A fluid–structure interaction method combining a nonlinear finite element algorithm with a preconditioning finite volume method is proposed in this paper to simulate parachute transient dynamics. This method uses a three-dimensional membrane–cable fabric model to represent a parachute system at a highly folded configuration. The large shape change during parachute inflation is computed by the nonlinear Newton–Raphson iteration and the linear system equation is solved by the generalized minimal residual(GMRES) method. A membrane wrinkling algorithm is also utilized to evaluate the special uniaxial tension state of membrane elements on the parachute canopy. In order to avoid large time expenses during structural nonlinear iteration, the implicit Hilber–Hughes–Taylor(HHT) time integration method is employed. For the fluid dynamic simulations, the Roe and HLLC(Harten–Lax–van Leer contact) scheme has been modified and extended to compute flow problems at all speeds. The lower–upper symmetric Gauss–Seidel(LUSGS) approximate factorization is applied to accelerate the numerical convergence speed. Finally, the test model of a highly folded C-9 parachute is simulated at a prescribed speed and the results show similar characteristics compared with experimental results and previous literature. 展开更多

A direct numerical modeling method for parachute is proposed firstly, and a model for the star-shaped folded parachute with detailed structures is established. The simplified arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian fluid structure interaction (SALE/FSI) method is used to simulate the infla- tion process of a folded parachute, and the flow field calculation is mainly based on operator split- ting technique. By using this method, the dynamic variations of related parameters such as flow field and structure are obtained, and the load jump appearing at the end of initial inflation stage is cap- tured. Numerical results including opening load, drag characteristics, swinging angle, etc. are well consistent with wind tunnel tests. In addition, this coupled method can get more space-time detailed information such as geometry shape, structure, motion, and flow field. Compared with previous inflation time method, this method is a completely theoretical analysis approach without relying on empirical coefficients, which can provide a reference for material selection, performance optimi- zation during parachute design. 展开更多

The fluid influences the dynamic characteristics of the structure system. The dynamic model of a 5-MW tripod offshore wind turbine considering the pile-soil system and fluid structure interaction (FSI) is established, and the structural modes in air and in water are obtained by use of ANSYS. By comparing low-order natural frequencies and mode shapes, the influence of sea water on the free vibration characteristics of offshore wind turbine is analyzed. On basis of the above work, seismic responses under excitation by E1-Centro waves are calculated by the time-history analysis method. The results reveal that the dynamic responses such as the lateral displacement of the foundation and the section bending moment of the tubular piles increase substantially under the influence of the added-mass and hydrodynamic pressure of sea water. The method and conclusions presented in this paper can provide a theoretical reference for structure design and analysis of offshore wind turbines fixed in deep seawater. 展开更多

Fluid-structure interaction is an important issue for non-rigid airships with inflated envelopes. In this study, a wind tunnel test is conducted, and a loosely coupled procedure is correspondingly established for numerical simulation based on computational fluid dynamics and nonlinear finite element analysis methods. The typical results of the numerical simulation and wind tunnel experiment, including the overall lift and deformation, are in good agreement with each other. The results obtained indicate that the effect of fluid-structure interaction is noticeable and should be considered for non-rigid airships. Flow- induced deformation can further intensify the upward lift force and pitching moment, which can lead to a large deformation. Under a wind speed of 15 m/s, the lift force of the non-rigid model is increased to approximatelv 60% compared with that of the rigid model under a high angle of attack. 展开更多

Small and micro unmanned aircraft are the focus of scientific interest due to their wide range of applications. They often operate in a highly unstable flight environment where the application of new morphing wing technologies offers the opportunity to improve flight characteristics. The investigated concept comprises port and starboard adjustable wings, and an adaptive elastoflexible membrane serves as the lifting surface. The focus is on the benefits of the deforming membrane during the impact of a one-minus-cosine type gust.At a low Reynolds number of Re=264000,the morphing wing model is investigated numerically by unsteady fluid-structure interaction simulations.First, the numerical results are validated by experimental data from force and moment, flow field, and deformation measurements.Second, with the rigid wing as the baseline, the flexible case is investigated, focusing on the advantages of the elastic membrane. For all configurations studied, the maximum amplitude of the lift coefficient under gust load shows good agreement between the experimental and numerical results.During the decay of the gust, they differ more the higher the aspect ratio of the wing. When considering the flow field, the main differences are due to the separation behavior on the upper side of the wing. The flow reattaches earlier in the experiments than in the simulations, which explains the higher lift values observed in the former.Only at one intermediate configuration does the lift amplitude of the rigid configuration exceeds that of the flexible by about 12%,with the elastic membrane resulting in a smaller and more uniform peak load, which is also evident in the wing loading and hence in the root bending moment. 展开更多

