The role of sexual selection in this process is controversial; however, most of the work has centered on mate choice while the role of male-male competition in speciation is relatively understudied. Here, we outline how male-male competition can be a source of diversifying selection on male competitive phenotypes, and how this can contribute to the evolution of reproductive isolation. We highlight how negative frequency-dependent selection (advantage of rare phenotype arising from stronger male-male competition between similar male phenotypes compared with dissimilar male pheno- types) and disruptive selection (advantage of extreme phenotypes) drives the evolution of diversity in competitive traits such as weapon size, nuptial coloration, or aggressiveness. We underscore that male-male competition interacts with other life-history functions and that variable male com- petitive phenotypes may represent alternative adaptive options. In addition to competition for mates, aggressive interference competition for ecological resources can exert selection on compet- itor signals. We call for a better integration of male-male competition with ecological interference competition since both can influence the process of speciation via comparable but distinct mecha- nisms. Altogether, we present a more comprehensive framework for studying the role of male-male competition in speciation, and emphasize the need for better integration of insights gained from other fields studying the evolutionary, behavioral, and physiological consequences of agonistic interactions.展开更多

Experiment 1, in which the spots and their placement imitated the arrangement on the crab Carcinus maenas, tested whether high and low contrast spots touching the body outline (disruptive 'edge' morphs) made the artificial prey more difficult to detect than when the spots did not touch the outline (non-disruptive 'inner' morphs) against three different backgrounds: 'small', 'middle' and 'large' spot size. In Experiment 2, the range of spot sizes and their positions ('edge' and 'inner') on the crab morphs were varied to determine the most effective combination against the 'mid- dle' background. Altogether, 640 volunteers participated in these computer trials, representing a high degree of independent replication. All patterned morphs were significantly harder to detect than plain morphs, indicating that possessing at least some degree of background matching can provide camouflage. Both experiments demonstrated that various morphs, though not having the same spot sizes as the background, had similar or better survivorship as those with matching spot sizes--indicating that opti- mal camouflage did not come from background matching alone. In Experiment 2, edge-disrupted morphs consistently took longer to find than their non-disruptive counterparts. The relative effects of edge disruption, contrast, and background/prey spot size are clearly context-dependent, highlighting the complexity of prey concealment [Current Zoology 61 (4): 718-728, 2015].展开更多

In case 1, a fellow used a colonoscopy simulator while interacting with a standardized patient (SP), nurse, and attending physician all played by actors. The nurse and attending were instructed to display specific disruptive behavior and disregard the fellow unless requested to stop the disruptive behavior and focus on the patient and procedure. In case 2, the fellow was to calm an intern managing a patient with massive gastrointestinal bleeding. The objective in both scenarios was to assess the fellows’ ability to perform their duties while managing the disruptive behavior displayed by the actor. The SPs used checklists to rate fellows’ performances. The fellows completed a self-assessment survey.RESULTSTwelve fellows from four gastrointestinal fellowship training programs participated in the OSCE. In the “distracted care team” case, one-third of the fellows interrupted the conflict and refocused attention to the patient. Half of the fellows were able to display professionalism despite the heated discussion nearby. Fellows scored lowest in the interprofessionalism portion of post-OSCE surveys, measuring their ability to handle the conflict. In the “frazzled intern” case, 68% of fellows were able to establish a calm and professional relationship with the SP. Despite this success, only half of the fellows were successfully communicate a plan to the SP and only a third scored “well done” in a domain that focused on allowing the intern to think through the case with the fellow’s guidance.CONCLUSIONFellows must receive training on how to approach disruptive behavior. OSCEs are a tool that can assess fellow skills and set a culture for open discussion.展开更多

As referenced in a previously published article, the Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty is one of the service areas where these behaviors occur more frequently. Despite growing evidence of the ill effects of these types ofbehaviors many organizations are still having a difficult time in addressing these issues in an effective manner. Gaining a better understanding of the nature, causes, and impact of these behaviors is crucial to finding the right remedies for solution. Nobody intentionally starts the day planning to be disruptive, it's just that things get in the way. A combination of deep seated factors related to age and gender preferences, culture and ethnicity, life experiences, and other events that help shape values, attitudes and personalities, and more external factors related to training, environmental pressures, stress and burnout, and other personal issues all contribute to the mix. Given the complexities of today's health care environment, each person needs to recognize the importance of being held accountable for appropriate actions and behaviors that affect work relationships and care coordination that impact patient care. Early recognition, early intervention, and taking a pro-active supportive approach to improve individual behaviors will result in better relationships, less disruption, more satisfaction, and better outcomes of care.展开更多

