Impact of a visual mobile terminal-based continuity of care model on caregiver competence of children with enterostomies

BACKGROUND Children with critical acute abdominal conditions often undergo intestinal stoma surgery.AIM To explore the impact of a visual mobile terminal-based extended care model on caregiver competence for children with enterostomies.METHODS One hundred twenty children with enterostomies and their caregivers in a children's hospital in Beijing were divided into a control group and a study group.The control group(60 cases)received traditional telephone follow-up for continuity of care,while the study group(60 cases)used a visualization mobile terminal-based care model.The incidence of stoma-related complications,caregiver burden scale,and competence scores of children with stoma were compared between the two groups.RESULTS The primary caregiver burden score in the study group(37.22±3.17)was significantly lower than that in the control group(80.00±4.47),and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Additionally,the caregiving ability score of the study group(172.08±3.49)was significantly higher than that of the control group(117.55±4.28;P<0.05).The total incidence of complications in the study group(11.7%,7/60)was significantly lower compared to the control group(33.3%,20/60;χ2=8.086,P=0.004).CONCLUSION The visual mobile terminal-based care model reduces caregiver burden,improves home care ability,lowers the incidence of complications and readmission rates,and supports successful second-stage reduction surgery for children with enterostomies. 展开更多

This paper is about the transformation process of theoretical frameworks used in educational research on teaching evolution. To this end, some authors' claims, findings and suggestions offered via particular studies are evaluated. While the evaluated authors have represented secularism as a barrier to teaching evolution in the United States, they have also offered pedagogically theistic or agnostic evolution as the best choice for the reconciliation of religion and evolution. This paper is particularly concerned with one of the explanatory theoretical frameworks—religious cultural competence in evolution education(ReCCEE), which is derived from the cultural competence framework—although others are visited as well. Even though the schools or authors who have applied ReCCEE do not directly reference constructivism, their studies are built upon constructivist pedagogy and epistemological idealism. They often have problematic issues such as obscurantism, ad hominem attacks, cherry-picking and an ill-formed appeal to authority. Besides, these papers present biased or uncritical views and ill-informed definitions of some terms, such as secularism and agnosticism. 展开更多

The Impacts of a Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility Intervention on Social and Emotional Competence in Physical Education:A Quasi-Experimental Study

Background:The Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility(TPSR)model in physical education(PE)has been shown to promote Social and emotional competence(SEC).However,the underlying mechanisms through which TPSR enhances SEC,particularly in university students within the Chinese context,remain unclear.This study aims to explore the effects of TPSR and the mediating roles of self-efficacy and grit in improving SEC.Methods:71 Chinese university students were in the TPSR group,and 39 in the Traditional Teaching Model(TTM)control group,assessed before and after a 14-week intervention.The Adapted Social and Emotional Competence Scale(ASECS),General Self-Efficacy Scale(GSES),and Short Grit Scale(SGS)were used for measurement.A mixed-design ANOVA assessed TPSR’s effects,with post-hoc t-tests for pre-post differences and mediation analysis for underlying mechanisms.Results:The mixed-design ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between time and intervention on SEC.The TPSR group showed significant improvement from pre-test to post-test(t(70)=−2.63,p=0.011,Cohen’s d=−0.31),whereas the TTM control group did not(t(38)=1.40,p=0.170,Cohen’s d=0.22).The TPSR group also showed a significant increase in self-efficacy(t(70)=−3.67,p<0.001,Cohen’s d=−0.44),while no change was observed in the TTM group(t(38)=0.62,p=0.540,Cohen’s d=0.10).No significant effects were found for grit(F=0.342,p=0.560).Mediation analysis confirmed that self-efficacy significantly mediated the effects of the TPSR intervention on SEC(95%CI:0.0277 to 0.2897).Conclusion:The TPSR intervention led to significant improvements in university students’SEC and self-efficacy,with no significant changes observed in grit.Self-efficacy served as a mediator in the relationship between the intervention and SEC. 展开更多

Relationship between death anxiety and coping with death competence among Chinese oncology nurses: A chain mediation model

BACKGROUND Death anxiety(DA)is a prevalent psychological challenge among oncology nurses that affects their emotional well-being and professional competence in coping with death-related situations.Death-related attitudes and resilience are critical factors that may mediate the relationship between DA and coping with death competence(CDC).However,few studies have examined the chain-mediating effect of these factors among Chinese oncology nurses.This study aimed to investigate the association between DA and CDC among Chinese oncology nurses,with a focus on the mediating roles of death attitude and resilience.AIM To investigate the association between DA and CDC among Chinese oncology nurses.using an electronic questionnaire distributed in Wenjuanxing,China.In total,615 valid responses were obtained.The participants completed the Templer death anxiety scale,death attitude profile-revised,Connor-Davidson resilience scale,and coping with death scale.A chain mediation analysis was performed using the PROCESS macro in SPSS to examine the relationships between these variables.RESULTS The findings indicated that DA had a significant direct effect on CDC[effect=0.201,95%confidence interval(CI):0.112-0.322].In addition to this direct effect,three significant indirect pathways were observed:(1)Death attitude(effect=0.118,95%CI:0.056-0.163);(2)Resilience(effect=0.108,95%CI:0.032-0.176);and(3)A sequential mediation pathway involving both death attitude and resilience(effect=0.071,95%CI:0.042-0.123).The total indirect effects of the three mediation paths accounted for 29.7%of the relationship between DA and CDC.CONCLUSION Using a chain mediation model,this study explored the mechanisms linking DA,death attitude,resilience,and CDC among Chinese oncology nurses.These findings highlighted the crucial role of death attitude and resilience in mediating the relationship between DA and CDC.Interventions aimed at fostering adaptive attitudes toward death and enhancing resilience may improve nurses’ability to cope with death-related stressors,ultimately benefiting their psychological well-being and professional competence. 展开更多

