Food packaging is becoming popular as the consumption of ready-to-eat food products rises.Easyto-use,non-biodegradable plastic packaging is commonly used in food packaging,contributing to the deteriorating environmental situation.This issue increases the concern for the environment and encourages the usage of alternative materials.Cellulose nanofibrils(CNF)are abundant and biodegradable,which makes them ideal candidates to replace plastic coatings.The ability to form H-bonds between the hydroxyl groups makes coated paper with CNF have good strength,but poor barrier properties.The barrier properties can be improved by grafting DMAEMA or HEMA onto CNF(CNF-g-PDMAEMA and CNF-g-PHEMA,respectively).Thus,the objective of this study was to modify CNF chemically to enhance the barrier properties of the food packaging paper.It was found that paper coated with CNFg-PDMAEMA and CNF-g-PHEMA exhibited improvements in mechanical and barrier properties while maintaining the desired viscosity for the coating process.The water contact angle increased for paper coated with CNF-g-PHEMA and CNF-g-PDMAEMA,reaching a maximum of 97.51°and 92.58°,respectively with the decreasing Cobb_(60) values by 49% and 11%.The oil absorption was also reduced for both coated papers compared to the blank paper.Mechanical properties improved,as indicated by a 3% increase in tensile strength for paper coated with CNF-g-PHEMA and a 5% for paper coated with CNF-g-PDMAEMA.The results indicated significant potential for the application of modified CNF in coatings for food packaging paper.Noteworthy,the grafting process should be improved to enhance the mechanical and barrier properties of the coated paper. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Postoperative complications such as atrial fibrillation and pericardial effusion are frequent after coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG),contributing to increased morbidity and prolonged hospital stays.Posterior pericardiotomy(PP),a surgical technique involving incision of the posterior pericardium to allow drainage,has been suggested as a preventive measure.However,its overall efficacy and safety profile,including potential risks like pleural effusion,require comprehensive evaluation amid varying study qualities.We hypothesized that PP reduces key post-CABG complications compared to standard care.AIM To determine the efficacy of PP in reducing postoperative complications following CABG.METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis included randomized controlled trials(RCTs)from PubMed,Cochrane,ClinicalTrials.gov,and Ovid,comparing PP vs no PP in adult CABG patients.Studies were conducted in tertiary care hospital settings.Twenty RCTs with 5331 participants were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria.The intervention involved intraoperative PP.Primary outcome was postoperative atrial fibrillation(POAF);secondary outcomes included effusions,tamponade,hospital/intensive care unit stay,and bleeding revisions.Risk ratios(RRs),mean differences,and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)were calculated using random-effects models;heterogeneity assessed via I^(2) statistic.RESULTS Twenty RCTs analyzed 5331 patients(2665 with PP vs 2666 without).PP significantly lowered POAF(10%vs 21%;RR=0.48,95%CI:0.36-0.65,P<0.00001;I^(2)=70%),cardiac tamponade(0.5%vs 3%;RR=0.16,95%CI:0.08-0.34,P<0.00001;I^(2)=0%),early pericardial effusion(2%vs 6%;RR=0.31,95%CI:0.14-0.68,P=0.004;I^(2)=96%),and late pericardial effusion(1%vs 9%;RR=0.11,95%CI:0.05-0.21,P<0.00001;I^(2)=0%).Hospital stay decreased(mean difference=-1.23 days,95%CI:-1.87 to-0.59,P=0.0002;I^(2)=85%).Pleural effusion risk increased(25%vs 17%;RR=1.46,95%CI:1.21-1.76,P<0.0001;I^(2)=0%).No significant effects on mortality(RR=0.92,95%CI:0.48-1.76,P=0.80;I^(2)=0%),intensive care unit stay,or bleeding revisions.CONCLUSION PP effectively reduces POAF,pericardial effusions,tamponade,and hospital stay in CABG patients,though it increases pleural effusion risk and shows heterogeneity in some outcomes. 展开更多

