High-precision classification of benthic habitat sediments in shallow waters of islands by multi-source data

Benthic habitat mapping is an emerging discipline in the international marine field in recent years,providing an effective tool for marine spatial planning,marine ecological management,and decision-making applications.Seabed sediment classification is one of the main contents of seabed habitat mapping.In response to the impact of remote sensing imaging quality and the limitations of acoustic measurement range,where a single data source does not fully reflect the substrate type,we proposed a high-precision seabed habitat sediment classification method that integrates data from multiple sources.Based on WorldView-2 multi-spectral remote sensing image data and multibeam bathymetry data,constructed a random forests(RF)classifier with optimal feature selection.A seabed sediment classification experiment integrating optical remote sensing and acoustic remote sensing data was carried out in the shallow water area of Wuzhizhou Island,Hainan,South China.Different seabed sediment types,such as sand,seagrass,and coral reefs were effectively identified,with an overall classification accuracy of 92%.Experimental results show that RF matrix optimized by fusing multi-source remote sensing data for feature selection were better than the classification results of simple combinations of data sources,which improved the accuracy of seabed sediment classification.Therefore,the method proposed in this paper can be effectively applied to high-precision seabed sediment classification and habitat mapping around islands and reefs. 展开更多

Many fields,such as neuroscience,are experiencing the vast prolife ration of cellular data,underscoring the need fo r organizing and interpreting large datasets.A popular approach partitions data into manageable subsets via hierarchical clustering,but objective methods to determine the appropriate classification granularity are missing.We recently introduced a technique to systematically identify when to stop subdividing clusters based on the fundamental principle that cells must differ more between than within clusters.Here we present the corresponding protocol to classify cellular datasets by combining datadriven unsupervised hierarchical clustering with statistical testing.These general-purpose functions are applicable to any cellular dataset that can be organized as two-dimensional matrices of numerical values,including molecula r,physiological,and anatomical datasets.We demonstrate the protocol using cellular data from the Janelia MouseLight project to chara cterize morphological aspects of neurons. 展开更多

The integration of image analysis through deep learning(DL)into rock classification represents a significant leap forward in geological research.While traditional methods remain invaluable for their expertise and historical context,DL offers a powerful complement by enhancing the speed,objectivity,and precision of the classification process.This research explores the significance of image data augmentation techniques in optimizing the performance of convolutional neural networks(CNNs)for geological image analysis,particularly in the classification of igneous,metamorphic,and sedimentary rock types from rock thin section(RTS)images.This study primarily focuses on classic image augmentation techniques and evaluates their impact on model accuracy and precision.Results demonstrate that augmentation techniques like Equalize significantly enhance the model's classification capabilities,achieving an F1-Score of 0.9869 for igneous rocks,0.9884 for metamorphic rocks,and 0.9929 for sedimentary rocks,representing improvements compared to the baseline original results.Moreover,the weighted average F1-Score across all classes and techniques is 0.9886,indicating an enhancement.Conversely,methods like Distort lead to decreased accuracy and F1-Score,with an F1-Score of 0.949 for igneous rocks,0.954 for metamorphic rocks,and 0.9416 for sedimentary rocks,exacerbating the performance compared to the baseline.The study underscores the practicality of image data augmentation in geological image classification and advocates for the adoption of DL methods in this domain for automation and improved results.The findings of this study can benefit various fields,including remote sensing,mineral exploration,and environmental monitoring,by enhancing the accuracy of geological image analysis both for scientific research and industrial applications. 展开更多

The World Wide Web provides a wealth of information about everything, including contemporary audio and visual art events, which are discussed on media outlets, blogs, and specialized websites alike. This information may become a robust source of real-world data, which may form the basis of an objective data-driven analysis. In this study, a methodology for collecting information about audio and visual art events in an automated manner from a large array of websites is presented in detail. This process uses cutting edge Semantic Web, Web Search and Generative AI technologies to convert website documents into a collection of structured data. The value of the methodology is demonstrated by creating a large dataset concerning audiovisual events in Greece. The collected information includes event characteristics, estimated metrics based on their text descriptions, outreach metrics based on the media that reported them, and a multi-layered classification of these events based on their type, subjects and methods used. This dataset is openly provided to the general and academic public through a Web application. Moreover, each event’s outreach is evaluated using these quantitative metrics, the results are analyzed with an emphasis on classification popularity and useful conclusions are drawn concerning the importance of artistic subjects, methods, and media. 展开更多

