To feed the increasing world population, more food needs to be produced from agricultural land systems. Solutions to produce more food with fewer resources while minimizing adverse environmental and ecological consequences require sustainable agricultural land use practices as supplementary to advanced biotechnology and agronomy. This review paper, from a land system perspective, systematically proposed and analyzed three interactive strategies that could possibly raise future food production under global change. By reviewing the current literatures, we suggest that cropland expansion is less possible amid iferce land competition, and it is likely to do less in increasing food production. Moreover, properly allocating crops in space and time is a practical way to ensure food production. Climate change, dietary shifts, and other socio-economic drivers, which would shape the demand and supply side of food systems, should be taken into consideration during the decision-making on rational land management in respect of sustainable crop choice and allocation. And ifnally, crop-speciifc agricultural intensiifcation would play a bigger role in raising future food production either by increasing the yield per unit area of individual crops or by increasing the number of crops sown on a particular area of land. Yet, only when it is done sustainably is this a much more effective strategy to maximize food production by closing yield and harvest gaps. 展开更多

Henan,China,is likely the most populous agricultural province worldwide. It is China’s major grain-producing area, with a continuously increasing population(96 million),which is greater than 93%of countries worldwide. However, this province has been experiencing unprecedented urbanization recently due to national policies and measures, such as a plan to build the capital city of Henan into a national center, resulting in severe conflicts in land use that endanger food security regionally and globally. To facilitate decision-making on this problem,we explored the detailed urban-rural development of Henan by modeling these land-use conflicts.Conventional modeling of a region’s urban-rural development is to navigate trade-offs(a)solely between different land-use types(b)by assuming that each type provides a single service(e.g.,croplands produce all the food),and(c)under a polynomial regression-based projection of population. In contrast,we considered both land-use type and intensity, resulting in a detailed land system for Henan.By introducing the concept of land system services(e.g.,food production),we established a many-to-many relationship between land system classes and services. These allowed us to carry out the most comprehensive modeling of Henan’s urban-rural development under eighteen combined scenarios of population growth and land-use policies on food production. The modeling results of these scenarios provide a solid basis for making decisions regarding Henan’s urban-rural development. We also revealed the influence mechanism of population growth,land-use policies, and their combinations, highlighting the benefits of securing food production by agricultural intensification rather than merely expanding the area of cropland. 展开更多

This paper reviews the current literature on the relationship between air pollution and food security from the perspective of food system. It highlights that agricultural emissions which substantially contribute to air pollution could happen at every stage along the food supply chain. Meanwhile, air pollution can not only affect plant growth and animal health but also shift market equilibrium of both agro-inputs and outputs in the food supply chain and thereby affect food security indirectly. Furthermore, this study evaluates the effects of agricultural policy and energy policy on food security and air pollution, respectively, and provides an overview of potential policy instruments to reduce air pollution while ensuring food security. Finally, we identify the remaining research and policy issues for further studies, mainly focusing on the study of household's bounded rational behaviors and the issue of rural aging population. 展开更多

The poor performance of the agricultural sector as reflected in high prices of food stuffs as well as huge importation of food has been a major concern to many governments in Africa. Agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana's economy and women who constitute about 70% to 80% of farm labour face discrimination in terms of means of production such as land. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of women's land rights on food production in the Brong-Ahafo region which is Ghana's food basket. Several land reforms have been instituted to ensure equitable access to land in order to enhance food production, yet the study reveals that many women have limited or no access to land and experience insecurity of tenure, which affects their farming methods, choice of crops grown, and production levels, consequently, resulting in low incomes and poverty. Relevant Primary Rate Access (RPRA) tools were used to gather data. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics using Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Microsoft soRwares and presented into percentages, tabulation, and graphics. The research also revealed that the lack of awareness and education on land reforms and policies coupled with escalating land prices and complicated land transaction method are the major challenges to women's access and security over land. The study recommends the decentralization of the land title registration process, gender mainstreaming in the land title registration process, and intensification of advocacy on land rights, among others as crucial to improve women's access, control, and security over land for agricultural purposes 展开更多

