This study examines whether and how cues focusing enhances Chinese-speaking English learners’engagement in comparison,thereby facilitating their acquisition of English articles within xu-based comparative continuatio...This study examines whether and how cues focusing enhances Chinese-speaking English learners’engagement in comparison,thereby facilitating their acquisition of English articles within xu-based comparative continuation writing tasks.Fifty English majors from a Chinese university were randomly assigned to three groups and each group was required to complete a comparative continuation task with one of three conditions:paired cues(cues presented in pairs),randomized cues(cues presented in random order),or implicit cues(no explicit cues provided).All participants undertook pretests,posttests,and delayed tests on English article knowledge,and ten of them volunteered to take follow-up interviews.The results indicate that:1)paired cues were more effective than randomized or implicit cues in promoting the acquisition of English articles;and 2)learners in the paired cues condition produced more target-like article usage in their continuation writings compared to those in the other two conditions.The effectiveness of paired cues is attributed to an enhanced contrast effect,which prompts learners to identify similarities and differences between cues within each pair,relates cue explanations and examples with actual article usage in the reading text,and reflects upon and compares their own article productions against those in the provided reading text.The study concludes that the process of learning through continuation is fundamentally supported by learners’capacity for comparison,reinforcing its role as a core element of xu-competence.展开更多

When performing English-to-Tamil Neural Machine Translation(NMT),end users face several challenges due to Tamil's rich morphology,free word order,and limited annotated corpora.Although available transformer-based ...When performing English-to-Tamil Neural Machine Translation(NMT),end users face several challenges due to Tamil's rich morphology,free word order,and limited annotated corpora.Although available transformer-based models offer strong baselines,they compromise syntactic awareness and the detection and man-agement of offensive content in cluttered,noisy,and informal text.In this paper,we present POSDEP-Offense-Trans,a multi-task NMT framework that combines Part-of-Speech(POS)and Dependency Parsing(DEP)methods with a robust offensive language classification module.Our architecture enriches the Transformer encoder with syntax-aware embeddings and provides syntax-guided attention mechanisms.The architecture incorporates a structure-aware contrastive loss that reinforces syntactic consistency and deploys auxiliary classification heads for POS tagging,dependency parsing,and multi-class offensive detection.The classifier for offensive words operates at both sentence and token levels and obtains guidance from syntactic features and formal finite automata rules that model offensive language structures-hate speech,profanity,sarcasm,and threats.Using this architecture,we construct a syntactically enriched,socially annotated corpus.Experimental results show improvements in translation quality,with a BLEU score of 33.5,UAS/LAS parsing accuracies of 92.4%and 90%,and a 4.5%Fl-score gain in offensive content detection compared with baseline POS+DEP+Offense models.Also,the proposed model achieved 92.3%in offensive content neutralization,as confirmed by ablation studies.This comprehensive English-Tamil NMT model that unifies syntactic modelling and ethical filtering-laying the groundwork for applications in social media moderation,hate speech mitigation,and policy-compliant multilingual content generation.展开更多

English is one of the world’s most widely studied and spoken languages now.In China,the local variety of English,referred to in this study as China English from the World Englishes perspective,has been widely debated...English is one of the world’s most widely studied and spoken languages now.In China,the local variety of English,referred to in this study as China English from the World Englishes perspective,has been widely debated regarding its recognition as an English variety among Chinese speakers.This study examines the perceptions of Chinese graduate students majoring in English in Thailand toward World Englishes,China English,and their tolerance of China English in the Chinese EFL classroom after completing a 15-week World Englishes course.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven students and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.The findings indicated that while students acknowledged the legitimacy of World Englishes and China English in various contexts,they resisted its use in English language classrooms in China.Instead,they preferred conventional pedagogical approaches that prioritize native English varieties,particularly British and American English.These findings suggest that language educators in China should integrate diverse English varieties into the classroom by incorporating authentic learning materials and designing relevant learning activities.Such an approach would not only expose students to English diversity but also enhance their intercultural competence and global citizenship.展开更多

