Rediscovering Analytical Rigor in Traditional Economic Thought:The“Second Integration”and the Making of a Chinese School of Economics

Does traditional Chinese economic thought possess genuine analytical rigor? This question lies at the heart of any serious evaluation of its theoretical value and historical significance. It also matters for understanding how best to preserve, build on its remarkable achievements, and develop its intellectual legacy.Critics such as Schumpeter and Taylor have long argued that the economic reasoning found in ancient China cannot compare with that of classical Greece or medieval Europe.Yet this view often reflects the narrow assumptions of mainstream economics, defining analysis almost entirely in terms of market exchange. As a result,it tends to overlook traditions built around statecraft, governance, and the management of economic order.A careful re-examination and Sino-Western comparative analysis of key thinkers-including Mencius,Guanzi, and Sima Qian-tells a different story.Rooted in China’s distinctive cultural and philosophical heritage, traditional Chinese economic thought not only contains the analytical dimensions(as defined by Schumpeter)but also displays a broader and more diverse set of economic reasoning.Notably, its systematic depth and intellectual precision were,in many respects, remarkably advanced. Therefore, advancing the construction of a Chinese school of economics in the new era under the framework of the“Second Integration”,i.e.,integrating the basic tenets of Marxism with China’s fine traditional culture, should, and indeed can draw essential insights from this analytical tradition. 展开更多

Currently, the number of patients with myopia is increasing rapidly across the globe.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),with its long history and rich experience, has shown promise in effectively managing and treating this condition.Nevertheless, considering the vast amount of research that is currently being conducted, focusing on the utilization of TCM in the management of myopia, there is an urgent requirement for a thorough and comprehensive review. The review would serve to clarify the practical applications of TCM within this specific field, and it would also aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that are at play, providing a deeper understanding of how TCM principles can be effectively integrated into modern medical practices. Here, some modern medical pathogenesis of myopia and appropriate TCM techniques studies are summarized in the prevention and treatment of myopia.Further,we discussed the potential mechanisms and the future research directions of TCM against myopia.Identifying these mechanisms is crucial for understanding how TCM can be effectively utilized in this context. The combination of various TCM methods or the combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine is of great significance for the prevention and control of myopia in the future. 展开更多

Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are pluripotent stem cells isolated from human tissues.Due to their strong self-renewal capacity, pluripotency, and immunomodulatory properties,MSCs have garnered significant attention in cell therapy and tissue regeneration. However, cellular senescence induced by replication or external stimuli can impair MSC proliferation and differentiation, making it crucial to develop interventions that delay or reverse the senescence process. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, senescence stems from spleen and stomach deficiency, kidney deficiency, and related factors;thus, medicines that tonify the kidney and promote Qi and blood circulation play vital roles in anti-senescence therapy.Chinese medicine, characterized by low toxicity and multi-target,multi-functional properties, has become prominent in anti-senescence research. This paper examines the MSC senescence process by discussing its causes, characteristics, and mechanisms, then summarizes how active ingredients in herbal medicines and natural compounds reverse MSC senescence, facilitating the discovery of additional anti-senescence Chinese medicines and their effective components. 展开更多

Background: The human gut microbiome is an important target for disease treatment and prevention. Various microbial species within the complex ecosystem of the microbiome have been shown to play important roles in disease. Identification of bioactive materials capable of altering the abundances of these species both safely and effectively is a major goal in microbiome research. Many traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have been reported to affect the composition of the gut microbiome. Here, we summarize studies that have used TCMs to alter the gut microbiome and discuss the response relationship between TCMs and gut microbial species. Methods: We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, and Knowledge Network databases using the terms “traditional Chinese medicine,” “gut microbiome,” and specific system disease names (endocrine, immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive). Studies were excluded if irrelevant or if the experimental procedures were unclear. Results: TCMs have been reported to affect a wide range of gut microbial taxa spanning major phyla, including Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Verrucomicrobiota, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria. In all, 54 TCMs including compounds and extracts have been tested in rodents and 30 have been examined in human trials. Almost all studies have reported positive results in regulating the gut microbiome as well as modulating corresponding phenotypes, spanning diseases of the endocrine, immune, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive systems. Gut species, including Akkermansia, Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Faecalibacterium, and E. coli, were found to be regulated by 19 TCMs. A network was constructed to visualize the interactions between TCMs and these taxa. Conclusion: There exists a complex and close relationship between intestinal microflora and diseases. Sufficient experimental data and studies have proved that the imbalance of intestinal microflora affects health by mediating metabolism, immune regulation, inflammation and signal transduction. Many characteristic alterations of intestinal microflora are positively correlated with diseases, so intestinal microflora has become a potential risk index and treatment target for many diseases. Many TCMs affect the relative abundances of microbial species in the gut, and therefore may be useful for modulating the gut microbiome. This review provides a reference for prioritizing candidate TCMs from the enormous repertoire of such medicines to test which specific gut microbes are targeted. 展开更多

