Global climate change has become a major concern worldwide. The spatio-temporal characteristics of net ecosystem productivity(NEP), which represents carbon sequestration capacity and directly describes the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of carbon sources/sinks(C sources/sinks), are crucial for increasing C sinks and reducing C sources. In this study, field sampling data, remote sensing data, and ground meteorological observation data were used to estimate the net primary productivity(NPP) in the Inner Mongolia grassland ecosystem(IMGE) from 2001 to 2012 using a light use efficiency model. The spatio-temporal distribution of the NEP in the IMGE was then determined by estimating the NPP and soil respiration from 2001 to 2012. This research also investigated the response of the NPP and NEP to the main climatic variables at the spatial and temporal scales from 2001 to 2012. The results showed that most of the grassland area in Inner Mongolia has functioned as a C sink since 2001 and that the annual carbon sequestration rate amounts to 0.046 Pg C/a. The total net C sink of the IMGE over the 12-year research period reached 0.557 Pg C. The carbon sink area accounted for 60.28% of the total grassland area and the sequestered 0.692 Pg C, whereas the C source area accounted for 39.72% of the total grassland area and released 0.135 Pg C. The NPP and NEP of the IMGE were more significantly correlated with precipitation than with temperature, showing great potential for C sequestration. 展开更多

The results showed that the wetland changed from carbon sink to carbon source, which led to the increase of CO_2 emissions in the atmosphere and the intensification of greenhouse effect, which made the earth face the threat of global warming. We conducted a field campaign to investigate the chemical composition,sources,and light absorption of submicron aerosols(PM_(1))from early 2022 in Nanjing,China.The average concentration of PM_(1) was 31μg m^(−3),organics(33%)constituted the largest fraction,followed by nitrate(30%),sulfate(18%),ammonium(15%),chloride(3%),and rBC(2%).Four organic aerosol(OA)subcomponents were identified,including two primary OA(POA)and two secondary OA(SOA).The less-oxidized SOA(LO-OOA)contributes the most to the total OA mass(59%).LO-OOA is tightly correlated with the tracer ion C_(2)H_(4)O_(2)^(+)from levoglucosan,and another aged biomass-burning derived species,K_(3)SO_(4)^(+),suggesting it was likely influenced by aged biomass-burning OA.Our study also revealed that fireworks during the Spring Festival have a detrimental impact on air quality,contributing to secondary formation and accumulation under static winter meteorological conditions,prolonging the pollution duration.Also,LO-OOA was found to have the strongest light-absorbing ability.Our results highlight that the light absorption of LO-OOA can mainly be attributed to the C_(x)H_(y)N^(+) family,increased with the double-bond equivalent value.The more-oxidized SOA(MO-OOA)exhibited a negligible light absorption and was strongly correlated with daytime photochemical processes,implying a light-bleaching effect.This study enhances our understanding of the regional contribution of biomass combustion and fireworks to PM_(1) pollution in Nanjing,a typical megacity in the Yangtze River Delta region,during winter,aiding in the development of strategies for long-term air quality improvement in the region. 展开更多

Nitrogen removal from domestic sewage is usually limited by insufficient carbon source and electron donor.An economical solid carbon source was developed by composition of polyvinyl alcohol,sodium alginate,and corncob,which was utilized as external carbon source in the anaerobic anoxic oxic(AAO)-biofilter for the treatment of low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio domestic sewage,and the nitrogen removal was remarkably improved from 63.2%to 96.5%.Furthermore,the effluent chemical oxygen demand maintained at 35 mg/L or even lower,and the total nitrogenwas reduced to less than 2mg/L.Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the microbial communities responsible for potential denitrification and organic matter degradation in both AAO and the biofilter reactors were mainly composed of Proteobacteria and Bacteroides,respectively.The solid carbon source addition resulted in relatively high abundance of functional enzymes responsible for NO_(3)^(−)-N to NO_(2)^(−)-N con-version in both AAO and the biofilter reactors,thus enabled stable reaction.The carbon source addition during glycolysis primarily led to the increase of genes associated with the metabolic conversion of fructose 1.6P2 to glycerol-3P The reactor maintained high abun-dance of genes related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle,and then guaranteed efficient carbon metabolism.The results indicate that the composite carbon source is feasible for denitri-fication enhancement of AAO-biofilter,which contribute to the theoretical foundation for practical nitrogen removal application. 展开更多

