The stress-dilatancy relation is important for understanding fault mechanics and brittle deformation of rocks, and hence the onset of frictional instability. The principle of minimum energy ratio was proposed by Rowe, and this Rowe’s theory has been applied to deformation of granular materials.Rowe suggested that the energy ratio, which is the ratio of the energy dissipation rate to energy supply rate, would be a minimum and constant value. The relation between the rate of dilatancy and the maximum stress ratio can be extended to the case of a random assembly of irregular particles whereby the rate of internal work absorbed in frictional heat is a minimum as the mass dilates.According to Rowe’s law. 展开更多

In order to solve fretting instability problem of gear shaft shoulder due to torsional vibration in mechanical system, the mathematical model of fretting instability vibration of gear shaft shoulder was established by adopting the method of combining kinematics and tribology, and the numerical analysis was applied to the fretting instability mechanism of gear shaft shoulder by introducing the friction instability damping ratio. The numerical results show that the main factors causing the unstable and vibrating gear shaft shoulder are the large tightening torque and too large static friction coefficient. The reasonable values of the static friction coefficient, the amount of interference and tightening torque can effectively mitigate the fretting instability phenomenon of gear shaft shoulder. The experimental results verify that damping plays a significant role in eliminating the vibration of gear shaft control system. 展开更多

From a nonlinear quasi-geostrophic barotropic vorticity equation including frictional dissipation, thermal driving and large topography used by Charney in investigation of the multiple flow equilibria and blocking, using the Serrin-Joseph energy method and the variational principle, we found the nonlinear barotropic stability criteria of the zonal basic flow with the total energy, total enstrophy and their linear combination respectively, and compared the criteria with Charney's results. 展开更多

In this paper, the simultaneous effects of boundary layer and topography on the instability of Eady wave are investigated by using a new parameterization of the vertical velocity at the top of PBL and the influences of the stratification of the PBL,roughness and the slope of terrain are shown.Furthermore, the effects of the boundary layer friction and topography on generalized Eady wave are also investigated. 展开更多
