Everyday Use is the best of essays written by Alice Walker,a very famous African American woman novelist. In this essay, two sisters from Africa-American family give us a deep impression.Although they are sisters,Maggie and Dee are different. With a concept of structuralism:binary opposition, this article shows the two sisters:Maggie and Dee have different natures, appearances and the views for the quilt. However, with their attitudes to the quilt analyzed by deconstructionism:breaking the binary opposition, the two sisters are identical:both of them regard the quilt as the rare material. Finally, this thesis points out an insufficiency of the essay. 展开更多

It is well known that Everyday Use is considered as one of the greatest stories of the contemporary African-American female culture. Seemly it tells the conflicts among the mother, Maggie and Dee about the quilts after Dee's coming home. But its real intention is discussing African-Americans' worries about their cultural heritages. The mother is devoid of the spirit of resistance and confidence. Dee actually does not love her culture and knows little of her culture. Maggie is also lack of confidence and can't struggle for herself and her culture. Therefore, they are not real inheritors of their own culture. 展开更多

"Everyday Use" is well-known story written by Alice Walker, who is a very famous black female writer. This paper will focus on using the decontructionism strategy to dismantle the binary oppositions of the story. The binary oppositions are "Pretty VS. Ugly, Civilized VS. Unenlightened, Hang VS. Use and The Mainstream Culture VS. Non-mainstream Culture". By analyzing, the paper concludes that no culture can be defeated and each culture needs to be passed on. Everyday Use is regarded as Alice Walker's best-written short story. The prevailing opinion among the critics about this story is that Dee is the traitor of black American's cultural heritage, and the mother and Maggie are the hope of true value of the African Americans' tradition and heritage; however, after considering the historical and cultural background of the story, we may safely come to the conclusion that Dee actually took the first step toward the awakening of self-consciousness of the African Americans women. 展开更多

This article explores the intersections of Buddhism,Daoism, and contemporary French literary practice in the study of the everyday(quotidien).Since the 1980s,French literature has increasingly shifted its focus from the exotic to the mundane, engaging with theoretical frameworks developed by scholars such as Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau.Drawing on Buddhist notions of emptiness and dependent arising,as well as Daoist principles of yin-yang interdependence, the article bridges Eastern and Western philosophies to demonstrate the everyday not as a static or trivial backdrop, but as a dynamic and transformative space. It further examines how representations of daily life in the works of Georges Perec and Jacques Roubaud employ the meticulous documentation of mundane details to uncover hidden patterns, rhythms, and structures of human experience.Through literary fieldwork,Perec and Roubaud challenge conventional perceptions of the everyday, unveiling its depth, complexity, and potential for reinvention. 展开更多

Owen McCafferty’s Quietly(2012),a two-hander set in an Irish pub, explores how the Troubles continue to shape everyday life in Northern Ireland-an aspect often overlooked in official narratives that celebrate the success of the peace process. The presence of an immigrant character and modern communication devices in the traditional Irish pub setting signifies a new phase of Northern Irish society following the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. However, the tense and fragmented conversation between the protagonists, along with their sense of disorientation, reveals the persistence of sectarian divisions and the paralysis of everyday life, which,in turn, reinforce narrow conceptions of identity and lead to the ongoing cycle of violence.By bringing the two protagonists together to confront their past and jointly recount the most devastating day of their lives under the witness of a third party,McCafferty presents the possibility of transcending decades of division at the everyday level, suggesting that true peace requires not only political agreements but also open dialogue between opposing sides and a renewal of values through the enrichment of individual lived experiences. 展开更多