The arsenic(As)release from sediments in great lakes is affected by various factors.In this study,the characteristics of As release fromsediments was investigated,and the As sources and sinks with the strengths in sediments from different areas(grass-type,algae-type,and grass-algae alternation areas)in great shallow lakes(Taihu Lake,China)were analyzed,and the influence of P competition in the process of As release was also studied.The results showed that changing trend of the values of equilibrium As concentration in sediments were consistent with the regional changes(0 to 28.12μg/L),and the sediments from algaetype areas had the higher values.The sediments from western lake and northwest lake bay were a strong As and a weak P source,and the north lake bay had the opposite trend of these two regions.Intense P source competition with As from the sediments occurred in algae-type areas.The grass-type areas had strong As and P retention capacities,indicating a sink role of sediment with high As and P sorption capacities.The degree of As and P saturation had similar trend in sediments,and the grass-type areas had the higher values,18.3%-21.4%and 15.31%-20.34%,respectively.Contribution analysis results showed that most of As release contribution was from the bottom(30-50 cm)sediments,and the surface(0-10 cm)sediments from algae-type areas contributed more to the overlying water than other region. 展开更多

Wetlands play an important role in the global carbon cycle, but there are still considerable uncertainties in the estimation of wetland carbon storage and a dispute on whether wetlands are carbon sources or carbon sinks. Xiaoxing’anling are one of several concentrated distribution areas of forested wetland in China, but the carbon storage and carbon sink/source of forested wetlands in this area is unclear. We measured the ecosystem carbon storage (vegetation and soil), annual net carbon sequestration of vegetation and annual carbon emissions of soil heterotrophic respiration of five typical forested wetland types (alder swamp, white birch swamp, larch swamp, larch fen, and larch bog) distributed along a moisture gradient in this area in order to reveal the spatial variations of their carbon storage and quantitatively evaluate their position as carbon sink or source according to the net carbon balance of the ecosystems. The results show that the larch fen had high carbon storage (448.8 t ha^(−1)) (6.8% higher than the larch bog and 10.5–30.1% significantly higher than other three wetlands (P < 0.05), the white birch swamp and larch bog were medium carbon storage ecosystems (406.3 and 420.1 t ha^(−1)) (12.4–21.8% significantly higher than the other two types (P < 0.0 5), while the alder swamp and larch swamp were low in carbon storage (345.0 and 361.5 t ha^(−1), respectively). The carbon pools of the five wetlands were dominated by their soil carbon pools (88.5–94.5%), and the vegetation carbon pool was secondary (5.5–11.5%). At the same time, their ecosystem net carbon balances were positive (0.1–0.6 t ha^(−1) a^(−1)) because the annual net carbon sequestration of vegetation (4.0–4.5 t ha^(−1) a^(−1)) were higher than the annual carbon emissions of soil heterotrophic respiration (CO_(2) and CH_(4)) (3.8–4.4 t ha^(−1) a^(−1)) in four wetlands, (the alder swamp being the exception), so all four were carbon sinks while only the alder swamp was a source of carbon emissions (− 2.1 t ha^(−1) a^(−1)) due to a degraded tree layer. Our results demonstrate that these forested wetlands were generally carbon sinks in the Xiaoxing’anling, and there was obvious spatial variation in carbon storage of ecosystems along the moisture gradient. 展开更多

Stable carbon isotope compositions of individual light hydrocarbons in oils: New indicator of source facies and maturity

