In hilly regions, the existence of surface cracks in rock mass induces a potential threat to structural stability. Thus, the present research aims to explore the impact of surface cracks on the loadbearing capacity of strip footing placed on the rock mass.By taking into account the various boundary constraints across the surface of crack edges, the study investigates the presence of two categories of surface cracks,namely(1)separated crack,and(2)fine crack. The lower bound limit analysis is employed in conjunction with the finite element method(LBFELA)to conduct the numerical analysis. In order to evaluate rock mass yielding, the power conic programming(PCP)method is utilized to implement the generalized Hoek-Brown(GHB)failure criterion. The stability of the strip footing is analyzed by determining the bearing capacity factor(Nσγ),which is presented in the form of design charts by varying the strength parameters of rock, including the Geological Strength Index(GSI),Hoek-Brown material parameter(mi),Disturbance factor(D),and Normalised Uniaxial Compressive Strength(σci/γB),whereγis the unit weight of rock mass, and B is the width of strip footing. The study also investigates the impact of cracks on strip footings, considering different positions of the crack(LC)and depths of the crack(DC).The results demonstrate that the influence of the fine crack is only noticeable until the LC/B ratio reaches 6.However,for the separated crack, its impact remains significant even when the LC/B ratio exceeds 16.The appearance of fine crack at the edge of the footing results in a decrease in the magnitude Nσγof up to 45%,indicating a substantial reduction in the stability of the footing. The failure patterns are presented and discussed in detail for various cases in this study to examine the effect of surface cracks on the strip footing and to address the extent of the plastic collapse. 展开更多

The present study investigates the influence of embedment depth of isolated footing supporting moment-resisting frame buildings through scaled-down tests. These experiments utilize scaled models representing different building aspect ratios and footing embedment depths. All the model tests are subjected to scaled-down input ground motions of different intensities and magnitudes. These model tests are performed in laminar shear containers through shake table testing. The results obtained for different cases of soil-foundation-structure systems and fixed-base conditions are expressed in terms of natural frequency, peak spectral acceleration, frequency response, lateral deformation,inter-storey drifts, and rocking of the foundation. The analysis reveals that the natural frequency of the coupled system on isolated footings diminishes by 27.52%–58.21%relative to fixed-base conditions, highlighting the significance of accounting for soil-foundation-structure interaction effects. Moreover,a notable increase of 52.97%in the natural frequency of the coupled system is observed as the embedment depth of the footing increases from 0.75 to 6.Additionally,the study demonstrates that the inter-storey drift of the 5-storey building remains well within acceptable limits under dense soil conditions.Consequently, within the parameter range explored in this research, the study concludes that soil-foundation-structure interaction effects are insignificant for low-rise buildings(H≤15 m)supported on isolated footings during seismic events. 展开更多

This paper experimentally studies the effects of the conductivity of a silicon wafer and the gap height between silicon structures and glass substrate on the footing effect for silicon on glass (SOG) structures in the deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process. Experiments with gap heights of 5,20, and 50μm were carried out for performance comparison of the footing effect. Also, two kinds of silicon wafers with resistivity of 2-4 and 0.01-0. 0312Ω· cm were used for the exploration. The results show that structures with resistivity of 0.01 - 0. 0312Ω· cm have better topography than those with resistivity of 2-4Ω· cm; and structures with 50μm-high gaps between silicon structures and glass substrate suffer some- what less of a footing effect than those with 20μm-high gaps, and much less than those with Stem-high gaps. Our theoretical analysis indicates that either the higher conductivity of the silicon wafer or a larger gap height between silicon structures and glass substrate can suppress footing effects. The results can contribute to the choice of silicon type and optimum design for many microsensors. 展开更多

