A nonlinearity-compensation-free optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR)scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on the electrically-controlled optical frequency sweep.In the proposed scheme,the linear frequency sweep light is generated by propagating an ultra-narrow-linewidth continuous-wave(CW)light through an electro-optic frequency shifter which consists of a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator(DPMZM)and an electronic 90°hybrid,where the electro-optic frequency shifter is driven by a linear frequency modulated signal generated by a direct digital synthesizer(DDS).Experimental results show that the spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of the proposed OFDR scheme without the nonlinear phase compensation are comparable to those of OFDR employing a commercial tunable laser source(TLS),an auxiliary interferometer,and a software-based nonlinear phase compensation method.The proposed OFDR scheme is helpful to reduce the complexity of the optical structure and eliminate the difficulty of developing the nonlinear phase compensation algorithm. 展开更多

We propose a method for reconstructing the distributed forward state of polarization(SOP)in single-mode fibers(SMFs)to solve the problem of an unpredictable blind box of SOP evolution in many applications such as fiber-optic parametric amplification systems.Using polarization-sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry(POFDR)and a quaternion-based model to describe polarization changes,our approach achieves high spatial resolution and precision.By an improved iterative fitting algorithm,the mean square error(MSE)of forward SOP reconstruction for approximately 100 consecutive measurement points was reduced to below 0.1%.This method enables visualization of SOP dynamics along the fiber,offering critical insights for polarization-dependent systems. 展开更多

A novel method of measuring non-uniform strain along a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) using optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This method can overcome the problems of traditional non-uniform strain measurement methods for FBGs, i.e., the likelihood of chirping and multiple peaking in the spectrum when FBG is subjected to inhomogeneous strain fields. Wavelength interrogation is realized by OFDR with a narrow-line-width tunable laser as the optical source. When non-uniform strain distributions along areas adjacent to structural damage are measured by this method, good agreement is obtained between measurements and theoretical simulation results. 展开更多

竖向隆升屈曲是埋地管道失稳破坏的主要形式之一,对管道运输安全构成了严重的威胁。目前,相关研究多聚焦于平坦场地条件下的管道隆升屈曲行为,而对于斜坡场地条件下管道隆升破坏机制的关注较少。基于分布式光纤感测和粒子图像测速技术,... 竖向隆升屈曲是埋地管道失稳破坏的主要形式之一,对管道运输安全构成了严重的威胁。目前,相关研究多聚焦于平坦场地条件下的管道隆升屈曲行为,而对于斜坡场地条件下管道隆升破坏机制的关注较少。基于分布式光纤感测和粒子图像测速技术,开展了斜坡埋地管道隆升破坏的模型试验研究,系统分析了不同坡角与埋深率条件下土体变形破坏机制及管道隆升土抗力的发挥机制。研究结果表明:(1)随着坡角的增大,管道隆升过程中土抗力峰值逐渐减小;而随着埋深率的增大,峰值土抗力和残余土抗力显著增加;(2)在不同坡角与埋深率条件下,管道隆升土抗力达到残余值时的管道位移量约为0.2D(D为管道外直径);(3)管道隆升过程中,横截面呈现“椭圆化”变形,管道上方土体形成楔形破坏体。在此基础上,结合应力莫尔圆理论,提出了一种适用于斜坡场地条件下管道隆升峰值土抗力的计算方法。相关结论有助于揭示斜坡地形下埋地管道及周围土体的变形破坏机制,可为复杂地形条件下管道结构的设计与安全评估提供理论支持与工程参考。 展开更多

Presented here is long-range distributed vibration sensing based on internal-modulation optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR).In the proposed system with internal modulation,a silicon-based photonic-chip laser is used as the laser source,and by controlling the output voltage curve of an arbitrary waveform generator to induce temperature change in the external cavity of the laser,a 10-GHz optical frequency tuning range is achieved.The complexity of the proposed internal-modulation system is lower than that of the traditional external-modulation OFDR system that combines a narrow-linewidth laser with a single-sideband modulator to achieve wavelength tuning.Cross-correlation analysis is used as a sensing mechanism to evaluate the similarity between Rayleigh scatter signals and to achieve vibration event localization.Experimental comparison is made of the vibration sensing performance of the external-and internal-modulation systems,and for a vibration event generated at a distance of 100.95 km,they locate it with a sensing spatial resolution of 43.0 m and 16.8 m,respectively.The results indicates that the proposed distributed vibration sensing based on internal modulation has better sensing performance and lower complexity compared to the traditional external-modulation system.In addition,the proposed system is single-ended and involves no optical amplification,which makes it very suitable for ultra-long-range sensing. 展开更多

Weak signal detection for single-mode fiber-optic distributed temperature sensor (DTS) is a key technology to achieve better performance. A hybrid technique combining the incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (IOFDR) and the three-channel simultaneous radio-frequency (RF) lock-in amplifier (LIA) is presented to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the measured spontaneous Raman backscattered light. The field programmable gate array (FPGA) based RF-LIA is designed with a novel and simple structure. The measurement frequency range is achieved from 1 kHz to 100 MHz. Experimental results show that the backscattered light signal of picowatt level can be detected with high SNR. With a 2.5kin single-mode fiber, a 1064nm laser source, and the measurement time of 500 s, this sensing system can reach a spatial resolution of 0.93 m and a temperature resolution of about 0.2℃. 展开更多

Drought-induced desiccation cracking can trigger several weakening mechanisms in surface soils,potentially precipitating instability and failure of slopes and earthen structures.To investigate the potential application of distributed fibre optical sensing(DFOS)based on optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR)technology in characterizing the twodimensional(2D)desiccation cracking processes of surface soils,a comprehensive test device is utilized to conduct soil evaporation tests,continuously record water content changes,desiccation cracking evolution,and FO sensing strain status.A deep learning-based quantitative analysis method is employed to meticulously examine the relationship between 2D cracking geometric parameters and strain status.The comprehensive analysis not only reveals the mutual feedback response mechanism between the strain status and the soil evaporation-shrinkage-cracking processes,but also clarifies the early detection distance of OFDR technology for 2D desiccation cracking.Specifically,OFDR technology can detect the propagation of horizontal desiccation cracks up to 23 mm in advance with a strain measurement accuracy of 1με.To address the spatial continuity issue in OFDR sensing strain data,an innovative high-resolution characterization framework is proposed by combining the finite element method(FEM)and OFDR technology,referred to as the FEM-OFDR framework.Comparative results indicate that the proposed FEM significantly surpasses both the kriging and radial basis function(RBF)methods in inferring missing OFDR sensing strain data.Notably,during the drying process,reaching a critical water content causes the local decoupling between the uncracked clods and the substrate,resulting in a decreasing trend in the sensing strain at the crack position.This study provides crucial technical means and theoretical support for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms driving 2D desiccation-induced shrinkage and cracking in surface soils. 展开更多

The suppression of polarization cross talk in lead zirconate titanate phase modulators as a key error source has been challenging for open-loop fiber optic gyroscopes(FOGs).We developed a polarization-diversity optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR)to measure the distributed modulation polarization error in the modulator.The error contributes 8×10^(−6) rad to FOG’s bias instability.Using a UV-fabricated in-fiberλ/4 wave plate and polarization-mode converter with fiber taper technology,the modulation error has been suppressed by 15 dB in assembled FOGs.This approach reduced error with temperature from 25°/h to 0.7°/h,meeting the requirements of control-level gyroscopes with bias errors less than 1°/h. 展开更多
