In the contemporary era of globalization,English has evolved into a multifaceted tool for intercultural communication,transcending its traditional boundaries.This paper explores the shifting paradigms in English language teaching(ELT),moving away from the pursuit of native-like competence towards a more pragmatic focus on communicative proficiency in English as a Lingua Franca(ELF).Through an examination of global English varieties and ELT goals,the paper argues for a pedagogical approach that embraces linguistic diversity and prioritizes effective communication over conformity to native norms.Drawing on insights from ELF research and communicative language teaching methodologies,it advocates for empowering learners with the skills to navigate diverse linguistic contexts and engage in meaningful interactions with speakers from diverse cultural backgrounds. 展开更多

Cultivating Core Competencies in English through Local Red Culture:A Tangshan-Based Pedagogical Model for Middle School Students

Integrating local cultural resources into language teaching is a significant trend in fostering students’core competencies.This study addresses the challenge of effectively implementing China’s educational policy of“Core Competencies for English as a Subject”in middle school classrooms by leveraging the unique revolutionary(“Red”)culture of Tangshan City.The research developed and tested a pedagogical model that utilizes Tangshan’s rich Red Culture heritage-such as the Kailuan Miners’Movement and the Xifengkou Great Wall Resistance relics-as authentic content for English language learning.Employing a mixed-methods approach,including literature review,fieldwork,action research,and case analysis in partner middle schools,the project involved designing thematic teaching resources(e.g.,lesson plans,micro-lectures)and implementing interactive activities like role-playing and project-based learning.Findings indicate that this localized approach significantly enhanced students’engagement,cultural awareness,critical thinking,and language application skills,effectively addressing the four dimensions of English core competencies:language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity,and learning ability.The study concludes that the“Local Culture-Integrated Core Competency Model”provides a practical,replicable framework for synergizing values education with language acquisition.It offers valuable insights for educators worldwide seeking to incorporate local history and values into foreign language curricula,promoting deeper contextual learning. 展开更多

The verse chronicle known as Laʒamon’s(or Lawman’s)Brut is an important witness to changes in the English language and versecraft around the year 1200,and for this reason it has attracted the attention of historical linguists and lexicographers.Does it deserve greater attention among students of literature?This article begins by discussing what makes Brut unique in the corpus of Middle English literature and why it deserves our attention.The second part discusses the current project to complete the Early English Text Society’s edition of Brut,with an introduction,textual notes,and a glossary.The last section takes up Laʒamon’s practice of using French loanwords,since it stands at the beginning of the period in the 13th and 14th centuries,when English writers borrowed extensively from French. 展开更多

This study investigated the influence of the production-oriented approach on English speaking anxiety among non-English major college students.A quasi-experimental design was implemented over one semester with two parallel classes of junior students at a university in northwestern China.Data collected before and after the intervention using a validated Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale indicated that students experiencing POA instruction showed a discernible decrease in overall speaking anxiety,particularly concerning communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation,relative to peers instructed via the audio-lingual method.Analysis highlighted task-driven learning,scaffolded input facilitation,and formative process evaluation within the POA framework as contributing factors.Findings imply POA represents a potential pedagogical framework for addressing affective challenges in the development of EFL oral skills. 展开更多

Asymmetry Across Stress Patterns:Production and Perception of English Word Stress by Chinese ESL Learners

The interference of a tonal language poses challenges for Chinese learners of English to acquire word stress.The lack of symmetry between word stress problems in production and perception,and the absence of attention to specific stress patterns in teaching and learning,can reduce the effectiveness of word stress acquisition.The purpose of this paper is twofold:to examine the relationship between English word stress production and perception and to investigate how English word stress production and perception are affected by specific stress patterns.Ninety participants were involved in a production task and a perception task.Test words were selected based on 26 stress patterns in three categories:syllabic structure,phonological similarity,and vowel reduction.The results show that the production and perception of English word stress differ significantly without a strong linear correlation.Although the accuracy of word stress perception was higher than production for the test words in general,the comparative status of production and perception varied across different stress patterns.Specifically,in the syllabic structure category,the highest symmetry rate of word stress assignment in the production and perception forˈσCVCC(e.g.,climax,abend),while the symmetry rate forˈσoCVV(C)(e.g.,abdicate,importune)was the lowest and the most problematic for production.In the phonological similarity category,production and perception of word stress were most symmetrical for words with the suffix“-eous”and the most asymmetrical for words with the suffix“-ese,”which was also the most problematic for production.Identification of vowel reduction was more challenging for/ɒ/than/æ/in both production and perception.It is suggested that Chinese ESL teachers prioritize the teaching of stress patterns with low symmetrical relationships to achieve efficient learning outcomes. 展开更多

With the increasing use of technology in language education,understanding the benefits and barriers of mobile-assisted language learning(MALL)is crucial for effective integration.Qualitative data were collected through interviews among Chinese English teachers in universities.Thematic analysis was employed to identify themes.The findings reveal that Chinese English teachers perceive MALL to offer benefits like convenience,effectiveness,efficiency,engagement,personalization,and resource richness.However,several barriers were identified,including low teacher ability,student device misuse,lack of institutional support,technical limitations,health concerns,and time constraints.These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the adoption of MALL in Chinese universities and have implications for language teaching practice. 展开更多

With the increasing frequency of global medical exchanges,the English translation of clinical medicine disease names has become a key factor affecting medical safety,the quality of academic exchanges,and the level of medical education.Meanwhile,there are certain problems in the English translation of clinical medicine disease names in China currently,mainly manifested in the prevalence of multiple translations for one term,prominent issues of literal translation and mistranslation,and inconsistent naming principles.Based on this,this paper focuses on the strategies for standardized English translation of clinical medicine disease names.By explaining the root causes of the problems existing in the current translation field,it further puts forward standardized suggestions from aspects such as establishing authoritative reference standards,following the basic principles of“respecting the originator,following conventions,and adhering to scientific norms”,strengthening medical English education,and using modern tools to assist learning.These efforts aim to gradually unify and standardize disease names,reduce ambiguities and errors,and lay a foundation for international medical exchanges and evidence-based medical research. 展开更多