This paper presents two kinematic failure mechanisms of threc-dimensional rectangular footing resting on homogeneous undrained clay foundation under uniaxial vertical loading and uniaxial moment loading. The failure mechanism under vertical loading comprises a plane strain Prandti-type mechanism over the central part of the longer side, and the size of the mechanism gradually reduces at the ends of the longer side and over the shorter side as the corner of rectangular footing is being approached where the direction of soil motion remains normal to each corresponding side respectively. The failure mechanism under moment loading comprises a plane strain scoop sliding mechanism over the central part of the longer side, and the radius of scoop sliding mechanism increases linearly at the ends of the longer side. On the basis of the kinematic failure mechanisms mentioned above, the vertical ultimate bearing capacity and the ultimate bearing capacity against moment or moment ultimate bearing capacity are obtained by use of upper bound limit analysis theory. At the same time, numerical analysis results, Skempton' s results and Salgado et al. 's results are compared with this upper bound solution. It shows that the presented failure mechanisms and plastic limit analysis predictions are validated. In order to investigate the behaviors of undrained clay foundation beneath the rectangular footing subjected to the combined loadings, numerical analysis is adopted by virtue of the general-purpose FEM software ABAQUS, where the clay is assumed to obey the Mohr-Coulomb yielding criterion. The failure envelope and the ultimate bearing capacity are achieved by the numerical analysis results with the varying aspect ratios from length L to breadth B of the rectangular footing. The failure mechanisms of rectangular footing which are subjected to the combined vertical loading V and horizontal loading H (Vertical loading V and moment loading M, and horizontal loading H and moment loading M respectively are observed in the finite element analysis. ) is explained by use of the upper bound plasticity limit analysis theory. Finally, the reason of eccentricity of failure envelope in H-M loading space is given in this study, which can not be explained by use of the traditional ' swipe test'. 展开更多

The effect of geosynthetic reinforcing on bearing capacity of a strip footing resting on georeinforced clayey slopes was investigated. The results of a series of numerical study using finite element analyses on strip footing upon both reinforced and unreinforced clayey slopes were presented. The objectives of this work are to:1) determine the influence of reinforcement on the bearing-capacity of the strip footings adjacent slopes,2) suggest an optimum number of reinforcement and 3) survey the effect of friction angle in clayey soils reinforced by geogrids. The investigations were carried out by varying the edge distance of the footing from slope. Also different numbers of geosynthetic layers were applied to obtaining the maximum bearing capacity and minimum settlement. To achieve the third objective, two different friction angles were used. The results show that the load?settlement behavior and ultimate bearing capacity of footing can be considerably improved by the inclusion of reinforcing layer. But using more than one layer reinforcement, the ultimate bearing capacity does not change considerably. It is also shown that for both reinforced and unreinforced slopes, the bearing capacity increases with an increase in edge distance. In addition,as the soil friction angle is increased, the efficiency of reinforcing reduces. 展开更多

The bearing capacity of interfering footings located near the slope face suffers from reduced bearing capacity due to the formation of the curtailed passive zone. Depending upon the position of the footing, their spacing and steepness of the slope different extents of bearing capacity reduction can be exhibited. A series of finite element investigation has been done with the aid of Plaxis 3 D v AE.01 to elucidate the influence of various geotechnical and geometrical parameters on the ultimate bearing capacity of interfering surface strip footings located at the crest of the natural soil slope. Based on the large database obtained from the numerical simulation, a6-8-1 Artificial Neural Network architecture has been considered for the assessment of the ultimate bearing capacity of interfering strip footings placed on the crest of natural soil slope. Sensitivity analyses have been conducted to establish the relative significance of the contributory parameters, which exhibited that for the stated problem, apart from shear strength parameters, the setback ratio and spacing of footing are the prime contributory parameters. 展开更多

This paper deals with the economically optimized design and sensitivity of two of the most widely used systems in geotechnical engineering: spread footing and retaining wall. Several recent advanced optimization methods have been developed, but very few of these methods have been applied to geotechnical problems. The current research develops a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) approach to obtain the optimum design of spread footing and retaining wall. The algorithm handles the problem-specific constraints using a penalty function approach. The optimization procedure controls all geotechnical and structural design constraints while reducing the overall cost of the structures. To verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm, three case studies of spread footing and retaining wall are illustrated. Comparison of the results of the present method, standard PSO, and other selected methods employed in previous studies shows the reliability and accuracy of the algorithm. Moreover, the parametric performance is investigated in order to examine the effect of relevant variables on the optimum design of the footing and the retaining structure utilizing the proposed method. 展开更多

The node-based smoothed finite element method(NS-FEM)is shortly presented for calculations of the static and seismic bearing capacities of shallow strip footings.A series of computations has been performed to assess variations in seismic bearing capacity factors with both horizontal and vertical seismic accelerations.Numerical results obtained agree very well with those using the slip-line method, revealing that the magnitude of the seismic bearing capacity is highly dependent upon the combinations of various directions of both components of the seismic acceleration. An upward vertical seismic acceleration reduces the seismic bearing capacity compared to the downward vertical seismic acceleration in calculations. In addition, particular emphasis is placed on a separate estimation of the effects of soil and superstructure inertia on each seismic bearing capacity component. While the effect of inertia forces arising in the soil on the seismic bearing capacity is non-trivial,and the superstructure inertia is the major contributor to reductions in the seismic bearing capacity. Both tables and charts are given for practical application to the seismic design of the foundations. 展开更多

