Women aged 18 to 3... Introduction: Sickle cell disease is one of the most common autosomal recessive inherited diseases. Its prevalence is increasing due to the perpetuity of carriers of the trait who are able to marry. Women aged 18 to 35 years constitute the most reproductive age group. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence of sickle cell trait among women aged 18 to 35 years and the attitude of women carriers towards the choice of a carrier spouse. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical aims conducted from March to September 2024 in Kisangani. A total of 215 women aged 18 to 35 years presented for screening for sickle cell trait. This study described the following parameters: Sociodemographic data (age, level of education, socioeconomic level, marital status), obstetric and medical history (obstetric formula, sickle cell disease, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, asthma), knowledge of sickle cell disease (etiological classification, transmission, prevention, high-risk marriages, clinical manifestations, progression of the disease), attitude of the woman in relation to the choice of an AS spouse, as well as the reasons justifying each attitude. Results: The prevalence of sickle cell trait was 23.7% (51/215). A total of 64.3% of respondents had accepted the choice of spouse before confirmation of carrier status and 73.8% had refused after confirmation of carrier status. Choice was significantly related to age (p-value = 0.027), occupation (p-value = 0.015), parity (p-value = 0.039) and gesture (p-value = 0.034) before test. The ignorance of the union at risk was associated with the risk (p = 0.005;OR: 9.10;CI 95%: 2.03 - 4.81) of accepting the choice of a spouse carrying the trait. Conclusion: The prevalence of sickle cell trait among women aged 18 to 35 years in Kisangani remains within the limits of that of the general population. The choice of a spouse carrying sickle cell trait is associated with the woman’s age, her profession, parity, gestation and her knowledge about high-risk unions. Screening campaigns and health education sessions enable women carrying sickle cell trait to make a wise choice. 展开更多

Solar energy storage by dark Mn-doped CaO-based heat carriers

CaO-based heat carriers have shown great prospects for thermochemical energy storage in concentrated solar power systems due to the features such as rich reserves,environmental safety,high energy storage densities and high operation temperatures.However,the density decay because of sintering and poor direct solar absorption of white CaO based heat carriers are the two main obstacles lying on the way to the realistic applications.This work introduced dark Mn-based inert support into calcium heat carriers,attempting to solve the above problems simultaneously.As an inert support,the finely dispersed Ca_(2)MnO_(4) functioned as the metal framework to resist CaCO_(3)/CaO sintering.Consequently,the cyclic stability of CaO-based heat carriers,resulting in the high energy storage densities of~2000 kJ/kg even over 20 cycles.As a dark material,Ca_(2)MnO_(4) successfully darkened CaO-based heat carriers,thereby greatly enhanced the direct solar absorption.In addition,the granulation of CaO-based heat carriers was also studied.The pellets showed satisfactory attrition resistance with only 9.85 wt% mass loss over 3200 cycles.In general,good physicochemical performance of Mn-doped CaO-based heat carrier endows it with great prospects for solar energy storage. 展开更多

Revealing the dynamics of charge carriers in organic/inorganic hybrid FS-COF/WO_(3) S-scheme heterojunction for boosted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Designing high-efficiency photocatalysts by the construction of organic/inorganic heterojunctions is considered to be an effective approach for improving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)activity.This work designed and built unique S-scheme heterojunctions by in-situ growing inorganic WO_(3) nanoparticles with excellent oxidation ability on fused-sulfone-modified covalent organic frameworks(FS-COF)with strong reduction ability.It is found that FS-COF and WO_(3) have a well-matched staggered band alignment.The best-designed FS-COF/WO_(3)-20%exhibits a maximum photocatalytic HER rate of 24.7 mmol g^(-1) h^(-1) under visible light irradiation,which is 1.4 times greater than the pure FS-COF.Moreover,photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be separated and utilized more efficiently thanks to the FS-COF/WO_(3) heterojunction's ability to create a favorable internal electric field resulting from the difference in work functions between FS-COF and WO_(3),which speeds up the transfer dynamics of photoinduced electrons from WO_(3) to FS-COF through an additional interfacial electron-transfer channel obeying the directional S-scheme migration mechanism.Furthermore,the S-scheme migration mechanism of photoinduced charge carriers instead of the type-II mechanism was confirmed by the signal intensity of•O_(2)−species from spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance spectra over the single component and the formed heterojunction.It ensures the photoexcited electrons maintain on the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of FS-COF with a strong reduction ability to participate in photocatalytic HER,resulting in a significantly boosted H_(2) evolution rate.Based on organic/inorganic coupling,this work offers a strategy for creating particular S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts. 展开更多

