DSC results were used to calculate the activation energy and nucleation work of primaryα(Al) phase. The results show that the values of activation energy and nucleation work are decreased and the nucleation frequency is increased with the additions of Ce and Sr to the alloys. Moreover, the grain size of dendriticα(Al) phase is well refined, and the nucleation temperatures of primaryα(Al) dendrites are decreased with the additions of Ce and Sr. The effects of elements Ce and Sr additions on kinetic nucleation of primary α(Al) phases were also discussed in hypoeutectic Al-7%Si-Mg cast alloy.展开更多

The results indicate that the Mg-3Sn-2Sr ternary alloy is mainly composed ofα-Mg, primary and eutectic SrMgSn, and Mg2Sn phases. After the additions of 1.0%Ce, 1.0%Y and 1.0%Gd to the Mg-3Sn-2Sr alloy, the Mg12Ce, YMgSn, GdMgSn and/or Mg17Sr2 phases are formed, respectively. At the same time, the formation of the primary SrMgSn phase is suppressed and the coarse needle-like primary SrMgSn phase is modified and refined. In addition, the additions of 1.0% Ce, 1.0% Y and 1.0% Gd to the Mg-3Sn-2Sr alloy can simultaneously improve the tensile and creep properties of the alloy. Among the Ce-, Y-and Gd-containing alloys, the tensile properties of the Ce-containing alloy are relatively higher than those of the Y-and Gd-containing alloys.展开更多

DSC results were applied to calculate the values of activity energy and nucleation work of eutectic nucleation for the alloys. These values were decreased and the eutectic nucleation frequency was increased with the addition of Ce and Sr to the alloys. Moreover, the morphology of eutectic silicon in the modified alloys was partially or fully modified as fine, fibrous or coral, and DSC plots show that the eutectic undercooling of A1-7 wt pct Si-Mg alloys were increased with additions of modified agents. The mechanism of eutectic modification is combined actions of the accelerated nucleation and the restricted growth.展开更多
