During recent years, the axial-flus PMSM with contra-rotating rotors has become a hot topic in academic research due to its high efficiency and simple structure. However, its back-EMF may be distorted under the condition of different angular positions. This paper investigates characteristics of the novel motor used for contra-propeller driving.Considering the torque ripple and current oscillation under unbalanced load condition, this paper analyzes the distorted back-EMF of the machine when its two rotors get different angular positions during rotating. The analysis results are validated by transient-magnetic 3-D FEA method, which the 3-D FEA software is used to model this motor and transient simulations are carried out to obtain its magnetic characteristic and main performances.A main focus is put on the back-EMF characteristic with different angular positions between the two rotors.Furthermore, the characteristic of torque production under unbalanced load is investigated. Finally,a prototype motor is fabricated to validate the analyses of this paper. 展开更多

A sirocco fan using contra-rotating rotors in which an inner rotor is settled inside the sirocco fan rotor and each rotor rotates in an opposite direction was proposed for the purpose of getting the higher pressure and making the structure of a sirocco fan more compact. If the high discharge pressure is obtained with the adoption of the contra-rotating rotors, it could be used for various purposes. Pressure coefficient of a sirocco fan with contra-rotating rotors is 2.5 times as high as the conventional sirocco fan and the maximum efficiency point of contra-rotating rotors shifts to larger flow rate than a conventional sirocco fan. On the other hand, it was clarified from the flow measurement results that circumferential velocity component at the outlet of the outer rotor of contra-rotating ro- tors becomes larger than a conventional one. In the present paper, the performance of a conventional sirocco fan and a sirocco fan with contra-rotating rotors are shown and the internal flow field at the outlet of outer rotor of both cases is clarified. Then, the effect of different kind of contra-rotating rotors on the performance and internal flow field is investigated and the rotor design with higher performance would be discussed. 展开更多

Focusing on the unclear mechanism of aerodynamic interference in overlapping rotors of heavy-load electric vertical take-off and landing(eVTOL)aircraft, this paper aims to reveal the aerodynamic interference characteristics and flow field evolution laws of overlapping rotor configurations in hovering conditions through numerical simulation methods. The research method involves constructing a computational model for rotor flow fields and aerodynamic characteristics based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)equations and the Spalart-Allmaras(S-A)turbulence model. The dynamic simulation of rotor rotational motion was achieved by using the moving nested grid technology. The reliability of the computational method was ensured through the grid independence verification and the comparison with experimental data. The research results indicate that in overlapping rotor systems, rotorⅡexperiences a decrease in thrust, significant power fluctuations, and reduced hovering efficiency due to continuous interference from the adjacent rotor’s wake and blade-vortex interactions.Blade-tip vortices undergo breakage, fusion, and secondary rolling in the overlapping region, forming large-scale turbulent structures that lead to attenuation of the induced velocity field and aerodynamic efficiency losses.Additionally, the interaction between the rotor downwash and the fuselage triggers a“fountain effect”and a sudden increase in surface pressure on the fuselage, exacerbating flow field distortion.Based on the aforementioned mechanisms, the safe flight of overlapping rotor configurations can be achieved by optimizing the configuration strategy of the rotational speed phase difference between adjacent blades. This study provides a theoretical basis for the rotor layout design and the aerodynamic performance enhancement of heavy-load eVTOL aircraft. 展开更多

Fast and accurate prediction of sound radiation of Contra-Rotating Open Rotors(CRORs)is an essential element of design methods of low-noise open rotor propulsion systems. In the present work,a previous frequency-domain model is extended to predict CROR noise. It builds explicitly the relationship between harmonic loadings and corresponding tonal noise,by which the influential parameters to noise generation can be clearly understood. The real distribu-tions of steady and unsteady blade loadings are calculated by the Nonlinear Harmonic(NLH)method. In the present hybrid approach, both the CFD and acoustic modules are solved in the fre-quency domain. To assess the accuracy of the developed method, the loading noise of a CROR is calculated and compared against results by using the time-domain FW-H module of NUMECA.The predicted sound directivities by the two methods are in good agreements. The present acoustic model in the frequency domain is proven to be accurate and have high efficiency in far-field noise prediction and data processing.Furthermore, the characteristics of the CROR interaction tonal noise are analyzed and discussed. 展开更多

