“Tasks”versus“Disciplines”:The Comprehensive Surveys of Natural Resources by the Chinese Academy of Sciences,and the Politics of Science Policy in the People’s Republic of China

As soon as the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)was founded by the new government of the People’s Republic of China in 1949,the principles of“linking theory with practice”and“conducting research to serve the people... As soon as the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)was founded by the new government of the People’s Republic of China in 1949,the principles of“linking theory with practice”and“conducting research to serve the people”set the framework for its scientific studies.How to balance their obligations to facilitate national economic construction with their desires to advance disciplinary scientific developments posed a knotty problem that frustrated those who organized and engaged in scientific research across the country,and in the CAS in particular.Against this background,the slogan“let tasks lead disciplines”was proposed as an effective solution.However,how exactly to put this into practice became a pressing issue,as CAS scientists and scholars debated the relationship between tasks and advances within scientific disciplines.This paper examines these debates as they were carried out in the case of the comprehensive surveys of natural resources organized by the CAS,focusing especially on different understandings of the relationship between“tasks”and“disciplines”within the CAS in the early 1960s,and examining the impact and legacy of“letting tasks lead disciplinary developments,”with possible lessons for the formulation of scientific plans today. 展开更多

Working-memory training improves developmental dyslexia in Chinese children 被引量:8

Although plasticity in the neural system underlies working memory, and working memory can be improved by training, there is thus far no evidence that children with developmental dyslexia can benefit from working-memory training. In the present study, thirty dyslexic children aged 8-11 years were recruited from an elementary school in Wuhan, China. They received working-memory training including training in visuospatial memory, verbal memory, and central executive tasks. The difficulty of the tasks was adjusted based on the performance of each subject, and the training sessions lasted 40 minutes per day, for 5 weeks. The results showed that working-memory training significantly enhanced performance on the nontrained working memory tasks such as the visuospatial, the verbal domains, and central executive tasks in children with developmental dyslexia. More importantly, the visual rhyming task and reading fluency task were also significantly improved by training. Progress on working memory measures was related to changes in reading skills. These experimental findings indicate that working memory is a pivotal factor in reading development among children with developmental dyslexia, and interventions to improve working memory may help dyslexic children to become more proficient in reading. 展开更多

As one of the most widely used languages in the world,Chinese language is distinct from most western languages in many properties,thus providing a unique opportunity for understanding the brain basis of human language and cognition.In recent years,non-invasive neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)blaze a new trail to comprehensively study specific neural correlates of Chinese language processing and Chinese speakers.We reviewed the application of functional MRI(fMRI)in such studies and some essential findings on brain systems in processing Chinese.Specifically,for example,the application of task fMRI and resting-state fMRI in observing the process of reading and writing the logographic characters and producing or listening to the tonal speech.Elementary cognitive neuroscience and several potential research directions around brain and Chinese language were discussed,which may be informative for future research. 展开更多

Effects of the Xu-Argument-Based Continuation on L2 Syntactic Complexity:The Case of Verb-Argument Constructions

This study investigated the impact of the xu-argument-based continuation on Chinese high school students’English syntactic complexity captured using verb-argument constructions(VACs)over an 8-week period.Participants were two comparable groups of students:one group worked with English input texts(i.e.,E-E),while the other worked with Chinese input texts with the same content(i.e.,C-E).The results showed that over time,the E-E group exhibited a greater tendency to use a wider range of VACs,such as caused-motion constructions,attributives,passives,and phrasal verbs.At the same time,they reduced their use of simpler VACs like intransitive-motion and simple transitive constructions,especially when compared to the C-E group.This pattern was also evident in the topic-based writing during the posttest.These findings strongly support the effectiveness of xu-argument-based continuation tasks in promoting the development of L2 VAC knowledge.They suggest that tasks combining language input with output can significantly enhance learners’ability to use more sophisticated VACs. 展开更多

英文自然语言查询转SQL语句(Text-to-SQL)任务的模型迁移到中文工业Text-to-SQL任务时,由于工业数据集的可解释差且比较分散,会出现数据库的表名列名等信息与问句中关键信息的表示形式不一致以及问句中的列名隐含在语义中等问题导致模... 英文自然语言查询转SQL语句(Text-to-SQL)任务的模型迁移到中文工业Text-to-SQL任务时,由于工业数据集的可解释差且比较分散,会出现数据库的表名列名等信息与问句中关键信息的表示形式不一致以及问句中的列名隐含在语义中等问题导致模型精确匹配率变低。针对迁移过程中出现的问题,提出了对应的解决方法并构建修改后的模型。首先,在数据使用过程中融入工厂元数据信息以解决表示形式不一致以及列名隐含在语义中的问题;然后,根据中文语言表达方式的特性,使用基于相对位置的自注意力模型直接通过问句以及数据库模式信息识别出where子句的value值;最后,根据工业问句查询内容的特性,使用微调后的基于变换器的双向编码器表示技术(BERT)对问句进行分类以提高模型对SQL语句结构预测的准确率。构建了一个基于铝冶炼行业的工业数据集,并在该数据集上进行实验验证。结果表明所提模型在工业测试集上的精确匹配率为74.2%,对比英文数据集Spider上各阶段主流模型的效果后可以看出,所提模型能有效处理中文工业Text-to-SQL任务。 展开更多
