Weibull function is flexible, and has been used in characterising diameter distributions, especially in single-species planted stands, the world over. We evaluated some Weibull parameter estimation methods for stem diameter characterisation in (Oban) multi-species Forest in southern Nigeria. Four study sites (Aking, Ekang, Erokut and Ekuri) were selected. Four 2 km-long transects situated at 600 m apart were laid in each location. Five 50m x 50m plots were alternately laid along each transect at 400 m apart (20 plots/location) using systematic sampling technique. Tree growth variables: diameter at breast height (Dbh), diameters at the base, middle and merchantable limit, total height, merchantable height, stem straightness, crown length and crown diameter were measured on all trees 〉 10 cm to compute model response variables such as mean diameters, basal area and stem volume. Weibull parameters estimation methods used were: moment-based, percentile-based, hybrid and maximum-likelihood (ML). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, regression models and ANOVA at α0.05. Percentile-based method was the best for Weibull [location (a), scale (b) and shape (c)] parameters estimations with mLogL = 116.66±21.89, while hybrid method was least-suitable (mLogL = 690.14±128.81) for Weibull parameters estimations. Quadratic mean diameter (Dq) was the only suitable predictor of Weibull parameters in Oban Forest.展开更多

The estimation methods of reproduction numbers and serial intervals are important in the early stages of infectious diseases.During the COVID pandemic,China implemented a dynamic zero-COVID policy on the Chinese mainl...The estimation methods of reproduction numbers and serial intervals are important in the early stages of infectious diseases.During the COVID pandemic,China implemented a dynamic zero-COVID policy on the Chinese mainland until the end of 2022.This study compares three estimation methods of basic repro-duction numbers on small-scale,short-duration COVID-19 epidemics in Fujian Province.Basic reproduc-tion numbers were investigated using a varying-strain model via a next-generation matrix method.Serial intervals were derived using the infector-infectee pairs of two epidemics from the Fujian Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.Basic reproduction numbers were estimated using the maxi-mum likelihood estimation method and the exponential growth method.The curves of the effective reproduction numbers of the three epidemics were plotted by utilizing daily cases and the EpiEstim R package.The spatial heterogeneity of infection cases was described using the Gini coefficient.This study provides significant insights on the estimation methods of reproduction numbers for policymakers in the local government.The results reveal that social contacts between infectors and susceptible individuals should be reduced to avoid an increase in deaths and to fight against the spread of infectious diseases.展开更多

However, cropland nitrate leaching estimates show great uncertainty due to variations in input datasets and estimation methods. Here, we presented a re-evaluation of Chinese cropland nitrate leaching, and identified and quantified the sources of uncertainty by integrating three cropland area datasets, three N input datasets, and three estimation methods. The results revealed that nitrate leaching from Chinese cropland averaged 6.7±0.6 Tg N yr^(-1)in 2010, ranging from 2.9 to 15.8 Tg N yr^(-1)across 27 different estimates. The primary contributor to the uncertainty was the estimation method, accounting for 45.1%, followed by the interaction of N input dataset and estimation method at 24.4%. The results of this study emphasize the need for adopting a robust estimation method and improving the compatibility between the estimation method and N input dataset to effectively reduce uncertainty. This analysis provides valuable insights for accurately estimating cropland nitrate leaching and contributes to ongoing efforts that address water pollution concerns.展开更多

The objective of reliability-based design optimization(RBDO)is to minimize the optimization objective while satisfying the corresponding reliability requirements.However,the nested loop characteristic reduces the effi...The objective of reliability-based design optimization(RBDO)is to minimize the optimization objective while satisfying the corresponding reliability requirements.However,the nested loop characteristic reduces the efficiency of RBDO algorithm,which hinders their application to high-dimensional engineering problems.To address these issues,this paper proposes an efficient decoupled RBDO method combining high dimensional model representation(HDMR)and the weight-point estimation method(WPEM).First,we decouple the RBDO model using HDMR and WPEM.Second,Lagrange interpolation is used to approximate a univariate function.Finally,based on the results of the first two steps,the original nested loop reliability optimization model is completely transformed into a deterministic design optimization model that can be solved by a series of mature constrained optimization methods without any additional calculations.Two numerical examples of a planar 10-bar structure and an aviation hydraulic piping system with 28 design variables are analyzed to illustrate the performance and practicability of the proposed method.展开更多