In order to adapt to the non-orthogonal parameter value range caused by the selfconstrained parametric modeling method, a non-orthogonal space mapping method that maps the optimal Latin hypercube sampling points of the traditional orthogonal design space to the non-orthogonal design space is proposed. Based on the logical regression method in machine learning field, a kind of feasible domain boundary identification method is employed to identify whether the sample spatial response meets the relevant criteria. The method proposed in this paper is used to identify and analyze the key technologies of the high-pressure turbine mortise joint structure. It is found that the preliminary design of the aero engine may lead to the failure to obtain a mortise joint structure meeting the design requirements in the detailed design stage. The mortise joint structure needs to be pre-optimized in the preliminary design stage.展开更多

The multiplication factor of the anomalous transport coefficient was adjusted to model the major disruptive discharge with double-null divertor configuration based on shot 61 916. The real-time feed-back control system for the plasma displacement was employed. Modeling results of the evolution of the poloidal field coil currents, the plasma current, the major radius, the plasma configuration all show agreement with experimental measurements. Results from the simulation show that during disruption, heat flux about 8 MW m-2 flows to the upper divertor target plate and about 6 MW m-2 flows to the lower divertor target plate. Computations predict that different amounts of heat fluxes on the divertor target plate could result by adjusting the multiplication factor of the anomalous transport coefficient. This shows that TSC has high flexibility and predictability.展开更多

Here billions of USD are annually invested in developing new treatments, drugs, robots etc. to diagnose and cure diseases. Nevertheless, this study establishes that there is a fundamental shortcoming in the system that supports healthcare innovation: It is strongly biased towards micro-level innovation projects focusing on new products, alternative processes, and new financial solutions. The problem with this approach to support new projects is that the results are created as inventions within the system thus lacking holistic perspectives. This has consequently contributed with increasing costs that are out of proportion with existing budgets. Therefore this study seeks to analyze the current understanding of the Nordic healthcare system from a business model perspective. Here other aspects of the healthcare system are explored to determine if they could be redesigned to promote new types of innovation projects. The purpose of undertaking this task is to challenge the established patterns of the current healthcare innovation support practices. Here the vertical innovation process (VIP) framework, which is a systematic radical innovation model that seeks macro-level outcomes based on standalone inventions (see more below), is applied to analyze the current state-of-the-art in Nordic healthcare innovation projects. The results determine that very little attention is given to rethink and redesign the healthcare system at a macro-level, and it is discussed that stand-alone inventions ought to be rethought into the entire healthcare system to create a larger impact. Finally, it is argued that existing performance measures are inappropriate to foster projects that innovate the existing system: New measuring points should be developed to promote macro-level projects and to avoid the current rapid increase of costs in the Nordic healthcare system.展开更多

This was achieved by identifying, studying, and understanding the impacts, current trends, and different disruptive ideas and innovations emerging in the food industry. The study was conducted through interpretive research philosophy by carrying out secondary data collection processes, where both qualitative and quantitative information was presented. Deductive approaches were also selected to apply existing theories and models, which were used to construct research hypotheses and present detailed findings. The study finds that, with disruptive thinking, enhancements in the product life cycle, new flavors, and improvements in food packaging have been possible. The supply chain, which is always considered a complex part of the food industry, has been streamlined, offering greater transparency and real-time tracking and improving quality control across distribution systems.展开更多

The key lies in how industrial clusters respond to disruptive innovation. The main obstacles to the development of disruptive innovation in industrial clusters are lock-in and cluster inertia, which originate from the negative effects of cluster system isomorphism. In order to break through the development barriers, industrial clusters need to adopt a targeted overall response strategy, including adopting bottom-up local subversive innovation policies, introducing external knowledge, encouraging spin-off entrepreneurial enterprises, and encouraging alliances and cooperation between incumbent enterprises and entrepreneurial enterprises, etc.展开更多

Fuel discharge contains multi-component fluid dynamics with phase changes, and, in the present study, the SFR safety analysis code SIMMER (Sn, implicit, multifield, multicomponent, Eulerian recriticality) was utilized as a technical basis. First, dominant phenomena affecting fuel discharge through the CRGT are identified based on parametric calculations by the SIMMER code. Next, validations on the code models closely relating to these phenomena were carried out based on experimental data. It was shown that the SIMMER code with some model modifications could reproduce the experimental results appropriately. Through the present study, the evaluation methodology for the molten-fuel discharge through the CRGT was successfully developed.展开更多

OSCEs are a tool that can assess fellow skills and set a culture for open discussion.
文摘Disruptive behaviors in health care can have a significant adverse effect on staff interactions that can negatively impact staff satisfaction, staff performance, and patient outcomes of care. Early recognition, early intervention, and taking a pro-active supportive approach to improve individual behaviors will result in better relationships, less disruption, more satisfaction, and better outcomes of care.
文摘In aero engine design, determining whether the preliminary design will have disruptive effects on the detailed design is the key to multidisciplinary design optimization in the preliminary design stage. The mortise joint structure needs to be pre-optimized in the preliminary design stage.

