Objective:To investigate the potential of Musa x paradisiaca(M.x paradisiaca)flower extracts in promoting milk production of lactating rats and its effects on growth of the suckling pups. Methods:Galactagogue activity was evaluated in terms of quantity of milk produced from the rats treated with petroleum ether, ethanol or water extracts of the flower.Lactating rats(n=5) of Spraque Dawley with six pups each were administered with the extracts in the amount of 500 mg/kg body weight, while the control rats were given an equivalent amount of distilled water. The rats were daily administered via oral feeding starting from Day 5 until Day 14 and the performance of milk production was measured along the experimental period by weight-suckle-weight method. Results were statistically analyzed using SPSS by means of ANOVA at 0.05 and was expressed as their mean±standard deviation. The rates of pups’ growth were measured as the weight gain along the experimental period. Results:The rats treated with aqueous extract produced higher milk than control and ethanol groups.Aqueous extract was identified to increase milk production by 25%,while petroleum ether extract by 18%.The mean of yields produced by the rats during suckling period for aqueous, petroleum ether, ethanol and control were 4.62±2.45,4.37±1.93,3.65±1.89 and 3.69±1.79,respectively.Growth rates of pups for the rats treated with control, aqueous, ethanol extract and petroleum ether were(1.85±0.49),(1.78±0.56),(1.65±0.46)and(1.56±0.42) g/pup, respectively. Conclusions:The present study reveals the potential of M.x paradisiaca flower to enhance milk production of nursing mothers which could be exploited for commercialization of the isolated extract. 展开更多

Background: Populations of Gontougo (C?te d’Ivoire) commonly used Euphorbia hirta (Euphorbiaceae) leaves as galactagogue to boost milk production in lactating women. Our study was carried to verify this traditional belief via evaluations of milk production, serum prolactin levels, body weight and mammary lobuloalveolar proliferation induced by the aqueous leaf extract of this medicinal plant in Wistar rats. Methods: 6 groups of 6 virgin rats and 6 groups of 6 lactating rats were used. Each lactating rat was isolated with its six pups. These groups of animals were treated orally with distilled water, Metoclopramide (Metocl 5 mg/kg) and E. hirta aqueous leaf extract (EHae 100, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg) daily during 17 days of lactation. The indirect method which assimilates the weight gain of untreated pups to the quantity of milk produced by lactating rats was used. At the end of the treatment, histological sections of the abdominal mammary glands of lactating rats were observed. Results: EHae administration induced an increase of milk production in lactating rats. This action of EHae was stronger at the dose of 200 mg/kg. Milk production of the treated rats at a dose of 200 mg/kg was 118.14 ± 1 g. The quantity of milk produced by the control female rats was 83.83 ± 0.88 g. Compared with the control, EHae 200 mg/kg significantly increased milk production (40.92%) (P Conclusion: EHae showed a galactagogue activity illustrated by increases of milk production, PRL secretions and the development of the lobuloalveolar system of the mammary glands in treated female rats. This galactagogue property could partly justify the traditional use of this plant to boost milk production in lactating women. 展开更多

This research was aimed to evaluate the total antioxidant status(TAS)and the total oxidant status(TOS)of galactagogues and herbal teas.Galactagogues and herbal teas used for other purposes were sold in the market for breastfeeding mothers and babies.Tea infusions were prepared by following brewing recipe on the package.TAS(mmol/L)and TOS(mol/L)were measured and oxidative stress indices(OSI)were calculated.TAS values of the mixed-herbal teas in granule form that sold as still tea were found to be higher((1.5±0.00)–(1.7±0.14)mmol/L)compared to other galactagogue tea types(P<0.05).TAS value of the mixed-herbal tea in classic tea bag was(1.0±0.06)mmol/L while the TAS value of the vitamin added mixed-herbal tea was(3.0±0.00)mmol/L(P<0.05).The TAS and TOS values of the night-teas were simultaneously found to be higher compared to herbal teas(P<0.05).Besides,the highest OSI values among herbal teas was chamomile tea(6.96).In conclusion,antioxidant/oxidant status of galactagogues and other herbal teas might vary according to their form(powder or granule),type, variety of herbs in the composition, and the brand. Moreover, some galactagogues and other herbal teas have high levels of oxidant activity as well as antioxidant activity. Also,it seems that vitamin addition is important for balancing antioxidant/oxidant status of all tea types. 展开更多

OBJECTIVES:The days and weeks following childbirth, the postpartum period,is a critical phase in the lives of mothers and newborn babies due to risk of postpartum complications associated with mother.Ethnomedicinal plants have been used judiciously during pregnancy to assist childbirth and for postpartum care in various ethnic communities around the world. They are extensively used for prophylaxis and management of postpartum complications in the Jodhpur District of Rajasthan,India. The aim of this study was to document use of such ethnomedicinal plants.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Survey was conducted to document the use of ethnomedicinal plants. The selected plants were searched for reports on their pharmacological activities on Scopus and Google scholar RESULTS:Use of eighteen ethnomedicinal plants was documented for the prophylaxis and management of postpartum complications from local community.CONCLUSIONS:Zingiber officinale,Asparagus racemosus,Trapa natans,Acacia senegal,Trachyspermum ammi,Piper longum, and Symplocos racemosa possessing galactagogue, uterine tonic, diuretic, antiemetic, and wound healing activity were found to be most commonly used ethnomedicinal plants. 展开更多