Efficient and stable photocathodes with versatility are of significance in photoassisted lithium-ion batteries(PLIBs),while there is always a request on fast carrier transport in electrochemical active photocathodes.Present work proposes a general approach of creating bulk heterojunction to boost the carrier mobility of photocathodes by simply laser assisted embedding of plasmonic nanocrystals.When employed in PLIBs,it was found effective for synchronously enhanced photocharge separation and transport in light charging process.Additionally,experimental photon spectroscopy,finite difference time domain method simulation and theoretical analyses demonstrate that the improved carrier dynamics are driven by the plasmonic-induced hot electron injection from metal to TiO_(2),as well as the enhanced conductivity in TiO2 matrix due to the formation of oxygen vacancies after Schottky contact.Benefiting from these merits,several benchmark values in performance of TiO2-based photocathode applied in PLIBs are set,including the capacity of 276 mAh g^(−1) at 0.2 A g^(−1) under illumination,photoconversion efficiency of 1.276%at 3 A g^(−1),less capacity and Columbic efficiency loss even through 200 cycles.These results exemplify the potential of the bulk heterojunction strategy in developing highly efficient and stable photoassisted energy storage systems. 展开更多

Performance analysis of nanostructured lipid carriers for chemical sunscreen agents

Nanolipid carriers and traditional emulsion containing chemical sunscreens were prepared using emulsification combined with ultrasonic technology.The nanolipid carriers showed superior performance in sunscreen encapsulation,slow release and skin impermeability,and provided an excellent nanolipid slow-release encapsulation system for sunscreens.As observed by transmission electron microscopy,the nanolipid carriers were spherical shape,with smooth surface and uniform distribution,and the particle sizes were mainly concentrated in the range of 230 to 250 nm without agglomeration.The nanolipid carriers significantly improved the sunscreen performance through the synergistic effect of scattering and chemical absorption,and showed better UV stability than traditional sunscreen,indicating their photoprotective function.In vitro release experiments showed that the nano-lipidic carriers exhibited better release control when loaded with octyl methoxycinnamate(OMC)and butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane(BDFM)sunscreens than traditional traditional emulsions,with the cumulative release rate of OMC in the nano-lipidic carriers decreasing by 17.17% to 30.24% within 12 hours,and that of BDFM decreasing by 26.67% to 44.67%.26.67% to 44.16%.The results of the in vitro permeation experiment further confirmed that the nanolipid carriers could effectively encapsulate the sunscreens and prevent them from penetrating the skin barrier,thus reducing the skin irritation.Compared with traditional traditional emulsion,the cumulative penetration of OMC in nanostructured lipid carriers was 2.24μg/cm^(2)in 4 hours,while the cumulative penetration was reduced by 68.05%.The cumulative penetration of BDFM in the nanostructured lipid carrier was 3.24μg/cm^(2),with a 64.04%reduction in cumulative penetration. 展开更多

Fe-doped CuCrO_(2) catalyst CuCr_(1-x)Fe_xO_(2) series were prepared by the sol-gel method with different Fe contents.The structure and properties of the catalysts were investigated by XRD(X-ray diffraction),SEM(scanning electron microscope),and XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy)and the purification effect on NO_(x) and PM was measured through simulated emission experiments.The results indicate that CuCrO_(2) catalyst has good catalytic activity,the maximum NO_(x) conversion rate can be up to 28.15%,and the ignition temperature of PM can be reduced to 285℃.When the molecular ratio of Cr:Fe=9:1,the catalyst can achieve better catalytic effect,the maximum NO_(x) conversion rate will be up to 30.25%and the PM ignition temperature can be reduced to 280℃.In addition,the catalytic activity of catalyst supported on different carriers was also studied.The results show that catalyst on SiC foam ceramic carrier has better catalytic activity than that on cordierite honeycomb ceramic carrier.The maximum NO_(x) conversion of CuCrO_(2) and CuCr_(0.9)Fe_(0.1)O_(2) can be increased by 0.72%and 1.33%respectively,and the PM ignition temperature can be further reduced by 15 and 5℃respectively. 展开更多

