Although generative conversational artificial intelligence(AI)can answer questions well and hold conversations as a person,the semantic ambiguity inherent in text-based communication poses challenges to effective use....Although generative conversational artificial intelligence(AI)can answer questions well and hold conversations as a person,the semantic ambiguity inherent in text-based communication poses challenges to effective use.Effective use reflects the users’utilization of generative conversational AI to achieve their goals,which has not been previously studied.Drawing on the media naturalness theory,we examined how generative conversational AI’s content and style naturalness affect effective use.A two-wave survey was conducted to collect data from 565 users of generative conversational AI.Two techniques were used in this study.Initially,partial least squares structural equation modeling(PLS-SEM)was applied to determine the variables that significantly affected the mechanisms(i.e.,cognitive effort and communication ambiguity)and effective use.Secondly,an artificial neural network model was used to evaluate the relative importance of the significant predictors of mechanisms and effective use identified from the PLS-SEM analysis.The results revealed that the naturalness of content and style differed in their effects on cognitive effort and communication ambiguity.Additionally,cognitive effort and communication ambiguity negatively affected effective use.This study advances the literature on effective use by uncovering the psychological mechanisms underlying effective use and their antecedents.In addition,this study offers insights into the design of generative conversational AI.展开更多

Objectives:Inpatient falls are a major patient safety issue in acute care hospitals.Multifactorial inhospital fall prevention programs have shown reductions in falls and related risks.One common element of successful ...Objectives:Inpatient falls are a major patient safety issue in acute care hospitals.Multifactorial inhospital fall prevention programs have shown reductions in falls and related risks.One common element of successful programs is active patient involvement.This study objective was to explore patients’and nurses’experiences with a structured intervention to foster patient involvement.Methods:This study was conducted between September 2020 and April 2021 in a university hospital neurological ward.The studied intervention consisted of a falls information leaflet,and a structured nurse-patient conversation about fall risk-reduction activities.Nurses were trained to deliver the intervention and supported throughout the study.Nurses’and patients’experiences regarding personal involvement,satisfaction,and confidence were surveyed and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.Results:Fifty-six patients recruited by ward nurses received the intervention.After receiving the intervention,patients reported high levels of satisfaction with the in-hospital fall prevention conversation.Twenty-one nurses indicated that they would use the leaflet and communication aid.Twenty-one nurses commented on intervention facilitators and barriers.More specific facilitators included their shared perception that“handing out the leaflet to patients was not problematic”and that the leaflet was seen as“applicable in many patient situations.”Their comments indicated two particularly prominent barriers to conducting the intervention in clinical practice:1)“finding the time for the implementation in the daily clinical routine and workload”and 2)“environmental factors like a noisy and busy atmosphere on the ward.”Conclusions:This study provides insights into a patient involvement intervention featuring a structured nurse-patient discussion about fall risks.The accompanying information leaflet and communication guide require adaptations to facilitate sustainable implementation into the hospital’s fall prevention program,but proved useful.展开更多

The data for this study were collected from two EFL classes at the same Chinese high school, each taught by a different teacher. The length and context of pauses naturally occurring in the whole lessons were analyzed in terms of reading lessons in EFL classrooms. Findings were as follows. Appropriately prolonged pauses combined with teachers' explicit interventions can enhance the quality and quantity of students' answers and promote their involvement, maximizing their learning opportunity. This paper aims to explore how a veteran teacher organizes online teaching initiated by the pandemic and how she deals with the problems in online teacher-student verbal interaction.By analyzing a corpus of 20 audio-r...This paper aims to explore how a veteran teacher organizes online teaching initiated by the pandemic and how she deals with the problems in online teacher-student verbal interaction.By analyzing a corpus of 20 audio-recorded online lessons between a math teacher and her students during the COVID-19 pandemic from April 11 to May 10,2022,four interactional segments are selected as the focus of the study.The results of the conversation analysis of the segments showed that students’modesty,lack of confidence,lack of ability,and network delay are the main factors affecting online teacher-student interaction.By encouraging students to answer questions,enlightening students to give answers,enriching students’answers,and entertaining the teaching atmosphere(“4Es”strategies),the teacher solved the problems successfully.The findings from this study can provide pedagogical experience and implications for practical teaching.展开更多

文摘This paper aims to explore how a veteran teacher organizes online teaching initiated by the pandemic and how she deals with the problems in online teacher-student verbal interaction.By analyzing a corpus of 20 audio-recorded online lessons between a math teacher and her students during the COVID-19 pandemic from April 11 to May 10,2022,four interactional segments are selected as the focus of the study.The results of the conversation analysis of the segments showed that students’modesty,lack of confidence,lack of ability,and network delay are the main factors affecting online teacher-student interaction.By encouraging students to answer questions,enlightening students to give answers,enriching students’answers,and entertaining the teaching atmosphere(“4Es”strategies),the teacher solved the problems successfully.The findings from this study can provide pedagogical experience and implications for practical teaching.
文摘Implicature is a universal feature of human communication.In conversations,it is common to see examples of something unsaid but communicated.After introducing the theory of conversational impilcature and its four maxims,this paper presents English and Chinese examples to compare their conversational implicature,and finds conversational implicature exists in both Chinese and English conversation.

文摘What are the articulative semiotic characteristics of the Instagram interface, and how do they contribute to the construction of documentary, conversational photographic discourses with social purposes？ This is a semiotic analysis of the Instagram interface as an interactive and conversational platform in creating new photographic documentary strategies for social purposes, to which we have applied the model of textual conversation as outlined by Bettetini （1984） and the concept of multidimensional interactivity proposed by Sally McMillan （2006）. We shall analyse the work of Pachi Tamer （@cachafaz） in Instagram,and in particular the ＂Jim-Oktoberfest＂ case, the One-Dollar-Dreams site and the same author＇s ＂Sebasti^in＂ case from a semiotic perspective.
文摘This article reflects on the process of transcribing spoken interaction and makes a comparative analysis of two different varieties of spoken interaction(casual conver- sation and institutional talk). By doing so, it reveals how the different purposes of speech result in their distinctive characteristics, and shows how language is struc- tured to construct ideational meanings(Field) and interpersonal meanings(Tenor) that define each context.
文摘Based on the theory of conversation, turn,and turn-taking, this paper selects three non-English major college English teachers' English lessons as the research subjects. Through classroom observation, recording, video and transcript, and by using Microsoft Excel2007 to collect and analyze data, this paper focuses on the teachers' conversational fillers in transitional relevance point. This study will contribute significantly to teachers' taking measures to reduce the impacts of negative transfer of mother tongue on natural and fluent communication and improve the quality of communicative language teaching.
