The optimal allocation of foreign resources requires a minimum level of domestic development,including financial development to benefit from the potential benefits of foreign direct investment.This study discusses the...The optimal allocation of foreign resources requires a minimum level of domestic development,including financial development to benefit from the potential benefits of foreign direct investment.This study discusses the mediating role of financial development in the effect of foreign direct investment on economic growth and establishes the banking sector threshold for the 18 least developed African countries over the period 2000 to 2020.We used the generalized method of moments(GMM)and the threshold regression(TR)as part of the dynamic panel data model.The results show the non-significant contribution of foreign direct investment and the banking sector to economic growth.After interaction,the effect of foreign direct investment becomes positive but not significant.However,the coefficient of the interaction variable is significantly negative.This implies that the financial system is unable to allocate foreign resources efficiently.For this reason,this paper resorted to applying the threshold regression to determine the minimum threshold of the banking sector and established a threshold of 74.58%.It therefore becomes necessary for the 18 least developed African countries to develop the financial system in order to get full benefits of foreign direct investment.展开更多

BACKGROUND Occult intraocular foreign bodies(IOFBs)can present with atypical symptoms and clinical signs,making diagnosis challenging.We describe a case of an undetected IOFB that was missed on both computed tomograph...BACKGROUND Occult intraocular foreign bodies(IOFBs)can present with atypical symptoms and clinical signs,making diagnosis challenging.We describe a case of an undetected IOFB that was missed on both computed tomography and B-ultrasound,ulti-mately leading to ocular siderosis and secondary glaucoma.CASE SUMMARY A 55-year-old male patient presented to our clinic reporting a one-month history of right ocular discomfort and progressive visual deterioration.The patient had previously received a glaucoma diagnosis at a local healthcare facility.His ocular history included blunt trauma to the affected eye five years prior to presentation.Slit-lamp examination revealed corneal and iris lesions in the right eye.Pupillary dilation facilitated the identification of traumatic lens opacities.Diagnostic imaging modalities,including B-scan ultrasonography and computed tomo-graphy,showed no evidence of retained intraocular foreign material.The patient subsequently underwent uncomplicated pars plana vitrectomy,during which the occult foreign body was successfully extracted.The procedure was completed without intraoperative or immediate postoperative complications.CONCLUSION Awareness of IOFBs in individuals who work in high-risk occupations and prompt referral to a retinal surgeon are very important.展开更多

As the Sarawak state government accelerates infrastructure development to stimulate economic growth,it has attracted numerous foreign construction enterprises-particularly Chinese firms-entering the market through low...As the Sarawak state government accelerates infrastructure development to stimulate economic growth,it has attracted numerous foreign construction enterprises-particularly Chinese firms-entering the market through low-cost bidding.However,this foreign-dominated model,while improving efficiency,has triggered local enterprise marginalization,industrial chain fragmentation,payment delays,and project setbacks,undermining the intended economic spillover effects of public investment.Grounded in policy analysis and field evidence within a dependency theory framework,this study evaluates the structural impacts of foreign participation on Sarawak’s local economy,uncovers governance gaps,and proposes strategies to enhance local economic resilience under open-market conditions.The findings reveal that foreign contractors(especially Chinese enterprises),despite their capital and technological advantages in dominating mega-projects,exhibit pervasive shortcomings:inadequate local participation(falling far below the 40%policy target),deficient knowledge transfer(local firms hold only 6%of green technology patents),significant value leakage(foreign profit repatriation dominated project value flows),and widespread execution delays/cost overruns due to underestimation of tropical climate-geological risks,institutional maladaptation,and resource misallocation.Drawing on experiences from the Philippines,Indonesia,and Vietnam,the study proposes systemic reforms:introducing a Low-Bid Risk Evaluation System(LRES),enforcing a mandatory Local Participation Index(LPI),establishing a Smart-Contract-Based Digital Payment Chain System(DPCS)to protect subcontractors,and requiring pre-bid local adaptation training for foreign contractors.These recommendations aim to construct“embedded institutional resilience,”transforming policy intent into executable governance mechanisms to ensure infrastructure investment genuinely serves Sarawak’s inclusive and sustainable growth.展开更多

文摘Based on conversation analysis theory,this study explored how teachers and students used discourse markers in foreign language classrooms and how these markers affect classroom interaction.The results showed that teachers use different discourse markers in different teaching stages such as lead-in,presentation,practice and summary to make their teaching more organized and clearer.However,students used these markers less often,and their expressions are often less coherent.Based on these findings,the study suggests teaching strategies for teachers and learning strategies for students to improve how they use discourse markers.This can help make foreign language teaching more effective and interactive.

