Geological heritage inventory procedures and templates have been principally emerged from European countries. Each of these countries has developed its proper method of inventory based on its natural heritage, recognized on local and/or regional scales. Natural sites were mainly identified and characterized in a particular geological context, which is usually very unique, valuable and impressive;resulting in the protection of the sites. Madagascar is known internationally as a beautifully landscaped island, but the impressive sites were not cataloged. We carried out a series of field inventory of potential geological sites within the Isalo National Park in southern Madagascar. We invented several inventory sheets in order to record the most detailed information about the sites identified within the park. This is to aid in organizing the park and to establish a sustainable base for the creation of a geopark, and also they help us to build a database for geosites and their classifications. This article suggests a prototype model for inventorying intangible geosites, paleosites and geomorphosites. Our inventory sheets help to identify and to promote geological importance of any sites, not only for academia but also for other sectors such as tourism and conservation. 展开更多

One of the most distinguished sandstone geoheritage resources in the Khorat Plateau is Hin Chang Si located in the Nam Phong National Park, Khon Kaen Province. The clastic sedimentary rocks of the Phra Wihan Formation of the Khorat Group covered this area. As a result of the lithologic study, the Hin Chang Si consists of pebbly sandstone, moderately sorted medium- to coarse-grained sandstone, and a small amount of siltstone interbedded with laminated shale. The characteristics (colors, cementation, and degrees of weathering) divided sandstones into two groups, including white grain-supported sandstone with silica cement and matrix-supported sandstone with Fe-rich cement. In addition, these sandstones present primary sedimentary structures, which comprise tabular cross-bedding and normal grading as well as bioturbation. Hin Chang Si demonstrates many geomorphological features, including cliffs, potholes, rock pillars, polygonal cracks, caves, tafoni, runnels, and natural arches according to inventory. The weathering and degradation processes in humid tropical conditions are the main processes that caused these geomorphological features. Whereas many primary factors affected various types of morphology that are composed of joints, folds, and faults. The national park provides the natural trail map, tourism information, and biodiversity data to visitors;however, geological information about sandstone landforms should be actualized for geotourism development. 展开更多

Italy is characterized by widespread geomorphological instability, among which landslides leave impressive marks on the landscape.Nevertheless, landslide bodies may represent key sites for thematic and educational itineraries, especially in protected areas, where their management becomes an important issue. Our study focuses on the"Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve"(Central Apennines,Italy),where iconic landslides are present. Here, the"Scialimata Grande di Torre Alfina"landslide(SGTA)is listed in the regional Geosite database. This work aims to propose a multiscale procedure for landslide analysis,in terms of both hazard sources but also educational and geoheritage enhancement opportunities in natural reserves. After performing a Landslide Susceptibility conditional Analysis(LSA)for the reserve territory, attention was focused on the SGTA,to define properly its features and morphodynamics.A multi-disciplinary approach was adopted,by applying both remote sensing(UAV structure from motion,Photointerpretation)and field survey(geomorphological and GPS monitoring). From the LSA,based on drainage density, curvature, and slope triggering factors, the road and trail susceptibility maps were derived,as base tools for future risk assessments and trail paths management within the reserve. At the SGTA scale, the monitoring showed a displacement of up to 23 m during the time interval between 2015 and 2018.The landslide dynamics seem to be driven by alternating dry and extremely wet periods;moreover, leaks from the aqueduct in the detachment area and piping effects through clays may have also decreased the substrate cohesion. The SGTA complex influence on the Paglia River valley geometry was also hypothesized, underlining the action of landslide through different spatial scales(on-site and off-site)and on different environment features(sediment connectivity, hydrology). Finally, the SGTA appears highly representative of the geomorphic dynamics within the Nature Reserve(i.e.,scientific value)and it could be classified as an active geosite.Since the site was featured by a tourist trail, adequate management strategies must be adopted, considering the educational value and safety issues. 展开更多

The locality of Lara(Far-North Region,Cameroon)is made up of a pediplain strewn with coalescent plutons. The interaction of internal and external geological processes has contributed to transform the latter into inselbergs, whose geotouristic values are yet to be studied.Field and laboratory work enabled us to select the geomorphosites through their aesthetic value(particular size and shape)and, geomorphological and geological features. Moreover,it permitted to study and map the geomorphosites using Optic Microscope,Google Earth,GIS software and many other interfaces.Hence, four inselbergs have been selected and studied in the locality of Lara. The petrographic study of these inselbergs shows that granites are the main components of inselbergs and they present a fine to coarse-grained texture, materialized by quartz, micas, plagioclases and alkali feldspars(white and pink in colour).Inselbergs exhibit vertical and parallel networks of diaclases giving them a stratified appearance in some flanks. In addition,on some inselberg limbs and piedmonts, are built tors which contribute to their beauty. The tops of inselbergs, are embellished by several alluring pedestal rocks. On their flanks, shelters of various shapes and sizes(about 12 m length)have developed through the heaps of blocks field.Among the ten shelters selected, some have a fairly high cultural value as they are sacred places for the local population. Moreover,Lara's granitic inselbergs include enclaves(cognate enclaves and xenocrysts)that also significantly improve their geoheritage value.Inselbergs are landforms with high education and aesthetic value that attracted a larger local and foreign population of about 863 visitors between 2017-2019.They constitute an exceptional geoheritage that could attract more tourists in the locality of Lara;but the promotion of geotourism is needed through interpretative panels, marketing of geomorphosites through leaflets, web, media, and geotours,to mention a few. 展开更多

This paper is focused on discussing the case of Las Loras UNESCO Global Geopark,in Spain,as an example to show the contribution of Geoparks to the dissemination of science and the relevance of preserving geoheritage by implementing simple measures based on communication and prevention.Natural and anthropic hazards derived from climate change are endangering heritage and the well-ness of the society.Geoheritage is vulnerable.Nowadays we are witnessing the destruction of monuments with high emotional significance due to wars, but climate change is also contributing to the loss of the same cultural heritage.Prevention is often the best way to protect geoheritage from disappearing and society is the best agent to implement preventive measures.Citizens are often unaware of the important treasures they have around them.Geoparks have been a great tool to bring awareness in society, since by involving the public in the whole process of recognition and promotion, they protect the space and the cultural and economic values associated with them.It is important to communicate the initiatives taking place in the Geoparks to explain the importance of geology and the risk of losing the geoheritage if natural hazards increase.Las Loras study is a good practice to implement in other Geoparks. 展开更多
