Effects of cusped magnetic field on the discharge characteristics of helicon plasma

A new magnetic field configuration is proposed by introducing a cusped field to the helicon plasma thruster(HPT),and the effects of the cusped field on the discharge characteristics of the HPT are investigated.The experimental results show that the thruster can still achieve a stable W mode discharge with the additional cusped field,while the discharge conditions have been changed so that a higher RF power is required to achieve the W mode under the same experimental conditions.However,the ion density in the plume region is increased by at least one order of magnitude and the ion flux density is increased by a factor of 4 to 5.The ionization enhancement is attributed to the change in magnetic field configuration,which improves the energy coupling efficiency and the ability to confine charged particles(particularly electrons).This magnetic confinement could employ more electrons to ionize the working medium atoms,and the ionization rate is enhanced.The increase in ion density leads to a reduction in the energy available for ion acceleration,resulting in a slight decrease in ion energy. 展开更多

Previous studies have shown that leak electro ns in cusped field thrusters can move along the channel axis to the anode after crossing the magnetic cusp on the exit.In this paper,a onedimensional fluid model is built along two typical electron paths to study the influence of leak electrons on the discharge characteristics of a cusped field thruster,considering the electron temperature equation.It is found that the frequencies of low-frequency oscillations increase with a decrease in the proportion of leak electrons,which is related to an increase in the ion speed in the channel.Simulation results show that the position of the peak electron temperature is near the magnetic cusp on the exit and the position of the peak electron density is located downstream from the middle magnetic tip.With a decrease in the proportion of the leak electrons,the peak electron temperature and peak electron density decrease and the position of the peak electron density moves away from the exit,which is related to a decrease in the potential fall on the exit and an increase in confinement of electrons to the middle magnetic cusp. 展开更多

Magnetic mirror used as an efficient tool to confine plasma has been widely adopted in many different areas especially in recent cusped field thrusters. In order to check the influence of magnetic mirror effect on the plasma distribution in a cusped field thruster, three different radii of the discharge channel(6 mm, 4 mm, and 2 mm) in a cusped field thruster are investigated by using Particle-in-Cell Plus Monte Carlo(PIC-MCC) simulated method, under the condition of a fixed axial length of the discharge channel and the same operating parameters. It is found that magnetic cusps inside the small radius discharge channel cannot confine electrons very well. Thus, the electric field is hard to establish. With the reduction of the discharge channel’s diameter, more electrons will escape from cusps to the centerline area near the anode due to a lower magnetic mirror ratio. Meanwhile, the leak width of the cusped magnetic field will increase at the cusp. By increasing the magnetic field strength in a small radius model of a cusped field thruster, the negative effect caused by the weak magnetic mirror effect can be partially compensated. Therefore, according to engineering design, the increase of magnetic field strength can contribute to obtaining a good performance, when the radial distance between the magnets and the inner surface of the discharge channel is relatively big. 展开更多

The microwave discharge cusped field thruster is a novel concept of electric micropropulsion device,which operatesμN level thrust in low mass flow rate conditions,making use of a coaxial transmission line resonator.With its advantages of low thrust noise and high thrust resolution over a wide range of thrust,the thruster has emerged as a candidate thruster for the space-borne gravitational wave detection mission.The cathode effects commonly exist in many kinds of electric propulsion,and they are typically significant in micropropulsions.In order to find out the cathode position effects on a microwave discharge cusped field thruster,a thermionic cathode is mounted on a cross-slider for coupling.Under different cathode positions,the plume is analyzed by a Faraday probe and a retarding potential analyzer to analyze the performance and discharge characteristics.The results show that the magnetic mirror effect leads to significant degradation of anode current and an increase in low-energy ion ratio as the cathode moves away from the thruster exit.The electron conduction route also significantly impacts anode current efficiency,related to the cathode-exit distance and the thruster magnetic topology. 展开更多