The Three-River Headwater Region(TRHR), known as the "Water Tower of China", is an important ecological shelter for national security interests and regional sustainable development activities for many downstream r...The Three-River Headwater Region(TRHR), known as the "Water Tower of China", is an important ecological shelter for national security interests and regional sustainable development activities for many downstream regions in China and a number of Southeast Asian countries. The TRHR is a high-elevation, cold environment with a unique, but typical alpine vegetation system. Net primary productivity(NPP) is a key vegetation parameter and ecological indicator that can reflect both natural environmental changes and carbon budget levels. Given the unique geographical environment and strategic location of the TRHR, many scholars have estimated NPP of the TRHR by using different methods; however, these estimates vary greatly for a number of reasons. To date, there is no paper that has reviewed and assessed NPP estimation studies conducted in the TRHR. Therefore, in this paper, we(1) summarized the related methods and results of NPP estimation in the TRHR in a systematic review of previous research;(2) discussed the suitability of existing methods for estimating NPP in the TRHR and highlighted the most significant challenges; and(3) assessed the estimated NPP results. However, to date, little attention has been paid to the state estimation for systems in which the process noise and the measurement noise are both modeled as the heavy-tailed and skew non-Gaussian noise. In this paper, the multivariate skew t distribution is utilized to model the heavy-tailed and skew non-Gaussian noise. Then a probabilistic graphical form of the multivariate skew t distribution is given and proved. Based on the probabilistic graphical form, a hierarchical Gaussian state space model for stochastic uncertain systems is proposed, which transforms the estimation problem for systems with the heavy-tailed and skew non-Gaussian noises into the one with a hierarchical Gaussian state space model. Next, given the designed Gaussian state space model, the robust Bayesian filter and smoother based on the variational Bayesian inference are proposed to approximately estimate the system state and the unknown noise parameters. Furthermore, the complexity analysis together with the controllability and observability for stochastic uncertain systems with multivariate skew t noises is given. Finally,the simulation results of the target tracking scenario verify the validity of the proposed algorithms.展开更多
Forest evapotranspiration(ET),a core process of water vapor exchange between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere,is crucial for global carbon and water cycles and ecosystem stability.However,its high-precision estima...Forest evapotranspiration(ET),a core process of water vapor exchange between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere,is crucial for global carbon and water cycles and ecosystem stability.However,its high-precision estimation faces challenges arising from complex forest structures and multifactor driving mechanisms.Based on bibliometrics,this study visually analyzed 1,427 relevant papers from the Web of Science Core Collection(2005-2025)to summarize research status,hotspots and frontiers.Results show continuous growth in publications over two decades,peaking during 2017-2022.Journal co-occurrence reveals that Agricultural and Forest Meteorology ranks first,contributing 212 papers and 10,438 total citations with an average of 49.24 cites per article.The Chinese Academy of Sciences,University of CAS and USDA form a close collaboration network led by 279 core authors.Hotspots concentrate on eddy covariance(460 occurrences),remote sensing inversion(134)and machine learning(124,rapidly rising since 2017).Eddy covariance remains the“gold standard”;remote sensing breaks spatiotemporal limits by integrating multi-source data;machine learning,exhibiting the greatest advances,improves accuracy by 45%in complex environments(burst intensity 17.91 since 2017),promoting hybrid“physical mechanism+data-driven”models.Research evolved through three stages:traditional observation dominance(2005-2010),physical model optimization(2010-2016),and intelligent algorithm innovation(2017-present),with applications spanning ecological assessment and water resource management.展开更多