This study constructs a theoretical and analytical framework for examining the interplay between the information environment and autonomous English learning by integrating Zimmerman’s self-regulated learning theory w...This study constructs a theoretical and analytical framework for examining the interplay between the information environment and autonomous English learning by integrating Zimmerman’s self-regulated learning theory with the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM).This integrated framework reveals the underlying connections between learners’self-regulatory processes and their acceptance of technological tools.Using vocational college students as the target popula-tion,this study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to investi-gate the roles of the information environment,autonomous learning behaviors,learning psychology,and cross-cultural communication competence.The results demonstrate that the information environment significantly and positively influences both autonomous learning behaviors and learning psychology.Furthermore,cross-cultural communication competence is found to mediate this relationship.On the basis of these findings,several strategies are proposed:educational institutions should enhance intelligent resource databases and promote the develop-ment of AI-assisted learning systems;educators are encouraged to strengthen their competence in digital instructional design;and learners should be supported in improving their metacognitive strategies and ability to integrate technological tools effectively.展开更多

The interference of a tonal language poses challenges for Chinese learners of English to acquire word stress.The lack of symmetry between word stress problems in production and perception,and the absence of attention ...The interference of a tonal language poses challenges for Chinese learners of English to acquire word stress.The lack of symmetry between word stress problems in production and perception,and the absence of attention to specific stress patterns in teaching and learning,can reduce the effectiveness of word stress acquisition.The purpose of this paper is twofold:to examine the relationship between English word stress production and perception and to investigate how English word stress production and perception are affected by specific stress patterns.Ninety participants were involved in a production task and a perception task.Test words were selected based on 26 stress patterns in three categories:syllabic structure,phonological similarity,and vowel reduction.The results show that the production and perception of English word stress differ significantly without a strong linear correlation.Although the accuracy of word stress perception was higher than production for the test words in general,the comparative status of production and perception varied across different stress patterns.Specifically,in the syllabic structure category,the highest symmetry rate of word stress assignment in the production and perception forˈσCVCC(e.g.,climax,abend),while the symmetry rate forˈσoCVV(C)(e.g.,abdicate,importune)was the lowest and the most problematic for production.In the phonological similarity category,production and perception of word stress were most symmetrical for words with the suffix“-eous”and the most asymmetrical for words with the suffix“-ese,”which was also the most problematic for production.Identification of vowel reduction was more challenging for/ɒ/than/æ/in both production and perception.It is suggested that Chinese ESL teachers prioritize the teaching of stress patterns with low symmetrical relationships to achieve efficient learning outcomes.展开更多

文摘The verse chronicle known as Laʒamon’s(or Lawman’s)Brut is an important witness to changes in the English language and versecraft around the year 1200,and for this reason it has attracted the attention of historical linguists and lexicographers.Does it deserve greater attention among students of literature?This article begins by discussing what makes Brut unique in the corpus of Middle English literature and why it deserves our attention.The second part discusses the current project to complete the Early English Text Society’s edition of Brut,with an introduction,textual notes,and a glossary.The last section takes up Laʒamon’s practice of using French loanwords,since it stands at the beginning of the period in the 13th and 14th centuries,when English writers borrowed extensively from French.
文摘This study investigated the influence of the production-oriented approach on English speaking anxiety among non-English major college students.A quasi-experimental design was implemented over one semester with two parallel classes of junior students at a university in northwestern China.Data collected before and after the intervention using a validated Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale indicated that students experiencing POA instruction showed a discernible decrease in overall speaking anxiety,particularly concerning communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation,relative to peers instructed via the audio-lingual method.Analysis highlighted task-driven learning,scaffolded input facilitation,and formative process evaluation within the POA framework as contributing factors.Findings imply POA represents a potential pedagogical framework for addressing affective challenges in the development of EFL oral skills.
文摘This study constructs a theoretical and analytical framework for examining the interplay between the information environment and autonomous English learning by integrating Zimmerman’s self-regulated learning theory with the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM).This integrated framework reveals the underlying connections between learners’self-regulatory processes and their acceptance of technological tools.Using vocational college students as the target popula-tion,this study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to investi-gate the roles of the information environment,autonomous learning behaviors,learning psychology,and cross-cultural communication competence.The results demonstrate that the information environment significantly and positively influences both autonomous learning behaviors and learning psychology.Furthermore,cross-cultural communication competence is found to mediate this relationship.On the basis of these findings,several strategies are proposed:educational institutions should enhance intelligent resource databases and promote the develop-ment of AI-assisted learning systems;educators are encouraged to strengthen their competence in digital instructional design;and learners should be supported in improving their metacognitive strategies and ability to integrate technological tools effectively.

