PEG-fused animals were found in the appropriate area of the dorsal horn,as well as inappropriate mediolateral and rostrocaudal areas.Unexpectedly,despite having intact peripheral nerves,similar reorganizations of labeled sensory afferents were also observed contralateral to the injury and repair.This central reorganization may contribute to the improved behavioral recovery seen after PEG-fusion repair,supporting the use of this novel repair methodology over currently available treatments. 展开更多

With the wide application of electromagnetic wave,a high performance electromagnetic shielding material is urgently needed to solve the harm caused by electromagnetic wave.Complete cross-linking strategy is adopted in this paper.Polyacrylamide(PAM)was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of acrylamide(AM)monomer.The obtained PAM was blended with polyethylene glycol(PEG)to prepare PAM/PEG hydrogels and form rigid support structures.Subsequently,the modified carbon nanotubes(S-CNTs)were incorpor-ated into sodium alginate(SA)and PAM/PEG.Finally,Na+was used to trigger SA self-assembly,which significantly improved the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the hydrogels,and prepared PAM/PEG/SA/S-CNTs-Na hydrogels with high tough-ness and strong electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding efficiency(SE).The results showed that the compressive strength of PAM/PEG/SA/S-CNTs-Na hydrogel was 19.05 MPa,which was 7.69%higher than that of PAM/PEG hydrogel(17.69 MPa).More en-couraging,the average EMI SE of PAM/PEG/SA/S-CNTs-Na hydrogels at a thickness of only 3 mm and a CNTs content of 16.53wt%was 32.92 dB,which is 113.21%higher than that of PAM/PEG hydrogels(15.44 dB). 展开更多

Behavioral recovery using(viable)peripheral nerve allografts to repair ablation-type(segmental-loss)peripheral nerve injuries is delayed or poor due to slow and inaccurate axonal regeneration.Furthermore,such peripheral nerve allografts undergo immunological rejection by the host immune system.In contrast,peripheral nerve injuries repaired by polyethylene glycol fusion of peripheral nerve allografts exhibit excellent behavioral recovery within weeks,reduced immune responses,and many axons do not undergo Wallerian degeneration.The relative contribution of neurorrhaphy and polyethylene glycol-fusion of axons versus the effects of polyethylene glycol per se was unknown prior to this study.We hypothesized that polyethylene glycol might have some immune-protective effects,but polyethylene glycol-fusion was necessary to prevent Wallerian degeneration and functional/behavioral recovery.We examined how polyethylene glycol solutions per se affect functional and behavioral recovery and peripheral nerve allograft morphological and immunological responses in the absence of polyethylene glycol-induced axonal fusion.Ablation-type sciatic nerve injuries in outbred Sprague–Dawley rats were repaired according to a modified protocol using the same solutions as polyethylene glycol-fused peripheral nerve allografts,but peripheral nerve allografts were loose-sutured(loose-sutured polyethylene glycol)with an intentional gap of 1–2 mm to prevent fusion by polyethylene glycol of peripheral nerve allograft axons with host axons.Similar to negative control peripheral nerve allografts not treated by polyethylene glycol and in contrast to polyethylene glycol-fused peripheral nerve allografts,animals with loose-sutured polyethylene glycol peripheral nerve allografts exhibited Wallerian degeneration for all axons and myelin degeneration by 7 days postoperatively and did not recover sciatic-mediated behavioral functions by 42 days postoperatively.Other morphological signs of rejection,such as collapsed Schwann cell basal lamina tubes,were absent in polyethylene glycol-fused peripheral nerve allografts but commonly observed in negative control and loose-sutured polyethylene glycol peripheral nerve allografts at 21 days postoperatively.Loose-sutured polyethylene glycol peripheral nerve allografts had more pro-inflammatory and less anti-inflammatory macrophages than negative control peripheral nerve allografts.While T cell counts were similarly high in loose-sutured-polyethylene glycol and negative control peripheral nerve allografts,loose-sutured polyethylene glycol peripheral nerve allografts expressed some cytokines/chemokines important for T cell activation at much lower levels at 14 days postoperatively.MHCI expression was elevated in loose-sutured polyethylene glycol peripheral nerve allografts,but MHCII expression was modestly lower compared to negative control at 21 days postoperatively.We conclude that,while polyethylene glycol per se reduces some immune responses of peripheral nerve allografts,successful polyethylene glycol-fusion repair of some axons is necessary to prevent Wallerian degeneration of those axons and immune rejection of peripheral nerve allografts,and produce recovery of sensory/motor functions and voluntary behaviors.Translation of polyethylene glycol-fusion technologies would produce a paradigm shift from the current clinical practice of waiting days to months to repair ablation peripheral nerve injuries. 展开更多