The Contra-Rotating Open Rotor(CROR)design confronts significant noise challenges despite being one of the possible options for future green aeroengines. To efficiently estimate the noise emitted from a CROR,a three-dimensional unsteady prediction model based on the meshless method is presented. The unsteady wake flow and the aerodynamic load fluctuations on the blade are solved through the viscous vortex particle method, the blade element momentum theory and vortex lattice method. Then, the acoustic field is obtained through the Farassat’s formulation 1A.Validation of this method is conducted on a CROR,and a mesh-based method,e.g.,Nonlinear Harmonic(NLH)method,is also employed for comparison. It is found that the presented method is three times faster than NLH method while maintaining a comparable precision.A thorough parametric analysis is also carried out to illustrate the effects of rotational speed,rotor-rotor spacing and rear rotor diameter on the noise level. The rotor speed is found to be the most influencing factor, and by optimizing the speed difference between the front and rear rotors,a notable noise reduction can be expected. The current findings not only contribute to a deeper comprehension of the CROR’s aeroacoustic properties but also offer an effective tool for engineering applications. 展开更多

Contra-rotating small-sized axial fans are used as cooling fans for electric equipment. In the case of the contra-rotating rotors, the blade row distance between front and rear rotors is a key parameter for the performance and stable operation. The wake and potential interference occur between the front and rear rotors and leakage flow from the front rotor tip influences on the flow condition of the rear rotor near the shroud when the blade row distance is small. Therefore, it is important to clarify the flow condition between front and rear rotors. The fan static pressure curves were obtained by the experimental apparatus and the numerical analysis was also conducted to investigate the internal flow between front and rear rotors. The leakage flow from the front rotor tip reaches the leading edge of the rear rotor when the blade row distance is small as L = 10 mm and the pressure fluctuations at the leading edge of the rear rotor tip becomes larger than those at other radial positions. In the present paper, the vorticity contour between front and rear rotors is shown and pressure fluctuations related to the leakage flow from the front rotor is investigated using the numerical analysis result. Then, suitable blade row distance for the contra-rotating small sized axial fan is discussed based on the internal flow condition. 展开更多

Contra-rotating small-sized fans are used as cooling fans for electric equipment. The internal flow condition between the front and rear rotors of the contra-rotating small-sized fan is not known well especially at the low flow rate. Furthermore, the blade row distance between the front and rear rotors is an important parameter for the contra-rotating small-sized fan and its influence on the internal flow condition is not clarified at the low flow rate. Therefore, the internal flow condition of the contra-rotating small-sized fan at the low flow rate is investigated by the numerical analysis in this research. The numerical analysis results are validated by comparing the fan static pressure curves of the numerical results to the experimental results. The internal flow condition at the low flow rate is clarified using the numerical models of the different blade row distance L = 10 mm and 30 mm. In the present paper, pressure fluctuations phase locked each front and rear rotor’s rotation are shown and the influences of the wake and the potential interference are discussed by the unsteady numerical analysis results at the low flow rate. 展开更多

During the rotor assembly of aeroengines, the combined effect of blade mass moment variations and fixed tenon slot constraints makes single-phase rotor unbalance optimization strategies insufficient for real-world industrial assembly scenarios. This often leads to excessive residual unbalance after assembly, resulting in engine vibrations and compromised operational stability. To address the lack of blade selection strategies and low qualification rates due to tenon slot constraints in industrial settings, this paper proposes a co-optimization method for blade selection and sequencing under industrial assembly constraints.A two-stage data-driven optimization framework is developed. In the first stage,a Dynamic Replacement Roulette Selection(DRWS)algorithm is introduced for global multi-set blade selection, improving blade utilization and avoiding selection failure caused by excessive moment dispersion. In the second stage, under fixed tenon slot constraints, blade sequencing is optimized using a Constrained Adaptive Genetic Algorithm(CAGA),effectively suppressing residual unbalance.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a blade utilization rate of 92.4%on 145 samples, with well-balanced group sets.Under tenon slot constraints, the residual unbalance is reduced from 58 g·mm and 94 g·mm(random assembly)to 7 g·mm and 10 g·mm,respectively. This study offers a novel solution and technical support for improving assembly precision and enabling intelligent decision-making in aeroengine rotor assembly lines. 展开更多