Light hydrocarbons(LHs)are key components of petroleum,and the carbon isotopes composition(δ^(13)C)of individual LHs contains a wealth of geochemical information.Forty-four oil samples from five different basins were analyzed using gas chromatography(GC),gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC–MS),and gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry(GC-IRMS).Theδ^(13)C values of forty-three LHs were recognized and determined by comparing the GC and GC-IRMS methods.The results revealed significant differences inδ^(13)C distribution characteristics among different LH compounds.Theδ^(13)C variation of individual LHs in iso-paraffins showed the widest range,followed by cycloalkanes and aromatics,whereas theδ^(13)C variation in n-paraffins showed the narrowest range.Theδ^(13)C values of most individual LHs are primarily affected by the source facies and thermal evolution.Among them,c-1,3-dimethylcyclohexane(c-1,3DMCH)is mainly sourced from higher plants but may also form through abiotic mechanisms such as catalysis or cyclization.Theδ^(13)C values of c-1,3DMCH(δ^(13)Cc-1,3DMCH)primarily exhibit parental genetic characteristics,enabling effective distinction of oil from different source facies.Specifically,theδ^(13)Cc-1,3DMCH in marine oils,lacustrine oils,terrigenous oils,and coal-formed oils are<–22‰,from–22‰to−20.2‰,from−20.2‰to−18.4‰,and>−18.4‰,respectively.Moreover,maturity is the primary controlling factor forδ^(13)C values of 3MC7(δ^(13)C3MC7,3MC7:3-methylheptane),while the source facies serve as a secondary influence.The plot ofδ^(13)Cc-1,3DMCH andδ^(13)C3MC7 was introduced to classify source facies.Asδ^(13)Cc-1,3DMCH andδ^(13)C3MC7 increase,the source facies transits from marine to lacustrine,then terrigenous,and finally coal facies.Additionally,increasingδ^(13)C3MC7 indicates a relative increase in maturity.Therefore,theδ^(13)Cc-1,3DMCH vs.δ^(13)C3MC7 plot serves as an effective tool for distinguishing source facies and assessing relative maturity. 展开更多

In this study,different types of small molecular carbon sources such as melamine,dicyandiamine,pyrocatechol,and o-phenylenediamine were used to regulate the surface structures of iron/nitrogen/carbonbased composites(Fe-N/C),which were used to activate peroxymonosulfate(PMS).The relationship between different small molecular carbon sources and the electronic structure was investigated.The characteristics of metal-carrier interaction in the Fe-N/C were clarified.As a result,there were significant differences in the degradation efficiency of catalysts prepared with different small molecular carbon sources,which was related to the types of active sites.Density functional theory(DFT)and experiments results showed that the catalyst rich in C-O-C and FeN_(x)exhibited better catalytic activity,which may be attributed to the higher adsorption energy for PMS.The main active species for catalytic degradation of ofloxacin were identified as sulfate radical(SO_(4)^(·-))and hydroxyl radical(^(·)OH)by electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)spectra.The introduction of different small molecular carbon sources can significantly affect the distribution and electronic structure of active sites on the catalyst surface,thereby regulating the generation and migration of radicals. 展开更多

Mangrove forests are critical ecosystems for carbon sequestration,effectively capturing atmospheric carbon and permanently storing soil organic carbon(SOC)in coastal wetlands.Recent restoration and afforestation initiatives have been undertaken to mitigate the rising atmospheric CO_(2) concentrations along tropical ocean coasts worldwide.The expansion of mangrove forests has garnered significant attention for elucidating their contributions to the permanent storage of carbon in both surface and subsoil layers.In this study,we investigated a recently expanding mangrove forest in the Beilun River Estuary of Guangxi Province,focusing on the abundance and sources of organic carbon(OC)in surface sediments.We also analyzed sediment grain size distribution,SOC,total nitrogen(TN)content,and stable carbon isotope composition(δ^(13)C).Additionally,we determined the molar ratio of SOC to nitrogen(C/N).The SOC content ranged from 0.25%to 6.58%,the C/N ratio varied from 9.85 to 17.73,δ^(13)C values spanned from-29.58‰to-24.93‰,andδ^(15)N values ranged from 3.10‰to 7.36‰.A strong correlation was observed between SOC and TN content.However,particle size did not significantly influence these relationships.In terms of SOC sources in the sediments,contributions from mangrove,terrestrial,and marine sources accounted for 37.1%to 99.5%,0.5%to 47.4%,and 0%to 17.6%,respectively.The findings of this study provide essential insights for evaluating and managing carbon sinks within the mangrove ecosystems of the Beibu Gulf region,contributing to more effective carbon management strategies in coastal areas. 展开更多