Successful polyethylene glycol fusion(PEG-fusion)of severed axons following peripheral nerve injuries for PEG-fused axons has been reported to:(1)rapidly restore electrophysiological continuity;(2)prevent distal Wallerian Degeneration and maintain their myelin sheaths;(3)promote primarily motor,voluntary behavioral recoveries as assessed by the Sciatic Functional Index;and,(4)rapidly produce correct and incorrect connections in many possible combinations that produce rapid and extensive recovery of functional peripheral nervous system/central nervous system connections and reflex(e.g.,toe twitch)or voluntary behaviors.The preceding companion paper describes sensory terminal field reo rganization following PEG-fusion repair of sciatic nerve transections or ablations;howeve r,sensory behavioral recovery has not been explicitly explored following PEG-fusion repair.In the current study,we confirmed the success of PEG-fusion surgeries according to criteria(1-3)above and more extensively investigated whether PEG-fusion enhanced mechanical nociceptive recovery following sciatic transection in male and female outbred Sprague-Dawley and inbred Lewis rats.Mechanical nociceptive responses were assessed by measuring withdrawal thresholds using von Frey filaments on the dorsal and midplantar regions of the hindpaws.Dorsal von Frey filament tests were a more reliable method than plantar von Frey filament tests to assess mechanical nociceptive sensitivity following sciatic nerve transections.Baseline withdrawal thresholds of the sciatic-mediated lateral dorsal region differed significantly across strain but not sex.Withdrawal thresholds did not change significantly from baseline in chronic Unoperated and Sham-operated rats.Following sciatic transection,all rats exhibited severe hyposensitivity to stimuli at the lateral dorsal region of the hindpaw ipsilateral to the injury.However,PEG-fused rats exhibited significantly earlier return to baseline withdrawal thresholds than Negative Control rats.Furthermore,PEG-fused rats with significantly improved Sciatic Functional Index scores at or after 4 weeks postoperatively exhibited yet-earlier von Frey filament recove ry compared with those without Sciatic Functional Index recovery,suggesting a correlation between successful PEG-fusion and both motor-dominant and sensory-dominant behavioral recoveries.This correlation was independent of the sex or strain of the rat.Furthermore,our data showed that the acceleration of von Frey filament sensory recovery to baseline was solely due to the PEG-fused sciatic nerve and not saphenous nerve collateral outgrowths.No chronic hypersensitivity developed in any rat up to 12 weeks.All these data suggest that PEG-fusion repair of transection peripheral nerve injuries co uld have important clinical benefits. 展开更多

A nanomicelle(denoted as TPGS/Ppa)was fabricated via the coassembly of the amphiphilic D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate(TPGS)and the hydrophobic photosensitizer pyropheophorbide a(Ppa)for photodynamic therapy(PDT).The obtained nanomicelle possessed a spherical structure with a diameter of(18.0±2.2)nm and a zeta potential of approximately -18 mV.Besides,the nanomicelle exhibited excellent photostability,biocompatibility,and phototoxicity,and could effectively reach the tumor region via the enhanced permeability and retention effect.Additionally,it could be found that the TPGS/Ppa nanomicelle exhibited higher phototoxicity against 4T1 murine mammary cancer cells than free Ppa.In the 4T1 tumor-bearing mouse model,the nanomicelle showed an excellent antitumor therapeutic effect.This study develops a new type of photodynamic nanomicelle TPGS/Ppa,which can increase the accumulation of drugs and prolong their tumor retention time,providing a feasible strategy for realizing the delivery of small-molecule hydrophobic drugs and tumor PDT. 展开更多

Ethylene glycol(EG)is a biomass derivative of polyethylene terephthalate(PET),and its electrocatalytic conversion into high-value chemicals has sparked widespread interest.This study reviews the most recent research development in electrocatalysis-based EG to glycolic acid(GA)conversion.Firstly,the strategies and research results of modulating the electronic structure of catalysts for efficient selective GA production from EG are reviewed.Second,by reviewing the data of in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and in-situ electrochemically attenuated total reflection surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy,the reaction pathway and catalytic mechanism of EG partial oxidation to GA were clarified.Finally,the design and regulation of catalysts for selective oxidation of EG by electrocatalysis in the future are prospected. 展开更多

