Edo-period historical records and documents preserved a substantial number of images, many of which are related to epidemic outbreaks.Through systematic collation and categorical analysis, this study uses the chronological and thematic characteristics of these images as a framework to examine the response mechanisms of the Japanese government and public during infectious disease pandemics in the Edo period,as well as the multidimensional impacts of epidemics on social economy, culture, and customs.Illustrations of smallpox in medical texts reveal the developmental trajectory of Japan’s traditional medical knowledge system, while drawings in essays and diaries reflect public fear and non-medical cognitive patterns during cholera outbreaks.Epidemic-themed paintings not only document cholera treatment protocols by the government and medical professionals,as well as grassroots prevention and treatment practices for measles, but also vividly depict social dynamics during crises.Images related to epidemics in advertising reflect the prosperity of the pharmaceutical industry in the Edo period, while depictions in folding screens, ukiyozoushi and the occupational illustrations demonstrate societal customs for epidemic response.Collectively, the Edo-period epidemic crises profoundly shaped Japan’s medical system, economic structure, cultural forms, folk traditions, and public psychology, prompting the government, medical professionals, and civilians to develop distinct era-specific social coping mechanisms. 展开更多

Communities and the Poetic Imaginary:A Folklore Essay on the Poetry of the Wild Project

Poetry of the Wild is an ongoing artistic and literary project that according to originator Ana Flores' conception, invites the public "out for a walk" to freshly experience their world through word, sound, and image. Inspired by birdhouse design, these unique configurations of "poetry boxes", combining art and poetry are located in various communal open spaces. Each new project solicits a public response from us all to become catalysts for exploring our environs and questioning how a sense of place informs our consciousness. A folkloristic perspective shapes this discussion about the many variations of this collaborative and public project of poetry boxes, installed on trails, in parks, along rivers, and in library stacks over the past ten years. The primary concerns of folklore interpretation such as tradition, identity, cultural creativity, performance, and narrative analysis, are just a few of the dynamics that can be teased out from investigating a project with such interesting cultural parameters. In this context, cultural sustainability and poetic sensibility deepen our understanding of sense of place, environmental aesthetics, shrine markers, and the scope of individual and communal creative action. 展开更多

Nigerian literatures contain history in the oral tradition and folklore like satire, proverbs, chants, symbolism etc. in the pre-literate period, Nigeria enjoyed high level of verbal art civilization which traditional rulers and the generality of the populace patronized. The oral tradition served as medium of preservation of culture and history of the ancient past and experiences. Though, most Nigerians can still remember their family history, folklore, tradition and genealogy, only few oral artists and youths of nowadays possess the skill and ability needed to chant the lengthy oral literature. It is in the light of the above that this study examined the effect of oral tradition, folklore, and history on the development of education in Nigeria, 1977 till date. The study adopted historical research method using primary and secondary sources of information to analyze data. Primary sources include, like archive materials, oral interviews and secondary sources include, like textbooks, speeches, journals, and internet materials and images. The outlines of the paper are: the definition of concepts, historical background of Nigerian oral tradition, and folklore in the educational system, the place of oral tradition, folklore and history in the education policy in Nigeria since 1977, the effect of oral tradition, folklore and history on the development of education in Nigeria since 1977, the prospects of oral traditions, folklore and history on the development of education in Nigeria, conclusion and a few recommendations for future improvement. The findings of the study revealed that oral traditions, folklore and history were the bed-rock for the development of education and society in the pre-colonial period, but these were dropped gradually with the advent of the colonial masters and gradually deteriorate both in the educational curriculum and general conduct of the society and these have adverse effect on the nation's economy. It is recommended that the beauty of Nigerian history, oral and written traditions, culture, folklore like proverbs, chants, satire and symbolism, be brought back into the school system, politics and every sector of the Nigerian economy for proper advancement to take place in the education sector and for overall national development. 展开更多

