Second Language Learners' Intuitions of Grammaticality

The cornerstone and the single most fundamental change in perspective on the nature of language and language learning is, perhaps, the focus on learners as active creators in their learning process, not as passive recipients. The study aims at investigating some second language learners' meta-linguistic ability in solving multidimensional grammatical problems. The subjects of the present study were 40 Egyptian students who were in their fourth year of academic study in the Department of English and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Menufia University, Egypt. The instrument of this study consisted of pre-test, post-test and individual interviews. Two tasks were used: (1) "Sentence Completion" task; and (2) "Error Recognition and Correction" task. Finally, students were interviewed to explain and comment on their performance in the previous tasks. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. A Study on C-E Translation of Nominalization in News Discourse from Grammatical Metaphor Perspective

Nominalization,as the main means of reaching grammatical metaphor,is one of the distinctive features of written corpora and plays an important role in the discourse construction of news discourse.Based on the theory of grammatical metaphor,this article discusses the phenomenon of nominalization and its translation strategies in news discourse by analyzing translation examples.It is found that nominalization structure can effectively enhance the informativeness and objectivity of news discourse.When translating from Chinese to English,the translator should take into full consideration of the different characteristics of the two languages,and convert the predicates,subject-predicate structures,verb-object structures and clauses into nominalization structures.Through this translation strategy,the translation will be more in line with the English language characteristics and usage habits,and can accurately convey the information of the original text,finally realizing the effective translation of the language. 展开更多

Teachers' instructional discourse, a sub-category of teachers' discourse, is the medium that teachers use to achieve the teaching and learning goals It is not only the means for teachers to organize teaching activities, but is also taken as the model language by students. This paper examines teachers' instructional discourse by focusing on its discoursal features. Drawing on the theories and methods in discourse analysis, four categories of discoursal features in teachers' instructional discourse are proposed. They are communicativeness, authenticity, coherence, and grammaticality and appropriateness. The four discoursal features will provide a framework for analyzing teachers' instructional discourse in the language classroom 展开更多

The Comparative Study of Metaphors -- From Cognitive and Systemic-Functional Perspectives

Metaphors have different expressions in cognitive and systematic-functional linguistics, which are conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. Conceptual metaphors belong to traditional vocabulary metaphors, and ideational grammatical metaphors are pointed out by Halliday--the main representative of systemic-functional theory. This paper elaborates on the specific grammatical feature of EST (English for Science and Technology) text--"nominalization of processes" to reveal the source of ideational metaphors. From the analysis of some examples, it is found that nominalization as a grammatical metaphor expresses the transference between process types, so it reveals the essence of ideational grammatical metaphors. Meanwhile, the comparison made between grammatical metaphors and vocabulary metaphors reflects the similarities between conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. In this way, this paper comes to the conclusion that the combination of the study methods of metaphors from both cognitive and systemic-functional perspectives is the best way to uncover the basic characteristic of human thinking. 展开更多
