A method which adopts the combination of least squares support vector machine(LS-SVM) and Monte Carlo(MC) simulation is used to calculate the foundation settlement reliability. When using LS-SVM,choosing the training dataset and the values for LS-SVM parameters is the key.In a representative sense, the orthogonal experimental design with four factors and five levels is used to choose the inputs of the training dataset, and the outputs are calculated by using fast Lagrangian analysis continua(FLAC).The decimal ant colony algorithm(DACA) is also used to determine the parameters.Calculation results show that the values of the two parameters, and δ2 have great effect on the performance of LS-SVM.After the training of LS-SVM,the inputs are sampled according to the probabilistic distribution, and the outputs are predicted with the trained LS-SVM,thus the reliability analysis can be performed by the MC method.A program compiled by Matlab is employed to calculate its reliability. Results show that the method of combining LS-SVM and MC simulation is applicable to the reliability analysis of soft foundation settlement. 展开更多

The various factors influencing the settlement of composite foundation have been more completely studied through numerical simulation. The influence on the settlement of composite foundation of the geometry and mechanical properties of the pile, soil, cushion, and the interface between pile and soil have been investigated through computer simulation, in which the contact elements with zero thickness are used. Some valuable conclusions for the settlement of composite foundation have been obtained: (1) The method using the contact element of zero thickness is successful when used in the simulation of the settlement of composite foundation; (2) Among the factors influencing the settlement of composite foundation, the compression modulus of the soil is the largest, and the cohesion of the soil is the second largest; (3) The effects on settlement of the internal friction angle of the soil, the elastic modulus, the radius, and the length of the pile, and the elestic modulus of the cushion are also more obvious. 展开更多

The compression modulus(Es)is one of the most significant soil parameters that affects the compressive deformation of geotechnical systems, such as foundations. However,it is difficult and sometime costly to obtain this parameter in engineering practice. In this study,we aimed to develop a non-parametric ensemble artificial intelligence(AI)approach to calculate the Es of soft clay in contrast to the traditional regression models proposed in previous studies.A gradient boosted regression tree(GBRT)algorithm was used to discern the non-linear pattern between input variables and the target response, while a genetic algorithm(GA)was adopted for tuning the GBRT model's hyper-parameters.The model was tested through 10-fold cross validation.A dataset of 221 samples from 65 engineering survey reports from Shanghai infrastructure projects was constructed to evaluate the accuracy of the new model5 s predictions. The mean squared error and correlation coefficient of the optimum GBRT model applied to the testing set were 0.13 and 0.91,respectively,indicating that the proposed machine learning(ML)model has great potential to improve the prediction of Es for soft clay.A comparison of the performance of empirical formulas and the proposed ML method for predicting foundation settlement indicated the rationality of the proposed ML model and its applicability to the compressive deformation of geotechnical systems. This model, however, cannot be directly applied to the prediction of Es in other sites due to its site specificity. This problem can be solved by retraining the model using local data. This study provides a useful reference for future multi-parameter prediction of soil behavior. 展开更多

The long-term settlement of calcareous sand foundations caused by daily periodic fluctuations has become a significant geological hazard, but effective monitoring tools to capture the deformation profiles are still rarely reported. In this study,a laboratory model test and an in situ monitoring test were conducted. An optical frequency domain reflectometer(OFDR)with high spatial resolution(1 mm)and high accuracy(10-6)was used to record the soil strain responses to groundwater table and varied loads. The results indicated that the fiber-optic measurements can accurately locate the swelling and compressive zones.During the loading process, the interlock between calcareous sand particles was detected, which increased the internal friction angle of soil. The foundation deformation above the sliding surface was dominated by compression, and the soil was continuously compressed beneath the sliding surface. After 26e48 h,calcareous sand swelling occurred gradually above the water table, which was primarily dependent on capillary water. The swelling of the soil beneath the groundwater table was completed rapidly within less than 2 h.When the groundwater table and load remain constant, the compression creep behavior can be described by the Yasong-Wang model with R2¼0.993.The daily periodically varying in situ deformation of calcareous sand primarily occurs between the highest and lowest groundwater tables,i.e.4.2e6.2 m deep. The tuff interlayers with poor water absorption capacity do not swell or compress, but they produce compressive strain under the influence of deformed calcareous sand layers. 展开更多