Association between estimated plasma volume status and acute kidney injury in adult patients after coronary artery bypass grafting

Background Acute kidney injury(AKI)is a common and serious complication following coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG),with an incidence rate ranging from 4%to 28%.The estimated plasma volume status(ePVS)-a novel marker calculated from routine hematocrit and hemoglobin levels-reflects both volume overload and hemodilution,which are potential contributors to renal impairment.Nevertheless,the relationship between ePVS and AKI in patients undergoing CABG remains poorly understood.Therefore,this study aimed to investigate the association of ePVS with the risk of AKI in adult patients who underwent CABG.Methods This retrospective cohort study utilized data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care(MIMIC)-IV database,covering the period from 2008 to 2019.The primary outcome was the occurrence of AKI following admission to the intensive care unit(ICU).Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels were measured within 24 hours after ICU admission.The ePVS was calculated using the Strauss-derived Duarte formula:ePVS=[100-hematocrit(%)]/hemoglobin(g/dL).AKI was defined in accordance with the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes(KDIGO)criteria.Multivariable logistic regression models were used to adjust for demographics,comorbidities,and critical laboratory markers.Patients were stratified into three groups based on the ePVS tertiles(low:≤6.30;middle:6.30-8.08;high:>8.08).Multivariate logistic regression and subgroup analyses were applied to explore the association of the ePVS with the risk of AKI.Furthermore,we also examined the association of ePVS with AKI by employing generalized additive models.Results A total of 3,388 patients were included in the final analysis,of whom 2,573(75.94%)developed AKI.Following multivariable adjustment,each unit increase in ePVS was associated with a 9%increase in the odds of AKI(OR:1.09,95%CI:1.05-1.14;P<0.001).When analyzed by ePVS tertiles,the highest tertile demonstrated a significantly elevated AKI risk compared with the lowest tertile(OR:1.48,95%CI:1.18-1.86,P=0.0007),with a significant dose-response relationship observed across tertiles(P for trend<0.001).Subgroup analyses further indicated that the association between ePVS and AKI was more pronounced among patients with pre-existing renal or peripheral vascular disease and was statistically significant only in White patients.Conclusions ePVS was independently associated with an increased risk of AKI in adults undergoing CABG.These findings supported the potential utility of ePVS as a simple,economical clinical tool for early identification of patients at high risk for AKI following cardiac surgery. 展开更多

Background Acute kidney injury(AKl)is a common and serious complication following coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG),with reported incidence rates ranging from 4%to 28%.Red cell distribution width(RDW),calculated as the standard deviation of erythrocyte size divided by mean corpuscular volume,reflects the heterogeneity in red blood cell volume.Easily obtained from routine blood tests,RDW is increasingly recognized as a prognostic marker for various adverse clinical outcomes.Previous studies have also indicated a correlation between elevated RDW levels and declining renal function,as measured by estimated glomerular filtration rate.However,the specific relationship between RDW and the risk of AKI in patients undergoing CABG remains inadequately characterized.This study aimed to investigate the association between RDW and AKI incidence in this surgical population.Methods I n this secondary retrospective cohort study,data of patients who underwent CABG were extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care(MIMIC)-IV database(2008-2019).The primary outcome was the occurrence of AKI as a postoperative complication following CABG,which was identified after intensive care unit(ICU)admission.RDW was measured within 24 hours on admission to ICU.AKI was defined according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes(KDIGO)criteria.Multivariable logistic regression models were used to adjust for demographics,comorbidities,and critical laboratory markers.Patients were stratified into RDW tertiles(T1:≤13.1%;T2:13.1%-13.8%;T3:≥13.8%).Multivariate logistic regression and subgroup analyses were applied to explore the association of the RDW with the risk of AKI.Furthermore,we also examined the association of RDW with AKI by employing restricted cubic splines(RCS).Results A total of 3,388 patients who underwent CABG were included in this study,of whom 2563(75.65%)had AKI.According to the multivariate regression models,the RDW demonstrated a significant positive correlation with the risk of AKI after comprehensive covariate adjustment.When each unit of RDW was increased,the risk of AKI in patients with CABG increased 10%(OR:1.10,95%CI:1.03-1.18,P=0.0063).In addition,When the RDW was analyzed by tertiles,patients in the high tertile(OR:1.33,95%CI:1.08-1.64,P=0.0072)presented a progressively higher risk of AKI than those in the low tertile,with a significant dose-response trend(P for trend<0.01).The subgroup analysis demonstrated that the positive association between elevated RDW and increased risk of AKI following CABG was robust and consistent across most major patient subgroups defined by demographics and comorbidities.The strength of this association was notably amplified in patients with pre-existing renal disease and in older patients(>65 years)and White race(P<0.05),suggesting a particularly prominent relationship between RDW and AKI risk in these specific populations.The lack of statistical significance in peripheral vascular disease subgroups required further investigation(P>0.05).Conclusions In ICU patients who received coronary revascularization by CABG,an elevated RDW demonstrated an positive correlation with the risk of AKI.[S Chin J Cardiol 2025;26(4):228238] 展开更多