As a multidisciplinary phenomenon, panel aeroelasticity in shock-dominated flow is featured by two primary interactions:Fluid-Structure Interactions(FSIs)and Shock-Boundary Layer Interactions(SBLIs).The former raises structural concerns, and the latter is of aerodynamic interest. Thus, panel aeroelasticity in shock-dominated flow represents a vital topic for the development and optimization of supersonic vehicles and propulsion systems. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in the methodologies applied to capture structural and fluid dynamics, including theoretical models, numerical simulations, and wind tunnel experiments. The application of data-driven modal decomposition,an advanced technique to extract physically crucial features,on the topic is introduced. From the perspective of FSIs,the distinctive aeroelastic behaviors in shock-dominated flow, including hysteresis phenomena and nonlinear responses, are highlighted. From the perspective of SBLIs,the modifications in their spatial and temporal characteristics imposed by the aeroelastic responses are emphasized.Motivated by the interaction between the shock waves and structural response, different strategies have been proposed to implement aeroelastic suppression and shock control, which have the potential to enhance structural safety and aerodynamic performance in the next generation of high-speed flight vehicles. 展开更多

Owing to the relatively low stiffness of the slide and the considerable deformation under support force, the fluid–structure interaction(FSI)phenomenon in aerostatic slides is generally pronounced. This phenomenon affects the performance of static pressure slides, particularly those with high load-carrying capacity and low stiffness. However, most existing methods for analyzing the efect of FSI on the stiffness of static pressure slides are iterative and computationally expensive. To address this issue,a novel direct method is proposed for evaluating the stiffness of static pressure slides while considering FSI.This method can quickly and precisely obtain numerical solutions.Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed method is validated through experiments.Based on the developed FSI model, the efects of normal force and flm thickness on the normal stiffness of aerostatic slides are also investigated. 展开更多

Effectively controlling the deformation and temperature of heated structures is crucial for achieving highperformance active cooling through fluid flow.In this study, the topology optimization design of structures considering fluid–structure interactions and heat transfer performance was investigated, and then optimized designs of two-dimensional/three-dimensional cooling impingement systems obtained using the proposed method were obtained. In the optimization model, the objective function was constructed as a weighted combination of the mechanical deformations at specific locations and the average temperature within the designated solid channel structures.Additionally, explicit functional interpolation models were introduced to establish connections between the thermal, fluid, and solid properties, along with the element densities. In the analysis model, the strongly coupled structural mechanical deformation and fluid velocity field were analyzed via a dynamicgrid-based finite element model with a Winslow elliptic smoother to automatically track the fluid–structure interface during the process of optimization. To solve the optimization problems, the globally convergent moving asymptotic optimizer method was used to adjust the design variables on the basis of the sensitivity analysis.A demonstration of the efficacy of the proposed algorithm is provided through the presentation of several optimization examples.Furthermore,two-and three-dimensional cooling impingement systems were designed with the proposed method. 展开更多

