Continuity is the foremost defining characteristic of Chinese civilization. It ensures that the evolution of this civilization respects the fine traditions and stays on the right course throughout its creative course.Meanwhile, creativity imparts ceaseless vitality to this civilization, serving as the intrinsic propulsive force that fuels its evolution. The rise of Song Studies marks one of the symbolic events in the transformation in the Chinese ideological and cultural realm. It encapsulates the dialectical unity between continuity and creativity that characterizes Chinese civilization.Song Studies adhere to the traditional classic interpretations, center the core values around“benevolence,”and pursue the way of sages, which reflect the continuity of Chinese civilization. They also embody creativity. This is manifested in the emergence of a new academic spirit that emphasizes the seeking of truth and reason,a new academic ethos that involves questioning classics in the process of their dissemination and interpreting them with one’s own insight,as well as the fusion of philosophical speculation with social practice.Conducting an integrated analysis of the defining characteristics of Chinese civilization and the rise of Song Studies helps us gain a thorough understanding of the dialectical unity between the continuity and creativity of Chinese civilization through the interactions between history and reality. It also enables us to effectively address the relationship between inheritance and transformation,as well as between maintaining core values and pursuing creativity throughout its ongoing development. 展开更多

During the“Axial Age,”Chinese civilization experienced a distinctive human rights awareness characterized by its endogeneity, autonomy, and originality. This awareness, based primarily on humanism, populism, and naturalism, emphasized respect for human beings, highlighting the importance of caring for, respecting, and protecting people, and focusing on“benefiting the people,”“nurturing the people,”“enriching the people,”and“prospering the people.”It reflected an awareness of human rights such as the rights to life, personality, subsistence, development, and environment. This human rights awareness, oriented towards values such as“achieving benevolence,”“valuing goodness,”“revering righteousness,”“cherishing harmony,”and“seeking the public good,”established a cognitive logic that unifies human nature, virtue, and rationality. It featured a human rights spirit that is not dominated by divine authority, based on moral and ethical philosophy, and oriented towards“positive”rights. This awareness delved into the value of being human and the meaning of human existence, demonstrating creativity and innovation, and marking a significant breakthrough in the history of human rights civilization. The ideological wisdom, spiritual strength, and practical pathways contained in this human rights awareness not only laid the foundation for the human rights thought of classical Chinese civilization but are also indispensable for contemporary China’s commitment to the“two combinations”.It holds important practical significance for advancing Chinese modernization and creating a modern human rights civilization for the Chinese nation. 展开更多

Jade replaced bronze as one of the major criterions of the birth of civilizations. Ye explains jade as a mystical witchcraft which has a sacred power for the ancient people. Because the jade is produced in the water, and has the similar color with the sky, both of which have significance for the origin of life, jade is thus considered to be the origin of power. The notion of jade-god gave birth to the civilization in ancient China and triggered competition among the settlements, which in turn, advanced the development of civilization. 展开更多

Chinese civilization is the only ancient civilization thriving to this day seems to be a common view in the historical academia and Chinese society as well.Culture is a way that human beings actively adapt to the surroundings and keep consistence with environmental change. All cultures created by human beings are changing,so is the Chinese culture. The physical and cultural evolution presented by the archaeological discoveries and related historical researches show that Chinese culture is multi-sourced and multicultural. This is the secret for the Chinese culture to retain its vitality. The reasons that Chinese civilization is the only civilization thriving to this day among all of ancient civilizations in the world include the ancestral worship, the identity to common ancestors, traditions of writing pedigrees and history books, the longhistory Chinese character system and the creative thinking and cultural methods of interpreting new thoughts by using traditional Chinese thinking and cultural structures.Especially in modern times, impacted by the nationalism trend, the national state narration built for meeting the requirement of the national state"historical memory"left us the strong impression of Chinese civilization being the only continued civilization and fostered the affective identification with the common history. 展开更多

Chinese civilization has continuously developed and formed on the foundation of China’s unique natural environment. Its formation process and cultural characteristics are intimately and intricately linked to the historical evolution of the natural environment, including changes in climate, hydrological systems, and land use.Currently, academic scholarship on the historical evolution of Chinese civilization is predominantly based on the findings of the humanities;the influence of natural environmental change has not been systematically and scientifically considered in unveiling the formation and development of the civilization.Adopting a perspective of deep interdisciplinary integration between the natural sciences and humanities, this study synthesizes existing research on the historical changes in natural geographical elements, such as the climate and environment, since the Holocene. It systematically reviews evidence from disciplines such as archaeology and historical geography, comprehensively analyzes the natural environmental factors within the spatiotemporal process of the formation of Chinese civilization, and reveals the significance of the human-environment relationship in shaping its evolution.Based on this systematic review, the study presents three main scientific findings:(1)The uniqueness of China’s geographical environment laid the foundation for the endogenous nature and the fundamental pattern of“unity in diversity”of Chinese civilization.(2)Climate change facilitated the early origins of Chinese civilization and subsequently drove ethnic exchange and integration throughout its historical development.(3)Throughout historical periods, the primary strategy of the human-environment relationship was human adaptation;yet, the influence of human agency on the natural world progressively increased. In conclusion, there is an urgent need to conduct systematic and scientific research on Chinese civilization from the perspective of the human-environment relationship.Through in-depth interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration between the fields of geography, climatology, history, and archaeology,we can deepen our understanding of the historical development of Chinese civilization and provide historical lessons and insights for addressing contemporary environmental challenges. 展开更多