In past terrorist attacks, vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED) have been the primary manner of attacking buildings and infrastructures. Preventing unauthorized vehicles from approaching a protected area with anti-ram systems would maintain an established standoff distance against moving and stationary vehicles and consequently reduce blast and debris threats. This strategy has been considered the first line of defence against terrorists. Several types of anti-ram devices have been developed in accordance with U. S. Department of State K-rating criteria, for example, wedge barriers, rising beams, sliding/swing gates, and drop arms. However, these devices typically need a deep foundation for installation and can't be implemented into many locations where a depth of excavation is limited in order to protect utility lines of buildings and infrastructures. This paper presents a recent development of a series of shallow footing anti-ram bollard systems (SFABS) that can satisfy K-12 rating with only five-inch thick footing. A high-fidelity physics based finite element technique with a vehicle crash model is used for predicting anti-ram capacity and determining design parameters of the SFABS. Full-scale vehicle crash tests of the developed SFABS systems have been carried out to validate the design and analysis. 展开更多

A series of dynamic model tests that were performed on a geogrid-reinforced square footing are presented. The dynamic(sinusoidal)loading was applied using a mechanical testing and simulation(MTS)electro-hydraulic servo loading system. In all the tests, the amplitude of loading was±160 kPa;the frequency of loading was 2 Hz.To better ascertain the effect of reinforcement,an unreinforced square footing was first tested. This was followed by a series of tests, each with a single layer of reinforcement. The reinforcement was placed at depths of 0.3B,0.6B and 0.9B,where B is the width of footing. The optimal depth of reinforcement was found to be 0.6B.The effect of adopting this value versus the other two depths was quantified. The single layer of geogrid had an effective reinforcement depth of 1.7B below the footing base. The increase of the depth between the topmost geogrid layer and the bottom of the footing(within the range of 0.9B)did not change the failure mode of the foundation. 展开更多

The undrained vertical bearing capacity of embedded foundation has been extensively studied using analytical and numerical methods.Through comparing the results of a circular embedded foundation in the literature,a significant difference between the bearing capacity factors and depth factors is observed.Based on the previous research findings, numerical computations using FLAC code are carried out in this study to evaluate the undrained bearing capacity of circular foundations with embedment ratios up to five for different base and side foundation roughness conditions.Unlike the foundation base, the roughness of the foundation side has a significant effect on the bearing capacity. The comparison of the present results with numerical studies available in the literature shows that the discrepancy is related to the procedures used to simulate the foundation side interface conditions and to the estimation of the bearing capacity. 展开更多

This study presents a laboratory investigation of load-settlement behaviour of a strip footing resting on iron ore tailings used as a structural fill. The footing was placed at various depths in the tailings bed.The relative density of the tailings was varied as D_r = 50%,70%and 90%.An incremental load was applied on the footing while observing the settlement until the failure took place. The results obtained for tailings were compared with those for the sandy soil.It is observed that the load-bearing capacity and stiffness increase with an increase in footing embedment depth and relative density.Compared to load-settlement behaviour of Perth sandy soil, the tailings fill could have as high as 22 times and 13.5 times the load-bearing capacity and stiffness, respectively. Therefore, the replacement of sandy soil with iron ore tailings for structural fills is cost-effective,and moreover, this application contributes to environmental sustainability in construction. 展开更多

The design of footings on sands is often controlled by settlement rather than bearing capacity. Therefore, settlement predictions are essential in the design of shallow foundations. However, predicted settlements of footings are highly dependent on the chosen elastic modulus and the used method. This paper presents the use of probabilistic analysis to evaluate the variability of predicted settlements of footings on sands, focusing on the load curve(predicted settlements)characterization.Three methodologies, the first-and second-order second-moment(FOSM and SOSM),and Monte Carlo simulation(MCS),for calculating the mean and variance of the estimated settlements through Schmertmann(1970)’s equation, are presented and discussed. The soil beneath the footing is treated as an uncorrelated layered material,so the total settlement and variance are found by adding up the increments of the layers. The deformability modulus(ESi)is considered as the only independent random variable. As an example of application,a hypothetical case of a typical subsoil in the state of Espirito Santo, southeast of Brazil,is evaluated. The results indicate that there is a significant similarity between the SOSM and MCS methods, while the FOSM method underestimates the results due to the non-consideration of the high-order terms in Taylor’s series. The contribution of the knowledge of the uncertainties in settlement prediction can provide a safer design. 展开更多