Considering the disadvantages and limitation of exist- ing estimation methods, a new approach based on the shadow area percentage (SAP) that can be used to quantify surface roughness is proposed in this article. Firstly, by the help of laser scanning technique, the three-dimensional model of the surface of rock discontinuity was established. Secondly, a light source was simulated, and there would be some shadows produced on the model surface. Thirdly, to obtain the value of SAP of each specimen, the shadow detection technique was introduced for use. Fourthly, compared with the result from direct shear testing and based on statistics, an empirical for- mula was found among SAP, normal stress, and shear strength. Data of Yujian (~ River were used as an example, and the following conclusions have been made. (1) In the case of equal normal stress, the peak shear stress is positively proportional to the SAP. (2) The formula for estimating was derived, and the predictions of peak-shear strength made with this equation well agreed with the experimental re- suits obtained in laboratory tests.展开更多

In addition, aiming at the ill-posed problem of the coefficient matrix, we also propose the ridge estimation iterative solution of ill-posed mixed additive and multiplicative random error model with equality constraints based on the principle of ridge estimation method and derive the U-curve method to determine the ridge parameter. The experimental results show that the weighted least squares iterative solution can obtain more reasonable parameter estimation and precision information than existing solutions, verifying the feasibility of applying the equality constraints to the mixed additive and multiplicative random error model. Furthermore, the ridge estimation iterative solution can obtain more accurate parameter estimation and precision information than the weighted least squares iterative solution.展开更多

In the gravitational stress field,the rocks in the shallow area are in an elastic state and the deep,relatively soft rock may be in a plastic state. However,in the tectonic stress field,the relatively soft rock in the shallow area is in a plastic state and the deep rock in an elastic state. A method is proposed to estimate stress values in coal and soft rock based on in-situ measurements of hard rock. Our estimation method relates to the type of stress field and stress state. The equations of rock stress in various stress states are presented for the elastic,plastic and critical states. The critical state is a special stress state,which indicates the conversion of the elastic to the plastic state in the gravitational stress field and the conversion of the plastic to the elastic state in the tectonic stress field. With few available soil organic carbon(SOC)profiles and the heterogeneity of those that do exist, the estimation of SOC pools in karst areas is highly uncertain.Based on the spatial heterogeneity of SOC content of 23,...With few available soil organic carbon(SOC)profiles and the heterogeneity of those that do exist, the estimation of SOC pools in karst areas is highly uncertain.Based on the spatial heterogeneity of SOC content of 23,536 samples in a karst watershed, a modified estimation method was determined for SOC storage that exclusively applies to karst areas. The method is a "soil-type method" based on revised calculation indexes for SOC storage. In the present study, the organic carbon contents of different soil types varied greatly, but generally decreased with increasing soil depth. The organic carbon content decreased nearly linearly to a depth of 0–50 cm and then varied at depths of 50–100 cm. Because of the large spatial variability in the karst area, we were able to determine that influences of the different indexes on the estimation of SOC storage decreased as follows: soil thickness > boulder content > rock fragment content > SOC content > bulk density. Using the modified formula, the SOC content in the Houzhai watershed in Puding was estimated to range from 3.53 to 5.44 kg m^(-2), with an average value of 1.24 kg m^(-2) to a depth of 20 cm, and from 4.44 to 14.50 kg m^(-2), with an average value of 12.12 kg m^(-2) to a depth of 100 cm. The total SOC content was estimated at 5.39*10^(5) t.展开更多

Based on the principle of conservative matter removal in estuary,a new method is proposed for estimating the ratio of sediment resuspension in estuaries with fine suspended sediments in the turbidity maximum zone(TMZ)...Based on the principle of conservative matter removal in estuary,a new method is proposed for estimating the ratio of sediment resuspension in estuaries with fine suspended sediments in the turbidity maximum zone(TMZ) of the Changjiang(Yangtze) estuary during 2005.Results show that there was a range of 18.7%±27.9% to 73.9%±22.5% per annum of total suspended particulate matter(SPM),with an average of 49.2%.Nearly half of the particulate matter in the TMZ originates from sediment resuspension.This indicates that sediment resuspension is one of the major mechanisms involved in formation of the TMZ.Compared with traditional method for calculating these ratios in the estuary,this new method evaluates the dynamic variation of SPM content carried by river runoff from the river mouth to the ocean.The new method produced more reliable results than the traditional one and could produce a better estimation of resuspension flux for particulate matter in estuaries.展开更多