This study investigated the hydrocarbon source rock potential of the Late Cretaceous Mamu and Nkporo formations in the Asaga-Ohafia Axis,Afikpo Basin,southeastern Nigeria,using integrated facies analysis,organic geochemical and palynofacies data.Five lithofacies were identified:dark grey shale,oolitic limestone,heterolithic mudstone/sandstone,laminated bioturbated sandstone,and calcareous mudstone,indicating estuarine,deltaic,and shallow marine depositional environments.Total organic carbon(TOC) contents range from 1.47 to 2.40 wt%,which reflects moderate to good organic richness.For the Mamu Formation,kerogen composition is dominated by Type Ⅱ/Ⅲ,composed of 30 %-50 %amorphous organic matter(AOM),5 %-10 % liptinite,30 %-50 % vitrinite,and 10 %-20 % inertinite.Spore coloration and Thermal Alteration Index(TAI:3-3+) suggest thermal maturity within the oil window(Ro:0.80 %-1.50 %).In contrast,the Nkporo Formation shows comparable kerogen composition(20 %-45 % AOM,0-20 % liptinite,and 40 %-65 % vitrinite) but lower maturity(TAI:2-2+;Ro:0.45 %-0.80 %).Rock-Eval pyrolysis further supports these findings.The Mamu Formation displays higher Hydrogen Index,favorable Tmax,and Production Index values,confirming its maturity and oil and gas-prone potential.Palynological assemblages,including marine dinoflagellate cysts(Mamu Formation) and freshwater algae/fungal spores(Nkporo Formation),align with the inferred depositional settings.Thus,the Mamu Formation is the more prolific source rock,characterized by superior organic quality and thermal maturity. 展开更多

Black carbon (BC) aerosols are considered key factors that contribute to rapid climate warming and ice melt in the Arctic region.However,compared with long-term observations from land-based stations,observational data over the Arctic Ocean remain relatively scarce.Four Arctic scientific expeditions were conducted in the summer and early autumn of 2010,2012,2016,and 2018 via the Chinese research vessel Xue Long,during which the BC concentrations along the routes were measured via light absorption methods.In this work,the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of BC over the Arctic Ocean were examined on the basis of these observations.The potential sources of BC along the various routes were analyzed via the weighted potential source contribution function and weighted concentrationweighted trajectory methods of the hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model in conjunction with Arctic transport potential climate model simulations.The analysis results indicated that wildfires in the western Aleutian Islands,Siberia,and Far East regions were the primary contributors to the BC aerosol concentration observed along the Arctic expedition routes in summer,identifying these regions as major potential source areas. 展开更多

Black carbon(BC)aerosol can lead to adverse health effects and drive climate change;therefore,the characteristic research and identification of BC sources are essential for lowering emissions.In this study,equivalent black carbon(eBC)measurement was performed using a seven-wavelength Aethalometer(AE33)at an urban site in a typical industrial city(Zibo)of Northern China for the first time.The monitoring was performed from February 2021 to January 2022.The mass absorption cross-section(MAC)of AE33 was optimised using the online elemental carbon(EC)data,and eBC was corrected using the MAC.The corrected annual BC concentration was 1.72±1.18μg/m^(3).The diurnal variation of BC depicted a bimodal distribution.Furthermore,the BC concentration on weekends was 18%lower than on weekdays.The diurnal variation and weekend effect reflect the critical contributions of traffic emission to BC concentration.The source apportionment of BC was calculated by a constraining Aethalometer model,which restricted theÅngstrom exponent using the online potassium ions.The results revealed that BC was not significantly affected by biomass burning(BC_(bb))in Zibo.The relative contribution of BC_(bb)was higher in winter than in other seasons.The daily morning peak of BC was primarily influenced by traffic sources,whereas the contribution of biomass burning increased after 17:00 in the evening peak.Our findings suggest that it is more important to control fossil fuel sources for BC emission reduction in Zibo,while it is necessary to strengthen the control of biomass combustion sources in winter. 展开更多