Oil shale is characterized by a dense structure, low proportion of pores and fissures, and low permeability.Pore-fracture systems serve as crucial channels for shale oil migration, directly influencing the production efficiency of shale oil resources.Effectively stimulating oil shale reservoirs remains a challenging and active research topic. This investigation employed shale specimens obtained from the Longmaxi Formation.Scanning electron microscopy, fluid injection experiments, and fluid-structure interaction simulations were used to comprehensively analyze structural changes and fluid flow behavior under high temperatures from microscopic to macroscopic scales.Experimental results indicate that the temperature has little effect on the structure and permeability of shale before 300℃.However,there are two threshold temperatures within the range of 300 to 600℃that have significant effects on the structure and permeability of oil shale. The first threshold temperature is between 300 and 400℃,which causes the oil shale porosity,pore-fracture ratio, and permeability begin to increase. This is manifested by the decrease in micropores and mesopores, the increase in macropores, and the formation of a large number of isolated pores and fissures within the shale. The permeability increases but not significantly. The second threshold temperature is between 500 and 600℃,which increases the permeability of oil shale significantly.During this stage, micropores and mesopores are further reduced, and macropores are significantly enlarged.A large number of connected and penetrated pores and fissures are formed.More numerous and thicker streamlines appear inside the oil shale. The experimental results demonstrate that high temperatures significantly alter the microstructure and permeability of oil shale. At the same time, the experimental results can provide a reference for the research of in-situ heating techniques in oil shale reservoir transformation. 展开更多

In this paper,we investigate the impact of coronary artery dynamics on the wall shear stress(WSS)vector field topology by comparing fluid–structure interaction(FSI)and computational fluid dynamics(CFD)techniques. As one of the most common causes of death globally, coronary artery disease(CAD)is a significant economic burden;however, novel approaches are still needed to improve our ability to predict its progression.FSI can include the unique dynamical factors present in the coronary vasculature. To investigate the impact of these dynamical factors,we study an idealized artery model with sequential stenosis. The transient simulations made use of the hyperelastic artery and lipid constitutive equations, non‐Newtonian blood viscosity, and the characteristic out‐of‐phase pressure and velocity distribution of the left anterior descending coronary artery. We compare changes to established metrics of time‐averaged WSS(TAWSS)and the oscillatory shear index(OSI)to changes in the emerging WSS divergence, calculated here in a modified version to handle the deforming mesh of FSI simulations. Results suggest that the motion of the artery can impact downstream patterns in both divergence and OSI.WSS magnitude is also decreased by up to 57%due to motion in some regions.WSS divergence patterns varied most significantly between simulations over the systolic period, the time of the largest displacements. This investigation highlights that coronary dynamics could impact markers of potential CAD progression and warrants further detailed investigations in more diverse geometries and patient cases. 展开更多

The formation of segregated structure has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for achieving ex-ceptional electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding performance at low filler loadings. However, the acquisition of polymer particles and the formation of interactions with conductive fillers remain signifi-cant challenges for polydimethylsiloxane, which are crucial to the construction of a segregated structure. In this work,MXene sheets were functionalized and assembled onto the surface of polydimethylsilox-ane microspheres via hydrophobic interaction.Subsequently, functionalized MXene/polydimethylsiloxane(FMP)composites with a segregated structure were fabricated by filtration and hot-pressing.The FMP composite containing 8.22 wt.%MXene exhibited a high electrical conductivity of 99.4 S m^(−1)and a sat-isfactory EMI shielding effectiveness/thickness(EMI SE/d)of 31.3 dB mm^(−1).Furthermore,the FMP com-posite demonstrated excellent reliability with over 90%retention of EMI shielding effectiveness under harsh environments such as ultra-high/low temperatures and acidic/alkaline solutions.Additionally, the photothermal conversion performance of FMP composites and the capacitive sensing performance of the sensor based on FMP composites indicated their potential for managing body temperature and moni-toring human movement.Consequently,FMP composites show great promise in wearable electronics for effective electromagnetic interference shielding, thermal management and capacitive sensing. 展开更多

Journal bearings are important parts to keep the high dynamic performance of rotor machinery. Some methods have already been proposed to analysis the flow field of journal bearings, and in most of these methods simplified physical model and classic Reynolds equation are always applied. While the application of the general computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-fluid structure interaction (FSI) techniques is more beneficial for analysis of the fluid field in a journal bearing when more detailed solutions are needed. This paper deals with the quasi-coupling calculation of transient fluid dynamics of oil film in journal bearings and rotor dynamics with CFD-FSI techniques. The fluid dynamics of oil film is calculated by applying the so-called "dynamic mesh" technique. A new mesh movement approacb is presented while the dynamic mesh models provided by FLUENT are not suitable for the transient oil flow in journal bearings. The proposed mesh movement approach is based on the structured mesh. When the joumal moves, the movement distance of every grid in the flow field of bearing can be calculated, and then the update of the volume mesh can be handled automatically by user defined function (UDF). The journal displacement at each time step is obtained by solving the moving equations of the rotor-bearing system under the known oil film force condition. A case study is carried out to calculate the locus of the journal center and pressure distribution of the journal in order to prove the feasibility of this method. The calculating results indicate that the proposed method can predict the transient flow field of a journal bearing in a rotor-bearing system where more realistic models are involved. The presented calculation method provides a basis for studying the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a general rotor-bearing system. 展开更多

