This study explores how overseas exchange opportunities might influence Chinese students ’engagement in L2 learning activities and how far such opportunities may satisfy their motivation to study abroad. The analysis of the data, collected and filtered from carefully designed questionnaires and interviews, showed that students ’ L2 learning activities and study-abroad motivations underwent changes after their overseas experiences. Regarding the former, the overseas environment was the cause of the change because it provided students with more chances to talk with native speakers and increased the frequency of their using L2 in their daily life. Regarding the latter, the decline of the students ’ major study-abroad motivations was partly because they tended to treat L2 learning as a tool for realizing other goals and partly because the students had got other important motivations. In view of these findings, suggestions were raised to help future students get better prepared for their overseas study or short-term exchange life. 展开更多

With the development of Chinese economy, a number of students choosing overseas schools for their studies are on the go and China has become a huge market of students for international education providers. However, some destinations for international education have declined in number of Chinese students in recent years, such as the US. More students tend to go to a country that does not only speak English, but also has the similar culture with their own country like Singapore. The objective of this paper is to find out the level of integration of international Chinese students into local Singaporean communities. Specifically, the research focuses on how international Chinese students interact with local Chinese communities and other local residents through activities, such as participating and volunteering in local Chinese events/festivals or public spaces. In addition, it also explores mutual feelings between the Chinese students and the local Singaporean community. Subsequently, the paper also examines about how friendships, institutions, and motivations influence Chinese students' integrations into the local community. Data were obtained primarily through surveys and face-to-face interview. Also, towards the conclusion, the paper gives some preliminary suggestions to engage more international Chinese students and bond them closer to the local community in order to create the best experience during their stay and study in Singapore. 展开更多

Chinese intemational students studying at American universities are generally believed to be intelligent, hard-working and high score achieving, which are confirmed by many sources. People tend to believe that it is simply easy for Chinese students to excel academically at US universities, but this is not necessarily true, especially for students fresh from China. Based on a survey of Chinese students studying at US universities and interviews with American professors, this essay reveals Chinese students' academic frustrations and struggles that have been overlooked due to their high scores, and points out that it is the mismatch between Chinese and American teaching and learning styles that leads to this difficulty. Furthermore, this essay concludes with the author providing suggestions for both Chinese and American educators to help future Chinese students make the most of their higher education opportunity at American universities. 展开更多

Aim:the aim of this methodological article is to reflect on and extend current understandings of the possibilities of narrative inquiry research giving voice to students, and to expand the power of story by sharing the philosophical, theoretical, and methodological considerations of narrative inquiry in an international education context. Background: there has been much discussion about the need in providing a ‘voice' to people across the society, who feel marginalised in many contexts, including international students. There is limited research about Chinese students studying in Australia. In particular, the learning experience of Chinese nursing students has not been fully explored nor understood.Discussion: to enhance teaching and learning in international education contexts, and to cater better to international students, it is important to understand their experiences and perspectives. There is no better way to achieve this level of understanding than to let students' voices be heard, to let them speak for and about themselves because reality exists within these students' perceptions. Conclusions: in the context of international education, narrative inquiry as a research methodology, when used with sensitivity and reflexivity, through the power of stories, offers a new dimension in the international education research. 展开更多

Language acquisition is a system with four components: language development, academic development, cognitive development and sociocultural development. Based on this theory, Chinese students in the United States are studied from three perspectives: linguistically, culturally, and social psychologically. It indicated that, to help Chinese students develop their English performance and cultural appreciation in this diverse world, the profession of English teaching in China should cover a variety of domains, including linguistic, cultural and psychological input. Both American and Chinese education can benefit from this special group of Chinese students if they can be better understood, and used as a bridge between China and U. S. cultural and academic exchange. In the meantime, the mirror held up to the Chinese students in these perspectives reflects not only who they are but also who they can become. 展开更多

Under an environment full of competitive stress, students tend to form negative emotions, and the time for them to engage in physical exercise is greatly limited due to overwhelming academic tasks. Therefore,in this paper,we focus on acknowledging the purpose of physical exercise, and how physical exercise affects the mental health of students under stressful circumstances but not in the context of leisure.Questionnaire was distributed to participants with an average age of 20,to investigate their preference, frequency, and reason for exercising, and their attitude towards it.Our results showed that participants think that exercise can strengthen the body, relieve stress, improve fitness and interpersonal relationship regardless of their purpose such as interests, emotional necessity and even out of non-subjective ideas. In conclusion, physical exercise helped to improve students’mental health especially under great pressure and ultimately,it will enhance their academics and bring about the unity of mind and body. 展开更多

Most non-native speakers do have difficulty in developing native-like oracy due to vast differences in pronunciation between L1 and L2, adult ESL learners in particular. As Peter and Susan pointed in Teaching American English Pronunciation(1992), there are specific problem syllables with different language groups. As an ESL teacher from China, I assume it necessary to find out whether these sounds really trouble Chinese students in the ESL class I observed. I am going to pick out the most frequently occurred problem sounds and take notes how the teacher deal with them in class. In this paper, based on classroom observation and interviews, I analyzed problematic English vowels and consonants from Chinese learners, and the corresponding mediations for ESL teacher. 展开更多

English is one of the world’s most widely studied and spoken languages now.In China, the local variety of English, referred to in this study as China English from the World Englishes perspective, has been widely debated regarding its recognition as an English variety among Chinese speakers. This study examines the perceptions of Chinese graduate students majoring in English in Thailand toward World Englishes,China English, and their tolerance of China English in the Chinese EFL classroom after completing a 15-week World Englishes course.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven students and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated that while students acknowledged the legitimacy of World Englishes and China English in various contexts, they resisted its use in English language classrooms in China.Instead, they preferred conventional pedagogical approaches that prioritize native English varieties, particularly British and American English. These findings suggest that language educators in China should integrate diverse English varieties into the classroom by incorporating authentic learning materials and designing relevant learning activities.Such an approach would not only expose students to English diversity but also enhance their intercultural competence and global citizenship. 展开更多