A Novel Method to Identify the Global Sources and Sinks of Carbon Dioxide Based on Spatial Analysis

The redundancy of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is known as a major factor in this phenomenon. These gases contain water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. The CO2?gas is one of their most effective among these gases. According to scientific warnings, the amount of CO2?gases in the atmosphere has increased by 40% to 45% over the last 50 years. Reducing the abundant gas in the atmosphere requires a good knowledge of related factors involved, including sources that emit gases into the atmosphere and sinks that absorb the gas from the atmosphere. The amount of CO2?gas in the atmosphere has been accurately measured in previous years with great certainty. But the predicted values of emissions from sources and removals by sinks have large ambiguities. As studies show, even the computed residuals trends (which is obtained by subtracting the amounts of sinks from sources) strongly disagree with the trends of the existence of CO2?in the atmosphere. This study as a preliminary review, proposes a method to identify the locations of sources and sinks of carbon dioxide using global statistical information and adding spatial analysis approaches. By applying this method to the data observed from 2000 to 2011 and the extraction of likely sources and sinks, the region of the Black Sea, near Romania recognized as one of the strong points issued and Bukit Kototabang near Indonesia acknowledged as an Impressive CO2?absorption zone. 展开更多

The results indicate that total number of bacterium, microbial metabolism activity, and diversity index in P7, P8, P1 and P2 kept higher, fol owed by P3, P4, P5 and P6. The utilization rate of microbes on sugars achieved the highest (31.0%-48.7%), fol owed by carboxylic acid (13.4%-18.0%), amino acid (10.1%-20.5%), polymers (9.4%-17.0%), biopolymer (5.7%-9.7%) and phenol (4.95%-7.50%). Principal component analysis divided microflora in different ponds, suggesting that microbial community has varied carbon source characteristics and nitrogen-containing compound and biopolymer metabolisms are most affected. 展开更多

[Objective]In order to increase anther culture efficiency of pepper.[Method]MS culture media and Bolajiaohong were used in this experiment to study the influences of carbon sources and concentrations on anther callus induction of pepper.Jiayu was taken as a material to study influences of plant growth regulators and concentrations on anther callus induction of pepper according to L16(4^5) orthogonal design.[Result]The average callus and embryoid induction rates of maltose at all concentrations were higher than these of sucrose but the difference was not significant.Taking maltose or sucrose as a carbon source,3% to 6% concentration was good for increasing induction frequencies of calli and embryoids.However,If the concentration was over 6%,the induction rates were declined dramatically with the increase of sugar concentration.The influences of growth regulators on induction rate of calli were listed as 2,4-D﹥ZT﹥NAA﹥KT﹥6-BA;the influences on induction rates of embryoids were listed as 2,4-D﹥NAA﹥ZT﹥KT﹥6-BA.The 2,4-D,ZT,NAA and KT had signficant or extremely significant influences on induction rates of calli and embryoids.2,4-D,ZT at 1.0 mg/L and NNA,KT at 0.5 mg/L had the best effects.The influences of ZT on calli and embryoids were better than those of KT and 6-BA.1.0 mg/L 2,4-D +1.0 mg/L ZT +0.5 mg/L KT +0.5 mg/L 6-BA was the best regulator combination for induction culture of Jiayu anther.[Conclusion]The experiment provided research basis for anther culture of pepper. 展开更多