BACKGROUND Coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG)and percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI)are well-established treatments for multivessel coronary artery disease(CAD),a condition where multiple heart arteries are narrowed.A newer approach,fractional flow reserve(FFR)-guided PCI,uses a specialized measurement to select which artery blockages to treat,aiming to enhance patient outcomes.Despite its adoption,the comparative effectiveness of FFR-guided PCI vs CABG remains unclear,particularly regarding key health outcomes such as survival,heart-related complications,and the need for further procedures.AIM To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of FFR-guided PCI compared to CABG in patients with multivessel CAD.METHODS This meta-analysis followed standard reporting guidelines and included randomized controlled trials(RCTs)comparing FFR-guided PCI with CABG in patients with multivessel CAD.We searched medical databases,including PubMed,EMBASE,ScienceDirect,and ClinicalTrials.gov,from their start to May 2025.We calculated combined risk ratios(RRs)with 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs)to analyze the data.RESULTS Three RCTs were analyzed.There was no notable difference in all-cause mortality between FFR-guided PCI and CABG(RR=1.01,95%CI:0.78-1.31,P=0.93).However,FFR-guided PCI showed higher rates of major adverse cardiac events(MACEs;RR=1.30,95%CI:1.11-1.52,P=0.001),myocardial infarction(RR=1.49,95%CI:1.11-2.01,P=0.009),and repeat revascularization(RR=2.25,95%CI:1.78-2.85,P<0.00001).Stroke rates were comparable between the two treatments(RR=0.80,95%CI:0.54-1.20,P=0.28).CONCLUSION FFR-guided PCI and CABG have similar rates of all-cause mortality and stroke in patients with multivessel CAD.However,CABG results in fewer MACEs,myocardial infarctions,and repeat procedures. 展开更多

Kataveni et al’s meta-analysis offers an important contemporary synthesis of randomized evidence comparing fractional flow reserve-guided percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG)in multivessel coronary artery disease(CAD).The pooled analysis found no significant difference in all-cause mortality or stroke,yet CABG was superior in reducing myocardial infarction,major adverse cardiac events,and repeat revascularization.These results confirm CABG’s durability even in the era of physiological lesion assessment and second-generation drug-eluting stents.From a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)perspective,multivessel CAD corresponds to syndromes such as“heart vessel obstruction”and“Qi and blood stagnation”,in which local blockage is compounded by systemic imbalance.While revascularization addresses the structural impediment to blood flow,TCM approaches,including herbal medicine,acupuncture,and lifestyle therapy,aim to improve microcirculation,reduce inflammation,and support recovery,potentially mitigating recurrent ischemic events.This commentary argues that future research should integrate optimal revascularization strategies with rigorously evaluated TCM interventions to address both the anatomical and systemic dimensions of CAD and improve long-term patient outcomes. 展开更多