Long-pile groups of railway foundation undergo excessive settlements after groundwater reductions, which may exceed the settlement limit and threaten the safe operation of high-speed trains. However, the effect of groundwater reduction on a long-pile group(greater than 20 m in length)has not been fully understood, especially in respect of repeated reductions. In this study,a centrifuge test was conducted to investigate the responses of pile groups in silty soils subjected to repeated falls in the water table. The behavior of the piles was discussed based both on the test and on 3D numerical analyses. With the derived coef-ficientβfor the axial force evaluation of the pile, the effect of lowering the water table on the railway pile foundation could be seen. Results of the tests and numerical analyses indicated that the water table decline significantly increased the down-drag and axial force of the pile, causing significant settlement.A longer pile presented a larger axial force at the neutral point.Nevertheless, the incremental percentage of the axial force decreased with increasing pile length with the same water table reduction.Because of group effect, the displacement of soil next to the center pile was smaller than that near the corner piles and showed a similar trend as the axial force of the pile.As the water table fell, the static load ratio affecting the progress of pile settlement increased dis-advantageously,possibly inducing excessive pile settlement.A design method for railway pile foundations taking account of lowering groundwater was proposed with an example application, which provided a reference for similar projects. 展开更多

Additional displacement of the building foundations over old goaf are prone to happen under the addi- tional loads induced by new buildings, weakening-rock mass by mining and seismic actions, which will cause serious damage to the buildings. In order to analyze the safety of the building foundations safety over the old goaf. the structure characteristics of the strata over the old goaf was investigated and the instability conditions of overhanging rocks upon old goaf were also analyzed in this paper. The results indicate that the stability of overhanging rocks is remarkably decreased by the interactions of mining fractures, earthquake force and building load, in addition, the settlement of the foundations over old goal is increased by the instability of overhanging rocks. According to the location of a new power plant in Yima Mine and its ambient conditions, we defined the influence scope of old goal via resistivity tomography. Based on the seismic parameters of the construction site, a numerical FLAC3d model of the building foundation under the seismic actions and building load was developed. The numerical results are obtained as follows: the foundation of the main power house meets the requirement of 6° seismic fortification intensity: however, under 7° seismic fortification intensity, the maximum differential settlement of foundation between the neighboring pillars is close to the maximum allowable value, while the seismic fortification intensity reaches 8°, but the safety requirements will not be satisfied. 展开更多

The safeguarding of Venice and the Venetian lagoon (Italy) from rising water is of great national interest. Besides the normal tidal regime, the effects of an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods in the lagoon have been accentuated by a reduction in the elevation of the land in respect to the actual average sea level. With the aim of reducing the vulnerability of the lagoon, the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research financed the research project "The geotechnical model of the subsurface for the safeguarding of Venice and its lagoon", to study the compressibility of the lagoon deposits, both by natural causes and as a consequence of overloading with heavy structures. The project involved the construction of a large experimental embankment in the Treporti area of the lagoon, in order to perform a full-scale long-term compression test on the lagoon soils. By using various geomatic and geotechnical monitoring techniques, it was possible to appraise very small vertical movements of the ground induced by the compressibility of the highly heterogeneous silty formations. High-precision data was acquired by means of classical topographic methodologies integrated with continuous GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements. In addition, vertical displacements of the ground were obtained using geotechnical instrumentation. This cross-monitoring approach provided a valuable tool for analyzing both the natural and anthropic causes of settlement. 展开更多

The interaction between plates and foundations is a typical problem encountered in geotechnical engineering. The long-term plate performance is highly dependent on the theological characteristics of ground soil. Compared with conventional linear theology, the fractional calculus-based theory is a more powerful mathematical tool that can address this issue. This paper proposes a fractional Merchant model (FMM) to investigate the time-dependent behavior of a simply supported rectangular plate on viscoelastic foundation. The correspondence principle involving Laplace transforms was employed to derive the closed-form solutions of plate response under uniformly distributed load. The plate deflection, bending moment, and foundation reaction calculated using the FMM were compared with the results obtained from the analogous elastic model (EM) and the standard Merchant model (SMM). It is shown that the upper and lower bound solutions of the FMM can be determined using the EM. In addition, a parametric study was performed to examine the influences of the model parameters on the time- dependent behavior of the plate-foundation interaction problem. The results indicate that a small fractional differential order corresponds to a plate resting on a sandy soil foundation, while the fractional differential order value should be increased for a clayey soil foundation. The long-term performance of a foundation plate can be accurately simulated by varying the values of the fractional differential order and the viscosity coefficient. The observations from this study reveal that the proposed fractional model has the capability to capture the variation of plate deflection over many decades of time. 展开更多

The direct solution, using the condensation method,is presented. This method allows the structural and geotechnical engineers to treat the problem separately and then assemble a relatively small matrix that can be solved directly, even within a spreadsheet. There are certain concerns that the resultant matrix may be ill-conditioned when the structure is very stiff. This paper suggests an alternative method that essentially relaxes the system from an infinitely rigid structure solution. As such,it does not encounter the problems associated with stiff systems. The two methods are evaluated for an example problem of tunneling below a framed structure. It is found that while the direct method may fail to predict reasonable values when the structure is extremely rigid, the alternative method is stable. The relaxation method can therefore be used in cases where there are concerns about the reliability of a direct solution. 展开更多
