Methods Pre-surgical evaluation was performed by videoEEG monitoring using 24 channel recording. Thirty six epilepsy patients could be attributed to two groups: 28 patients had spontaneous seizures, and the other 8 patients whose seizures were induced by bemegride. Another 11 persons with confirmed psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) served as control group. Blood samples were obtained at five points: wake (08:00 a.m.), sleep (00:00 a.m.), and shortly before, during and after an epileptic seizure. The serum ACTH and cortisol were measured and analyzed by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Results The levels of ACTH and cortisol in serum underwent significant changes: declining below the average sleep-level shortly before seizures, increasing during seizures, and far above the average wake-level after seizures (P 〈 0.001). Such changes did not occur in the control group (P 〉 0.05). The ACTH and cortisol levels had no significant difference between spontaneous group and bemegride-induced group (P 〉 0.05). Conclusion The serum concentrations of ACTH and cortisol during sleep seizures are linked with pre-ictal and ictal EEG changes in epilepsy patients.展开更多

This review integrates established and new information on the biological role of ovarian progesterone (P4), prostaglandins (PGs), interferon tau (IFNT) and cortisol in endometrial function and conceptus elongation. Progesterone is secreted by the ovarian corpus luteum (CL) and is the unequivocal hormone of pregnancy. Prostaglandins (PGs) and cortisol are produced by both the epithelial cells of the endometrium and the trophectoderm of the elongating conceptus. In contrast, IFNT is produced solely by the conceptus trophectoderm and is the maternal recognition of pregnancy signa that inhibits production of luteolytic pulses of PGF2α by the endometrium to maintain the CL and thus production of P4. Available results in sheep support the idea that the individual, interactive, and coordinated actions of P4, PGs, IFNT and cortisol regulate conceptus elongation and implantation by controlling expression of genes in the endometrium and/or trophectoderm. An increased knowledge of conceptus-endometrial interactions during early pregnancy in ruminants is necessary to understand and elucidate the causes of infertility and recurrent early pregnancy loss and provide new strategies to improve fertility and thus reproductive efficiency.展开更多

We aimed to evaluate prognostic efficacy of cortisol and TFTs in critically ill poisoned patients admitted to toxicology intensive care unit(ICU).METHODS: In a prospective study of consecutively enrolled subjects admitted to the toxicology ICU, lab analyses included TFTs(total T3 and T4 as well as TSH) and cortisol levels drawn between 8 am–10 am during period of the first 24 hours post-ingestion/exposure. Simplified Acute Physiology Score Ⅱ(SAPS Ⅱ) and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation Ⅱ(APACHE Ⅱ) were recorded. All scores were compared to detect the best prognostic factor. Type of poisoning was also included.RESULTS: In 200 patients evaluated, 129 were male and mean age was 31 years. In general, SAPS Ⅱ, T4, and cortisol could prognosticate death. After regression analysis, only cortisol had such efficacy(P=0.04; OR=1.06; 95%CI=1.05–1.08; cut-off=42 μg/d L; sensitivity=70%; specificity=82%). Between aluminium phosphide(ALP)-and non ALP-poisoned patients, level of consciousness, mean arterial pressure, and cortisol level could prognosticate death in ALP poisoning(all Ps<0.001 in both uni and multivariate analyses). Median(interquartile range; IQR) GCS was 7(6, 10) and 15(8, 15) in non-ALP and ALP-poisoned patients(P<0.003). SAPS Ⅱ and APACHE Ⅱ could not prognosticate death at all.CONCLUSION: Cortisol best prognosticated outcomes for subjects admitted to the toxicology ICU. Its level is higher in ALP-poisoned patients probably due to the higher stress while they remain conscious till the final stages of toxicity and are aware of deterioration of their clinical condition or may be due to their significantly lower blood pressures.展开更多

By using these fluids instead of blood, the biosensor becomes noninvasive and is less stressful to the end user, who may be a small child or a farm animal.Electroreduced graphene oxide(e-RGO) was used as a synergistic platform for signal amplification and template for bioconjugation for the sensing mechanism on a screenprinted electrode. The cortisol and lactate antibodies were bioconjugated to the e-RGO using covalent carbodiimide chemistry. Label-free electrochemical chronoamperometric detection was used to analyze the response to the desired biomolecules over the wide detection range. A detection limit of 0.1 ng mL^(-1) for cortisol and 0.1 mM for lactate was established and a correlation between concentration and current was observed. A portable, handheld potentiostat assembled with Bluetooth communication and battery operation enables the developed system for point-of-care applications. A sandwich-like structure containing the sensing mechanisms as a prototype was designed to secure the biosensor to skin and use capillary action to draw sweat or other fluids toward the sensing mechanism. Overall, the immunosensor shows remarkable specificity, sensitivity as well as the noninvasive and point-of-care capabilities and allows the biosensor to be used as a versatile sensing platform in both developed and developing countries.展开更多