The existing research for unsteady flow field and the corresponding flow induced vibration analysis of centrifugal pump are mainly carried out respectively without considering the interaction between fluid and structure. The ignorance of fluid structure interaction(FSI)means that the energy transfer between fluid and structure is neglected. To some extent, the accuracy and reliability of unsteady flow and rotor deflection analysis should be affected by this interaction mechanism. In this paper,a combined calculation between two executables for turbulent flow and vibrating structure was established using two-way coupling method to study the effect of FSI.Pressure distributions, radial forces, rotor deflection and equivalent stress are analyzed. The results show that the FSI effect to pressure distribution in flow field is complex. The pressure distribution is affected not only around impeller outlet where different variation trends of pressure values with and without FSI appear according to different relative positions between blade and cutwater, but also in the diffusion section of volute.Variation trends of peak values of radial force amplitude calculated with and without FSI are nearly same under high flow rate and designed conditions while the peak value with FSI is slightly smaller, and differently, the peak value with FSI is larger with low flow rate.In addition, the effect of FSI on the angle of radial force is quite complex, especially under 0.5Q condition.Fluctuation of radial deflection of the rotor has obvious four periods,of which the extent is relatively small under design condition and is relatively large under off-design condition. Finally, fluctuations of equivalent stress with time are obvious under different conditions, and stress value is small. The proposed research establishes the FSI calculation method for centrifugal pump analysis, and ensures the existing affect by fluid structure interaction. 展开更多

Tension leg platform (TLP) for offshore wind turbine support is a new type structure in wind energy utilization. The strong-interaction method is used in analyzing the coupled model, and the dynamic characteristics of the TLP for offshore wind turbine support are recognized. As shown by the calculated results: for the lower modes, the shapes are water's vibration, and the vibration of water induces the structure's swing; the mode shapes of the structure are complex, and can largely change among different members; the mode shapes of the platform are related to the tower's. The frequencies of the structure do not change much after adjusting the length of the tension cables and the depth of the platform; the TLP has good adaptability for the water depths and the environment loads. The change of the size and parameters of TLP can improve the dynamic characteristics, which can reduce the vibration of the TLP caused by the loads. Through the vibration analysis, the natural vibration frequencies of TLP can be distinguished from the frequencies of condition loads, and thus the resonance vibration can be avoided, therefore the offshore wind turbine can work normally in the complex conditions. 展开更多

An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE)approach with interface tracking is developed in this paper to simulate the supersonic parachute inflation.A two-way interaction between a nonlinear finite element method and a finite volume method is accomplished. In order to apply this interface tracking method to problems with instantaneous large deformation and self-contact,a new virtual structure contact method is proposed to leave room for the body-fitted mesh between the contact structural surfaces. In addition, the breakpoint due to the fluid mesh with negative volume is losslessly restarted by the conservative interpolation method.Based on this method, fluid and structural dynamic behaviors of a highly folded disk-gap-band parachute are obtained.Numerical results such as maximum Root Mean Square(RMS)drag, general canopy shape and the smallest canopy projected areas in the terminal descent state are in accordance with the wind tunnel test results. This analysis reveals the inflation law of the disk-gap-band parachute and provides a new numerical method for supersonic parachute design. 展开更多