This paper proposes a new approach to eliminate aerodynamic lift oscillation, called the Dominant Sector Individual Blade Control(DS-IBC)method for rigid rotor helicopters. An Advancing Blade Concept(ABC)rotor model for aerodynamic analysis based on the free-wake method is applied.DS-IBC avoids applying active control on the rotor's retreating side by employing and restricting active control inputs to a sector area of the rotor disc.Outside this sector, only primary collective and cyclic pitch control are used. Each blade takes turns entering the sector, creating a“relay”active control form to ensure continuous control inputs. The method also includes outer-trim and inner-trim iteration modules. Results show that DS-IBC can eliminate aerodynamic lift oscillation using much smaller control inputs than the sine-trim method.By focusing active control on the rotor's advancing side,DS-IBC improves the effective lift-to-drag ratio and reduces the implementation difficulty of active rotor control for aerodynamic oscillation elimination, especially at a large lift-offset. 展开更多

The testing of large structures is limited by high costs and long cycles, making scaling methods an attractive solution. However, the scaling process of elastic rings introduces complexities in multi-parameter geometric distortions, leading to a diminution in the predictive accuracy of the distorted similitude. To address this challenge, this study formulates a novel set of scaling laws, tailored to account for the intricate geometric distortions associated with elastic rings. The proposed scaling laws are formulated based on the intrinsic deformation characteristics of elastic rings, rather than the traditional systemic governing equations. Numerical and experimental cases are conducted to assess the efficacy and precision of the proposed scaling laws, and the obtained results are compared with those achieved by traditional methods. The outcomes demonstrate that the scaling laws put forth by this study significantly enhance the predictive capabilities for deformations of elastic rings. 展开更多

Although the thin and cold Martian atmosphere provides the feasibility of rotorcraft flight on Mars, rotors designed for denser Earth atmosphere with small angles of attack hardly generate enough thrust for rotorcraft flight at conventional rotational speeds in the Martian atmosphere. In this paper,we employ the Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO)algorithm to search for the control points of the Bezier curve, completing the parameterization of the airfoil upper and lower curves based on these control points. In order to directly enhance the lift-to-drag ratio of the airfoil at high angles of attack, the NSGA-II algorithm is utilized to optimize the lift-to-drag ratio of NACA 6904 at a=17.5°,Ma=0.43,Re=7600,and CLF 5605 at a=15°,Ma=0.7,Re=7481,respectively.The two-dimensional RANS(Reynolds Average NavierStokes)and k-ωSST turbulence models are employed in the optimization process by CFD to predict the lift and drag characteristics of the airfoil in a Martian environment.Under simulated Mars atmospheric conditions(pressure of 1380 Pa,test temperature of 24°C,equivalent Mars atmospheric density at the surface of 0.0162 g/cm~3),the airfoil after optimized is subjected to rotor lift-drag characteristic tests where a single-rotor lift-drag characteristic test bench is employed for verification. The experimental results demonstrate that the RB-TB-II blade, which is obtained by optimizing the airfoil based on the RB-SWQ-I blade, exhibits a 19.6%increase in Power Loading(PL)and a 20.4%increase in Figure of Merit(FM)compared with the RB-SWQ-I blade.Based on the results of airfoil optimization, increasing the camber at the leading edge of the airfoil under high angles of attack contributes to an improved lift-to-drag ratio. 展开更多