The effect of maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene- buty-lene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS-g-MAH) and in-situ grafting MAH on mechanical, dynamic mechanical properties of wood flour/recycled plastic blends composites was investigated. Recycled plastic polypro-pylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS), were mixed with wood flour in a high speed blender and then extruded by a twin/single screw tandem extruder system to form wood flour/recycled plastic blends composites. Results show that the impact properties of the composites were improved more significantly by using SEBS-g-MAH compatibilizer than by using the mixtures of MAH and DCP via reactive blending in situ. However, contrary results were ob-served on the tensile and flexural properties of the corresponding com-posites. In General, the mechanical properties of composites made from recycled plastic blends were inferior to those made from virgin plastic blends, especially in elongation break. The morphological study verified that the interfacial adhesion or the compatibility of plastic blends with wood flour was improved by adding SEBS-g-MAH or in-situ grafting MAH. A better interfacial bonding between PP, HDPE, PS and wood flour was obtained by in-situ grafting MAH than the addition of SEBS-g-MAH. In-situ grafting MAH can be considered as a potential way of increasing the interfacial compatibility between plastic blends and wood flour. The storage modulus and damping factor of composites were also characterized through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). 展开更多

Electron beam accelerator was used as irradiation source. The effect of ferrous sulfate, sodium nitrate, methanol and glucose on the degree of grafting was demonstrated. The function of the different additives was compared by the grafting of different monomers (AAc and AAm). The results show that the four of these additives are elective on the grafting of AAc. [Objective] This study was conducted to change the situation of high cost in walnut grafting by reducing seedling cost through technical means.[Method] Effects of different rootstock processing methods and rootstock pruning time on walnut growth and cost were studied by the square bud grafting method.[Result] The survival rate and cost under stumping were higher than those under no stumping,and the proportion of grafting-capable rootstocks under stumping was lower than that under no stumping by 9%.The cost differences between different rootstock time were remarkable.The cost for the stock pruning 15 d after grafting was 5 times as much as 1 d after grafting.[Conclusion] Direct grafting could achieve the effect of easy and convenient management,and the overall cost was lower though the survival rate was reduced to a limited extent.Sooner rootstock pruning resulted in a better effect.Pruning the rootstocks within 5 d after grafting not only could improve the quality of seedlings,but also could reduce the cost for seedling management. 展开更多

Branch length and density have critical effects on membrane performances; however, it is regarded to be traditionally difficult to investigate the relationship due to the uncontrolled membrane modification methods. In this study, zwitterionic polymer with controlled grafting branch chain length(degree of polymerization) and grafting density(grafting chains per membrane area) was tethered to the microporous polypropylene membrane surface based on the combination of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) polymerization technique with click reaction. The modified membranes were tested by filtrating protein dispersion to highlight the correlations of branch chain length and grafting density with the membrane permeation performances. The pure water flux, the flux recovery ratio are positively and significantly, and the irreversible fouling negatively and significantly correlated with grafting density. These results demonstrate that the larger the coverage of the membrane with poly{[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide}(PMEDSAH), the higher the pure water flux and the higher the flux recover ratio, and the lower the irreversible fouling, which shows that high grafting density is favorable to fouling reducing. 展开更多