The structural design of n-i-p in antimony selenide(Sb_(2)Se_(3))thin film solar cells can effectively improve the low carrier collection efficiency caused by the lower doping concentration of Sb_(2)Se_(3).However,the unideal carrier transport ability of the intrinsic light-absorbing layer remains a major limitation for its power conversion efficiency improvement.Herein,it is discovered that the carrier transport in Sb_(2)Se_(3)thin films strongly depends on the film thickness of the absorber layer in n-i-p structure.By exploring the carrier transport mechanism under different thicknesses of light-absorbing layers,a suitable absorber layer with thickness of 550 nm is demonstrated can effectively separate,transport,and extract photogenerated carriers in Sb_(2)Se_(3)solar cells.Finally,the vapor transport deposition processed Sb_(2)Se_(3)solar cells achieve the highest PCE of 7.62%with a short-circuit current density of 30.71 mA·cm^(-2).This finding provides a constructive guidance for the future researches on Sb_(2)Se_(3)thin film solar cells with n-i-p structure. 展开更多

Polyethyleneimine(PEI),as a widely used polymer material in the field of gene delivery,has been extensively studied for modification and shielding to reduce its cytotoxicity.However,research aimed at preparing degradable PEI is scarce.In this work,the hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))oxidation method was used to introduce degradable amide groups in the PEI and a series of oxidized PEI22k(oxPEI22k)with different degrees of oxidation were synthesized by regulating the dosage of H_(2)O_(2).The relationship between the oxidation degree of oxPEI22k and the gene transfection efficiency of oxPEI22k was studied in detail,confirming that the oxPEI22k with oxidation degrees of 16.7%and 28.6%achieved improved transfection efficiency compared to unmodified PEI.These oxPEI22k also proved reduced cytotoxicity and improved degradability.Further,this strategy was extended to the synthesis of low-molecular-weight oxPEI1.8k.The oxPEI1.8k with suitable oxidation degree also achieved improved transfection efficiency and reduced cytotoxicity.In brief,this work provided high-efficiency and low-cytotoxicity degradable gene delivery carriers by regulating the oxidation degree of PEI,which was of great significance for promoting clinical applications of PEI. 展开更多

Investigating lattice vibrations through Raman spectroscopy is a crucial method for studying crystalline materials.Carriers can interact with lattices and influence lattice vibrations;thus,it is feasible to study the effect of photo-generated carriers on phonons by analyzing changes in the Raman spectra of semiconductors.Rutile is one of the predominant crystalline phases of TiO_(2),which is a widely utilized metal oxide semiconductor.In this work,rutile TiO_(2) is coated on a thinned optical fiber to concentrate ultraviolet light energy within the material,thereby enhancing the generation of carriers and amplifying the changes in the Raman spectra.A Raman detection laser with a wavelength of 532 nm is utilized to collect the Raman spectra of rutile TiO_(2) during irradiation.Using this setup,the impact of photo-generated carriers on the phonons corresponding to Raman vibrational modes is researched.The localization and non-radiative recombination of photo-generated carriers contribute to a reduction in both the frequencies and lifetimes of phonons.This work provides a novel approach to researching the effect of carriers on phonons. 展开更多

Herein,the co-pyrolysis reaction characteristics of corn straw(CS)and bituminous coal in the presence of ilmenite oxygen carriers(OCs)are investigated via thermogravimetry coupled with mass spectrometry.The results reveal that the participation of OCs weakens the devolatilization intensity of co-pyrolysis.When the CS blending ratio is<50%,the mixed fuel exhibits positive synergistic effects.The fitting results according to the Coats-Redfern integral method show that the solid-solid interaction between OCs and coke changes the reaction kinetics,enhancing the co-pyrolysis reactivity at the high-temperature zone(750-950C).The synergistic effect is most prominent at a 30%CS blending ratio,with copyrolysis activation energy in the range of 26.35-40.57 kJ·mol^(-1). 展开更多

