Background:A significant challenge regarding notable historical figures is determining the accuracy of the words and actions attributed to them with the limited available evidence, when their biographers have presented a biased life assessment.Lauded as a founding suffragette, the first female school principal, and the first white female practicing physician in Canada,Dr.Emily Stowe did not help historians. She destroyed her records, leaving her life story to be told by her daughter, who portrayed her as a heroine–a view that has persisted since the start of the 20th century. To improve the accuracy of assessing the life of Emily Stowe,as much information as possible about Stowe must be collected and interpreted. Methods:Presented is a narrative research method for analyzing historical figures that examines 22 life-changing events in the life of Stowe by answering six types of questions about each event:when, where, who, what, how, and why. Results:This narrative research, representing a psychoanalytic research process, finds that much of the repeated story of Stowe is either exaggerated or likely false. Conclusion:Following the example of Emily Stowe, this unique method is applicable for improving the historical accuracy in assessing the lives of other notable figures. It represents a method extendable to those currently alive, outside the public eye, searching to develop their own narrative. 展开更多

By examining the translators’ respective fields, habitus, and translation strategies, this study elucidates the interrelated logic behind the two translations, demonstrating how divergences in translation approaches manifest in the target texts. Yang Qishen pursues domestication and prioritizes clarity and fluency, aligning the translation with Chinese linguistic conventions to enhance readability. He Xin, however, adheres more closely to the source text, favoring foreignization that preserves the original linguistic features, even at the expense of fluency, in pursuit of fidelity. 展开更多

This paper argues that the dialogues of Emily Grierson in William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” systematically and profoundly violate H.P. Grice’s Cooperative Principle and its component maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner, which is not merely a manifestation of her personal eccentricity but also a powerful linguistic act of resistance. Through her non-cooperative speeches, Emily asserts her autonomy, defies the probing and judgmental gaze of her community, and maintains the integrity of her isolated world. Ultimately, she symbolizes the Old South’s desperate, tragic, and often grotesque struggle against the inevitable forces of change and modernization. 展开更多

Faulkner's description of the characters' psychology in A Rose for Emily accords well with Freudian psychoanalytic theory, for there are similar conflicts among the id, the ego and the superego in the plot development. By analyzing several important characters in the novel through employing Freudian theory of human psyche, this thesis gives the explanation to the causes of the conflict and clash between Emily and the society, and then deeply explores the thematic concerns of the short novel. 展开更多

Although there were just seven poems published during her lifetime, she was brought to many people's attention. Some people believe that Dickinson is a real romantic but others think she is a transcendentalist. However, both the factors of romanticism and transcendentalism can be seen in her character indeed. Romantic factors include individualism in her personality and her escaping from society. Transcendental factors are oversoul and mysticalness. If all the factors are taken into account, Emily Dickinson can fall into the category of both romanticism and transcendentalism. 展开更多

"Boudoir Lament" is regarded as a distinctive subgenre of classical Chinese poetry. This essay argues that some of Dickinson's poems are replete with the sensibility characteristic of "Boudoir Lament" poetry. The "Boudoir Lament" resonance of her poetry, along with her seclusion and love story, activate Chinese readers' cultural memory to re-imagine her and re-mold her image with the Chinese flavor.Rewriting Dickinson in the way of "Boudoir Lament" is interwoven with the contemporary reconfirmation and reexamination of this emotional pattern. 展开更多

This paper investigates the development of the heroine's psychology during the period presented in A Rose for Emily by displaying her experiences in chronological order and teasing out the details that may have caused significant influence on Emily's mental state. It is concluded that Emily has developed a particularly strong desire for controlling and personal awareness under the social deprivation by her father for about thirty years, contributing to her twisted acknowledgement of her relationship with Homer, which are later triggered off when Homer refuses to marry her, finally into the seemingly inconceivable ending that Emily kills him and spends the rest forty years of her life with the decomposing corpse of her beloved one's. 展开更多
