The saturated clays model was formulatedin the framework of critical state soil mechanics and modified Cam-clay model. The existing model hasbeen generalized to simulate the experimentally observed behavior of unsaturated clays by introducingBishop's stress and suction as independent stress parameters and modifying the hardening rule and yieldcriterion to take into account the role of suction. Also, according to previous studies, an increase intemperature causes a reduction in specific volume. A reduction in suction (wetting) for a given confiningstress may induce an irreversible volumetric compression (collapse). Thus an increase in suction (drying)raises a specific volume i.e. the movement of normal consolidation line (NCL) to higher values of voidratio. However, some experimental data confirm the assumption that this reduction is dependent on thestress level of soil element. A generalized approach considering the effect of stress level on themagnitude of clays thermal dependency in compression plane is proposed in this study. The number ofmodeling parameters is kept to a minimum, and they all have clear physical interpretations, to facilitatethe usefulness of model for practical applications. A step-by-step procedure used for parameter calibrationis also described. The model is finally evaluated using a comprehensive set of experimental datafor the thermo-mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils.2015 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Calculations were carded out for critical loads of potential acidity, actual acidity, sulfur and nitrogen, with values in extents of 0-3.5, 0-14.0, 0-26.0 and 0-3.5 kmol/(hrnE.year), respectively. These values were comparable to previously reported results and reflected the influences of vegetation and soil characteristics on the soil acid buffering capacity. Simulations of SO2 emission and sulfur deposition in this study showed that sulfur deposition core areas mirrored SO2 emission centers. The prediction of sulfur deposition after 20% and 40% reduction of SO2 emission suggested that the reduction of area sources contributed greatly to the decrease of sulfur deposition. Thus, abatement of area source emissions could be the primary way to mitigate sulfur deposition in Guangdong to meet both the provincial and national regulations of air pollution control.展开更多

According to overload testing with a geological model and the measured time series of installed perpendicular lines, the space and time evolution characteristics of the arch dam structure were analyzed, and its mechanical performance was evaluated. Subsequently, the deformation centroid of the deflective curve was suggested to indicate the magnitude and unique distribution rules for a typical dam section using the measured deformation values at multi-monitoring points. The ellipse equations of the critical ellipsoid for the centroid were derived from the historical measured time series. Hydrostatic and seasonal components were extracted from the measured deformation values with a traditional statistical model, and residuals were adopted as a grey component. A time-varying grey model was developed to accurately predict the evolution of the deformation behavior of the ultrahigh arch dam during future operation. In the developed model, constant coefficients were modified so as to be time-dependent functions, and the prediction accuracy was significantly improved through introduction of a forgetting factor. Finally, the critical threshold was estimated, and predicted ellipsoids were derived for the Xiaowan arch dam. The findings of this study can provide technical support for safety evaluation of the actual operation of ultrahigh arch dams and help to provide early warning of abnormal changes.展开更多

The main characteristics of the model are that both particle and energy avalanches of sand grains are considered simultaneously. Properties of intermittent transport and improved confinement are analyzed in detail. The results imply that the intermittent phenomenon such as blobs in the low confinement mode as well as edge localized modes in the high confinement mode observed in tokamak experiments are not only determined by the edge plasma physics, but also affected by the core plasma dynamics.展开更多

文摘Fundamental physics often confronts complex symbolic problems with few guiding exemplars or established principles. While artificial intelligence(AI)offers promise, its typical need for vast datasets to learn from hinders its use in these information-scarce frontiers. We introduce learning at criticality(LaC),a reinforcement learning scheme that tunes large language models(LLMs)to a sharp learning transition, addressing this information scarcity. At this transition,LLMs achieve peak generalization from minimal data, exemplified by 7-digit base-7 addition-a test of nontrivial arithmetic reasoning. To elucidate this peak,we analyze a minimal concept-network model designed to capture the essence of how LLMs might link tokens.Trained on a single exemplar, this model also undergoes a sharp learning transition. This transition exhibits hallmarks of a second-order phase transition, notably power-law distributed solution path lengths. At this critical point, the system maximizes a“critical thinking pattern”crucial for generalization, enabled by the underlying scale-free exploration. This suggests LLMs reach peak performance by operating at criticality, where such explorative dynamics enable the extraction of underlying operational rules. We demonstrate LaC in quantum field theory:an 8B-parameter LLM,tuned to its critical point by LaC using a few exemplars of symbolic Matsubara sums, solves unseen,higher-order problems, significantly outperforming far larger models.LaC thus leverages critical phenomena,a physical principle,to empower AI for complex,data-sparse challenges in fundamental physics.