The flocculating activity of a novel bioflocculant MMF1 produced by multiple-microorganism consortia MM1 was investigated. MM1 was composed of strain BAFRT4 identified as Staphylococcus sp. and strain CYGS1 identified as Pseudomonas sp. The flocculating activity of MMF1 isolated from the screening medium was 82.9%, which is remarkably higher than that of the bioflocculant produced by either of the strains under the same condition. Brewery wastewater was also used as the carbon source for MM1, and the cost-effective production medium for MM1 mainly comprised 1.0 L brewery water (chemical oxygen demand (COD) 5000 mg/L), 0.5 g/L urea, 0.5 g/L yeast extract, and 0.2 g/L (NH4)2SO4. The optimal conditions for the production of MMF1 was inoculum size 2%, initial pH 6.0, cultivating temperature 30℃, and shaking speed 160 r/min, under which the flocculating activity of the MMF1 reached 96.8%. Fifteen grams of purified bioflocculant could be recovered from 1.0 L of fermentation broth. MMF1 was identified as a macromolecular substance containing both protein and polysaccharide. It showed good flocculating performance in treating indigotin printing and dyeing wastewater, and the maximal removal efficiencies of COD and chroma were 79.2% and 86.5%, respectively. 展开更多

Mariculture has rapidly grown worldwide, which might greatly influence the biogeochemical cycle of organic carbon in coastal seas. In this study, several geochemical parameters, including grain size composition, sedimentary total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic compositions, were analyzed for surface sediments collected from different mariculture zones of Sanggou Bay and in different seasons. We investigated the composition and distribution of or- ganic matter in surface sediments and further evaluated the contribution of mariculture activities to TOC sources. The TOC and TN contents (mass percentage) in the bay were in the range of 0.14% to 1.45% and 0.03% to 0.20%, respectively. The spatial distribution indicated that sedimentary TOC and TN contents in shellfish monoculture and shellfish-kelp polyculture zones were higher than in other mariculture zones, which might be related to grain size composition and mariculture organisms. Seasonal variations of TOC contents were observed in different mariculture zones. The TOC/TN atomic ratio (C/N),δ13C and δ15N were in the ranges of 5.97 to 10.97, 21.76‰ to 13.14‰ and 2.13‰ to 8.08‰, respectively, implying that sedimentary organic matter in Sanggou Bay was the mixture of marine phytoplankton, terrestrial and maricultural sources. A simple mixing model based on δ13C was applied and the results indicated that the relative contributions of organic carbon sources in Sanggou Bay followed the order kelp (36.6%) marine phytoplankton (28.7%) shellfish bio-deposition (23.8%) terrestrial input (10.9%). Surface sediments in Sanggou Bay were domi- nated by mariculture-derived organic carbon, which on average accounted for 60.4% of TOC. 展开更多

Based on the 1961-1995 atmospheric apparent heat source/sink and the 1961-1990 snow-cover days and depth over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (QXP) and the 1961-1995 reanalysis data of NCEP/NCAR and the 1975-1994 OLR data, this paper discusses the interannual variability of the heat regime and its relation to atmospheric circulation It is shown that the interannual variability is pronounced, with maximal variability in spring and autumn, and the variability is heterogeneous horizontally. In the years with the weak (or strong) winter cold source, the deep trough over East Asia is to the east (or west) of its normal, which corresponds to strong (or weak) winter monsoon in East Asia. In the years with the strong (or weak) sum mer heat source, there exists an anomalous cyclone (or anticyclone) in the middle and lower troposphere over the QXP and ifs neighborhood and anomalous southwest (or northeast) winds over the Yangtze River valley of China, corresponding to strong (or weak) summer monsoon in East Asia. The summer heat source of the QXP is related to the intensity and position of the South Asia high. The QXP snow cover condition of April has a close relation to the heating intensity of summer. There is a remarkable negative correlation between the summer heat source of the QXP and the convection over the southeastern QXP, the Bay of Bengal, the Indo-China Peninsula, the southeastern Asia, the southwest part of China and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and in the area from the Yellow Sea of China to the Sea of Japan. 展开更多