Some experiments on the wave-current force on inclined cylinders are also described and the wave current force coefficients are estimated by the revised cross-spectrum estimation method. From the results, it is found that the wave and current directions have some regular effect on the coefficients. According to the results, some empirical formulas are obtained for converting the wave-current force coefficients on inclined cylinders into a unified coefficient. Comparisons show that the unified coefficients are in good agreement with other results.展开更多

文摘The objective of reliability-based design optimization(RBDO)is to minimize the optimization objective while satisfying the corresponding reliability requirements.However,the nested loop characteristic reduces the efficiency of RBDO algorithm,which hinders their application to high-dimensional engineering problems.To address these issues,this paper proposes an efficient decoupled RBDO method combining high dimensional model representation(HDMR)and the weight-point estimation method(WPEM).First,we decouple the RBDO model using HDMR and WPEM.Second,Lagrange interpolation is used to approximate a univariate function.Finally,based on the results of the first two steps,the original nested loop reliability optimization model is completely transformed into a deterministic design optimization model that can be solved by a series of mature constrained optimization methods without any additional calculations.Two numerical examples of a planar 10-bar structure and an aviation hydraulic piping system with 28 design variables are analyzed to illustrate the performance and practicability of the proposed method.

文摘Recently,lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)have become the leading energy storage solution for electric vehicles due to their high energy density and long lifespan.Examining the health condition of LIBs is essential for their safe and reliable operation.This paper thoroughly assesses the latest researches on techniques for forecasting the health of LIBs,examines the properties of diverse methodologies,and proposes future development direc-tions.First,the aging mechanism of lithium-ion batteries is introduced and the factors affecting battery aging are explored.Then,based on different prediction objectives,the prediction of lithium-ion battery health is divided into state of health(SOH)estimation and end of life(EOL)prediction.The SOH estimation methods are introduced from model-based and data-driven methodologies,while the EOL prediction is focused on the data-driven methods.Finally,the future development direction of LIB health prediction is identified,and four new potential topics on battery prediction are proposed.

文摘The Three-River Headwater Region(TRHR), known as the "Water Tower of China", is an important ecological shelter for national security interests and regional sustainable development activities for many downstream regions in China and a number of Southeast Asian countries. The TRHR is a high-elevation, cold environment with a unique, but typical alpine vegetation system. Net primary productivity(NPP) is a key vegetation parameter and ecological indicator that can reflect both natural environmental changes and carbon budget levels. Given the unique geographical environment and strategic location of the TRHR, many scholars have estimated NPP of the TRHR by using different methods; however, these estimates vary greatly for a number of reasons. To date, there is no paper that has reviewed and assessed NPP estimation studies conducted in the TRHR. Therefore, in this paper, we(1) summarized the related methods and results of NPP estimation in the TRHR in a systematic review of previous research;(2) discussed the suitability of existing methods for estimating NPP in the TRHR and highlighted the most significant challenges; and(3) assessed the estimated NPP results. Finally, developmental directions of NPP estimation in the TRHR were prospected.
文摘The methods of estimating the minimum allowed value of IFOV (instantaneous field of view) of the detector in a rosette scan system are investigated. The common method for the estimation of IFOV is described. A new method which uses the maximum distance between two neighboring petals as the estimated value of IFOV is developed and a comparison between the common method and the new method is given. It is concluded that the minimum allowed value of IFOV of rosette scanning is over estimated by the common method while this value can be calculated accurately with the new method.
文摘Accurate assessment of herbage mass(HM)in pasture is a key to budgeting forage in grazing systems worldwide.Different non-destructive techniques to measuring pasture yield are commented.The methods compared include visual estimations,manual and electronic pasture meters and remote sensing.All methods are associated with a moderate to high error,showing that some indirect methods of yield estimation are appropriate under most appropriate because many factors as climate variations,soil certain conditions.In general terms,no method was found as the characteristics,plant phenology,pasture management and species composition must be taken into account to make local calibrations from a general model.Best results were found modifying general methods under local calibrations and under local conditions.In order to give farmers the best method to manage adequately their own grazing systems,researchers must select the most suitable technique considering the scale of operation,the desired accuracy and the resources available.

