This study examines the predictive roles of foreign language classroom anxiety(FLCA),foreign language enjoyment(FLE),and foreign language boredom(FLB)in English achievement among Chinese senior high school students.Despite extensive research on anxiety in language learning, less attention has been given to boredom, and the combined effects of these three emotions on English achievement remain under-explored,particularly among high school students in China. To address these gaps,a sample of 142 students from Guangzhou was surveyed using questionnaires to assess their emotional experiences and English achievement. The research found that FLE exhibited a positive correlation with academic performance, while FLCA and FLB showed negative associations.Notably,FLE was the most significant predictor of English achievement, followed by FLCA and FLB.Gender differences were observed, with male students reporting significantly higher levels of environmental enjoyment, while female students experienced significantly greater communication anxiety. On this basis, this paper offers suggestions on how to enhance senior high school students’FLE while mitigating FLCA and FLB,thereby promoting more effective and sustained English learning. 展开更多

Introduction: Foreign bodies (FB) in the lower airways (LAs) constitute a potentially life-threatening emergency requiring immediate management. The objective of our study was to describe the patient pathway and management of foreign bodies in the lower airways. Methodology: This was a descriptive study with retrospective data collection conducted over a 6-year period (January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2019) in the ENT and Head and Neck Surgery Department of Donka National Hospital. Results: We observed a prevalence of 1.79%. The average age was 5.71 years, with a sex ratio of 1.2. However, 82.61% of the cases originated from rural areas. We noted that 78.83% of patients were referred after visiting 1 to 2 healthcare facilities (75.36%). The consultation delay was 3 days. Penetration syndrome was present in 98.56% of cases. The foreign body incidents occurred during play in 54.84% and during meals in 29.09% of cases. Radiographs were performed in 93.9% of cases. Endoscopy was used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in all patients. The foreign bodies were located in the trachea (37.68%), larynx (26.08%), and bronchi (21.73%). Non-organic foreign bodies were predominant (52.17%). Postoperative outcomes were uncomplicated in 95.98% of cases, and the lethality rate was 2.85%. Conclusion: The pathway of patients with foreign bodies in the airways remains unpredictable in our context due to parental hesitations. Early management reduces morbidity and mortality rates. 展开更多

A foreign body, whatever its nature, is often involved in its genesis. To date, there is very little data on foreign body conjunctival granulomas, the prevalence would be approximately 10% and their underestimation is probably linked to the inconsistency of their clinical presentation. Patient and Observations: We report a case of conjunctival granuloma caused by a metallic foreign body that went unnoticed in a young boy, the interest of rigor on primary protection measures for high-risk occupations, and of the strict application of the diagnostic protocol relating to ocular trauma. Discussion: foreign body granulomas, despite their usually harmless nature, can jeopardize the anatomical and functional prognosis of the affected eye. Only a detailed interview and a meticulous clinical examination allow the diagnosis to be made and the distinction to be made with conjunctival granulomas of different causes. Conclusion: the possibility of the involvement of a foreign body in the genesis of conjunctival granulomas must impose the rigorous application of diagnostic and therapeutic protocols. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal foreign bodies represent a significant clinical challenge in em-ergency and surgical settings. While accidental ingestion predominates in healthy adults, intentional ingestion is frequently observed in pediatric, psychiatric, and incarcerated populations.Metallic sewing needles, characterized by their sharp morphology and high mobility, pose particular risks of visceral injury and com-plications due to their penetrative potential.Although preoperative imaging facilitates initial localization, subsequent migration of multiple needles com-plicates therapeutic interventions, increasing procedural complexity and patient risk.CASE SUMMARY We present a novel application of magnetic-assisted localization in managing a complex case of intentional ingestion of 30 metallic sewing needles in a psy-chiatric patient. The widespread distribution of needles throughout the gas-trointestinal tract necessitated an innovative surgical approach.Intraoperative implementation of cylindrical magnetic localization technology enabled precise identification and successful extraction of all foreign bodies while minimizing tissue trauma.CONCLUSION Magnetic-assisted localization represents an effective and safe technique to manage multiple magnetic gastrointestinal foreign bodies. This approach offers significant advantages in complex cases, particularly for needle-like metallic objects, and warrants consideration as a valuable tool in gastrointestinal surgery. 展开更多