Based on the working principle and the damping characteristic of hydraulic shock absorber, a fluid structure interaction method was presented, which was used to analyze the microcosmic and high-frequency processing mechanism of fluid structure interaction between circulation valve and liquid of hydraulic shock absorber. The fluid mesh distortion was controlled by the CEL language, and the fluid struc^tre interaction mathematical model was established. The finite element model was established by ANSYS CFX software and was analyzed by dynamic mesh technique. The local sensitive computational area was meshed by prismatic grid, which could reduce the negative volume problem during the simulation. The circulation valve and liquid of hydraulic shock absorber were simulated and analyzed under the condition of sinusoidal inlet velocity loads. Flow characteristic and dynamics characteristic were obtained. The pressure distribution and the displacement of circulation value were obtained, and the acceleration curve of circulation valve was simulated and analyzed. The conformity of the final simulation results with the experimental datum indicates that this method is accurate and reliable to analyze the dynamics characteristic between circulation valve and liquid of hydraulic shock absorber, which can provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing hydraulic shock absorber in the future. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to develop, as well as validate the strongly coupled method (two-way fluid structural interaction (FSI)) used to simulate the transient FSI response of the vertical axis tidal turbine (VATT) rotor, subjected to spatially varying inflow. Moreover, this study examined strategies on improving techniques used for mesh deformation that account for large displacement or deformation calculations. The blade's deformation for each new time step is considered in transient two-way FSI analysis, to make the design more reliable. Usually this is not considered in routine one-way FSI simulations. A rotor with four blades and 4-m diameter was modeled and numerically analyzed. We observed that two-way FSI, utilizing the strongly coupled method, was impossible for a complex model; and thereby using ANSYS-CFX and ANSYS-MECHANICAL in work bench, as given in ANSYS-WORKBENCH, helped case examples 22 and 23, by giving an error when the solution was run. To make the method possible and reduce the computational power, a novel technique was used to transfer the file in ANSYS-APDL to obtain the solution and results. Consequently, the results indicating a two-way transient FSI analysis is a time- and resource-consuming job, but with our proposed technique we can reduce the computational time. The ANSYS STRUCTURAL results also uncover that stresses and deformations have higher values for two-way FSI as compared to one-way FSI. Similarly, fluid flow CFX results for two-way FSI are closer to experimental results as compared to one-way simulation results. Additionally, this study shows that, using the proposed method we can perform coupled simulation with simple multi-node PCs (core i5). 展开更多

This article introduces a numerical scheme on the basis of semi-implicit method for pressure-linked equations (SIMPLE) algorithm to simulate incompressible unsteady flows with fluid-structure interaction. The Navier-Stokes equation is discretized spatially with collocated finite volume method and Eulerian implicit method in time domain. The hybrid method that combines immersed boundary method (IBM) and volume of fluid (VOF) method is used to deal with rigid body motion in fluid domain. The details of movement of immersed boundary (IB) and calculation of VOF are also described. This method can be easily applied to any existing finite-volume-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver without complex operation, with which fluid flow interaction of arbitrarily complex geometry can be realized on a fixed mesh. The method is verified by low Reynolds number flows passing both stationary and oscillating cylinders. The drag and lift coefficients acquired by the study well accord with other published results, which indicate the reasonability of the proposed method. 展开更多

Numerical simulations of evolution characteristics of slug flow across a 90°pipe bend have been carried out to study the fluid−structure interaction response induced by internal slug flow. The two-phase flow patterns and turbulence were modelled by using the volume of fluid(VOF)model and the Realizable k−εturbulence model respectively.Firstly, validation of the CFD model was carried out and the desirable results were obtained. The different flow patterns and the time-average mean void fraction was coincident with the reported experimental data.Simulations of different cases of slug flow have been carried out to show the effects of superficial gas and liquid velocity on the evolution characteristics of slug flow. Then,a one-way coupled fluid-structure interaction framework was established to investigate the slug flow interaction with a 90°pipe bend under various superficial liquid and gas velocities. It was found that the maximum total deformation and equivalent stress increased with the increasing superficial gas velocity, while decreased with the increasing superficial liquid velocity. In addition, the total deformation and equivalent stress has obvious periodic fluctuation.Furthermore, the distribution position of maximum deformation and stress was related to the evolution of slug flow. With the increasing superficial gas velocity, the maximum total deformation was mainly located at the 90°pipe bend. But as the superficial liquid velocity increases, the maximum total deformation was mainly located in the horizontal pipe section.Consequently, the slug flow with higher superficial gas velocity will induce more serious cyclical impact on the 90°pipe bend. 展开更多