Objective:Hemophilia carriers(HCs),who are heterozygous for mutations in the clotting factor VIII/clotting factor IX gene(F8 or F9),may have a wide range of clotting factor levels,from very low,similar to afflicted males,to the upper limit of normal,and may experience mental health issues.The purpose of this study was to provide genetic information on mothers of hemophilia patients and to understand the clotting factor activity and phenotype of HCs.Additionally,we aimed to investigate the mental health status of HCs in China.Methods:A total of 127 hemophilia mothers,including 93 hemophilia A(HA)mothers and 34 hemophilia B(HB)mothers,were enrolled in this study.Long distance PCR,multiplex PCR,and Sanger sequencing were used to analyze mutations in F8 or F9.Coagulation factor activity was detected by a one-stage clotting assay.The Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90,China/Mandarin version)was given to HCs at the same time to assess their mental health.Results:A total of 90.6%of hemophilia mothers were diagnosed genetically as carriers,with inversion in intron 22 and missense mutations being the most common mutation types in HA and HB carriers,respectively.The median clotting factor level in carriers was 0.74 IU/mL(ranging from 0.09 to 1.74 IU/mL)compared with 1.49 IU/mL(ranging from 0.93 to 1.89 IU/mL)in noncarriers,of which 14.3%of HCs had clotting factor levels of 0.40 IU/mL or below.A total of 53.8%(7/13)of HA carriers with low clotting factor levels(less than 0.50 IU/mL)had a history of bleeding,while none of the HB carriers displayed a bleeding phenotype.The total mean score and the global severity index of the SCL-90 for surveyed HCs were 171.00(±60.37)and 1.78(±0.59),respectively.A total of 67.7%of the respondents had psychological symptoms,with obsessive-compulsive disorder being the most prevalent and severe.The pooled estimates of all nine factors were significantly higher than those in the general population(P<0.05).Conclusions:The detection rate of gene mutations in hemophilia mothers was 90.6%,with a median clotting factor level of 0.74 IU/mL,and 14.3%of HCs had a clotting factor level of 0.40 IU/mL or below.A history of bleeding was present in 41.2%of HCs with low clotting factor levels(less than 0.50 IU/mL).Additionally,given the fragile mental health status of HCs in China,it is critical to develop efficient strategies to improve psychological well-being. 展开更多

Ethane chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation(CL-ODH)to ethylene is a new technology for converting ethane to ethylene.In the current study MeO/LaCoO_(3)(MeO=Fe_(2)O_(3),NiO or Co_(2)O_(3))composite metal oxides were prepared via citrate gel and impregnation methods,and used as oxygen carriers for CL-ODH.X-ray diffraction results indicated that all oxygen carriers had a perovskite structure even after eight redox cycles.Under a reaction temperature of 650°C,a reaction pressure of 0.1 MPa,and a weight hourly space velocity(WHSV)of 7500 mL/(g·h),ethane conversion over Co_(2)O_(3)/LaCoO_(3) reached 100%and ethylene selectivity reached 60%,both of which were better than corresponding values attained over Fe_(2)O_(3)/LaCoO_(3) and NiO/LaCoO_(3).Ethylene selectivity remained stable for 80 cycles over Co_(2)O_(3)/LaCoO_(3),then decreased gradually after 80 cycles.X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results and evaluation results indicated that lattice oxygen and O_(2)2-had a direct relationship with ethane conversion and ethylene selectivity.Co_(2)O_(3)/LaCoO_(3) exhibited a strong capacity to release and absorb oxygen,mainly due to interaction between Co_(2)O_(3) and LaCoO_(3). 展开更多

Influence of Bow Design on Ice Resistance for Arctic LNG Carriers

In order to understand the influence of bow shape on ice resistance and provide guidelines for hull line design in the early design stage,an investigation of the impact of bow shape on ice resistance for the Arctic LNG carriers is carried out based on semi-empirical methods.Firstly,some typical semi-empirical formulas developed for ice resistance estimation of cargo carriers in different ice conditions are summarized.Then,formulas appropriate for ice resistance estimation of Arctic LNG carriers under different ice conditions are verified according to the result comparison between semi-empirical formulas and experimental tests.The comparison result indicates that the Lindqvist formula is appropriate for ice resistance estimation in level ice conditions,Zuev and Dobrodeev formula for ice resistance estimation in broken ice conditions,and Dobrodeev formula for ice resistance estimation in brash ice conditions.After that,the parameters considered in the selected formulas are summarized,and the influence of critical parameters on ice resistance is analyzed.Some parameters describing the ship's bow shape characteristic like ship breadth,waterline angle and stem angle greatly influence the ice resistance.Ice resistance increases with both the growth of ship breadth under all ice conditions and the growth of stem angle in level ice and broken ice conditions while ice resistance decreases with the development of waterline angle under all ice conditions.Finally,the optimization of the bow shape is discussed,and an optimized bow shape with both a large waterline angle and low stem angle is proposed.The optimized bow shape can decrease ice resistance by 9.9%in the level ice condition and reduce ice resistance by 11.3%in the brash ice condition. 展开更多

