Passenger choice between demand-responsive train and pre-scheduled train in high-speed railway:A stated preference study

Demand-responsive transportation has been introduced in many cities around the world.However,whether it is applicable in the railway is still questionable,an exploration of passenger choice behavior between demandresponsive trains and pre-scheduled trains is pivotal in addressing this issue.To delve into passengers’choice preferences when facing demand-responsive trains and to dissect the feasibility of implementing demandresponsive service in high-speed railways,the stated preference survey method is employed to investigate travel intention of passengers.Based on the survey data obtained in China,the heterogeneity of passengers is analyzed from three aspects:personal socio-economic characteristics,travel characteristics,and travel mode choice.Considering the situation that demand-responsive train cannot operate,the risk attributes are considered.To bolster the appeal of demand-responsive trains,personalized service product attributes are added.Mixed Logit mode,which takes into account the heterogeneous travel choice behavior of passengers,is developed,and Maximum Likelihood Estimation and the Monte Carlo method are used to calibrate model parameters.The willingness to pay in terms of different factors of passengers is determined.The results indicate that early arrival deviation time,late arrival deviation time,demand response time,and success rate of ticket purchase remarkable influence passengers’decision regarding demand-responsive train,with only the success rate of ticket purchase positively impacting train choice.Moreover,the significant difference in train ticket price is observed solely in the self-funded long distance scenario,while demand-responsive trains are found to be particularly appealing in self-funded short distance scenario.Through the Willingness To Pay(WTP)analysis,it is discovered that by shortening demand response time,enhancing the success rate of ticket purchase,and minimizing the deviation times of early arrival and late arrival of trains,the attractiveness of the demand-responsive train to passengers under three travel scenarios can be augmented.This study provides profound insights into the possibility of railway enterprises operating demand-responsive trains. 展开更多

With the advancement in autonomous driving techniques,autonomous demand-responsive transit(ADRT)is a newly emerging sustainable transport mode for the future,which will provide more flexible services to public users.ADRT offers benefits such as flex-ible stops and routes and comfortable seats,but it also involves risks due to the vehicles being driverless.This paper particularly investigates users’preferences and attitudes towards ADRT,and mode choice behavior between ADRT buses and traditional buses.A survey with Likert scale statements and stated preference(SP)choice scenarios is designed and conducted to explore users’attitudes towards the safety risks of autonomous vehicles(AVs),social concerns,service flexibility concerns when using AVs,interest in new things,and shuttle mode choices.An integrated choice and latent variable(ICLV)model is adopted to explore users’psychological factors through latent variables and to integrate them into mode choice behavioral modeling.Estimated results indicate that users’attitudes towards AV safety risks,their social concerns,and their flexibility concerns with ADRT strongly influence their mode choices and are strongly related to sociodemographic and travel-related factors such as age,gender,income,education,number of family members.In gen-eral,a young age,a high education level,a higher income,private car ownership,and better knowledge of AVs are positively related to attitudes towards ADRT.Females,users from large families,and users with driving licenses or long commuting times are less willing to adopt ADRT.The study’s outcomes highlight significant heterogeneities among users and can be highly valuable for policymakers,such as government authorities,in providing social support and designing policies targeting specific population groups.This will be ben-eficial in attracting more users to this emerging mobility service and contributing to sus-tainable urban development. 展开更多

The paper presents a novel demand-responsive control strategy to be equipped centrally at the district level for district heating systems.The demand-responsive feature was maintained as to both the direct and the indirect substation configurations(by basing on their rating measures)in order to achieve lowest possible return temper-ature degrees from the end-user substations.Different than the traditional weather-compensation based supply temperature resetting,the new control strategy was formulated to adjust the supply temperature at the district level as to the cooling performance at the end-user substations.Two different simulations were carried out in order to quantify the benefits of the novel control strategy as compared to the traditional weather-compensation,equipped both at the substation level and the district level.The results obtained showed that the new control strategy,when considering the electricity loss at the heat production plant,shows superiority when compared to other control strategies. 展开更多

A More Renewable-Friendly Electrical Grid: Thermal Storage Refrigeration for Demand Response in California and Denmark

Energy storage technologies, which enable demand response, are being explored throughout the world as a component of strategies for switching to renewable intermittent energy sources and reducing peak loads. This study examines thermal storage refrigeration (TSR) technology as a case study for the potential value of demand response in California and Denmark. Using technical specifications from a TSR prototype developed at UC Davis and market data from California and Denmark, the analysis examines possible business models for the TSR refrigerators and highlights market characteristics that are important to its adoption. Results suggest that the TSR technology is not a viable option in the current market environment in Denmark, but could payback in less than 6 years in California if a part of a demand response based virtual power plant. In a hypothetical future scenario involving real-time pricing in the retail market, a high degree of price volatility would be needed to make TSR technology appealing to residential consumers. Based on this analysis, an interesting area of future work would focus on the market potential of TSR technology for commercial and industrial applications. 展开更多

Demand-side management(DSM)schemes play a crucial role in managing renewable energy generation and load fluctuations by uti-lizing demand-response programmes(DRPs).This paper aims to provide a detailed overview of DRPs that help microgrid operators to keep costs and reliability within acceptable ranges.Additionally,this review paper provides a detailed economic load model for DRPs based on initial load,demand-response(DR)incentive,DR penalty and elasticity coefficients.This article also aims to guide researchers in identifying research gaps in DSM applications in microgrids by comparing various DSM schemes from different countries and regions in terms of DSM strategies,objective functions and optimization techniques.Furthermore,this study analyses the impact of DRPs on microgrid configuration from the perspective of utilities and customers,considering technical and economic performance metrics.As a result,it can be concluded that none of the studied cases provides models or guidelines for choosing appropriate DSM schemes that consider different consumer interests or load-type features.Furthermore,a few researchers have addressed the features of a modern price-based DR strategy,renewable generation-based dynamic pricing DR,which offers higher customer satisfaction than traditional DRPs. 展开更多

Assessment of the carbon emissions reduction potential in Thailand’s power sector with high penetration of variable renewable energy sources and electric vehicles in the year 2030

The power sector has substantial carbon emissions reduction potential that could achieve the new nationally determined contribution target in 2030 by increasing low-carbon technologies,e.g.variable renewable energy sources and electric vehicles(EVs).Therefore,two approaches were suggested in this work.In the first approach,Thailand’s power sector was modelled by using PLEXOS software to find the impact of the high penetration of variable renewable energy(RE)and EV charging load for the projected year 2030.The second approach proposed a demand-response and energy storage system solution with carbon pricing in the model to assess the targets.As a result,the electricity demand from charging EVs will cause a new peak demand at night,while the high variable RE penetration will cause curtailment in the power system due to excess supply at noon.Therefore,Thailand’s power sector has the potential for carbon emissions reduction by 45%with clean energy technologies,which could increase to 68%with carbon pricing,easily achievable by the nationally determined contribution target in 2030.However,these benefits could only be derived if various entities involved in the energy regulatory,transport and power sectors coordinate to implement the required technological and financial policies. 展开更多