文摘The deformation energy(Wd)of soil-like tectonic coal is crucial for investigating the mechanism of coal and gas outbursts.Tectonic coal has a significant nonlinear constitutive relationship, which makes traditional elastic-based models for computing Wdunsuitable.Inspired by critical state soil mechanics, this study theoretically established a new calculation model of Wdsuitable for the coal with nonlinear deformation characteristics. In the new model, the relationship between energy and stress no longer follows the square law(observed in traditional linear elastic models)but exhibits a power function, with the theoretical value of the power exponent ranging between 1 and 2.Hydrostatic cyclic loading and unloading experiments were conducted on four groups of tectonic coal samples and one group of intact coal samples. The results indicated that the relationship between Wdand stress for both intact and tectonic coal follows a power law.The exponents for intact and tectonic coal are close to 2 and 1,respectively.The stress-strain curve of intact coal exhibits small deformation and linear characteristics, whereas the stress-strain curves of tectonic coal show large deformation and nonlinear characteristics. The study specifically investigates the role of coal viscosity in the cyclic loading/unloading process. The downward bending in the unloading curves can be attributed to the time-dependent characteristics of coal, particularly its viscoelastic behavior.Based on experimental statistics, the calculation model of Wdwas further simplified. The simplified model involves only one unknown parameter, which is the power exponent between Wdand stress. The measured Wdof the coal samples increases with the number of load cycles. This phenomenon is attributed to coal's viscoelastic deformation.Within the same stress, the Wdof tectonic coal is an order of magnitude greater than that of intact coal. The calculation model of Wdproposed in this paper provides a new tool for studying the energy principle of coal and gas outbursts.

The findings of this study can provide technical support for safety evaluation of the actual operation of ultrahigh arch dams and help to provide early warning of abnormal changes.
文摘Widespread implementation of electronic health records has led to the increased use of artificial intelligence(AI)and computer modeling in clinical medicine. The early recognition and treatment of critical illness are central to good outcomes but are made difficult by,among other things, the complexity of the environment and the often non-specific nature of the clinical presentation.Increasingly,AI applications are being proposed as decision supports for busy or distracted clinicians,to address this challenge.Data driven“associative”AI models are built from retrospective data registries with missing data and imprecise timing.Associative AI models lack transparency, often ignore causal mechanisms, and, while potentially useful in improved prognostication, have thus far had limited clinical applicability. To be clinically useful,AI tools need to provide bedside clinicians with actionable knowledge.Explicitly addressing causal mechanisms not only increases validity and replicability of the model, but also adds transparency and helps gain trust from the bedside clinicians for real world use of AI models in teaching and patient care.
文摘Using a Gleeble-1500D thermal-mechanical simulator, the hot-deformation behavior and critical strain in the dynamic recrystallization of SA508Gr.4N steel were investigated by compression tests from 1050 to 1250℃ with strain rates from 0.001 to 0.1 s^-1.Stress-strain curves were fitted by a nonlinear fitting method.Based on these tests, the flow stress constitutive equations of the work-hardening dynamical recovery period and dynamical recrystallization period Were established for SA508Gr.4N steel. The stress-strain curves of SA508Gr.4N steel predicted by the established models are in a good agreement with the experimental ones.Curves of ln θ -ε and --(a)(lnθ)/(a)ε-ε (where θ is the work-hardening rate and ε is true strain)were plotted from experimental data.A critical strain (εc)and a peak strain (εp)of dynamic recrystallization were obtained and exhibited a linear relationship,i.e.,εc =0.386εp.The predicted model of εc could be described by the equation of εc=1.604×10^-3Z^0.127.
文摘The buckling and post-buckling response of a single-degree-of-freedom mechanical model is re-examined in this work, within the context of nonlinear stability and bifurcation theory. This system has been reported in pioneer as well as in more recent literature to exhibit all kinds of distinct critical points. Its response is thoroughly discussed, the effect of all parameters involved is extensively examined, including imperfection sensitivity, and the results obtained lead to the important conclusion that the model is possibly associated with the butterfly singularity, a fact which will be validated by the contents of a companion paper, based on catastrophe theory.

文摘Artificial intelligence(AI)and digital twin models of various systems have long been used in industry to test products quickly and efficiently.Use of digital twins in clinical medicine caught attention with the development of Archimedes,an AI model of diabetes,in 2003.More recently,AI models have been applied to the fields of cardiology, endocrinology, and undergraduate medical education. The use of digital twins and AI thus far has focused mainly on chronic disease management, their application in the field of critical care medicine remains much less explored. In neurocritical care, current AI technology focuses on interpreting electroencephalography, monitoring intracranial pressure, and prognosticating outcomes.AI models have been developed to interpret electroencephalograms by helping to annotate the tracings, detecting seizures, and identifying brain activation in unresponsive patients. In this mini-review we describe the challenges and opportunities in building an actionable AI model pertinent to neurocritical care that can be used to educate the newer generation of clinicians and augment clinical decision making.

文摘A self-organized criticality model of a thermal sandpile is formulated for the first time to simulate the dynamic process with interaction between avalanche events on the fast time scale and diffusive transports on the slow time scale. The main characteristics of the model are that both particle and energy avalanches of sand grains are considered simultaneously. Properties of intermittent transport and improved confinement are analyzed in detail. The results imply that the intermittent phenomenon such as blobs in the low confinement mode as well as edge localized modes in the high confinement mode observed in tokamak experiments are not only determined by the edge plasma physics, but also affected by the core plasma dynamics.