Bird Species Classification Using Image Background Removal for Data Augmentation

Bird species classification is not only a challenging topic in artificial intelligence but also a domain closely related to environmental protection and ecological research.Additionally,performing edge computing on low-level devices using small neural networks can be an important research direction.In this paper,we use the EfficientNetV2B0 model for bird species classification,applying transfer learning on a dataset of 525 bird species.We also employ the BiRefNet model to remove backgrounds from images in the training set.The generated background-removed images are mixed with the original training set as a form of data augmentation.We aim for these background-removed images to help the model focus on key features,and by combining data augmentation with transfer learning,we trained a highly accurate and efficient bird species classification model.The training process is divided into a transfer learning stage and a fine-tuning stage.In the transfer learning stage,only the newly added custom layers are trained;while in the fine-tuning stage,all pre-trained layers except for the batch normalization layers are fine-tuned.According to the experimental results,the proposed model not only has an advantage in size compared to other models but also outperforms them in various metrics.The training results show that the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 99.54%and a precision of 99.62%,demonstrating that it achieves both lightweight design and high accuracy.To confirm the credibility of the results,we use heatmaps to interpret the model.The heatmaps show that our model can clearly highlight the image feature area.In addition,we also perform the 10-fold cross-validation on the model to verify its credibility.Finally,this paper proposes a model with low training cost and high accuracy,making it suitable for deployment on edge computing devices to provide lighter and more convenient services. 展开更多

Many bioinformatics applications require determining the class of a newly sequenced Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)sequence,making DNA sequence classification an integral step in performing bioinformatics analysis,where large biomedical datasets are transformed into valuable knowledge.Existing methods rely on a feature extraction step and suffer from high computational time requirements.In contrast,newer approaches leveraging deep learning have shown significant promise in enhancing accuracy and efficiency.In this paper,we investigate the performance of various deep learning architectures:Convolutional Neural Network(CNN),CNN-Long Short-Term Memory(CNNLSTM),CNN-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory(CNN-BiLSTM),Residual Network(ResNet),and InceptionV3 for DNA sequence classification.Various numerical and visual data representation techniques are utilized to represent the input datasets,including:label encoding,k-mer sentence encoding,k-mer one-hot vector,Frequency Chaos Game Representation(FCGR)and 5-Color Map(ColorSquare).Three datasets are used for the training of the models including H3,H4 and DNA Sequence Dataset(Yeast,Human,Arabidopsis Thaliana).Experiments are performed to determine which combination of DNA representation and deep learning architecture yields improved performance for the classification task.Our results indicate that using a hybrid CNN-LSTM neural network trained on DNA sequences represented as one-hot encoded k-mer sequences yields the best performance,achieving an accuracy of 92.1%. 展开更多

Crop phenotyping plays a critical role in precision agriculture by enabling the accurate assessment of plant traits,supporting improved crop management,breeding programs,and yield optimization.However,cowpea leaves present unique challenges for automated phenotyping due to their diverse shapes,complex vein structures,and variations caused by environmental conditions.This research presents a deep learning-based approach for the classification of cowpea leaf images to support crop phenotyping tasks.Given the limited availability of annotated datasets,data augmentation techniques were employed to artificially expand the original small dataset while preserving essential leaf characteristics.Various image processing methods were applied to enrich the dataset,ensuring better feature representation without significant information loss.A deep neural network,specifically the MobileNet architecture,was utilized for its efficiency in capturing multi-scale features and handling image data with limited computational resources.The performance of the model trained on the augmented dataset was evaluated,achieving an accuracy of 94.12%on the cowpea leaf classification task.These results demonstrate the effectiveness of data augmentation in enhancing model generalization and learning capabilities. 展开更多

This study demonstrates the complexity and importance of water quality as a measure of the health and sustainability of ecosystems that directly influence biodiversity,human health,and the world economy.The predictability of water quality thus plays a crucial role in managing our ecosystems to make informed decisions and,hence,proper environmental management.This study addresses these challenges by proposing an effective machine learning methodology applied to the“Water Quality”public dataset.The methodology has modeled the dataset suitable for providing prediction classification analysis with high values of the evaluating parameters such as accuracy,sensitivity,and specificity.The proposed methodology is based on two novel approaches:(a)the SMOTE method to deal with unbalanced data and(b)the skillfully involved classical machine learning models.This paper uses Random Forests,Decision Trees,XGBoost,and Support Vector Machines because they can handle large datasets,train models for handling skewed datasets,and provide high accuracy in water quality classification.A key contribution of this work is the use of custom sampling strategies within the SMOTE approach,which significantly enhanced performance metrics and improved class imbalance handling.The results demonstrate significant improvements in predictive performance,achieving the highest reported metrics:accuracy(98.92%vs.96.06%),sensitivity(98.3%vs.71.26%),and F1 score(98.37%vs.79.74%)using the XGBoost model.These improvements underscore the effectiveness of our custom SMOTE sampling strategies in addressing class imbalance.The findings contribute to environmental management by enabling ecology specialists to develop more accurate strategies for monitoring,assessing,and managing drinking water quality,ensuring better ecosystem and public health outcomes. 展开更多