The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life of chronic hepatitis B virus carriers at the Yalgado OUEDRAOGO University hospital, and to identify the factors associated with this quality of life. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Yalgado OUEDRAOGO University Hospital from January 31 to May 31, 2022, among chronic hepatitis B carriers aged at least 18 years who were followed for at least six months, treated or not. Results: The study included 135 patients, with an average age of 41.62 ± 10.69 years and a male predominance (64.44%). The average infection duration was 8.11 years ± 6, and the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire - Hepatitis B Virus (CLDQ-HBV) global quality of life score was 5.95 ± 0.90. Respondents’ overall quality of life was linked with gender, history of depression, and history of fatigue (ORa = 0.42 (p = 0.009), ORa = 1.57 (p Conclusion: Our study enabled us to assess mean quality of life scores according to the CLDQ-HBV dimensions, and to identify factors associated with the quality of life of chronic HBV carrier patients. AIM: To examine the association between interferon(IFN) therapy and loss of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag) in inactive HBs Ag carriers. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study in inactive HBs Ag carriers, who were treatment-naive, with a serum HBs Ag level < 100 IU/m L and an undetectable hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA level(< 100 IU/m L). All the 20 treated patients received subcutaneous PEG-IFN alfa-2a 180 μg/wk for 72 wk and were then followed for 24 wk. There were 40 untreated controls matched with 96 wk of observation. Serum HBs Ag, HBV DNA, and alanine aminotransferases were monitored every 3 mo in the treatment group and every 3-6 mo in the control group. RESULTS: Thirteen(65.0%) of 20 treated patients achieved HBs Ag loss, 12 of whom achieved HBs Ag seroconversion. Mean HBs Ag level in treated patients decreased to 6.69 ± 13.04 IU/m L after 24 wk of treatment from a baseline level of 26.22 ± 33.00 IU/m L. Serum HBV DNA level remained undetectable(< 100 IU/m L) in all treated patients during the study. HBs Ag level of the control group decreased from 25.72 ± 25.58 IU/m L at baseline to 17.11 ± 21.62 IU/m L at week 96(P = 0.108). In the control group, no patient experienced HBs Ag loss/seroconversion, and two(5.0%) developed HBV reactivation.CONCLUSION: IFN treatment results in HBs Ag loss and seroconversion in a considerable proportion of inactive HBs Ag carriers with low HBs Ag concentrations. 展开更多

In the present study, nanostructured lipi... Artemisinin(ART) is a widely used active drug for malaria, including severe and cerebral malaria. However, its therapeutic efficacy is affected by its lower bioavailability. In the present study, nanostructured lipid carriers(NLCs) were proposed as carrier of ART to improve pharmacokinetic properties of the drug. ART-NLC was prepared by high-pressure homogenization based on orthogonal design. The particle size, zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency(EE) and percentage of drug loading(DL) of ART-NLC were(53.06±2.11) nm,(–28.7±3.59) m V, 73.9%±0.5% and 11.23%±0.37%, respectively. ART-NLC showed the sustained release characteristics and scarcely the hemolysis effect on human red blood cells. The pharmacokinetics of ART-NLC for rats after tail intravenous injection(i.v) or intraperitoneal injection(i.p) were investigated by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy(LC-MS/MS). And ART solution was designed as control preparation. For rats of i.v groups, the AUC0–∞((707.45±145.65) ng·h/m L) of ART-NLC were significantly bigger than that of ART((368.98±139.58) ng·h/m L). The MRT((3.38±0.46) h) of ART-NLC was longer than that of ART((1.39±0.61) h). And similar results were observed for rats of i.p groups. The AUC0–∞((1233.06±235.57) ng·h/m L) and MRT((4.97±0.69) h) of ART-NLC were both bigger than those of ART, which were(871.17±234.03) ng·h/m L) and(1.75±0.31) h), respectively. Compared with ART, ART-NLC showed a significant increase in AUC0–∞(P〈0.05) and MRT(P〈0.001) for both i.p and tail i.v administrations. 展开更多
