The Proto-Literate Characters,Symbols and Ritual Civilization of Erlitou Culture

In recent years,a certain number of proto-literate symbols with pictographic features have been excavated at the sites of Erlitou,Yanshi County,and Nanzhai,Yichuan County,in Luoyang,Henan Province.Morphologically speaking,these are comparable with the inscriptions on Shang bronzes.At the same time,full sets of pottery and bronze ritual vessels indicate that it was during the Erlitou period that the early Chinese ritual system achieved completion.Some late Shang bronze inscriptions have pictographic script showing ritualtype artifacts;structurally,most of these differ from their contemporaries,but are stylistically close to their counterparts in the earlier Erlitou culture.The forms of the characters may be traceable back to their creation during the Erlitou culture.The independent gestation of this group of early characters is the product of ancient Chinese civilization;their discovery and interpretation bear witness to the close relationship between the ritual artifacts of the Huaxia culture and the early script,reflecting the transmission of the ritual system as the heart of ancient Chinese civilization. 展开更多

In research on the legendary Xia Dynasty of ancient China,the famous archaeological site of Erlitou and its culture are the most debated topics.A key question is whether this ancient culture is truly related to the Xia Dynasty.This study combines traditional literature(Xia Xiao Zheng),archaeological evidence(on alligators),and climate simulation(of autumn rains)to demonstrate that the ancient Chinese phenological calendar,Xia Xiao Zheng,likely originated in the same region as the Erlitou culture.A logical explanation of these findings is that both Xia Xiao Zheng and the Erlitou culture are indeed closely related to the Xia Dynasty. 展开更多

The Erlitou site is located at Yanshi City,Henan Province.This site is a large settlement site of Erlitou culture,and it is dated to 3800-3500 a BP.Five kinds of domestic animals,i.e.,dogs,pigs,sheep,goats,and cattle were found from the site.In this paper,two problems have emerged in studies involving the estimation of local isotope levels and the distinction of migrants from locals.Tooth enamel samples from 17 domestic animals individuals were analyzed for strontium isotope ratio(87Sr/86Sr),by the thermal ionization mass spectrometry,including 10 pigs,5 sheep and 2 cattle.The results show that the mean 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 10 pigs enamel samples were 0.712078,Based on the local strontium isotopes ratio range determined by the mean 87Sr/86Sr ratios ±2 of 10 pig enamel samples(0.712256-0.711900),we found that five sheep and one cattle from the Erlitou site fell well outside the local strontium isotopes ratio range and were considered to be non-local. 展开更多
