Introduction:Human dependence on forests is a multifaceted phenomenon. The degree of reliance on forests varies geographically, overtime and across communities. These dynamics underpin the importance of understanding the determinants of household reliance on forests for the long-term sustainable forest management and conservation. This paper presents an analysis of socio-economic determinants on the level of household forest dependency in Chobe enclave,Botswana. The study hypothesised that the level of household forest dependency will significantly differ across a range of socio-economic factors. Methods:Data was collected through a structured questionnaire survey of 183 households, randomly selected from three communities bordering Chobe Forest Reserve.Binary logistic regression model was used for analysing data. Results:Results showed that age and education significantly influenced household reliance on forests, while other socio-economic factors were not significant.Forest dependency was observed to be decreasing with an increase on both respondent age and educational level. Therefore, the youth were likely to be more reliant on forest products compared to their elderly counterpart while higher educational attainment lessened reliance on forest products. Conclusion:In order to foster a balance between forest dependency and biodiversity conservation, alternative opportunities and provision and access to higher education aimed at diversifying young people’s livelihood activities are vital in reducing forest dependency, hence protecting forests for posterity. 展开更多

Dependency on forest resources poses a threat to the environment in Patharghata, Bangladesh. Therefore, this study explores the role of forest resource in the life and livelihood of coastal people as well as to understand the effectiveness of forest and status of forest dependency in and around south-central coast in Patharghata, Bangladesh. We collected data randomly from 105 household heads through both open and close-ended questionnaire. To investigate the forest dependency and people’s perception regarding alternative solutions, Microsoft excel software program has been applied. The findings reveal that usage of fuelwood in cooking, housing structure, fish catching, honey & fodder collection significantly contributes to household dependency on forest resources, while other variables seem to be insignificant. Our study amplifies that the share of forest income to the total household income was only 19% while other earning sources provided 81% income. The result shows that respondent people collect forest resources primarily for cooking purpose with a share of 71% where 9% forest resources are collected as fodder followed by 8% forest resource collection as food and sheltering purposes. Moreover, the study found that using alternative cooking system, artificial instruments, declaring the forest as tourist spot, changes in housing structure, occupation are some effective options to reduce forest dependency. The study concludes that these alternative options need more financial and other support from the government, non-government and other civil society organizations to cut down forest resource dependency. 展开更多

Non-timber forest products(NTFPs)play a significant role in the improvement of the forest-dependent people’s livelihoodsaround the world, strengthening protection for the sustainable use of forests. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the influence of occupational category-wise(fuelwood collectors,farmers,small-scale businessmen, day labourers, and tea estate labourers)dependencyon NTFPsand the role of NTFPs on household income around the Khadimnagar National Park(KNP)in northeastern Bangladesh. In 2014,178purposively selected respondents from four villages(out of 22 villagesaround the KNP)were interviewed face-to-face using a semi-structured questionnaire. The study observed that these forest-dependent communities utilized resources of the KNP mainly for domestic energy supply, household income, and house construction. Results showed that income from NTFPs made a significant contribution to family income.Income data analysis indicated that small-scale businessmen earned relatively more income from NTFPs,followed by tea estate labourersand day labourers. The study revealed significant negative relationships of the distance of households from the forest with the amount of NTFPs collected(P<0.01)and monthly income from NTFPs(P<0.01).Positive significant relationships were found between the amount of NTFPs collected and the time spent in NTFP collection(P<0.001),as well as betweenmonthly income from NTFPs and family size(P<0.001).The fuelwood collectors and farmers collected significantly greater amounts of NTFPs per trip(P<0.001)than other occupational categories. The households that were moderately to highly dependent on NTFPs collected significantly higher amounts of NTFPs pertrip(P<0.01)than the households that were moderately dependent and less dependent on NTFPs.Community dependence on KNP’sresources, community’sappreciation of the KNP’s ecosystem services for villagers’livelihoods, and community’s high levels of concern for forest conservation provided a foundation for the sustainable management of the KNP.The study findings will be useful for designing an effective forest management plan and policy for NTFP management and forest conservation with the active involvement of the forest-dependent people in northeastern Bangladesh. 展开更多

Rural communities in developing countries often struggle with resource dependency, economic challenges, and poor infrastructure, and villages in Uttarakhand,India, are no exception. This study aims to examine the socioeconomic factors influencing forest conservation, assess livelihood dependency on forest resources, and evaluate how socioeconomic status shapes sustainable forest management in Shishambara and Buddhi villages in Dehradun. The study employed purposive and random sampling covering 10%of households, using structured surveys, interviews, field observations, market surveys, and focus group discussions. The survey reveals an agriculture-dominated livelihood, engaging 60%in Buddhi and 65%in Shishambara, alongside private-sector jobs and daily wage labour.Literacy rates differ significantly, with Buddhi at 72%and Shishambara at 58%.Despite accessibility to LPG connections, traditional cooking fuels like fuelwood and cow dung remain predominant, utilized by 70%of households in Buddhi and 75%in Shishambara. Most homes are Pakka, yet only 18.8%in Buddhi and 22%in Shishambara have toilets.Public transport is scarce, leaving villagers reliant on private vehicles. These findings underscore the need for policies that address resource management, improve basic services, and support sustainable development, offering a road map for uplifting rural livelihoods and bridging infrastructure gaps. 展开更多