The HeQin policy is a unique political strategy in ancient China for handling ethnic relations, and constitutes a historical practice of ethnic interaction, exchange, and integration of the Chinese nation. The purpose of forming and maintaining HeQin-based ethnic relations is not only to end wars or eliminate the risk of war,but also to further achieve ethnic peace and friendship through the establishment and maintenance of HeQin relations.Ethnic HeQin represents a historical practice of the Chinese nation's unremitting pursuit of peace—a fine tradition—and serves as a concentrated embodiment of the peace-oriented nature of Chinese civilization. Most of the historical episodes of peaceful and friendly ethnic relations in China began with the formation of HeQin-based ethnic relations;the sustained development of such peaceful situations was mostly based on the continuous maintenance of HeQin relations;and the eventual breakdown of peaceful and friendly situations often started with the disruption of HeQin relations. The frequent formation and long-term maintenance of ethnic HeQin relations in Chinese history have,to a certain extent, fostered the development of a historical mindset and fine tradition of resolving ethnic contradictions and conflicts through peaceful negotiations. 展开更多

"Proto-state" and "chiefdom" are two major theories used in exploring the origin of Chinese civilization. There is much debate about the relationship between the two and about their academic significance. In several respects, the questions answered by the two theories are distinctly different: the perspective of the one is emic, of the other etic, and their research paths are respectively humanistic and scientific. The chiefdom theory derives from anthropology;it is evolutionist and its theories are constructed by analogy. Its strong point lies in exploring the mechanisms of the development of social complexity, but when used in archaeological research, the logic employed is deductive reasoning. The protostate theory comes from Chinese archaeology, and thus is historicist. Its strong point lies in understanding cultural meanings, and the research logic it employed is inductive reasoning. The two theories represent research paths that are complementary but not interchangeable. The purpose of exploring the origins of Chinese civilization is not only to find the truth of history, but also to understand and inherit its culture. Therefore, it is important to fully combine the two theories in building the discourse system of Chinese archaeology. 展开更多

Silk is a unique token of ancient Chinese Civilization that is not owned by any of the other three ancient civilizations of the world. It originated in China, synchronized with the start of the entire Chinese Civilization and germinated in various areas as early as the Neolithic period. Sichuan, the known "Land of Abundance" gifted with unrivalled natural and cultural resources, used to be one of the cradles where the Chinese silk culture originated and evolved, and a key hub for the Silk Road in history. Ever since the Han and Tang Dynasties, Sichuan brocade, Sichuan embroidery, Sichuan cloth, lacquerware, Qiong bamboo rod, as well as other specialties from Sichuan have found their way into the trades along the Silk Road, earning Sichuan an especially distinctive reputation. Today, with the cultural communication and cooperation made by the Belt and Road Initiative, Sichuan will also play its due part in promoting mutual learning between countries. 展开更多

The Chinese civilization is a highly developed,long-standing and comprehensive entity, materially, spiritually and institutionally created by the Chinese nation.Around 6000 BC,Early China in the cultural sense bears its root, marking the first stage of the origin of Chinese civilization.Around 4000 BC,Early China in the cultural sense formally takes shape, marking the second stage of the origin of Chinese civilization.Around 3100 BC,with the emergence of Chinese civilization, the stage of the Archaic State begins.Around 2100 BC,Early China enters the stage of the Dynastic State.Chinese civilization, with its universalistic cosmology and united structure,is of a unique"Tianxia(all under heaven)civilization"pattern. The"Tianxia civilization"patern, together with other cultural genes such as ritualism, ancestral worship, sincerity, benevolence, and coexistence of all in harmony,is the root cause for the continuous development of Chinese civilization to date. 展开更多

As an overseas Chinese,Wang Gungwu lived through the colonial era and the post-World WarⅡanti-colonial period, witnessing the ethnic separation and racial hatred that arose during the nation-state building processes in Southeast Asia.He recognized the dangers of narrow nationalism and the impracticality of a singleethnic nation-state building plan in China and East Asia.Wang believes the cultural and spiritual unity embodied in the concept of All-under-heaven(tianxia天下),arguing that this idea enables Chinese people to maintain their cultural Chineseness. In Renewal:The Chinese State and the New Global History,Wang examines China from an outside point of view through the lens of global history, distinguishing between the three levels of"tianxia,""empire,"and"nation-state."While there are some ambiguities and contradictions in his theoretical framework, his external observations offer a keen understanding of the inclusiveness and continuity of Chinese civilization. He proposes that the best path for"renewing China"lies in reforging Chinese civilization to"establish a civilization that its people all agree will be modern and admirable." 展开更多
