Background:Mental health concerns among doctoral students have become increasingly prominent, with consistently low levels of well-being making this issue a critical focus in higher education research. This study aims to synthesize existing evidence on the mental health and well-being of doctoral students and to identify key factors and intervention strategies reported in the literature. Methods:A systematic review was conducted to examine the determinants and interventions related to doctoral students’mental health and well-being.Relevant studies were comprehensively searched in Web of Science,PubMed,Scopus, and EBSCO,with the final search conducted on September 19,2025.Records were screened according to predefined criteria:empirical studies on doctoral students’mental health or well-being published in English were included, while non-empirical,non-English,and non-doctoral-student-focused studies were excluded.A total of 56 studies were included after rigorous screening. Results:Doctoral students’mental health and well-being are shaped by multiple interacting factors across individual, academic, interpersonal, organizational, and environmental levels. Moreover, variations in gender, identity, discipline, study stage, and institutional context may further exacerbate or mitigate psychological distress.Existing intervention studies primarily focus on three approaches:psychologically oriented training,practice-based behavioral and learning programs, and relationship-or support network-based initiatives. Conclusion:This review offers integrated evidence on doctoral students’mental health and well-being and highlights the need for universities to assume greater responsibility in developing systematic and responsive support mechanisms.Current research remains limited by insufficient cross-cultural comparison,a lack of intersectional perspectives, and a scarcity of large-scale,long-term evaluations of intervention effectiveness.Future studies should give greater attention to institutional contexts and vulnerable groups while expanding the scope and rigor of intervention research. 展开更多

A total of 56 nursing doctoral theses were included in this review. The most often studied topic was cardiovascular rehabilitation care (n = 9, 16%). More recently, the most often studied topics has been health technology advancements in nursing care (n = 6, 10.7%). The common trend of study methods was to be quantitative in nature. Of the total, 35 out of 56 were quantitative studies. Half were experimental/ quasi-experimental research studies (n = 28, 50%). For theoretical foundations or applications, the majority (n = 21, 36%) of doctoral theses had no specific theoretical/conceptual models as study frameworks. This trend indicates that there is space for improving the theoretical and philosophical foundation of nursing research in Hong Kong. For the contributions of doctoral thesis research, Hong Kong nursing scholars place more emphasis on direct enhancement of clinical practice or the improvement of patient outcomes. This review provides concrete evidence of the status of nursing research and knowledge development in Hong Kong nursing. 展开更多

Since the reform and opening up, as China's economic and social development, China's education has also made rapid develop-ment. Thanks to the rapid growth of total economic output, the need for high-level manpower is increasing, which has provided an good opportunity for the rapid development of doctoral education in China. China's doctoral education started in 1978, when the first batch of 18 doctoral students were enrolled. In 1981, China began to implement a formal degree system, the second year, the first batch of six doc-toral students were granted Ph.D. degree. At present, China has more than 300 colleges and universities which have the right to authorize a doctorate, while the United States only has 253. So far China has cultivated more than 50,000 Ph.D. and become the largest country in the world in Ph.D. Cultivation. 展开更多

The provision of feedback on student work has been a common and even recommended practice across levels of education throughout the years. In the field of academic writing pedagogy, giving feedback has become a crucial part of the teaching/learning process given that composition skills are quite intricate and difficult to master, requiring a cycle of continual drafting, feedback and re-drafting until a final version is produced.Teacher feedback appears to be the most utilized in current classrooms, with peer feedback beginning to be applied in many disciplines as well in recent times.Nevertheless,it appears that most research studies on the uses and the benefits of teacher and peer feedback focus on undergraduate students with graduate students’voices less contemplated in this regard.Considering this potential research gap as well as the fact that doctoral students are often more skilled and competent writers, this study analyses these students’attitudes and views toward the need of teacher and peer feedback in a research writing in English course delivered in a Finnish university with a mix of international and local students. The results seem to indicate that both types of feedback, but specifically a combination of both, were well-accepted and highly-regarded by these students, particularly as far as reader-friendliness is concerned. 展开更多

The global“PhD glut”has emerged as a critical issue with the rapid expansion of doctoral education. This oversupply has caused challenges such as intense competition for academic positions and a decline in the perceived value of doctoral degrees. To address these issues,a shift in the definition of the PhD is needed, moving towards a more versatile qualification that meets the evolving needs of society and the labor market. In the field of Agricultural and Biological Engineering(ABE),a“Solution-Driven PhD”model is proposed, integrating doctoral training with agricultural engineering enterprises and modern agricultural industry clusters. This paper explores the multifaceted challenges of the PhD glut, the need for redefining doctoral education, and the specific opportunities and strategies for transforming ABE doctoral programs to better align with global demands and future development needs. 展开更多

In the era of digital transformation, generative artificial intelligence(GenAI)has become an important tool for enhancing research efficiency. However, its specific impact on research output remains underexplored.Based on the data from the 2024 national doctoral graduate survey, this study investigated the impact of GenAI on doctoral students’research output using propensity score matching and inverse probability weighted regression adjustment methods. The findings showed that GenAI use increased doctoral students’total research output by 6.5%,international publications by 6.9%,and top-tier journal publications by 16.5%.However,the technological dividends were not equally shared, with factors such as gender and age constituting substantial barriers to using GenAI.Moreover, heterogeneity analysis revealed that the benefits of GenAI use varied significantly across different disciplines and academic environments. For doctoral students with insufficient mentor guidance, although GenAI contributed to an increase in the total number of papers and international journal publications,it failed to yield significant benefits for top-tier journal publications.Accordingly, this study recommends the systematic integration of GenAI into doctoral training systems, the development of intelligent resource-sharing platforms, and the strengthening of ethical norms and fairness safeguards for GenAI use. These measures aim to promote the rational application of the technology and the equitable sharing of digital dividends, thereby fostering the high quality and sustainable development of doctoral education. 展开更多