In this paper,we focus on peaked traveling wave solutions of the modified highly nonlinear Novikov equation by dynamical systems approach.We obtain a traveling wave system which is a singular planar dynamical system with three singular straight lines,and derive all possible phase portraits under corresponding parameter conditions.Then we show the existence and dynamics of two types of peaked traveling wave solutions including peakons and periodic cusp wave solutions.The exact explicit expressions of two peakons are given.Besides,we also derive smooth solitary wave solutions,periodic wave solutions,compacton solutions,and kink-like(antikink-like)solutions.Numerical simulations are further performed to verify the correctness of the results.Most importantly,peakons and periodic cusp wave solutions are newly found for the equation,which extends the previous results. 展开更多

Solar wind charge exchange produces emissions in the soft X-ray energy range which can enable the study of near-Earth space regions such as the magnetopause,the magnetosheath and the polar cusps by remote sensing techniques.The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)and Lunar Environment heliospheric X-ray Imager(LEXI)missions aim to obtain soft Xray images of near-Earth space thanks to their Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)instruments.While earlier modeling works have already simulated soft X-ray images as might be obtained by SMILE SXI during its mission,the numerical models used so far are all based on the magnetohydrodynamics description of the space plasma.To investigate the possible signatures of ion-kinetic-scale processes in soft Xray images,we use for the first time a global hybrid-Vlasov simulation of the geospace from the Vlasiator model.The simulation is driven by fast and tenuous solar wind conditions and purely southward interplanetary magnetic field.We first produce global X-ray images of the dayside near-Earth space by placing a virtual imaging satellite at two different locations,providing meridional and equatorial views.We then analyze regional features present in the images and show that they correspond to signatures in soft X-ray emissions of mirrormode wave structures in the magnetosheath and flux transfer events(FTEs)at the magnetopause.Our results suggest that,although the time scales associated with the motion of those transient phenomena will likely be significantly smaller than the integration time of the SMILE and LEXI imagers,mirror-mode structures and FTEs can cumulatively produce detectable signatures in the soft X-ray images.For instance,a local increase by 30%in the proton density at the dayside magnetopause resulting from the transit of multiple FTEs leads to a 12%enhancement in the line-of-sight-and time-integrated soft X-ray emissivity originating from this region.Likewise,a proton density increase by 14%in the magnetosheath associated with mirror-mode structures can result in an enhancement in the soft X-ray signal by 4%.These are likely conservative estimates,given that the solar wind conditions used in the Vlasiator run can be expected to generate weaker soft X-ray emissions than the more common denser solar wind.These results will contribute to the preparatory work for the SMILE and LEXI missions by providing the community with quantitative estimates of the effects of small-scale,transient phenomena occurring on the dayside. 展开更多

Under different parametric conditions, various sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of analytical and non-analytical solutions of the singular system are given by using singular traveling wave theory. For certain special cases, some explicit and exact parametric representations of traveling wave solutions are derived such as analytical periodic waves and non-analytical periodic cusp waves. 利用3D PIC软件和乌克兰开发的电子光学计算软件TAU对二次谐波回旋行波管Cusp电子枪进行模拟,提取电子的3维运动速度计算横纵速度比。在阳极电压和阴极电流变化的条件下,对电子速度比和速度零散随之而变化的情况进行了模拟,得到平均速度... 利用3D PIC软件和乌克兰开发的电子光学计算软件TAU对二次谐波回旋行波管Cusp电子枪进行模拟,提取电子的3维运动速度计算横纵速度比。在阳极电压和阴极电流变化的条件下,对电子速度比和速度零散随之而变化的情况进行了模拟,得到平均速度比1.1和平均速度零散9.5%的结果。基于电子平均半径,并根据电子平均半径与横向速度、纵向速度的关系提出了一种实验测量速度比的方法。当电子轰击荧光屏玻璃时,玻璃上的荧光物质感应到光斑,测量空心光斑的平均半径可计算得到电子速度比,其结果与模拟值误差15%。 展开更多