文摘The tokamak simulation code (TSC) is employed to simulate the complete evolution of a disruptive discharge in the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak. This shows that TSC has high flexibility and predictability.
文摘The Nordic healtheare model is recognized to be one of the most innovative in the world. Finally, it is argued that existing performance measures are inappropriate to foster projects that innovate the existing system: New measuring points should be developed to promote macro-level projects and to avoid the current rapid increase of costs in the Nordic healthcare system.
文摘This study aimed to understand disruptive thinking and how its ideas can change the food industry. The supply chain, which is always considered a complex part of the food industry, has been streamlined, offering greater transparency and real-time tracking and improving quality control across distribution systems.
文摘Disruptive innovation may be a fatal threat to industrial clusters, or it may be a major development opportunity. The key lies in how industrial clusters respond to disruptive innovation. The main obstacles to the development of disruptive innovation in industrial clusters are lock-in and cluster inertia, which originate from the negative effects of cluster system isomorphism. In order to break through the development barriers, industrial clusters need to adopt a targeted overall response strategy, including adopting bottom-up local subversive innovation policies, introducing external knowledge, encouraging spin-off entrepreneurial enterprises, and encouraging alliances and cooperation between incumbent enterprises and entrepreneurial enterprises, etc.
文摘The purpose of the present study is to develop a methodology to evaluate fuel discharge through the CRGT (control-rod guide tube) during CDAs (core-disruptive accidents) of SFRs (sodium-cooled fast reactors), since fuel discharge will decrease the core reactivity and CRGTs have a potential to provide an effective discharge path. Through the present study, the evaluation methodology for the molten-fuel discharge through the CRGT was successfully developed.

文摘Currently, flight delays are common and they propagate from an originating flight to connecting flights, leading to large disruptions in the overall schedule. These disruptions cause massive economic losses, affect airlines’reputations, waste passengers’time and money, and directly impact the environment. This study adopts a network science approach for solving the delay propagation problem by modeling and analyzing the flight schedules and historical operational data of an airline. We aim to determine the most disruptive airports, flights, flightconnections, and connection types in an airline network.Disruptive elements are influential or critical entities in an airline network. They are the elements that can either cause(airline schedules)or have caused(historical data)the largest disturbances in the network. An airline can improve its operations by avoiding delays caused by the most disruptive elements. The proposed network science approach for disruptive element analysis was validated using a case study of an operating airline. The analysis indicates that potential disruptive elements in a schedule of an airline are also actual disruptive elements in the historical data and they should be considered to improve operations. The airline network exhibits small-world effects and delays can propagate to any part of the network with a minimum of four delayed flights. Finally,we observed that passenger connections between flights are the most disruptive connection type. Therefore, the proposed methodology provides a tool for airlines to build robust flight schedules that reduce delays and propagation.

文摘This article describes a conceptual approach for effective, inclusive, and integrative governance to cope with polycrisis and systemic risks. These challenges arise from the high complexity of causal relationships, particularly when multiple risks are interconnected, leading to cascading and cross-boundary impacts.Uncertainty in these relationships further complicates mitigation efforts. Our approach focuses on critical elements of systemic risk governance, particularly the“risk governance triangle,”which connects persistent disruptive stressors,risk-absorbing systems, and contextual modifiers. These stressors can be physical(energy, substance, biota)or social(information, power)and interact with exposed targets influenced by their context. We decompose these circumstances into five layers, forming the Pagoda model:natural conditions, institutional arrangements, technical and social infrastructure, the built environment, and individual/social behavior.A central pillar of our proposal is prioritizing bottom-up policy making, creating common deliberative spaces that actively involve stakeholders and citizens.
文摘Central bank digital currency(CBDC)is a groundbreaking innovation that provides a digital currency issued by the state to replace cash and commercial bank deposits, and is gradually changing the operating mode of the traditional financial system. This paper explores the disruptive impact of CBDC on financial institutions, monetary policy and payment systems through theoretical analysis and empirical data. The study pointed out that CBDC has the potential to improve financial inclusion, reduce transaction costs and enhance the efficiency of monetary policy transmission. However, the challenges it has caused, such as financial disintermediation, systemic risks and privacy issues, urgently need to establish a strong regulatory framework to address them.Through data-driven insights and case studies, this paper provides a comprehensive perspective on how to find a balance between innovation and financial stability.

文摘In the Industry 4.0 era, disruptive technologies such as big data analytics,blockchain,Internet-of-Things,and additive manufacturing have become major forces driving supply chain transformation.Under such circumstances, particular attention should be attached to balancing resilience and efficiency of the supply chain, especially in the presence of more turbulence. In this study,we first summarize the conflicts between supply chain efficiency and supply chain resilience regarding practices and objectives. Then,we discuss the positive effects of disruptive technologies in improving resilience and efficiency.Afterwards,we propose a research agenda that covers both the influence mechanism and trade-off mechanism of these technologies in terms of resilience and efficiency.
