Bemisia tabaci is a polyphagous herbivore that feeds on a wide range of horticultural and ornamental crops cultivated under diverse ecological zones. In Sierra Leone, B. tabaci is found to infest a wide range of vegetable crops by directly feeding on phloem sap thereby inducing physiological disorders, and also serve as a vector to gemini viruses. Invariably the destructive feeding of B. tabaci affects the productivity and aesthetic values of vegetables and other horticultural crops and hence is considered a serious economic pest. A bioassay experiment was carried out by rearing B. tabaci populations on four vegetable crops under controlled laboratory conditions to determine its life table and demographic parameters. Results showed that the intrinsic rate of growth which measures the population size and growth pattern was highest for populations reared on tomato crops with the following values: rm 0.145 female female−1 day−1, the gross reproduction rate (Ro), and finite growth rate λ were highest for population reared on tomato, correspondingly the development period from egg-adult emergence was shortest with a value of 26 d. Conversely, the computed demographical parameters rm, λ and Ro for the population reared on sweet pepper were 0.106 female female−1 day−1 respectively, with a corresponding development period egg-adult emergence as 36d. The computed biological parameters for okra and garden egg varied with intermediary values between tomato and pepper host materials. The survivorship rates were quite significant for the smaller instars (Instars 1-III) with over 80% surviving to pre-pupa and pupa stage for the populations reared for all the test materials. High mortality was noticed for the pre-pupa and pupa stages as their survival rates were significantly low compared to the high survival rates of the smaller instars. Less than 50% of pupae failed to emerge to adults except for populations reared on tomato test materials where 52% emerged to adults. The study indicated tomato as the most suitable host among the four vegetable crops. Although life table and demographic parameters are invaluable information for forecasting pest populations and help in designing pest management efforts, further investigations such as the economic threshold and economic injury levels of B. tabaci population are requisite decision tools for sound pest management decisions of B. tabaci on these vegetable crops. The information obtained from this investigation would be quite relevant for extension service and pest management practitioners where mixed vegetable farming is a common practice. 展开更多

Population ageing is an inevitable and irreversible demographic reality associated with improvements in health and medical care. While increasing longevity is a matter of celebration;it is linked with multiple morbidities and disabilities. The huge number of suggestions to cope with feasible growth in demand for long-term care in ageing societies can be organized under four headings:(1)improving system enactment;(2)supporting informal caregivers;(3)restructuring of service delivery;and(4)shifting of demographic parameters. Many older women rate their health as poor and experience relatively low mental health status.More than half of all older women indicate signs of mental distress according to measures of subjective wellbeing. They also carry higher burden of both acute and chronic morbidity than their male counterparts due to difference in social status, economic dependency, and cultural barriers. 展开更多

This paper is concerned with the bionomics and demography of Pediculaster fletchmanni Wicht (Acari: Siteroptidae) under controlled conditions (20 ± l, 22 ± 1 and 25 ± 1℃, 70% ± 5% relative humidity and a photoperiod of 16L : 8D hours). Glass Petri dishes inoculated with Trichoderma sp. mycelia were used as substrate and food source. The mean developmental time of the egg and the active larva did not differ significantly at the various constant temperatures, but these periods were significantly different for the quiescent larval stage. The preoviposition period ranged from 2.3 to 2.8 days, the ovipositional period increased with temperature increase, and all females died immediately after oviposition. The development of active larvae was the fastest of all life stages. The developmental threshold ranged between 5.25-14.22℃ the highest value being observed for the quiescent larval development. For immature development required 89.29 degree-days. Values of rm (intrinsic rate of increase) were 0.229, 0.398 and 0.386 for 20, 22 and 25℃ respectively. Finite rates of increase (λ) increased along with increasing temperature from 20-25℃ consequently the population doubling time (D) and mean generation time (T) showed significant differences with increasing temperature. 展开更多

Although food supplementation is well known to increase population density, there is still debate on the causative effects of food supplementation on reproduction, survival, and immigration.Large manipulative experiments, which exclude any confounding effects of dispersal and predation, are essential for clarifying the debate. In this study,we investigated the effects of food supplementation on Brandt's vole population dynamics and plant community in eight large enclosures(0.48 ha each) from2010 to 2014.Food supplementation showed significant positive effects on population density due to increases in recruitment;however,it showed a complex effect on survival of voles:positive in non-breeding seasons, but negative in breeding seasons. In addition, food supplementation increased the quality of plants(as reflected by increased crude protein content),but decreased the quantity of less preferred plants in experimental enclosures. Thus, food seems to have direct positive effects on small rodents through improvement of food supply and indirect negative effects through food-induced density-dependent effects, and may have long-term effects on rodents through altering plant community composition and abundance. 展开更多