Tumor growth depends on neoangiogenesis, and current anti-angiogenic therapies face limitations owing to side effects and drug resistance.Traditional Chinese medicines(TCM)have shown potential to inhibit tumor angiogenesis owing to their multi-component and multi-target properties. This review focuses on the mechanisms of action of TCM monomers(e.g.,curcumin,tanshinone IIA,and ginsenoside)through the modulation of key pathways, such as HIF-1α,VEGF/VEGFRs,and Notch signaling, and explores their modulatory effects on the tumor microenvironment(e.g.,tumor-associated macrophage polarization).Despite the low toxicity and multi-targeting advantages of TCM,their clinical translation is still limited by low bioavailability and standardization difficulties. In this review,we further analyze the role of modern approaches, such as nanocarriers(liposomes, polymer nanoparticles,metal-coordinated nanomaterials, and plant exosome-like vesicles),in overcoming these bottlenecks and propose a strategy of combining TCM with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy to overcome drug resistance and enhance therapeutic efficacy.By integrating traditional wisdom with cutting-edge technologies,anti-angiogenesis research in TCM is expected to contribute to the development of safer and more effective individualised cancer treatment. 展开更多

Chemotherapy-induced diarrhea(CID)is a major concern for cancer patients and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality.Currently, the clinical management of CID is limited. The utilization of antidiarrheal medications, such as loperamide and octreotide,is relatively limited because of their unsatisfactory efficacy and adverse effects. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has attracted great interest because of its beneficial effect in treating CID,which has multitarget and low-toxicity therapeutic characteristics.TCM exhibits remarkable therapeutic potential in the prevention and treatment of CID.It can alleviate and treat CID by regulating chemical drug metabolism, improving the integrity of the intestinal barrier, stimulating proliferation while suppressing the apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells, ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammation and regulating bile acids and aquaporins.However,large-scale,randomized,double-blind clinical trials of TCM for the treatment of CID are lacking, and most preclinical experiments have not been translated to clinical trials.Accordingly, this review highlights the clinical efficacy and molecular mechanisms of TCM against CID via PubMed,Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure and proposes that future research on TCM against CID should focus on strengthening the connection from bench to bed, which may help to comprehensively evaluate the therapeutic potential of TCM against CID. 展开更多

Transforming urban spatial structures to promote green and low-carbon development is an effective strategy.Although prior studies have examined the impact of urban polycentricity on carbon emissions and economic development, research on its role in the synergistic relationship between these factors regarding carbon emission efficiency is limited.Furthermore, existing literature often overlooks nonlinear effects and interactions with other urban variables. This paper analyzed data from 295 Chinese cities in 2020,calculating urban population polycentricity, population dispersion indices, and carbon emission efficiency.Utilizing local spatial autocorrelation tools,we reveal interactions among urban population polycentricity, dispersion, carbon emissions, and carbon emission efficiency. We then employ a gradient boosting decision tree model(GBDT)to explore nonlinear and synergistic effects of polycentric urbanization.Key findings include:1)polycentric urbanization in Chinese cities exhibits significant spatial differentiation characteristics. The Polycentricity index is relatively high in economically developed eastern coastal regions with an overall low level, carbon emissions are concentrated in industrialized north-central cities and some Yangtze River Delta hubs, and carbon emission efficiency is the highest in the Yangtze River Delta while relatively low in Northeast China;there are significant spatially heterogeneous interaction characteristics among population polycentricity, population dispersion, carbon emissions, and carbon emission efficiency.2)Urban population polycentricity contributes 9.42%to total carbon emissions and 6.24%to carbon emission efficiency.3)The polycentricity index has a nonlinear impact on carbon emissions and carbon emission efficiency:no significant effect when below 0.50 or above 0.55,increased carbon emissions in 0.50-0.53,and reduced carbon emissions with improved efficiency in 0.53-0.55.4)The polycentricity index has an interaction effect with other variables;specifically, when the polycentricity index is between 0.53 and 0.55,its interaction with urban gross domestic product(GDP),urban population, urban built-up area, green coverage rate in built-up areas, urban technological expenditure, and the proportion of the output value of the secondary industry will reduce carbon emissions and improve carbon emission efficiency. These findings enhance the understanding of urban spatial structures and carbon emissions, providing valuable insights for policymakers in developing green and low-carbon strategies. 展开更多