In this paper, the bearing capacity of strip footings on rock masses has been studied in the seismic case. The stress characteristics or slip line method was used for analysis. The problem was analyzed in the plane strain condition using the Hoeke Brown failure criterion.First, the equilibrium equations along the stress characteristics were obtained and the rock failure criterion was applied. Then, the equations were solved using the finite difference method.A computer code has been provided for analysis.Given the footing and rock parameters, the code can calculate the stress characteristics network and obtain the stress distribution under the footing. The seismic effects have been applied as the horizontal and vertical pseudo-static coefficients. The results of this paper are very close to those of the other studies. The seismic bearing capacity of weightless rock masses can be obtained using the proposed equations and graphs without calculating the whole stress characteristics network. 展开更多

Sand typically exhibits anisotropic internal structure which may significantly influence its mechanical behavior. The material point method (MPM) can eliminate mesh distortion and thus is suitable for investigating geotechnical problems with large deformation. In this study, an advanced anisotropic critical state theory (ACST)-based soil model is implemented in MPM to study the response of strip footing resting on anisotropic sand. The capability of the model is verified by simulating several element tests and strip footing tests with different soil densities and fabric bedding plane orientations. For the footing problem with a vertical load, as the fabric bedding plane orientation increases, the bearing capacity decreases and its corresponding settlement increases. The failure pattern becomes asymmetrical when the bedding plane orientation or the loading direction is inclined. A comparison between the simulation results predicted by the anisotropic and isotropic models is made, which demonstrates that neglecting the fabric anisotropy may lead to the overestimation of the bearing capacity. 展开更多

In this paper, an experimental study for an eccentrically loaded circular footing, resting on a geogridreinforced sand bed, is performed. To achieve this aim, the steel model footing of 120 mm in diameterand sand in relative density of 60% are used. Also, the effects of depth of first and second geogrid layersand number of reinforcement layers (1e4) on the settlement-load response and tilt of footing undervarious load eccentricities (0 cm, 0.75 cm, 1.5 cm, 2.25 cm and 3 cm) are investigated. Test results indicatethat ultimate bearing capacity increases in comparison with unreinforced condition. It is observed thatwhen the reinforcements are placed in the optimum embedment depth (u/D ?0.42 and h/D ?0.42), thebearing capacity ratio (BCR) increases with increasing load eccentricity to the core boundary of footing, and that with further increase of load eccentricity, the BCR decreases. Besides, the tilt of footing increaseslinearly with increasing settlement. Finally, by reinforcing the sand bed, the tilt of footing decreases at 2layers of reinforcement and then increases by increasing the number of reinforcement layers. 展开更多

Ring footings are suitable for the structures like tall transmission towers, chimneys, silos and oil storages. These types of structures are susceptible to horizontal loads(wind load) in addition to their dead weight. In the literature, very little or no effort has been made to study the effect of ring footing resting on reinforced sand when subjected to eccentric, inclined and/or eccentric-inclined loadings. This paper aims to study the behavior of ring footing resting on loose sand and/or compacted randomly distributed fiberreinforced sand(RDFS) when subjected to eccentric(0 B, 0.05 B and 0.1 B, where B is the outer diameter of ring footing), inclined(0°,5°,10°, 15°,-5°,-10° and-15°)and eccentric-inclined loadings by using a finite element(FE) software PLAXIS 3 D. The behavior of ring footing is studied by using a dimensionless factor called reduction factor(RF). The numerical model used in the PLAXIS 3 D has been validated by conducting model plate load tests. Moreover, an empirical expression using regression analysis has been presented which will be helpful in plotting a load-settlement curve for the ring footing. 展开更多

Numerical computations using the finite difference code FLAC (fast Lagrangian analysis of continua) are presented to evaluate the soil bearing capacity factors Nc,Nq and Nγ for circular smooth and rough footings. The influence of nonassociative flow rule on the ultimate bearing capacity of a circular footing is investigated. The footing rests on the surface of a homogeneous soil mass and a Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion have been assumed for the soil behavior. The values of ultimate bearing capacity factors Nc,Nq and Nγ are obtained for a wide range of values of the friction angle for five different values of the dilation angle. The values from the numerical simulation are found to decrease significantly with the increase of nonassociativity of the soil. The results are compared with those derived from existing classical solutions. 展开更多