Medical image classification is crucial in disease diagnosis,treatment planning,and clinical decisionmaking.We introduced a novel medical image classification approach that integrates Bayesian Random Semantic Data Augmentation(BSDA)with a Vision Mamba-based model for medical image classification(MedMamba),enhanced by residual connection blocks,we named the model BSDA-Mamba.BSDA augments medical image data semantically,enhancing the model’s generalization ability and classification performance.MedMamba,a deep learning-based state space model,excels in capturing long-range dependencies in medical images.By incorporating residual connections,BSDA-Mamba further improves feature extraction capabilities.Through comprehensive experiments on eight medical image datasets,we demonstrate that BSDA-Mamba outperforms existing models in accuracy,area under the curve,and F1-score.Our results highlight BSDA-Mamba’s potential as a reliable tool for medical image analysis,particularly in handling diverse imaging modalities from X-rays to MRI.The open-sourcing of our model’s code and datasets,will facilitate the reproduction and extension of our work. 展开更多

To improve question answering (QA) performance based on real-world web data sets,a new set of question classes and a general answer re-ranking model are defined.With pre-defined dictionary and grammatical analysis,the question classifier draws both semantic and grammatical information into information retrieval and machine learning methods in the form of various training features,including the question word,the main verb of the question,the dependency structure,the position of the main auxiliary verb,the main noun of the question,the top hypernym of the main noun,etc.Then the QA query results are re-ranked by question class information.Experiments show that the questions in real-world web data sets can be accurately classified by the classifier,and the QA results after re-ranking can be obviously improved.It is proved that with both semantic and grammatical information,applications such as QA, built upon real-world web data sets, can be improved,thus showing better performance. 展开更多

In order to reduce amount of data storage and improve processing capacity of the system, this paper proposes a new classification method of data source by combining phase synchronization model in network clustering with cloud model. Firstly, taking data source as a complex network, after the topography of network is obtained, the cloud model of each node data is determined by fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Secondly, by calculating expectation, entropy and hyper entropy of the cloud model, comprehensive coupling strength is got and then it is regarded as the edge weight of topography. Finally, distribution curve is obtained by iterating the phase of each node by means of phase synchronization model. Thus classification of data source is completed. This method can not only provide convenience for storage, cleaning and compression of data, but also improve the efficiency of data analysis. 展开更多

Joint probabilistic data association is an effective method for tracking multiple targets in clutter, but only the target kinematic information is used in measure-to-track association. If the kinematic likelihoods are similar for different closely spaced targets, there is ambiguity in using the kinematic information alone; the correct association probability will decrease in conventional joint probabilistic data association algorithm and track coalescence will occur easily. A modified algorithm of joint probabilistic data association with classification-aided is presented, which avoids track coalescence when tracking multiple neighboring targets. Firstly, an identification matrix is defined, which is used to simplify validation matrix to decrease computational complexity. Then, target class information is integrated into the data association process. Performance comparisons with and without the use of class information in JPDA are presented on multiple closely spaced maneuvering targets tracking problem. Simulation results quantify the benefits of classification-aided JPDA for improved multiple targets tracking, especially in the presence of association uncertainty in the kinematic measurement and target maneuvering. Simulation results indicate that the algorithm is valid. 展开更多

The main objective of this research is to determine the capacity of land cover classification combining spec- tral and textural features of Landsat TM imagery with ancillary geographical data in wetlands of the Sanjiang Plain, Heilongjiang Province, China. Semi-variograms and Z-test value were calculated to assess the separability of grey-level co-occurrence texture measures to maximize the difference between land cover types. The degree of spatial autocorrelation showed that window sizes of 3×3 pixels and 11×11 pixels were most appropriate for Landsat TM im- age texture calculations. The texture analysis showed that co-occurrence entropy, dissimilarity, and variance texture measures, derived from the Landsat TM spectrum bands and vegetation indices provided the most significant statistical differentiation between land cover types. Subsequently, a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) algorithm was applied to three different combinations of predictors: 1) TM imagery alone (TM-only); 2) TM imagery plus image texture (TM+TXT model); and 3) all predictors including TM imagery, image texture and additional ancillary GIS in- formation (TM+TXT+GIS model). Compared with traditional Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) supervised classification, three classification trees predictive models reduced the overall error rate significantly. Image texture measures and ancillary geographical variables depressed the speckle noise effectively and reduced classification error rate of marsh obviously. For classification trees model making use of all available predictors, omission error rate was 12.90% and commission error rate was 10.99% for marsh. The developed method is portable, relatively easy to im- plement and should be applicable in other settings and over larger extents. 展开更多

