The Qinghai-Tibet plateau consists of multiple terranes, with a complex geological history, including the evo- lution of the Tethys Ocean basin, the convergence of terranes and island arcs, multiple subductions, multiple collisions and multiple orogens, over a long period of action of continental dynamic processes. Before the Indian and the Asian plates collided, during the Early Paleozoic, it was already a large orogen and terrane collision complex. As a result of the collision of the Indian and Asian plates, the fast uplift of Qinghai- Tibet plateau became the most magnificent event on the earth during the Cenozoic. It formed a vast, seemingly boundless high plateau with borders consisting of mountain chains with very high peaks, and steep gorges.展开更多

As one of the largest mountain ranges in Central Asia and Northwest China, the Tianshan contains 15 935 glaciers with a total area of 15 416 km2. These glaciers are a vital source of water for more than 100 million people and for wildlife ecosystems in this vast arid and semi-arid land. Urumqi Glacier No. 1, the best monitored glacier in China, is located at the headwaters of the Urumqi River in eastern Tianshan and is within the core area of Central Asia.展开更多

For example, the melting of glaciers and the changes induced in both the global carbon cycle and the freeze-thaw cycle of the polar regions due to global warming have exerted pressure on the polar environment. Furthermore, the warming climate, changes in hydrological conditions, and changes to the rates of methane and nitrous oxide production and respiration in different types of soil have also constituted a challenge to polar region ecosystems.展开更多

By the 1950s, cardiovascular disease had grown to epidemic proportions in the West and it had already become clear that hypertension, cigarette smoking and hyperlipidemia were important predisposing factors for atherosclerosis; in the 1960s,diabetes mellitus emerged as an additional important risk factor. Cardiovascular disease was still uncommon in regions of the world where malnutrition, childhood diarrhea and infectious disease were rampant and by far the leading causes of death.展开更多
