High concentrations of T–Hg and Me Hg were found in these multiple matrices, and the mean concentration was 30.7 ng/m3 of T–Hg for atmosphere samples, 3.1 μg/g of T–Hg for soil, 37.6 μg/g of T–Hg for dust, 20.3 ng/g of Me Hg for rice and 178.1 ng/g of Me Hg for fish, suggesting that the e-waste recycling facility was a significant source of Hg. The inorganic Hg(I–Hg) levels(0.84 μg/g) in hair samples of e-waste workers were much higher than that in the reference samples. Pearson's correlation coefficients showed that strong positive correlations(p 〈 0.01) between hair I–Hg and time staying in industrial area(r = 0.81) and between Me Hg and fish consumption frequency(r = 0.91), imply that workers were mainly exposed to Hg vapor through long-time inhalation of contaminated air and dust, while other population mainly exposed to Me Hg through high-frequency fish consumption. The estimated daily intakes of Hg showed that dietary intake was the major Hg exposure source, and Hg intakes from rice and fish were significantly higher than from any other foods. The estimated total daily intakes(TDIs) of Me Hg for both children(696.8 ng/(kg·day)) and adults(381.3 ng/(kg·day)) greatly exceeded the dietary reference dose(Rf D) of 230 ng/(kg·day),implying greater health risk for humans from Hg exposures around e-waste recycling facilities.展开更多

Methods A case-control study was conducted through a questionnaire with 108 ASD cases, 79 ID cases, and 108 controls. The ASD and ID cases were students from special educational schools in Tianjin from 2012 to 2014. The age- and sex-matched controls were from a high school, three primary schools, and a kindergarten in Tianjin. Multivariate logistic regression was performed. Results Paternal habit of eating hairtail before fertilization, maternal preference for fruits during pregnancy, and maternal habit of eating grass carp during pregnancy were preventive factors for ASD. Paternal habit of drinking alcohol before fertilization was a risk factor for ID, whereas maternal preference for fruits during pregnancy and maternal habit of eating crucian carp during pregnancy were protective factors for ID. Conclusion Parental fish consumption is beneficial for the prevention of ASD and ID. Meanwhile, the protective effects of fish consumption on ASD and ID differ. More attention should be paid to the combined effect of other food when eating fish.展开更多

Geospatial mapping is a location based study and is a part of intelligence GIS which is expected to be useful tool for fisheries scientists, aquatic resource managers and policy planners in developing and planning strategies for fisheries resources of the country. In this context, a study was performed where mapping of fisheries profile of West Bengal was carried out using GIS tool having critical geographic dimensions. For this purpose, at the core of the system fisheries data of West Bengal were accessed and integrated from different sources at district level. Data were tabulated using Microsoft Excel and then joined to digitize Map of West Bengal to enable mapping using Arc info 9.3 GIS software. This was further synchronized and integrated to generate four thematic maps based on different criteria. The map dealing with fisher folk population and their occupation contains the searchable criteria as regards to the fishermen population as well as their classified categories according to their occupation. The map dealing with West Bengal fish production contains fish production, fish seed production district-wise and growth rate for 2004-2008. The third map contains district-wise water resources and reservoir areas along with brackish water. With this mapped information, planners and various stakeholders will have readily accessible district level data on various components of fisheries of West Bengal, thereby facilitating better planning, management and development of the fisheries sector.展开更多

Over 20 million cubic meters of fine particles from the tailings, as well as scoured soil and sediments, reached the Rio Doce estuary and surrounding marine area 17 days later. Fishing was banned by the Federal Court of Espírito Santo in February 2016. The fishing ban area included the coastal area near the mouth of the Rio Doce and seaward to a depth of 25 meters, south to Barra do Riacho, and north to Degredo Beach. In June 2019, the Brazilian health agency, Anvisa, published a risk assessment for fish consumption which recommended daily consumption limits for fish of 200 grams for adults and 50 grams for children for both continental and coastal areas of the Rio Doce basin. Comparative analyses were performed between metal concentrations in marine fish and crustaceans collected in the banned fishing area to reference areas and commercialized seafood markets along the Brazilian coast. The results reveal that metals detected in seafood tissue collected in the fishing ban area are not significantly different than other reference areas or from commercially available seafood. This result indicates that elevated metal concentrations in seafood are a regional problem, unrelated to the Event. Higher concentrations of metals in fish in reference areas outside of the fishing ban area as well as in commercial seafood markets demonstrates that the risk management approach of a localized fishing ban is ineffective for reducing risk to the population related to seafood consumption. .展开更多