Methods The levels of cortisol (CORT), testosterone (T), prolactin (PRL), and growth hormone (GH) in saliva from 20 aggressive students and 20 non-aggressive control students were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The students were matched for their gender, age, grade, stage of pubertal development, and economic status of their families. Results The salivary T levels were 22.20±14.50 pg/mL and 19.54±12.52 pg/mL in aggressive male and female students, 13.20±6.85 pg/mL and 5.24±3.03 pg/mL in non-aggressive male and female students (P〈0.05). The male aggressive students had a lower level of CORT in saliva than non-aggressive male students (P〈0.05). There were no significant differences in the salivary levels of PRL or GH between the aggressive and non-aggressive groups. Correlation analysis revealed a negative relationship in male students between the salivary CORT levels and the aggression factor scores of the child behavior checklist (CBCL). In addition, the data also showed a positive relationship between the salivary T levels and the aggression factor scores of CBCL in female students. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the salivary CORT level was an independent predictive factor for aggressive behaviors in adolescent boys. The higher the CORT level, the less aggressive the boys were. Conclusion CORT and T levels may play a certain role in adolescent aggressive behaviors.展开更多

文摘The oviduct epithelium is the initial maternal contact site for embryos after fertilization, offering the microenviron-ment before implantation. This early gestation period is particularly sensitive to stress, which can cause reduced fertil-ity and reproductive disorders in mammals.Nevertheless, the local impact of elevated stress hormones on the ovi-duct epithelium has received limited attention to date, except for a few reports on polyovulatory species like mice and pigs.In this study,we focused on the effects of chronic maternal stress on cattle, given its association with infertil-ity issues in this monoovulatory species.Bovine oviduct epithelial cells(BOEC)differentiated at the air–liquid interface(ALI)were stimulated with 250 nmol/L cortisol for 1 or 3 weeks.Subsequently, they were assessed for morphology, bioelectrical properties, and gene expression related to oviduct function, glucocorticoid pathway, cortisol metabo-lism,inflammation,and apoptosis. Results revealed adverse effects of cortisol on epithelium structure, featured by deciliation, vacuole formation, and multilayering.Additionally, cortisol exposure led to an increase in transepithelial potential difference, downregulated mRNA expression of the major glucocorticoid receptor(NR3C1),upregulated the expression of cortisol-responsive genes(FKBP5,TSC22D3),and significant downregulation of oviductal glycopro-tein 1(OVGP1)and steroid receptors PGR and ESR1.The systematic comparison to a similar experiment previously performed by us in porcine oviduct epithelial cells, indicated that bovine cultures were more susceptible to elevated cortisol levels than porcine. The distinct responses between both species are likely linked to their divergence in the cortisol-induced expression changes of HSD11B2,an enzyme controlling the cellular capacity to metabolise cortisol. These findings provide insights into the species-specific reactions and reproductive consequences triggered by maternal stress.

文摘BACKGROUND Autonomous cortisol secretion(ACS)is linked to a higher prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.AIM To evaluate glucose and bone metabolism in patients with ACS using a continuous glucose monitoring system(CGMS)and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA).METHODS Patients diagnosed with ACS,including Cushing syndrome, mild ACS(MACS),and nonfunctional adrenal incidentaloma(NFAI),were recruited for this study.Glucose variability and glycemic status were assessed using CGMS.Regional bone mineral content(BMC),bone mineral density(BMD),and bone area(BA)were evaluated using DXA.CGMS-and DXA-derived parameters were compared across the subgroups of ACS.Correlation analysis was performed to examine relationships between varying degrees of cortisol secretion, measured by cortisol after 1 mg overnight dexamethasone suppression test(DST)or 24-hour urine free cortisol(24h UFC),and CGMS-or DXA-derived parameters.RESULTS A total of 64 patients with ACS were included in this study:19 with Cushing syndrome,11 with MACS,and 34 with NFAI.Glucose variability, time above range(TAR),and time in range(TIR)along with specific areal BMC,BMD,and BA,differed significantly between groups of Cushing syndrome and NFAI.A significant positive correlation was observed between glucose variability or TAR and cortisol after 1 mg overnight DST or 24h UFC.By contrast,TIR,along with regional BMC,BMD,and BA,were negatively correlated with varying degrees of cortisol secretion.CONCLUSION Glucose and bone metabolism impairments are on a continuum alteration from NFAI to MACS and Cushing syndrome.Prompt attention should be given to these patients with ACS,especially those with mild hormone secretion.Parameters of glucose variability and glycemic status along with bone condition in regions rich in cancellous bone will provide valuable information.
文摘Objective Measuring the serum concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol in epileptic seizures during sleep to investigate their link to the EEG changes. Conclusion The serum concentrations of ACTH and cortisol during sleep seizures are linked with pre-ictal and ictal EEG changes in epilepsy patients.