Molecules adsorbed or attached on a surface is a quite basic phenomenon in numerous chemical or biological systems.Grafting-onto is considered as a feasible way to achieve it.The grafting reaction is essentially controlled by the diffusion of the molecules,thus it is more likely a physical issue,instead of a chemical issue.Because of the experimental difficulty in measuring the properties of surface-attached molecules(e.g.,the polymeric molecules),the surface-bound molecules are often assumed as with the same properties as that of the start feeding ones in solution.This assumption was even used to guide further characterization,while it is proved to be invalid by different quantifying methods.Consequently,an effective prediction for the properties of surface-bound molecules is still lacking.Based on a microscopic level and a dynamic perspective,the grafting process onto a flat substrate with polydisperse feeding polymeric molecules is investigated in-depth by coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulation as well as model analysis.We find from simulations that for the final grafting densityσ_(g)and the mean chain length of start feeding molecules<N_(0)>,the dependence ofσ_(g)-<N_(0)>^(γ)with the constant exponential factorγmay be a determined rule for one-end functionalized flexible linear polymer chains grafting on the flat substrate.Since grafting-onto is a multiple interplayed process,our simulation study indicates that there is an optimized initial concentration of start feeding molecules for achieving high grafting density of surface-bound polymers.We also propose a correctional equation to quantitatively predict the molecular weight distribution(MWD)of surface-bound polymeric molecules,which may be effective for predicting the MWD of the surface-bound ones in specific conditions.This simulation study helps to better understand the kinetics of grafting-onto process,and serves as a theoretical guide to achieve the precise design of surface modification materials via grafting-onto strategy. 展开更多

[Method] Through the comparative analysis, the survival rate, new germi-nation and yield characteristics of the cutting stems with different heights by stem grafting and bark grafting. [Result] The best cutting stem height of cashew should be in 100-150 cm, when the number of new germinated shoots was 85.5-87.7. Stem grafting could significantly improve the survival rate of the shooting branch (92.7%), growth condition of which was better than that of bark grafting, and it also had no clip cortex. The yield of stem grafting was significantly higher than that of bark grafting, and it could reach up to 18.1 kg/plant in 4 years. The branches from stem grafting had significantly better ability in resisting the wind damage than those from bark grafting. [Conclusion] The study provided references for the crown grafting of cashew planting in China. 展开更多

The simultaneous γ-ray-radiation-induced grafting polymerization of acrylic acid on ex- panded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) film was investigated. It was found that the degree of grafting (DG) of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) can be controlled by the monomer concentration, absorbed dose, and dose rate under an optimal inhibitor concentration of [Fe2+]=18 mmol/L. SEM observation showed that the macroporous structure in ePTFE films would be covered gradually with the increase of the DG of PAA. The prepared ePTFE-g-PAA film was im- mersed in a neutral silver nitrate solution to fabricate an ePTFE-g-PAA/Ag hybrid film after the addition of NaBH4 as a reduction agent of Ag+ to Ag atom. SEM, XRD, and XPS results proved that Ag nanoparticles with a size of several tens of nanometers to 100 nanometers were in situ immobilized on ePTFE film. The loading capacity of Ag nanoparticles could be tuned by the DG of PAA, and determined by thermal gravimetric analysis. The quart- titative antibacterial activity of the obtained ePTFE-g-PAA/Ag hybrid films was measured using counting plate method. It can kill all the Escherichia coli in the suspension in 1 h. Moreover, this excellent antibacterial activity can last at least for 4 h. This work provides a facile and practical way to make ePTFE meet the demanding antimicrobial requirement in more and more practical application areas. 展开更多

An amidoxime-based polymeric adsorbent was prepared by pre-irradiation grafting of acrylonitrile and acrylic acid onto high-density polyethylene fibers using electron beams,followed by amidoximation.Quantitative recovery of uranium was investigated by flow-through experiment using simulated seawater and marine test in natural seawater.The maximum amount of uranium uptake was 2.51 mg/g-ads after 42 days of contact with simulated seawater and 0.13 mg/g-ads for 15 days of contact with natural seawater.A lower uranium uptake in marine test can be attributed to the short adsorption time and the contamination of marine microorganisms and iron.However,the high selectivity toward uranium against vanadium may be beneficial to harvest uranyl ion onto adsorbents and the economic feasibility for recovery of uranium from seawater. 展开更多