Electrocatalytic oxidation of surplus ethylene glycol(EG)to high-value glycolic acid(GA)represents a promising approach for sustainable resource utilization,though critical challenges persist in developing durable electrocatalysts and achieving effective recovery of the free acid product from its salt derivatives in alkaline electrolytes.In this work,a PdNi/NF catalyst was rationally synthesized via a one-step electrodeposition method.Systematic characterization revealed that the electron transfer from Ni to Pd modulates *OH adsorption to accelerate EG oxidation reaction(EGOR)while preventing Pd deactivation through oxidation.The optimized system demonstrated exceptional alkaline performance with a glycolic acid Faraday efficiencyof 95%and a current density of 666 mA·cm^(-2).When implemented in an asymmetric EGOR||HER flowcell configuration where only the cathodic electrolyte contains alkaline,the system demonstrated exceptional operational stability by sustaining 70 mA·cm^(-2) current density at a low cell voltage of 0.9 V in neutral media for over 100 h,with product glycolic acid requiring no further acidification.This investigation provides a practical framework for designing efficientelectrocatalytic systems that simplifiesproduct separation steps. 展开更多

Efficacy and palatability of the developed polyethylene glycol-based formula for the treatment of children with functional constipation

BACKGROUND Excipients may improve the palatability of polyethylene glycol(PEG),the firstline treatment for childhood functional constipation(FC),leading to good compliance and improved treatment outcomes.AIM To compare the developed PEG-based formula(PEG-Chula)to the commercial formula for treating childhood FC.METHODS In this randomized controlled trial,we enrolled children aged<18 years with FC diagnosed by the Rome Ⅳ criteria to receive PEG-Chula[four flavors:(1)Strawberry;(2)Lychee;(3)Apple;and(4)Lychee-rose]or Forlax(orange-grapefruit flavor)for eight weeks.The primary outcomes included changes in stool frequency and consistency measured by the Bristol Stool scale.The secondary outcomes were constipation-related symptom improvement,adverse events,and palatability measured by the facial hedonic scale.RESULTS Fifty-two children diagnosed with FC[median age:4.21(2.33,7.88)years;35(67.31%)females]were enrolled.After the 8-week treatment,the mean weekly stool frequency increased in both groups,the mean change was 4.02(95%CI:3.09-4.95)in PEG-Chula and 3.78(95%CI:2.79-4.78)in commercial PEG compared to baseline(P<0.001).The extent of stool consistency improvement did not differ significantly.The most preferred PEG-Chula flavor was rated more palatable than the commercial PEG.Treatment compliance correlated with medication palatability(r=0.34,P=0.013).No significant differences in adverse events were found.CONCLUSION Both PEG-based formulas are effective and safe for managing pediatric FC. 展开更多

The electrochemical upgrading of polyethylene terephthalate(PET)plastics represents a highly promising strategy for achieving high-value utilization of waste resources,and its efficiency is highly related to identify active electrocatalysts for PET-derived ethylene glycol oxidation reaction(EGOR).In this work,atomically thin high-entropy PdPtRhFeCuMo metallene nanoribbons(PdPtRhFeCuMo HMRs)have been synthesized and served as high-performance catalysts for electro-reforming PET plastic,which possess a high current density of 180 mA cm^(-2) at a low potential of 0.9 V for EGOR,with excellent Faraday efficiency(FE)of 96.81%for highly efficient and selective conversion of EG into high-value-added glycolic acid(GA).Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the multi-metallic synergistic effect of PdPtRhFeCuMo HMRs effectively modulates adsorption behavior of intermediates and reduce the EGOR energy barrier,thus promoting the selective EG-to-GA conversion.This study proposes the reasonable design of high-entropy metallene nanoribbons for the electrochemical upgrading of PET plastics to high-value C2 products. 展开更多

Gas-phase synthesis of glycolide(GL)from methyl glycolate(MG)is of great significance for producing biodegradable polyglycolic acid.Here,we report a detailed thermodynamics study for the gas-phase synthesis of GL from MG,which involves complex reaction pathways,by utilizing the Gibbs free energy minimization method.The results indicate that the decompositions of MG and GL and the polymerization of MG are thermodynamically favorable as compared with the target pathway,i.e.,the cyclization of MG.Effects of the reaction conditions including temperature,pressure and feed composition on the formation of GL and linear polymers have also been addressed,which demonstrate that the higher temperature and lower pressure can effectively inhibit the formation of linear methyl ester dimer and improve the selectivity to GL.In addition,the higher N_(2)/MG ratio is beneficial for the formation of GL in the process promoted by catalysts.These thermodynamics results indicate that the process promoted by catalysts would benefit from the kinetics control by high-performance catalysts and the operation at high temperature,low pressure and high N_(2)/MG ratio to enhance the yield of targeted GL.The insights demonstrated here from thermodynamics are valuable for guiding the design of catalysts and/or optimization of reaction conditions for the gas-phase synthesis of GL from MG. 展开更多