文摘The majority of pregnancy loss in ruminants occurs during the first three weeks after conception, particularly during the period of conceptus elongation that occurs prior to pregnancy recognition and implantation. An increased knowledge of conceptus-endometrial interactions during early pregnancy in ruminants is necessary to understand and elucidate the causes of infertility and recurrent early pregnancy loss and provide new strategies to improve fertility and thus reproductive efficiency.
文摘BACKGROUND: Prognostic value of cortisol and thyroid function tests(TFTs) has previously been evaluated in medical ICUs. Its level is higher in ALP-poisoned patients probably due to the higher stress while they remain conscious till the final stages of toxicity and are aware of deterioration of their clinical condition or may be due to their significantly lower blood pressures.

Overall, the immunosensor shows remarkable specificity, sensitivity as well as the noninvasive and point-of-care capabilities and allows the biosensor to be used as a versatile sensing platform in both developed and developing countries.

文摘Objective To explore the endocfinal factors which influence the aggressive behavior of adolescents. Conclusion CORT and T levels may play a certain role in adolescent aggressive behaviors.
文摘BACKGROUND Cerebral hemorrhage is a common and severe complication of hypertension in middle-aged and elderly men.AIM To investigate the correlation between vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)and cortisol(Cor)and the prognosis of patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage.METHODS A hundred patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage were enrolled from January 2020 to December 2022 and assigned to the hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage group.Another 100 healthy people who were examined at our hospital during the same period were selected and assigned to the healthy group.Peripheral venous blood was collected, and serum Cor and VGEF levels were measured through enzyme linked immunosorbent assay.RESULTS A statistically significant difference in serum Cor and VGEF levels was observed among patients with varying degrees of neurological impairment(P<0.05).Serum Cor and VGEF levels were significantly higher in the severe group than in the mild-to-moderate group.Cor and VEGF levels were significantly higher in patients with poor prognoses than in those with good prognoses.Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that serum Cor and VGEF levels were independent factors affecting hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Cor and VGEF are associated with the occurrence and development of hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage and are significantly associated with neurological impairment and prognosis of patients.

文摘Purpose:To evaluate APT(APT)for its analgesic effects and influence on serum cortisol and IL-6 levels after cesarean section.Methods:108 puerperae prepared for cesarean section were randomly divided into three treatment groups:APT,patient-controlled intravenous analgesia(PCIA),and a combination of APT and PCIA.The degrees of incision pain(including pain at rest and pain evoked by changing position in bed)and oxytocin-mediated uterine cramping pain were determined using a visual analogue scale(VAS).The serum concentrations of cortisol and IL-6 were measured preoperatively and postoperatively. Results:Uterine cramping pain was lower in the APT group than the PCIA group and lowest in the combination therapy group.Incision pain was similar between the APT group and the PCIA group but lower in the combination therapy group. On the second morning after surgery, the serum concentrations of cortisol and IL-6 were similar between the APT group and the PCIA group but lower in the combination therapy group. The extent of pain was highly related to cortisol levels and moderately related to IL-6 levels. Conclusion:APT can relieve uterine cramping pain after cesarean section, and in combination with PCIA can decrease serum levels of cortisol and IL-6.

文摘DEAR EDITOR,Major depressive disorder (MDD), commonly known as depression, is a mental disease characterized by a core symptom of low mood. It lasts at least two weeks (Badamasi et al., 2019;Wang et al., 2019) and is frequently accompanied by low self-esteem, loss of interest in routinely enjoyable activities, low energy, and unexplained pain (Huey et al., 2018;Park et al., 2012;Post & Warden, 2018;Rice et al., 2019;Xiao et al., 2018). Approximately 2%–8% of adults with MDD commit suicide (Richards & O'Hara, 2014;Strakowski & Nelson, 2015), and around half of suicidal individuals suffer depression or other mood disorders (Bachmann, 2018).
文摘Objective:To investigate the levels of serum Cortisol in patients with uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum(P.falciparum) malaria in an area of unstable malaria transmission in eastern Sudan. Methods:The concentrations of Cortisol were measured in sera of 25 patients with uncomplicated P.fylciparum malaria(at presentation,24 h and 7 d later) and 25 healthy volunteers using radioimmunoassay gamma counter. Results:There was no significant difference in mean(SD) of total Cortisol levels in patients with malaria in comparison with the control group;602.2(369.6) vs. 449.2(311.7) ng/mL,P=0.12.In patients with uncomplicated P.falciparum malaria, the mean(SD) presenting Cortisol levels were significantly higher in comparison to the levels on day 7;602.2 (369.6) vs.373.6(139.1) ng/mL,P=0.009.In the patients with uncomplicated P.falciparum malaria (on presentation) Cortisol levels were not correlated with initial temperature or the presenting parasitaemia. Conclusions:Thus,Cortisol levels were not significantly different between the patients and the controls.
