This paper examines the English translations of The Book of Chuang Tzu by Martin Palmer under Big Translation Theory,which emphasizes cyclical cultural reconstructions.Focusing on three phases-full translation,abridge...This paper examines the English translations of The Book of Chuang Tzu by Martin Palmer under Big Translation Theory,which emphasizes cyclical cultural reconstructions.Focusing on three phases-full translation,abridged adaptation and back translation-the study reveals how cultural and philosophical nuances are reshaped during interlingual,intralingual,and intersemiotic conversions.Textual analysis demonstrates that Palmer’s translations,while enhancing readability for Western readers,distorts some of the core Taoist concepts.While the full and abridged versions lead to cultural reconstructions,the back-translated text reflects that,under Big Translation Theory,such reconstructions help to integrate traditional Chinese cultural memory with Western discourse,forming a new type of collective cultural memory.By associating translation activities with building collective cultural memory,the study reveals the cross-cultural and social attributes in translating classical texts,which secures the communicative and prolonged nature of cultural essence.展开更多

Hong Lou Meng is one of the most important works in Chinese classical novels,and the author,Cao Xueqin,gave his own understanding of the feudal society and his exclamation of the fickleness of the world in the novel.U...Hong Lou Meng is one of the most important works in Chinese classical novels,and the author,Cao Xueqin,gave his own understanding of the feudal society and his exclamation of the fickleness of the world in the novel.Up to now,the novel and the poems in the novel are still of high artistic value.Qiu Chuang Feng Yu Xi,as one of the most artistic and representative poems in the novel,has been translated into English by many translators.Among the translations,Yang Xianyi’s translation and David Hawkes’translation have the highest artistic achievements.Yang Xianyi is a famous Chinese translator and David Hawkes is a world-renowned sinologist in Britain.Because of their distinct identities,their translation purposes and translation styles are totally different.Guided by German translator Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory,this paper investigates the prologues of the translations of Hong Lou Meng and the translators’biographies.The findings indicate the respective translation purposes of Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes and their trade-off choices of translation methods.By means of objectively evaluation of the merits and demerits of the two translation versions of Qiu Chuang Feng Yu Xi,the rationality of existence of the translations in a specific cultural background is explained.It is proved that Skopos Theory is one of the general methods for the English translation of poems in Chinese classical novels.展开更多

Methods: PBMCs isolated from female patients with SLE or healthy donors were cultured and treated with LCD medicated serum or normal serum for 24 or 48 h. The m RNA expressions of CD70 gene in PBMCs were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(PCR); the DNA methylation of the CD70 gene promoter region was detected by methylation-specific PCR. Results: After treated with medicated serum for 48 h, the m RNA expression levels of CD70 in PBMCs of SLE patients were significantly higher than those of healthy donors(P<0.05); the DNA methylation levels of CD70 promoter region in PBMCs of SLE patients treated with medicated serum for 48 h were significantly higher than those treated with fetal bovine serum(P<0.01). Conclusion: LCD could inhibit CD70 gene expression in PBMCs of SLE patients by promoting the DNA methylation of CD70 gene promoter.展开更多
As the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture,Chuang Tzu and other Chinese literary classics have been translated and introduced to many Western countries in succession,arousing Western attention and thoughts on ...As the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture,Chuang Tzu and other Chinese literary classics have been translated and introduced to many Western countries in succession,arousing Western attention and thoughts on Chinese culture.Since Chuang Tzu was introduced to Germany by sinologists and missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century,it has triggered a continuous upsurge of interest in its reading and research,which has solidified into a spiritual mirror aimed at fully representing traditional Chinese culture.From this translation and research history of Chuang Tzu in Germany,a general pattern of"translation lagging behind research"is illustrated.In this process,Germany’s interpretation and acceptance of Chuang Tzu is not only conducted from the perspective of literature and philosophy,but widely extends to other academic realms,including natural science,highlighting its distinct"fusion"and"cross-boundary"features.Examining the cross-cultural presentation and reappearance of Chuang Tzu in Germany is of great enlightening significance to the construction of a translation model for Chinese classics.Thus,a cooperative translation model in which domestic translators and foreign sinologists can draw on each other’s unique strengths during communication could be built.To this end,in the selection of translated classics,translators should pay attention to their own compatibility with the cultural background of the target countries to avoid invalid translation,which might even cause cultural conflicts.Consequently,the translation of Chinese classics will be shifted closer towards their purest original intended purposes.展开更多

Results: After treated with medicated serum for 48 h, the m RNA expression levels of CD70 in PBMCs of SLE patients were significantly higher than those of healthy donors(P<0.05); the DNA methylation levels of CD70 promoter region in PBMCs of SLE patients treated with medicated serum for 48 h were significantly higher than those treated with fetal bovine serum(P<0.01). Conclusion: LCD could inhibit CD70 gene expression in PBMCs of SLE patients by promoting the DNA methylation of CD70 gene promoter.

文摘As the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture,Chuang Tzu and other Chinese literary classics have been translated and introduced to many Western countries in succession,arousing Western attention and thoughts on Chinese culture.Since Chuang Tzu was introduced to Germany by sinologists and missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century,it has triggered a continuous upsurge of interest in its reading and research,which has solidified into a spiritual mirror aimed at fully representing traditional Chinese culture.From this translation and research history of Chuang Tzu in Germany,a general pattern of"translation lagging behind research"is illustrated.In this process,Germany’s interpretation and acceptance of Chuang Tzu is not only conducted from the perspective of literature and philosophy,but widely extends to other academic realms,including natural science,highlighting its distinct"fusion"and"cross-boundary"features.Examining the cross-cultural presentation and reappearance of Chuang Tzu in Germany is of great enlightening significance to the construction of a translation model for Chinese classics.Thus,a cooperative translation model in which domestic translators and foreign sinologists can draw on each other’s unique strengths during communication could be built.To this end,in the selection of translated classics,translators should pay attention to their own compatibility with the cultural background of the target countries to avoid invalid translation,which might even cause cultural conflicts.Consequently,the translation of Chinese classics will be shifted closer towards their purest original intended purposes.

文摘Among the increasing inquiries into the relation of"interality"with various disciplines,interality and rhetoric have rarely been connected directly.This essay attempts to examine interality in rhetorical figures by focusing on how interality works in metaphor under the two criteria of openness and negotiation so as to establish an interality hierarchy.This assumed metaphor interality hierarchy is justified as Form 3(vehicle present,tenor implied)>Form 2(tenor present,vehicle implied)>Form 1(tenor and vehicle both present).By applying this interality hierarchy to analyzing metaphors in the imaginative classic of Chuang Tzu,we find that its rich metaphors in all three forms are well weaved to generate appropriate interality,leaving readers in the adequate and comfortable space of poetry and eloquence.This research is expected not only to theorize the specific nature and function of interality in metaphor,but offer implications for exploring interality in other rhetorical figures as well.