The production of safety food is an important foundation for establishing a Food Quality Safety Management System. The investigation focused on 11 kinds of safety food produced by 11 agricultural enterprises in Jiaxing, a part of the Yangtze River delta region in China. The economic performances of safety foods were also analyzed. The analysis showed that safety food production input was more than that of normal food and had different cost items compared to normal food. The rate of cost overflow was lower than the rate of comparative returns, resulting in the economic performance of safety food being higher than that of normal food. However, there were some problems, such as high quality without high prices. In the production of safety food, we will mainly pay attention to them. 展开更多

Soil is the foundation for sustainable foodproduction and environmental protection. Created byunsustainable land management practices and a range ofsocial, economic and environmental drivers, soil degrada-tion and pollution have been an ongoing threat tointernational food security and environmental quality.Soil degradation and pollution assessments are, however, often focused on the soil itself with little scope to devisenew soil management approaches that match foodproduction systems and/or environmentalprotection. This study draws lessons from an Australia-China JointResearch Center Program, Healthy Soils for SustainableFood Production and Environmental Quality: a researchplatform that has brought together multi-disciplinaryapproaches fromworld-renowned universitiesandresearch organizations in Australia and China. To thisend, a framework is presented for future soil managementin a new way that combines excellence in research, industry and policymakers in a partnership that will ensurenot only the right focus of the research but also that high-quality outputs will be transferable to industry and end-users. 展开更多

Sustainable food production in the changing climate and dwindling water resources in the Global Dry Land Alliance(GDLA)member countries is a real challenge, especially when considering marginal lands in dryland systems. The definition of marginal land is very vague and defined from different perspectives(pragmatism about marginal lands).Dryland itself indicates"marginality"due to water stress. In general, the abandoned agriculture land where food production is not economical, and has low inherent productivity potential is considered marginal;however,a land may be marginal for agriculture but vital for grazing. In this paper attempts have been made to give review of literature(water stress, extent of marginal saline lands, marginality).Policy matters(development of soil, water and agriculture strategies)that GDLA and member countries should consider for future sustainable food production in their countries, including but not limited to,assessment of land resources for agriculture potential, defining, mapping and characterizing marginal lands, and use of innovative technologies(conservation agriculture, climate smart agriculture, integrated soil reclamation program and capacity building)for food production, are discussed. The international perception(FAO,UNEP,CGIAR)on marginal lands is also described. An innovative approach of using national biocapacity and ecological footprint is used to assess marginality of GDLA member countries.Ecological overshoot(using 1.5 earth planets)and biocapacity debtor and creditor countries are highlighted.Challenges and best management practices for food production in marginal lands are included.Other important issues, like leasing land abroad,GDLA strategic food reserves and best management practices, innovative ideas for food production are shared. Finally recommendations are drafted for actions by GDLA,its member countries and the partners. 展开更多

Mercury(Hg),especially methylmercury(MeHg),accumulation in rice grain due to rice paddy possessing conditions conducive to Hg methylation has led to human Hg exposure through consumption of rice-based daily meals. In addition to being a food staple, rice is widely used as a raw material to produce a vast variety of processed food products.Little is known about Hg levels in snacking rice-food products and potential Hg exposure from consumption of them, besides previous studies on infant rice cereals.Aiming to provide complementary information for a more complete assessment on Hg exposure risk originated from Hgcontaining rice, this study determined total Hg(THg)and MeHg levels in 195 rice-containing and rice-free processed food products covering all major types of snack foods marketed in China and the estimated daily intake(EDI)of dietary Hg from the consumption of these foods. The results clearly showed THg and MeHg contents in rice-containing foods were significantly higher than rice-free products, suggesting the transfer of Hg and MeHg from the rice to the end products, even after manufacturing processes. Moreover, significant positive correlations were observed between THg,MeHg,or MeHg/THg ratio and rice content for samples containing multiple grains as ingredients, further indicating the deciding role of rice for Hg levels in the end food products.Although the EDI of THg and MeHg via ricebased food products were relatively low compared to the reference dose,it should be considered these snacking food products would contribute additive Hg intake outside of the daily regular meals. 展开更多