The unsteady 3D flow fields in a single-stage transonic compressor under designed conditions are simulated numerically to investigate the effects of the curved rotors on the stage performance and the aerodynamic interaction between the blade rows. The results show that, compared to the compressor with unurved rotors, the compressor under scrutiny acquires remarkable increases in efficiency with significantly reduced amplitudes of the time-dependent fluctuation. The amplitude of the pressure fluctuation around the stator leading edge decreases at both endwalls, but increases at the mid-span in the curved rotors. The pressure fluctuation near the stator leading edge, therefore, becomes more uniform in the radial direction of this compressor. Except for the leading edge area, the pressure fluctuatinn amplitude declines remarkably in the tip region of stator surface downstream of the curved rotor, but hardly changes in the middle and at the hub. 展开更多

Three-dimensional unsteady Euler equations are numerically solved to simulate the unsteady flows around forward flight helicopter with coaxial rotors based on unstructured dynamic overset grids. The performances of the two coaxial rotors both become worse because of the aerodynamic interaction between them, and the influence of the top rotor on the bottom rotor is greater than that of the bottom rotor on the top rotor. The downwash velocity at the bottom rotor plane is much larger than that at the top rotor plane, and the downwash velocity at the top rotor plane is a little larger than that at an individual rotor plane. The downwash velocity and thrust coefficient both become larger when the collective angle of blades is added. When the spacing between the two coaxial rotors increases, the thrust coefficient of the top rotor increases, but the total thrust coefficient reduces a little, because the decrease of the bottom rotor thrust coefficient is larger than the increase of the top rotor thrust coefficient. 展开更多

A validated analytical helicopter model able to predict the main and tail rotor power is utilized. The fixed height GF has substantially small influence on the tail rotor power in hover and low to medium speed forward flight, and can obtain significant power reduction in high speed flight. This ability can be enhanced by decreasing the tail rotor speed. With the deployment of GF, the collective pitch of the tail rotor decreases, and the maximum tail rotor thrust increases. The GF can compensate the reduction of the maximum thrust by the decrease in the tail rotor speed. The GF with a height of 5% of the chord length can almost remedy 50% of the thrust reduction introduced by decreasing 10% of the tail rotor speed. With the increase of GF height, the maximum thrust generated by the tail rotor increases. The GF with larger height can cause the increase in the tail rotor power in hover and low to medium speed flight. The retractable GF can obtain more power savings than the fixed height GF. However, the benefit is substantially small even in high speed flight. Considering the side effects introduced by the active GF, the fixed height GF may be more preferable. The mechanism for the retractable GF to generate more tail rotor thrust is to increase the lift in advancing side due to the higher dynamic pressure. 展开更多

A growing interest has been devoted to the contra-rotating propellers (CRPs) due to their high propulsive efficiency, torque balance, low fuel consumption, low cavitations, low noise performance and low hull vibration. Compared with the single-screw system, it is more difficult for the open water performance prediction because forward and aft propellers interact with each other and generate a more complicated flow field around the CRPs system. The current work focuses on the open water performance prediction of contra-rotating propellers by RANS and sliding mesh method considering the effect of computational time step size and turbulence model. The validation study has been performed on two sets of contra-rotating propellers developed by David W Taylor Naval Ship R & D center. Compared with the experimental data, it shows that RANS with sliding mesh method and SST k-ω turbulence model has a good precision in the open water performance prediction of contra-rotating propellers, and small time step size can improve the level of accuracy for CRPs with the same blade number of forward and aft propellers, while a relatively large time step size is a better choice for CRPs with different blade numbers. 展开更多

It is thought that small hydropower generation is alternative energy, and the energy potential of small hydropower is large. The efficiency of small hydro turbines is lower than that of large one, and these small hydro turbine’s common problems are out of operation by foreign materials. Then, there are demands for small hydro turbines to keep high per- formance and wide flow passage. Therefore, we adopted contra-rotating rotors which can be expected to achieve high performance and low-solidity rotors with wide flow passage in order to accomplish high performance and stable opera- tion. Final goal on this study is development of an electric appliance type small hydro turbine which has high portability and makes an effective use of the unused small hydro power energy source.