文摘Due to the pulse interference, measurement outliers and artificial modeling errors, the multivariate skew t noise widely exists in the real environment. However, to date, little attention has been paid to the state estimation for systems in which the process noise and the measurement noise are both modeled as the heavy-tailed and skew non-Gaussian noise. In this paper, the multivariate skew t distribution is utilized to model the heavy-tailed and skew non-Gaussian noise. Then a probabilistic graphical form of the multivariate skew t distribution is given and proved. Based on the probabilistic graphical form, a hierarchical Gaussian state space model for stochastic uncertain systems is proposed, which transforms the estimation problem for systems with the heavy-tailed and skew non-Gaussian noises into the one with a hierarchical Gaussian state space model. Next, given the designed Gaussian state space model, the robust Bayesian filter and smoother based on the variational Bayesian inference are proposed to approximately estimate the system state and the unknown noise parameters. Furthermore, the complexity analysis together with the controllability and observability for stochastic uncertain systems with multivariate skew t noises is given. Finally,the simulation results of the target tracking scenario verify the validity of the proposed algorithms.

文摘Forest evapotranspiration(ET),a core process of water vapor exchange between forest ecosystems and the atmosphere,is crucial for global carbon and water cycles and ecosystem stability.However,its high-precision estimation faces challenges arising from complex forest structures and multifactor driving mechanisms.Based on bibliometrics,this study visually analyzed 1,427 relevant papers from the Web of Science Core Collection(2005-2025)to summarize research status,hotspots and frontiers.Results show continuous growth in publications over two decades,peaking during 2017-2022.Journal co-occurrence reveals that Agricultural and Forest Meteorology ranks first,contributing 212 papers and 10,438 total citations with an average of 49.24 cites per article.The Chinese Academy of Sciences,University of CAS and USDA form a close collaboration network led by 279 core authors.Hotspots concentrate on eddy covariance(460 occurrences),remote sensing inversion(134)and machine learning(124,rapidly rising since 2017).Eddy covariance remains the“gold standard”;remote sensing breaks spatiotemporal limits by integrating multi-source data;machine learning,exhibiting the greatest advances,improves accuracy by 45%in complex environments(burst intensity 17.91 since 2017),promoting hybrid“physical mechanism+data-driven”models.Research evolved through three stages:traditional observation dominance(2005-2010),physical model optimization(2010-2016),and intelligent algorithm innovation(2017-present),with applications spanning ecological assessment and water resource management.

文摘The estimation of shear strength of rock mass discontinuity is always a focal, but difficult, problem in the field of geotechnical engineering. Considering the disadvantages and limitation of exist- ing estimation methods, a new approach based on the shadow area percentage (SAP) that can be used to quantify surface roughness is proposed in this article. Firstly, by the help of laser scanning technique, the three-dimensional model of the surface of rock discontinuity was established. Secondly, a light source was simulated, and there would be some shadows produced on the model surface. Thirdly, to obtain the value of SAP of each specimen, the shadow detection technique was introduced for use. Fourthly, compared with the result from direct shear testing and based on statistics, an empirical for- mula was found among SAP, normal stress, and shear strength. Data of Yujian (~ River were used as an example, and the following conclusions have been made. (1) In the case of equal normal stress, the peak shear stress is positively proportional to the SAP. (2) The formula for estimating was derived, and the predictions of peak-shear strength made with this equation well agreed with the experimental re- suits obtained in laboratory tests.

文摘The reasonable prior information between the parameters in the adjustment processing can significantly improve the precision of the parameter solution. Based on the principle of equality constraints, we establish the mixed additive and multiplicative random error model with equality constraints and derive the weighted least squares iterative solution of the model. In addition, aiming at the ill-posed problem of the coefficient matrix, we also propose the ridge estimation iterative solution of ill-posed mixed additive and multiplicative random error model with equality constraints based on the principle of ridge estimation method and derive the U-curve method to determine the ridge parameter. The experimental results show that the weighted least squares iterative solution can obtain more reasonable parameter estimation and precision information than existing solutions, verifying the feasibility of applying the equality constraints to the mixed additive and multiplicative random error model. Furthermore, the ridge estimation iterative solution can obtain more accurate parameter estimation and precision information than the weighted least squares iterative solution.