文摘With the acceleration of global economic integration and the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce,an increasing number of foreign trade enterprises are encountering new market opportunities and challenges.In recent years,the“full custody”model has gradually emerged,providing one-stop service support for cross-border e-commerce enterprises.While this model reduces operational difficulties,it also introduces new requirements for the business models of Chinese foreign trade enterprises.This paper examines how foreign trade enterprises can respond to the opportunities and challenges presented by the full custody model from five key perspectives:background analysis,business layout adjustments,marketing channel innovation,digital and intelligent empowerment,and flexible operational strategies.The findings aim to provide insights into the sustainable development of foreign trade enterprises within the cross-border e-commerce ecosystem.

文摘BACKGROUND Occult intraocular foreign bodies(IOFBs)can present with atypical symptoms and clinical signs,making diagnosis challenging.We describe a case of an undetected IOFB that was missed on both computed tomography and B-ultrasound,ulti-mately leading to ocular siderosis and secondary glaucoma.CASE SUMMARY A 55-year-old male patient presented to our clinic reporting a one-month history of right ocular discomfort and progressive visual deterioration.The patient had previously received a glaucoma diagnosis at a local healthcare facility.His ocular history included blunt trauma to the affected eye five years prior to presentation.Slit-lamp examination revealed corneal and iris lesions in the right eye.Pupillary dilation facilitated the identification of traumatic lens opacities.Diagnostic imaging modalities,including B-scan ultrasonography and computed tomo-graphy,showed no evidence of retained intraocular foreign material.The patient subsequently underwent uncomplicated pars plana vitrectomy,during which the occult foreign body was successfully extracted.The procedure was completed without intraoperative or immediate postoperative complications.CONCLUSION Awareness of IOFBs in individuals who work in high-risk occupations and prompt referral to a retinal surgeon are very important.

文摘As the Sarawak state government accelerates infrastructure development to stimulate economic growth,it has attracted numerous foreign construction enterprises-particularly Chinese firms-entering the market through low-cost bidding.However,this foreign-dominated model,while improving efficiency,has triggered local enterprise marginalization,industrial chain fragmentation,payment delays,and project setbacks,undermining the intended economic spillover effects of public investment.Grounded in policy analysis and field evidence within a dependency theory framework,this study evaluates the structural impacts of foreign participation on Sarawak’s local economy,uncovers governance gaps,and proposes strategies to enhance local economic resilience under open-market conditions.The findings reveal that foreign contractors(especially Chinese enterprises),despite their capital and technological advantages in dominating mega-projects,exhibit pervasive shortcomings:inadequate local participation(falling far below the 40%policy target),deficient knowledge transfer(local firms hold only 6%of green technology patents),significant value leakage(foreign profit repatriation dominated project value flows),and widespread execution delays/cost overruns due to underestimation of tropical climate-geological risks,institutional maladaptation,and resource misallocation.Drawing on experiences from the Philippines,Indonesia,and Vietnam,the study proposes systemic reforms:introducing a Low-Bid Risk Evaluation System(LRES),enforcing a mandatory Local Participation Index(LPI),establishing a Smart-Contract-Based Digital Payment Chain System(DPCS)to protect subcontractors,and requiring pre-bid local adaptation training for foreign contractors.These recommendations aim to construct“embedded institutional resilience,”transforming policy intent into executable governance mechanisms to ensure infrastructure investment genuinely serves Sarawak’s inclusive and sustainable growth.

文摘Nowadays,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent,which boosts the development of film industry and highlights the importance of subtitle translation.However,in China,subtitling is a relatively new research field of translation.This study explores the guiding role of domestication and foreignization strategies in English film subtitle translation.On the basis of material from Ice Age,the paper carries on the analysis of film subtitle translation in terms of expressions with typical cultural features and idioms&proverbs under the effective guidance of domestication and foreignization translation strategies.It’s concluded that domestication and foreignization strategies can provide theoretical guidance for subtitling and appropriate combination of the two strategies can achieve better translation effects.
文摘Throughout decades of foreign language(L2) teaching,a recurring issue has been the role of the first language(L1) in the classroom.A long-term and wide-ranging debate persists regarding practical and theoretical questions about the significance of the L1’ s obvious influence on the L2 being learned.Although many feel that the L1 should not be used in the classroom,other researchers, teachers,and learners do see a role for the L1 and support its use as a communication strategy and instructional tool.This article will look at the historical background of this topic,and describe how the L1 is currently being used in the L2 classroom,including in written translation activities.A specific explanation will also be given about the benefits of using translation for assessing reading comprehension.