At war times, ethnic stereotypes arouse ethnic defense. Kazakh people's mind of ethnic unicity and ethnic defence influenced a lot defending such a great land, in spite of the fact that Kazakhs' zhuz and tribal structure was kept well and people were differentiated by kins. This mind of ethnic unicity and defence became a guarantee of saving Kazakhs as ethnic subject in the complicated political, economical, social, and cultural processes with neighbouring nations like Kalmyk, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Turukpen, Chinese, and Russian. That is why in this paper, the authors' aim is to show stereotypes about the Kalmyk tribes using Kazakh proverbs, heroic eposes, and legends. Writing this paper, the authors set the following objectives: to consider hetero stereotypes and auto stereotypes in Kazakh proverbs; to distinguish a legend as an image of Kazakh people's historical memory; to prove the peculiarities of the Kalmyks character description in Kazakh mythological folklore mind with the help of examples; to show the development of Kazakh ethnic stereotypes in two opposite directions (enmity, alien opinion, and tolerance); to prove that the stereotypes of tolerance prevail over the stereotypes of"enmity" in Kazakh legends; and to show their historical reasons. 展开更多

The present study applies Dr.He Yuanjian's CMT(Conceptual Mapping Theory) to focus on the strategy use of translating Chinese folklore concepts in Hong Lou Meng(i.e.indigenous concepts related to etiquettes and customs) by Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang on the observations of the translators'strategies and the distributional tendencies of translation strategies so as to testify CMT on empirical grounds.Whether it holds true that the preservation of the alien source concepts through translation depends on how successfully they are mapped into the target conceptual system leads to the attempts to study on the distributional tendency of translation strategies of translation tasks, especially,of translating folkloric concepts in this paper. As a result, the tentative outcome of the data observed supports that the concept-mediation theoretic approach to translation process seems able to account for how cognitive constraints affect the production of mapping the unshared concepts. 展开更多

The breadth and depth of cross-cultural communication in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)depend on the establishment of behavioral systems, the construction of TCM’s ma-terial image, and the emotional connection with the general public.Disseminating core Chinese philosophical ideas, such as holism and system theory, along with relevant TCM terminology overseas, requires both top-down institutional frameworks and bottom-up strategies that subtly enhance foreign markets’understanding and acceptance of TCM cul-ture through the promotion of folk activities and folklore. This bottom-up approach helps establish a strong consumer foundation for the TCM cultural industry. Both traditional fes-tival folklore and TCM culture are deeply rooted in the fertile soil of traditional Chinese cul-ture and serve as interpretations of life, health, and disease.By leveraging traditional festival folklore to expand and structure the TCM cultural industry chain, exploring TCM’sunique resources, developing diverse communication media, and fostering cross-cultural commu-nication and integration, the global dissemination of TCM can achieve greater breadth and depth. 展开更多

A Reappraisal of the Byzantine Iconoclasm:Image Conflicts and Reconciliation Strategies in the Inculturation of Catholicism in East Asia

The emergence of the Byzantine Iconoclasm was underpinned by profound historical and cultural factors. Its impact on“icon veneration”serves as a paradigmatic case of religious image conflicts.Between the 16th and 19th centuries,as Catholicism expanded eastward into East Asia,deep-seated conflicts arising from“icon veneration”occurred. These conflicts involved the ancestral worship system in China, the taboos of Shinto in Japan, and the ritual codes in Korea influenced by Confucian culture.A comparative study of these conflicts with the Byzantine Iconoclasm is thus warranted. The conflicts between Catholicism and traditional cultures in East Asia are,in essence, manifestations of the cognitive disparities between the“sacredness”of icons and the“de-iconization”traditions within East Asian cultures. In contrast to the forceful destruction of icons in Byzantium,East Asian responses predominantly took the form of informal communal negotiations. For example,in Quanzhou,China, angel statues were placed within the niches of the Earth God,while in Japan, the Virgin Mary statue was adapted to resemble the Avalokitesvara statue. The key to resolving the conflicts regarding“icon veneration”lies in dissociating the political power connotations of icons and transforming them into“visual media”for cultural dialogue and“spiritual carriers”of a religious nature. The“East Asian experience”thus reveals a harmonization paradigm for religious inculturation during the dissemination of Catholicism, which holds significant implications for the contemporary spread and stability of Catholicism. 展开更多