Foreign body ingestion is a common gastrointestinal emergency, particularly in children, who account for 80%of cases. While most ingested objects pass spontan-eously,around 20%require medical intervention. In adults, incidents often occur accidentally during meals, leading to impactions, especially in individuals with underlying esophageal conditions.Endoscopy remains the gold standard for foreign body retrieval, with a success rate exceeding 95%.The type, shape, and location of the foreign body determine the clinical presentation and management approach.Sharp objects, batteries, and large items pose the highest risk of complications, including perforation, obstruction, and chemical injury.Prompt endoscopic removal is guided by established protocols, with emergent inter-vention required for complete esophageal obstruction and high-risk objects.Various retrieval devices, including forceps, snares, baskets, and overtubes, are used based on the nature of the foreign body.Technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence-assisted imaging and endoscopic ultrasound, are impro-ving diagnostic precision and procedural outcomes.Despite these advances, foreign body ingestion can still lead to severe complications if not managed in a timely manner.Public awareness, preventive measures, and rapid medical res-ponse are essential in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with foreign body ingestion. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Acute abdominal pain is often easy to be diagnosed because of acute abdomen, and can be treated reasonably and effectively. It is more difficult to establish the cause of chronic abdominal pain, and some patients repeatedly visit several hos-pitals and still cannot be diagnosed.Chronic abdominal pain caused by chronic appendicitis is such a case.If the degree of abdominal pain is mild and there is no sign of peritonitis, chronic appendicitis is not performed unless the patient re-quests it.CASE SUMMARY We report an extremely rare case of chronic appendicitis caused by a foreign body in the appendix in a 35-year-old woman. The patient had a long-term abdominal pain of unclear cause, and she was repeatedly treated in several hospitals. After antibiotic treatment, the abdominal pain was gradually relieved, but abdominal pain often recurs. We conducted abdominal computed tomography examination, and upon the advice of radiologists,we considered the possibility of foreign bodies in the appendix, and excluded other causes of abdominal pain. The patient requested and consented to laparoscopic appendectomy, and a chicken bone was found in the appendiceal cavity by postoperative incision of the appendiceal spe-cimen.Histopathological examination confirmed chronic appendicitis with fo-reign body giant cell reaction. The patient recovered and was discharged from the hospital. After 2 months of follow-up,abdominal pain did not recur, and the patient had a complete recovery.Core Tip:We report an extremely rare case of chronic appendicitis caused by a chicken bone in the appendix. The patient was 35-year-old woman, and had a long-term abdominal pain of unknown cause.Abdominal computed tomography examination suggested foreign bodies in the appendix, and laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. The postoperative specimen revealed chicken bones in the appendix cavity, and histopathological examination confirmed chronic appendicitis with giant cell reaction of foreign bodies. The patient recovered and was followed up for two months without abdominal pain.Citation:Huang T,Li SK,Wang W,Zhang R.Chronic abdominal pain caused by foreign bodies in the appendix:A case report.World INTRODUCTION Appendicitis is one of the common diseases that cause abdominal pain[1].Appendicitis can be diagnosed and treated effectively when patients with acute abdominal pain are admitted to hospital because of factors such as blockage and infection of appendicitis[2,3].However,the diagnosis of chronic appendicitis is difficult.Acute appendicitis caused by foreign bodies in the appendix is easy to diagnose because of the final surgical treatment[4-6],while chronic appendicitis caused by foreign bodies in the appendix is more difficult to diagnose because of the mild degree of abdominal pain.We here report an extremely rare case of chronic appendicitis caused by foreign bodies in the appendix. The patient had a long-term abdominal pain of unclear cause, and she was repeatedly treated in several hospitals.Abdominal color ultrasound examination indicated a coprolith in the appendiceal cavity and the appendix was normal,so the patient could not be treated with surgery. We conducted abdominal computed tomography(CT)examination, and upon the advice of radiologists,we considered the possibility of foreign bodies in the appendix, and excluded other causes of abdominal pain. The patient requested and consented to laparoscopic appendectomy, and a chicken bone was found in the appendiceal cavity by postoperative incision of the appendiceal specimen. The patient recovered and was discharged from hospital. After 2 months of follow-up,abdominal pain did not recur and the patient had a full recovery. 展开更多

The optimal allocation of foreign resources requires a minimum level of domestic development, including financial development to benefit from the potential benefits of foreign direct investment. This study discusses the mediating role of financial development in the effect of foreign direct investment on economic growth and establishes the banking sector threshold for the 18 least developed African countries over the period 2000 to 2020.We used the generalized method of moments(GMM)and the threshold regression(TR)as part of the dynamic panel data model. The results show the non-significant contribution of foreign direct investment and the banking sector to economic growth. After interaction, the effect of foreign direct investment becomes positive but not significant. However, the coefficient of the interaction variable is significantly negative. This implies that the financial system is unable to allocate foreign resources efficiently. For this reason, this paper resorted to applying the threshold regression to determine the minimum threshold of the banking sector and established a threshold of 74.58%.It therefore becomes necessary for the 18 least developed African countries to develop the financial system in order to get full benefits of foreign direct investment. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Foreign body ingestion is a common emergency in clinical practice. While the majority of cases are resolved following successful removal, rare and unexpected complications can arise, such as the spontaneous displacement of a foreign body during the procedure. This report describes a unique case where a foreign body initially lodged in the esophagus was dropped during the procedure, leading to aspiration and migration to the airway.CASE SUMMARY A 69-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 6-hour history of throat pain and tightness after consuming rabbit meat. She had no fever or bloody stools but had a history of hypertension.Initial imaging, including a neck computed tomography scan, indicated a foreign body in the upper esophagus.Esophageal endoscopy was performed, during which the patient’s vital signs remained stable. The procedure showed a 14-cm mucosal erosion with food debris and a visible foreign body located in the gastric fundus. The foreign body was removed with forceps but unexpectedly dropped into the hypopharynx.Subsequent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy did not identify the foreign body.On awakening from anesthesia, the patient exhibited hypoxia and coarse breath sounds, but without coughing.A chest X-ray indicated that the foreign body had migrated into the airway. An emergency fiberoptic bronchoscopy was performed, successfully retrieving the foreign body. The patient recovered without complications.CONCLUSION Endoscopic removal of an esophageal foreign body can cause silent aspiration in elderly patients with absent cough reflexes, necessitating bedside imaging and prompt intervention. 展开更多