This study investigates the correlation between musical competence and English prosodic production as well as the associations among their internal components.Eighty Chinese EFL learners in college took the musical perception test,musical production test and English prosodic production test in sequence.In order to take a closer look at the prosodic performance,taking native English speakers as a reference,we also conducted an in-depth acoustic analysis of the English prosody produced by six cases in both high and low musical competence groups with the aid of Praat and ToBI.Our results indicate that students with high musical competence tend to outperform those with low musical competence in English prosodic production.However,musical perception competence seems to have a greater correlation with English prosodic competence than musical production competence.In addition,beat alignment or tempo(related to time and stress)could be the most associated component in musical competence with English prosody,while melody in music was double confirmed to be unhelpful.It was also spotted that cases with high musical competence performed more native-like patterns of phrase accent,boundary tones,intonational phrases as well as placement of stress.The results have important theoretical implications for the construct interpretation of musical competence,and also suggest that rhythmic perception training could be the most effective way to transfer music achievement to English speech prosody. 展开更多

This study explored the mediating role of moral courage in the relationship between emotional intelligence and perceptions of patient safety competence among nursing students in clinical practice.The study sample comprised 220 nursing students from a teaching hospital(female=93.6%;mean age=20.64 years,SD=1.78 years).Nursing students completed standardized measures of Emotional Intelligence Scale,the Moral Courage Scale,and the Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey.Following hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrap analysis,the results showed that emotional intelligence and moral courage significantly predicted high levels of the perceptions of patient safety competence among nursing students in clinical practice.Moreover,moral courage partially mediated the relationship emotional intelligence and perceptions of patient safety competence.The results indicate measures focused on improving emotional intelligence and moral courage levels among nursing students in clinical practice will be effective at increasing their perceptions of patient safety competence. 展开更多

Objective: The importance of culture in nursing lies in its influence on patients’ health perceptions, behaviors, and responses to care. Despite the challenges posed by the complexity of studying culture, there remains a critical need to develop cultural competence in nursing. This study investigated how nursing students in rural Indonesia enhance their cultural competence through education and practice. Methods: This study employed a qualitative descriptive phenomenological approach. It conducted face-to-face interviews with 32 students across 6 regions, selected purposively. Thematic analysis was employed to evaluate the results. Results: Five themes emerge in this research: perceptions of cultural competence, learning cultural competence in the classroom, practical experience, learning expectations related to cultural competence, and cultural learning barriers. Conclusions: Enhancing cultural competence necessitates enriched curricula, adept clinical mentors, and continual student evaluation. This iterative assessment informs tailored strategies for nurturing cultural proficiency. 展开更多

Introduction:Nurse specialists are being cultivated and trained in China to cope with the international development of nursing discipline.However,an empirical summary and reviews of literature have shown a lack of core competence evaluation standards for emergency nurse specialists(ENSs)in China.ENS training has been conducted in several regions without any effective competence evaluation standards.This paper describes the development and psychometric testing of the Core Competence Evaluation Standards for Emergency Nurse Specialists(CCESENS)in the Chinese context.Methods:Several rigorous research methods were applied.The proposed evaluation process consisted of two phases with seven steps.First,the Core Competence Framework Model for Emergency Nurse Specialist(CCFMENS)was established,and 118 items were generated through a review of literature,theoretical analysis,and expert interviews.Drafts of the dimensions and items were evaluated by two-round Delphi methods.Analysis hierarchy process was used to determine the weight of each dimension.Second,field testing was performed among 138 senior emergency nurses.Internal consistency and correlation analysis were applied to test the reliability and validity of the model.Results:The CCESENS consisted of five first-level dimensions,16 second-level dimensions,and 55 items.Cronbach's a coefficient of overall standards was 0.972,and each dimension ranged from 0.508 to 0.972.Expert content validity index was 0.818,and the correlation coefficients of the five first-level dimensions with the overall standards CCESENS ranged from 0.701 to 0.886(P<0.05).Discussion:The CCESENS demonstrated sound internal consistency reliability,content validity,and construct validity.The proposed standard provides an objective standard and reference for assessing,training,and evaluating core competence of ENS. 展开更多