A classificationmethod based on spatial data mining is presented to address theabove challenge. Inspired by the idea of spatial data mining, theclassification method applies nuclear field to depicting the distributioninformation of pulse samples in feature space, and digs out thehidden cluster information by analyzing distribution characteristics.In addition, a membership-degree criterion to quantify the correlationamong all classes is established, which ensures classificationaccuracy of signal samples. We developed a forest type classification technology for the Daxing'an Mountains of northeast China using multisource remote sensing data.A SPOT-5 image and two temporal images of RADARSAT-2 full-polarization SAR were used to identify forest types in the Pangu Forest Farm of the Daxing'an Mountains.Forest types were identified using random forest(RF) classification with the following data combination types: SPOT-5 alone,SPOT-5 and SAR images in August or November,and SPOT-5 and two temporal SAR images.We identified many forest types using a combination of multitemporal SAR and SPOT-5 images,including Betula platyphylla,Larix gmelinii,Pinus sylvestris and Picea koraiensis forests.The accuracy of classification exceeded 88% and improved by 12% when compared to the classification results obtained using SPOT data alone.RF classification using a combination of multisource remote sensing data improved classification accuracy compared to that achieved using single-source remote sensing data. 展开更多

Real-time prediction of the rock mass class in front of the tunnel face is essential for the adaptive adjustment of tunnel boring machines(TBMs).During the TBM tunnelling process,a large number of operation data are generated,reflecting the interaction between the TBM system and surrounding rock,and these data can be used to evaluate the rock mass quality.This study proposed a stacking ensemble classifier for the real-time prediction of the rock mass classification using TBM operation data.Based on the Songhua River water conveyance project,a total of 7538 TBM tunnelling cycles and the corresponding rock mass classes are obtained after data preprocessing.Then,through the tree-based feature selection method,10 key TBM operation parameters are selected,and the mean values of the 10 selected features in the stable phase after removing outliers are calculated as the inputs of classifiers.The preprocessed data are randomly divided into the training set(90%)and test set(10%)using simple random sampling.Besides stacking ensemble classifier,seven individual classifiers are established as the comparison.These classifiers include support vector machine(SVM),k-nearest neighbors(KNN),random forest(RF),gradient boosting decision tree(GBDT),decision tree(DT),logistic regression(LR)and multilayer perceptron(MLP),where the hyper-parameters of each classifier are optimised using the grid search method.The prediction results show that the stacking ensemble classifier has a better performance than individual classifiers,and it shows a more powerful learning and generalisation ability for small and imbalanced samples.Additionally,a relative balance training set is obtained by the synthetic minority oversampling technique(SMOTE),and the influence of sample imbalance on the prediction performance is discussed. 展开更多

Land cover classification is the core of converting satellite imagery to available geographic data.However,spectral signatures do not always provide enough information in classification decisions.Thus,the application of multi-source data becomes necessary.This paper presents an evidential reasoning (ER) approach to incorporate Landsat TM imagery,altitude and slope data.Results show that multi-source data contribute to the classification accuracy achieved by the ER method,whereas play a negative role to that derived by maximum likelihood classifier (MLC).In comparison to the results derived based on TM imagery alone,the overall accuracy rate of the ER method increases by 7.66% and that of the MLC method decreases by 8.35% when all data sources (TM plus altitude and slope) are accessible.The ER method is regarded as a better approach for multi-source image classification.In addition,the method produces not only an accurate classification result,but also the uncertainty which presents the inherent difficulty in classification decisions.The uncertainty associated to the ER classification image is evaluated and proved to be useful for improved classification accuracy. 展开更多

In most of the passive tracking systems, only the target kinematical information is used in the measurement-to-track association, which results in error tracking in a multitarget environment, where the targets are too close to each other. To enhance the tracking accuracy, the target signal classification information (TSCI) should be used to improve the data association. The TSCI is integrated in the data association process using the JPDA (joint probabilistic data association). The use of the TSCI in the data association can improve discrimination by yielding a purer track and preserving continuity. To verify the validity of the application of TSCI, two simulation experiments are done on an air target-tracing problem, that is, one using the TSCI and the other not using the TSCI. The final comparison shows that the use of the TSCI can effectively improve tracking accuracy. 展开更多
