Oyster peptides were produced from Crassostrea hongkongensis and used as a new protein source for the preparation of an oyster peptide-based enteral nutrition formula (OPENF). Reserpine-induced malabsorption mice and cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression mice were used in this study. OPENF powder is light yellow green and has a protein-fat-carbohydrate ratio of 16:9:75 with good solubility in water. A pilot study investigating immune functional impacts of the OPENF on mice show that the OPENF enhanced spleen lymphocyte proliferation and the activity of natural killer (NK) cells in BALB/c mice. Furthermore, OPENF can improve intestinal absorption, increase food utilization ratio, and maintain the normal physiological function of mice. These results suggest that oyster peptides could serve as a new protein source for use in enteral nutrition formula, but more importantly, also indicate that OPENF has an immunostimulating effect in mice. 展开更多

Background: The objective of the present study was to evaluate during one year the total delivery of volume, calories, and proteins and compare them with the total prescribed to ICU patients using ENT (Enteral Nutrition Therapy) exclusively. Methods: Data on the prescribed or infused volume, calories, and protein, as well as their respective needs for each individual, were collected. Anthropometric parameters and age data were also collected from the medical records of 41 patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Results: Prescribed versus infused enteral diet volume was presented in 5 weeks which corresponds to the maximum duration of ICU treatment. Regarding sampling, the majority corresponded to elderly people (>64 years old) and males (63.4%). The total average prescribed was 719.2 mL of enteral diet on an average of 649.7 mL delivered. In addition, there was no significant difference between the prescribed and delivered volume, caloric value, and protein content of the diet only in the last week of hospitalization, which corresponded to the range of 29 - 36 days. Several factors make it difficult to reach the patient’s caloric and protein recommendations. Most of the reasons are not recorded, corresponding to 57.1%, indicating the difficulty of assessing the inadequacy of the prescribed and delivered volume. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first time that a prescription vs. delivery assessment has been carried out for patients in the Brazilian Midwest. In addition, although our research is a difficulty reported worldwide (in most hospitals), we also provide opportunities for how the problem was solved in our case, which may contribute to other cases. 展开更多

To the Editor:Nutrition optimization is a key component of the enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS)protocol for patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery, aiming to improve surgical outcomes through perioperative intervention.[1]According to the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism(ESPEN)guidelines, malnourished patients undergoing major cancer surgery should be treated with a specific enteral nutrition formula enriched with arginine and omega-3 fatty acids, either perioperatively or at least postoperatively. 展开更多

The effects of enteral nutrition containing long chain triglycerides (LCT) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) or L-arginine (Arg) on fat absorbability, serum free fatty acid profiles and intestinal morphology ... The effects of enteral nutrition containing long chain triglycerides (LCT) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) or L-arginine (Arg) on fat absorbability, serum free fatty acid profiles and intestinal morphology in rats with short-bowel syndrome (SBS) were studied using gas chromatography. Twenty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups: sham operation fed with LCT as control; 85% small bowel resection fed with LCT, MCT/LCT, and Arg/LCT, respectively. SBS rats showed a decrease of fat absorptivity. Enteral nutrition supplemented with MCT could increase fat absorptivity. L-Arginine enhanced enteral nutrition was associated with the elevation of fat absorptivity, possibly due to its enterotrophic effect on remnant small bowel mucosa. LCT group showed a significant deficiency of total free fatty acid and the decreased essential fatty acid content, which was improved in other two SBS groups. 展开更多

Background:Exclusive enteral nutrition(EEN)therapy effectively induces remission in pediatric Crohn’s disease(CD).However, this may depend on the type of enteral formula used. Moreover, data on the efficacy of amino acid-based EEN are limited. Thus,we aimed to prospectively evaluate the efficacy of amino acid-based formulas for EEN in pediatric patients with active CD.Methods:Patients with active CD aged between 6 and 17years were recruited into this prospective study from four hospitals in China between March 2019 and December 2021.Patients received EEN for 8weeks.Inflammatory and nutrition-associated indices were evaluated at 0,4,and 8weeks after treatment.Paired t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to compare continuous and categorical variables before and after intervention,respectively.Results:Twenty-four patients were included in the analysis. After an 8-week intervention period, the CD activity index significantly decreased(26.3±12.2 vs 7.1±8.3,P<0.001).Most patients(66.7%)achieved complete clinical remission.Among the 22 patients who had ulcers and erosions diagnosed endoscopically at baseline,10(45.5%)achieved complete mucosal healing. The degree of thickening of the intestinal wall was significantly reduced after EEN intervention, with a transmural healing rate of 42.9%.Furthermore,the serum inflammatory markers decreased and there was a significant improvement in the nutrition-related indices(P<0.05).There were no severe adverse effects. Conclusions:Amino acid-based EEN is effective and safe for treating pediatric-onset CD.Studies with larger sample sizes and mechanistic and follow-up studies are required to further validate these findings. 展开更多

Tempeh, yam, and sunflower’s flour have been known to have antidiabetic effects, but their combined effect on the histopathology of hyperglycemic rat pancreatic cells in an enteral formula has not been proven. This study aimed to analyze the effect of GLITEROS specific-diabetes enteral formula modification based on tempeh flour, yam flour, and sunflower seed flour on the score pancreatic damage, number and diameter of the islets of langerhans of hyperglycemic rats with streptozotocin induction. The intervention was administered via an oral probe for 28 days to 30 Wistar rats, with each group consisting of 6 rats. The formula was given at a dose of 3.97 g/200 g/day(P1)and 8.75 g/200gr/day(P2)compared to standard control(K),positive control(K+),and negative control(K-).Histopathological features of the pancreas were analyzed using the hematoxylin–eosin staining method.Data were analyzed using paied t-test/Wilcoxon and ANOVA/Kruskal Wallis. The results showed a significant repair of pancreatic cell damage in the treatment group(P1 and P2)after the intervention(p<0.05),but there was no difference in the number and diameter of the islets of Langerhans(p>0.05).Overall,our findings suggest that the modified GLITEROS specific-diabetes enteral formula made from tempeh, yam, and sunflower seeds flour on the histopathological picture of hyperglycemia-induced rat pancreas, especially in the repair of damage to pancreatic Langerhans cells. 展开更多