文摘The law of variation of deep rock stress in gravitational and tectonic stress fields is analyzed based on the Hoek-Brown strength criterion. In the gravitational stress field,the rocks in the shallow area are in an elastic state and the deep,relatively soft rock may be in a plastic state. However,in the tectonic stress field,the relatively soft rock in the shallow area is in a plastic state and the deep rock in an elastic state. A method is proposed to estimate stress values in coal and soft rock based on in-situ measurements of hard rock. Our estimation method relates to the type of stress field and stress state. The equations of rock stress in various stress states are presented for the elastic,plastic and critical states. The critical state is a special stress state,which indicates the conversion of the elastic to the plastic state in the gravitational stress field and the conversion of the plastic to the elastic state in the tectonic stress field. Two cases stud-ies show that the estimation method is feasible.

文摘With few available soil organic carbon(SOC)profiles and the heterogeneity of those that do exist, the estimation of SOC pools in karst areas is highly uncertain.Based on the spatial heterogeneity of SOC content of 23,536 samples in a karst watershed, a modified estimation method was determined for SOC storage that exclusively applies to karst areas. The method is a "soil-type method" based on revised calculation indexes for SOC storage. In the present study, the organic carbon contents of different soil types varied greatly, but generally decreased with increasing soil depth. The organic carbon content decreased nearly linearly to a depth of 0–50 cm and then varied at depths of 50–100 cm. Because of the large spatial variability in the karst area, we were able to determine that influences of the different indexes on the estimation of SOC storage decreased as follows: soil thickness > boulder content > rock fragment content > SOC content > bulk density. Using the modified formula, the SOC content in the Houzhai watershed in Puding was estimated to range from 3.53 to 5.44 kg m^(-2), with an average value of 1.24 kg m^(-2) to a depth of 20 cm, and from 4.44 to 14.50 kg m^(-2), with an average value of 12.12 kg m^(-2) to a depth of 100 cm. The total SOC content was estimated at 5.39*10^(5) t.

文摘Significant wave height is an important criterion in designing coastal and offshore structures.Based on the orthogonality principle, the linear mean square estimation method is applied to calculate significant wave height in this paper.Twenty-eight-year time series of wave data collected from three ocean buoys near San Francisco along the California coast are analyzed.It is proved theoretically that the computation error will be reduced by using as many measured data as possible for the calculation of significant wave height.Measured significant wave height at one buoy location is compared with the calculated value based on the data from two other adjacent buoys.The results indicate that the linear mean square estimation method can be well applied to the calculation and prediction of significant wave height in coastal regions.

文摘Based on the principle of conservative matter removal in estuary,a new method is proposed for estimating the ratio of sediment resuspension in estuaries with fine suspended sediments in the turbidity maximum zone(TMZ) of the Changjiang(Yangtze) estuary during 2005.Results show that there was a range of 18.7%±27.9% to 73.9%±22.5% per annum of total suspended particulate matter(SPM),with an average of 49.2%.Nearly half of the particulate matter in the TMZ originates from sediment resuspension.This indicates that sediment resuspension is one of the major mechanisms involved in formation of the TMZ.Compared with traditional method for calculating these ratios in the estuary,this new method evaluates the dynamic variation of SPM content carried by river runoff from the river mouth to the ocean.The new method produced more reliable results than the traditional one and could produce a better estimation of resuspension flux for particulate matter in estuaries.
文摘Based on the review of present force coefficients estimation methods, a new method in the frequency domain, revised cross-spectrum estimation method, is presented in this paper. Some experiments on the wave-current force on inclined cylinders are also described and the wave current force coefficients are estimated by the revised cross-spectrum estimation method. From the results, it is found that the wave and current directions have some regular effect on the coefficients. According to the results, some empirical formulas are obtained for converting the wave-current force coefficients on inclined cylinders into a unified coefficient. Comparisons show that the unified coefficients are in good agreement with other results.
