This paper examines the utilization of reinforcement learning as a control strategy, with a particular focus on its deployment in pivotal stages of the product development lifecycle, specifically between system architecture and system integration and verification. A controller based on reinforcement learning was developed and evaluated in comparison to traditional proportional-integral controllers in dynamic and fault-prone environments. The results illustrate the superior adaptability, stability, and optimization potential of the reinforcement learning approach, particularly in addressing dynamic disturbances and ensuring robust performance. The study illustrates how reinforcement learning can facilitate the transition from conceptual design to implementation by automating optimization processes, enabling interface automation, and enhancing system-level testing. Based on the aforementioned findings, this paper presents future directions for research, which include the integration of domain-specific knowledge into the reinforcement learning process and the validation of this process in real-world environments. The results underscore the potential of artificial intelligence-driven methodologies to revolutionize the design and deployment of intelligent mechatronic systems.展开更多

After the original image transformed into a new image with the standard coordinate system, a redundant watermark is adaptively embedded in the discrete wavelet transform(DWT) domain based on the statistical characteristics of the wavelet coefficient block. The coordinate system of watermarked image is reestablished as a calibration system. Regardless of the host image rotated, scaled, or translated(RST), all the geometric attacks are eliminated while the watermarked image is transformed into the standard coordinate system. The proposed watermark detection is a blind detection. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed scheme is robust against common and geometric image processing attacks, particularly its robustness against joint geometric attacks.展开更多

This paper presents a new procedure to determine the reference coordinate system of a beam element under large rotation and elastic deformation based on a newly introduced physical concept: the zero twist sectional condition, which means that a non-twisted section between two nodes always exists and this section can reasonably be regarded as a reference coordinate system to calculate the internal element forces. This method can avoid the disagreement of the reference coordinates which might occur under large spatial rotations and deformations. Numerical examples given in the paper prove that this procedure guarantees the numerical exactness of the inherent formulation and improves the numerical efficiency, especially under large spatial rotations.展开更多

This methodology uses a gamma distribution to model the material degradation, and the impact of imperfect maintenance actions on the system reliability is investigated. The state of a degrading system immediately after the imperfect maintenance action is assumed as a random variable and the maintenance time follows a geometric process. A maintenance policy (N) is applied by which the system will be repaired whenever it experiences Nth preventive maintenance (PM), and an optimal policy (N*) could be determined numerically or analytically for minimizing the long-run average cost per unit time. Finally, a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the use of this policy.展开更多

Such breakthrough was made possible because the method relies on a consistent comparative reference system to compare shapes, the latter which is computed using the Cartesian coordinates of homologous landmarks. It has been shown elsewhere that traditional comparative reference systems based on anatomy, and oriented in stereotyped postures, such as the Frankfurt plane at rest, the Lateral Semicircular Canal when the animal is in alert, or the cranial floor when the animal is flying, are all inconsistent for anatomical comparisons. They vary too much and unpredictably across species. An extraordinary example of the problems that can arise in descriptive and comparative anatomy when using such reference systems is the traditional interpretation of the head of the Woodcock. Anywhere in literature it is written that the eyes of this gamebird are oriented backwards to protect itself from predators. Here, using geometric morphometrics it is demonstrated that the woodcock's skull is highly transformed, yet following a normal trend among birds. In turn, using GM it is demonstrated that the collective wisdom about this oddity is simply the result of interpreting the anatomy of its skull using unreliable reference systems.展开更多

The Stability Geometrical Indicator for short times is calculated to locate regular and chaotic trajectories as the relative extrema of this indicator. Only trajectories with initial conditions at the boundary of the Hill’s region are considered to characterize the dynamics of the system. The importance of the curvature of this boundary for the stability of trajectories bouncing on it is also discussed.展开更多

The geometric approach has provided an elegant and rigorous framework to redefine some key concepts in modern control theory, such as controllability and observability. Moreover, those concepts can be extended to deal with systems in the presence of inaccessible disturbances, such as controlled invariants and conditioned invariants. It is shown in this paper that the augmented system of the ESO is unknown-state unknown-input completely reconstructable in finite time interval. A numerical simulation is given to verify the state vector and total disturbance can be estimated accurately by the ESO if the augmented system is unknown-state unknown-input completely reconstructable.展开更多
