A country’s ability to create complex goods and diversify its lines of products is essential for addressing all types of vulnerabilities.Quantifying a country’s vulnerability to extreme climatic events,such as droug...A country’s ability to create complex goods and diversify its lines of products is essential for addressing all types of vulnerabilities.Quantifying a country’s vulnerability to extreme climatic events,such as droughts,superstorms,and other natural disasters,and its capacity for successful adaption,is an essential global need that has been ignored.This study examines the role of economic fitness(EF)in addressing climate change risk ex‐posure in BRICS countries in the context of the environmental Kuznets curve using panel data from 1995 to 2015.Panel threshold methodology is employed to ascertain the nonlinear relationship between EF and climate change risk exposure(i.e.,Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative Country Index(ND-GAIN)).In addition,empirical associations were estimated using panel-corrected standard errors,Driscoll-Kraay standard errors,and feasible generalized least squares estimation techniques.These findings demonstrated an inverted N shaped link between EF and ND-GAIN.Moreover,even after controlling for significant ND-GAIN influencing variables such as gross domestic product per capita,financial development,and urbanization,our robustness checks revealed significant and consistent findings.展开更多
Evergreen broad-leaved forestis one of the most important vegetation types in China.Because of the human activities,evergreen broad-leaved forest has been destroyed extensively,leading to degraded ecosystem.It is urge...Evergreen broad-leaved forestis one of the most important vegetation types in China.Because of the human activities,evergreen broad-leaved forest has been destroyed extensively,leading to degraded ecosystem.It is urgent to conserve and restore these natural forests in China. In this paper,the tendency and rate of species diversity restoration of the evergreen broad-leaved forest in Daming Mountain has been studied.The main resultsare as follows:(a)In subtropical mid-mountain area,species diversity in degraded evergreen broad-leaved forestcan be restored. Through analyzing b diversity index of communities in different time and space,it was found that the species composition of communities tend to be the same as that in the zonal evergreen broad-leaved forest.(b)The restoration rate of evergreen broad-leaved forest was very fast.Planting Chinese fir after clear-cutting and controlled burning of the forest,178 species appeared in a 600m^2 sample area after 20 years’natural recovering.Among the sespecies,58 were tree layer and the height of community reached 18m.The survey suggested that it would take only 20 years for the degraded forest to develop into community composed of lightdemanding broad-leaved pioneer trees and min-tolerance broad-leaved trees,and it need another 40~80 years to reach the stage consisting of min-tolerance evergreen broad-leaved trees.(c)Species number increased quickly at the early stage(2-20years)during vegetation recovering process toward the climax,and decreased at the min-stage (50-60 years),then maintained a relatively stable level at the late-stage (over 150 years).展开更多

Semiotics is used in the sphere of visual arts as a tool that helps reading the message included in a certain work.Gothic architecture,as an outcome of the rich cultural context of medieval tradition,where metaphysics...Semiotics is used in the sphere of visual arts as a tool that helps reading the message included in a certain work.Gothic architecture,as an outcome of the rich cultural context of medieval tradition,where metaphysics,numbers and geometry were indispensable tools to symbolically manifest cosmological and theological concepts,is suggested as a good example for testing this approach in the field of architecture.In this paper,a semiotic reading for one of the most distinguished works of this era;i.e.,the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris,is introduced as a model for this methodology.Among many message included in the building,such as the functional or the technical messages,this is a trial to introduce a reading,i.e.,an interpretation,of what could be called rta hidden spiritual messase,The paper comes to a conclusion that the Gothic cathedral,as represented in Notre Dame de Paris,might be perceived as an extemalization of a standing hymn that was meant to send continuous appeals of protection to Heaven.展开更多
Halomethoxybenzenes(HMBs)are a group of compounds with natural and anthropogenic origins.Here we extend a 2002e2015 survey of bromoanisoles(BAs)in the air and precipitation at Rå€o on the Swedish west coast and P...Halomethoxybenzenes(HMBs)are a group of compounds with natural and anthropogenic origins.Here we extend a 2002e2015 survey of bromoanisoles(BAs)in the air and precipitation at Rå€o on the Swedish west coast and Pallas in Subarctic Finland.New BAs data are reported for 2018 and 2019 and chlorinated HMBs are included for these and some previous years:drosophilin A methyl ether(DAME:1,2,4,5-tetrachloro-3,6-dimethoxybenzene),tetrachloroveratrole(TeCV:1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,6-dimethoxybenzene),and pentachloroanisole(PeCA).The order of abundance of HMBs at Råo was SBAs>DAME>TeCV>PeCA,whereas at Pallas the order of abundance was DAME>SBAs>TeCA>PeCA.The lower abundance of BAs at Pallas reflects its inland location,away from direct marine influence.Clausius-Clapeyron(CC)plots of log partial pressure(Pair)/Pa versus 1/T suggested distant transport at both sites for PeCA and local exchange for DAME and TeCV.BAs were dominated by distant transport at Pallas and by both local and distant sources at Rå€o.Relationships between air and precipitation concentrations were examined by scavenging ratios,SR=(ng m^(-3))precip/(ng m^(-3))air.SRs were higher at Pallas than Rå€o due to greater Henry's law partitioning of gaseous compounds into precipitation at colder temperatures.DAME is produced by terrestrial fungi.We screened 19 fungal species from Swedish forests and found seven of them contained 0.01e3.8 mg DAME per kg fresh weight.We suggest that the volatilization of DAME from fungi and forest litter containing fungal mycelia may contribute to atmospheric levels at both sites.展开更多