文摘The education of curriculum ideology and politics is vigorously implemented in China.It manifests in the teaching process across three dimensions:textbooks,educators,and learners.During lesson preparation,instructors may neglect the subtle ideological and political nuances present in original English textbooks,which can result in students misinterpreting the content.Additionally,time constraints hinder teachers from effectively clarifying these implicit factors.Furthermore,students who rely solely on the textbook are likely to accept the information at face value,missing the opportunity to clarify any misconceptions through interactive learning.Ultimately,the textbook is the key and foundation for the implementation of the curriculum ideology and politics in education.This paper takes medical English course as an example to demonstrate it.

文摘The interference of a tonal language poses challenges for Chinese learners of English to acquire word stress.The lack of symmetry between word stress problems in production and perception,and the absence of attention to specific stress patterns in teaching and learning,can reduce the effectiveness of word stress acquisition.The purpose of this paper is twofold:to examine the relationship between English word stress production and perception and to investigate how English word stress production and perception are affected by specific stress patterns.Ninety participants were involved in a production task and a perception task.Test words were selected based on 26 stress patterns in three categories:syllabic structure,phonological similarity,and vowel reduction.The results show that the production and perception of English word stress differ significantly without a strong linear correlation.Although the accuracy of word stress perception was higher than production for the test words in general,the comparative status of production and perception varied across different stress patterns.Specifically,in the syllabic structure category,the highest symmetry rate of word stress assignment in the production and perception forˈσCVCC(e.g.,climax,abend),while the symmetry rate forˈσoCVV(C)(e.g.,abdicate,importune)was the lowest and the most problematic for production.In the phonological similarity category,production and perception of word stress were most symmetrical for words with the suffix“-eous”and the most asymmetrical for words with the suffix“-ese,”which was also the most problematic for production.Identification of vowel reduction was more challenging for/ɒ/than/æ/in both production and perception.It is suggested that Chinese ESL teachers prioritize the teaching of stress patterns with low symmetrical relationships to achieve efficient learning outcomes.
文摘The Shanghai Gaokao English is characterized by diverse question types,a high difficulty level,and innovative thematic content.Among these,the single-sentence Chinese-to-English translation task stands out as a distinctive component,presenting challenges,such as extensive vocabulary requirements,implicit grammatical testing,mandatory use of provided parenthetical words,and the incorporation of“four-character structures”(四字格).Candidates frequently experience significant score losses in this section during preparation and mock examinations.This paper analyzes practical methodologies for tackling Chinese-English translation tasks by examining authentic questions from Shanghai Gaokao English(spring and autumn examinations)over the past six years,aiming to provide teachers and students with effective test-taking strategies.

文摘“World English”,also known as“Global English”which has been attracting wide ranged attention by scholars world⁃wide,is a relatively new way to understand the spread of English.It also somewhat greatly affects the methodology that Chinese teachers and students apply to approach English teaching and learning respectively.This paper starts with a brief introduction to the trend of English globalization and followed by the difference between China English and Chinglish.In addition,it analyzes the use of China English as one of the standard species of“World English”.Finally,it suggests that in order to achieve better ap⁃plication of English,make the best use of China English as a supplement of English teaching and learning could be a reasonable way.
